Mangala – An Authentic Man

By Sarath de Alwis

The origin of sincerity is courage. Listening to the voice of one’s conscience takes courage. Men with moral courage are not hesitant to teach others what they have learnt. Mangala Samaraweera will be remembered for his moral courage.

It takes lot of courage to be an authentic person in public life. Only a person hungry for truth will discover truth. It is only from such authentic men that people will learn the truth. Whether the people will want to learn the truth is another matter.

Mangala lived a life of dignity. His dignity compelled him to speak out. As some sage said dignity is never silent. Truth and courage are foundational to dignity. A person with dignity will always do what others fear to do, the dignified human speaks out.

Mangala Samaraweera was the quintessential romantic. The romantic conceives the idea of a perfect world and spends the rest of his life adjusting his imperfections to fit in to that dream of a perfect world. It is no easy journey.

Romanticism fails to read the limitations of the perfect world and the complexities of the real world.

Mangala Samaraweera never abandoned the hope that the real world could somehow be persuaded to the path of a more perfect world. Such men are remembered in history. A very decent human being has taken the ferry to the great beyond.

All of us, as we march through life quietly but surely grow into some personality. The long march through life equips us to frame our thoughts, develop our feelings, values and what we perceive as solutions to problems that we confront.

Mangala Samaraweera was such a man who saw what was wrong with our nation. We are nation adrift. We are a people who have lost our moral compass.

I did not agree with his economics. But I salute his deep humanism. He will be missed by all decent people who yearn for a land where civic trust is embedded, and public reason is respected.
He never gave up. Only a few weeks ago he set up his new instrument to contribute to the public discourse. He called it the Radical Center. In her novel ‘To kill a mocking bird “Harper Lee use a curious definition of moral courage that adequately describes Mangala Samaraweera’s moral courage.

“Real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.”

Mangala Samaraweera did not observe moral neutrality. He knew that to remain silent was to cohabit with the oppressor.

His integrity was reflected in his capacity to recognize the unvarnished truth. His honestly was in his ready capacity to tell the unvarnished truth to other people.
In 1784, the German philosopher Immanuel Kant wrote an essay where he answered the question what enlightenment is.

‘Enlightenment is man’s release form his self-incurred immaturity and his inability to make use of his understanding without direction from another. Immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of reason but in lack of resolution and courage. Kant implored ‘Have courage to use your own reason.”

Mangala Samaraweera had the courage to use his own reason.

Mangala Samaraweera was a rare Sinhala-Buddhist politician who courageously upheld minority rights. He understood that Sri Lanka could never rise up to be a successful nation unless there was social peace for which ensuring minority rights was a sine qua non.

He was a colourful politician who will be missed.

Mangala was victim of the identity politics he promoted and cared so passionately about.
He was played by the US Deepstate and Samantha Power and as Finance Minister and Foreign Minister, lacking the qualifications for the jobs, he essentially did what he was instructed to do by his foreign patrons.

Still his was a life well lived and he faught for what he knew and believed in. RIP Mangala.

As usual, Mr. Alwis has set it out perfectly. “Only a person hungry for truth will discover truth. It is only from such authentic men that people will learn the truth. Whether the people will want to learn the truth is another matter.”
Quite true. In this country, people vote for liars. We don’t want to hear the truth. We have 2500 years of history after all.

Thank you Sarath de Alwis for this quick Farewell to Mangala Samaraweera!
It was by instinct, I suppose, I started reading Sharmini Serasinghe’s article virtually as a farewell or obituary to Mangala Samaraweera. It was few minutes ago (7.30pm Sydney time or 2.30pm Sri Lanka time, 24 August). I talked about him with my wife. Then a typed his name on Google. Alas! This morning he has unfortunately passed away. Ada Derana had reported it around 11.45am and EconomyNext at 12.24pm.
    Farewell to Mangala!
I first came to know him somewhere in mid-1990 during his Sudhu Nelum (White Lotus) Movement. His departure undoubtedly is a lost to the country. RIP.

True, Mangala tried to be authentic and true to himself and liberal values, but was a puppet in the hands of the US Deepstate, just like his political ally and buddy RW and the others in the Gay and Happy network of US puppets political club of Lanka.
That is why Easter Sunday attacks happened when they were in power. Using Identity politics, LGBTQ, gender etc is part of the strategy of divide, distract and rule of the crashed morally and intellectually and financially bankrupt empire that was Mangy’s beacon!
Mangy sad to say was not able to see this. Mangala RIP.

By 2020 he ran out of votes and could not be elected.

Mangala’s death is a massive blow to minorities.

    RIP Mangala.

Good bye Sir. You are a very decent human too good for Sri Lanka. There are so many whom the covid could have taken and don’t know why. You never scared to tell the truth. An extremely rare commodity among Sinhala politicians. In one good you died because SL has no hope for good people

Let’s not forget Mangala was a primary architect and instrumental in bringing Mahinda to power in 2005. And complicit in bribing the LTTE to stop the vote of the Tamils.

When these people become old and are out of politics …….. after grabbing everything politics has to offer that their unremarkable talents would have not given them in any field other than politics …….. and starts mumbling nice comforting sounding platitudes …….. should we get fooled?

What matters is not what a man utters when he has nothing to lose ………. but how he acts/acted when he had something to lose!

I know a former head of a public research institution who never took the official car home: parked it in the office and drove his own car home. Never took a single official trip overseas; gave it to juniors who would have benefited from the exposure to the outside world. Paid his own money for overseas trips.

But Mangala we all know …… for what? ……. For uttering a few comforting platitudes?

What sacrifices has he made? Yeah ….what bloody sacrifices has he made?

People shouldn’t lull themselves into rose tinted romanticism …… should learn to be more critical ……….

There are lovable/likable crooks ………. and there are unlikable crooks ……… in the end all are crooks who have played their crooked games …………

I prefer unlikable crooks: what you see is what you get …… that’s why I hangout with Native and SJ ……….

There was never a better Sinhala politician than Mangala Samaraweera whose passing away would have brought more grief to Tamils.

I fully agree that he was a good man. But he was also a politician.

I was fired from Peradeniya where I had exposed much of the corruption in our universities. When I had difficulties with the Tigers upon my appointment as VC/Jaffna, the Peradeniya authorities fired me saying I was on leave to be VC but I was not serving.

In Aug, 2015, Ranil, Sirisena and Mangala issued independent statements saying all those victimized should return and would be accommodated. Sirisena promised a red-carpet welcome. I took them seriously and returned in Aug. 2015. No one helped me with the court case filed against me by Douglas. I was on my own till the Magistrate refused time for the police to investigate that which they had been investigating from 2011. He threw out the charges.

As for my reinstatement in the university system, both Ranil and Sirisena were stringing me along, not lifting a finger. Sirisena did not give me an appointment.

When I went to Mangala with the news clipping where he invited us back he was polite but curt. Said he, “I am sorry. I cannot help you.”

It was certainly better than being strung along.

A big loss for our country. We badly need voices like his to lead this country, and to implement policies that benefit ALL, not just the majority. He did not support racist nor discriminatory policies, and tried to be the voice of sanity at these times of madness. RIP Mangala.

    May Mangala rest in peace.
He took both injections, as per some news. Science still has to go a long way to save humanity from this Hitleristic disease. Still the consolation. or the best out of the worst is, his body was carried by a mortuary van, not by white van. Mangala had proved that he was not an easy target like Suriyachari. It is considered as statesmanship if the political opponents accept their enemy’s achievements. It is the height of the political hypocrisy of the Royals, who targeted Mangala, regretting his death.

The loss for Ceylon by his departure, that is the fact he cannot be one out of the 4,000 the Aanduwa sacrificed to prove its arrogance, cannot be easily recognized by them (specially for Sinhalese,) in the current chaotic situation. They will not be able to go on a protest parade against the Health Ministry, whose irresponsibility which killed Managala. Like they dealt Tamils’ problem with a military solution, they dealt covid-19 to with the same weapon. While the powerful countries who tried multi prong solutions failed and licked their wounds, the Hitler Aanduwa fooled Modayas as they are the 2nd best nation in Covid-19 control. Sinhala Intellectuals like Jehan PhD praised military on Covid-19 achievement to collect support for militarizing the country. Honest Buddhists may beg Buddha that he make this as the last punishment on them.

Only now I learned Mangala has died of COVID.

I was unaware of his death when I wrote my comment …… such a comment is inappropriate at this time.

    I apologize.

Nimal, no need to apologize. Every politician for that matter every human at their end will be remembered by their good and bad deeds. No one is perfect at the end of the day including me. In Lanka all we had was crooked, corrupted , selfish politicians and around them Mangala, appears as Mandela. But definitely he is one among very few who genuinely addressed minority issues.

        Chiv, MV, OC,

I did not have the time to read Sharmini’s or Sarath’s articles before I wrote my comments …….. I thought their articles were in support of Mangala’s new political movement he was in the process of putting together.

I didn’t know he had COVID and was gravely ill.

I’m very sad about his demise …… he was one of the very few SL politicians who had exposure to the West/outside-world and was changed by it – as opposed to people like GL and some others whose Lankan minds have remained unchanged/unaltered – and understood the lager “global context.”

He never played the race-card and never played racial-games for political expediency ……. and had the courage to speak up. Yes, in contrast to almost all other Lankan pols he stood up for things he believed in.

I admire him for speaking up against schoolchildren falling down at crooked pols feet. ……… no one should fall down at anyone’s feet …… especially at the feet of a Lankan pol !

I have no personal knowledge of either you or Mangala; on the other hand I know your brother-in-law, Indral, reasonably well, and I’m familiar with your sister’s cultured voice on the phone.
    .
Thanks for writing this tribute to one of the few politicians we have had whom we could respect as a sincere and decent human being. When I first saw this other article by Sharmini Serasinghe, I was confident that the COVID would be overcome, but when I heard of his passing, I felled impelled to say something about this man who was one of the few politicians I was able to respect..

Politics is the art of the possible, but it is also necessary that there should be principles attached to its practice. Mangala was always honest and straightforward. He may have meant what he had said to Sharmini about not contesting the Presidency, but his passing is tragic because he was still young enough to contribute.
    .
Let us hope indeed that he is one of the persons who will be remembered in the history of our land and our times, because, as you say, he was one of our few public figures who was able to be true to himself. If he is remembered it will be proof that some decencies have survived this mess we have made of our land.

Certainly, I agree with you on the part of “Authenticity”. He was an authentic SOCIOPATH, in other words his actions, and words confirms that he was suffering from antisocial personality disorder. Otherwise, there were no reasons for him to patronize “Buddha-Bar” in New York city with his similar minded friends, whenever he was in New York City, or admonish the children in an open forum not to pay homage to teachers and elders of our society, or else he would not have had courage to declare Sri Lanka is not a Buddhist country publicly. Above all his impulsive behavior and the most horrible comment about the Triple Gem confirms he was an authentic SOCIOPATH who antagonize, manipulate, or treat others especially Buddhist monks with callous indifference. But as a Buddhist, I like to say, “May he attain Nibbana ending his samsara journey one day”.

what is wrong in that?Sri lanka is a bhuddhist majority country, not a bhuddhist country, just as india is a hindu majority county, not a hindu country and US is a christian majority country, not a christian country.Of course the saudis and the pakistan are muslim countries ,because they won’t let any other religions live there without putting immense pressure on them to convert to islam and as a result they are not having a worthwile diversity in religions.
do you want sri lanka to be lumped with saudi and pakistan,or with india and US?
mangala only said by “sri lanka is not a bhuddhist country” that sri lanka is a tolerant society.Nobody here puts any pressure on anybody to become bhuddhist.
i don’t know what he said about the triple gem that makes you bob up and down lik you are suffering from piles, but i only know that the triple gem is 1.Lord bhuddha 2.the Dhamma(his teachings)3. the sangha(monks who practice bhuddhism).

In fact, his death occurred in 2005.
Somebody used him as a ladder to get up and kick him out. His death process began that day some fifteen years ago.
There are a number of people like Sripati Sooriarachchi, hunted in the same manner, but Mangala had to suffer more than 15 years to die, while others died on the spot!
May he reach the greatest bliss now!

I have a serious suspicion about Mangala’s death.
According to international health sector news, the possibility of fully inoculated people being hospitalized and dying is VERY RARE. Even if fully vaccinated people are infected with the virus, their situation won’t be serious.
The Rajapaksas were well known for unleashing terror to oppress their opponents in the past.
Is Covid “the new terror” which comes and goes according to the Rajapaksas’ whims and fancies?
In fact, I wanted to post a comment weeks ago, first, when Samitha Hamuduruwo passed away, then, when Rukmale Loku Hamudurwo passed away and then, when Sunil Perera was hospitalized. Hope Sunil will survive or will he also suffer a cardiac arrest?
    .
SDIG Ajith Rohana has also been infected with Covid-19 and admitted to a private hospital. A private hospital? Noooo. He is said to be in a stable condition, ’until he also suffers a cardiac arrest?’ My advice is to take him home and treat him according to Sinhala indigenous medicine.
    .
A few months ago, when I expressed my opinion elsewhere on the controversy involving Seruwila Temple, I warned that there was a sinister plot to assassinate prominent Buddhist monks.

Please be aware everyone. Something abnormal is happening.

Now it is 100% sure that Mangala’s death is not due to Covid-19. It is a murder.
This is what my fellow commenter Chiv says:-
      .
      chiv / August 24, 2021
What I find confusing is according to news Mangala was treated in a private hospital where he was unresponsive for the past two days. When they tried to put him on the vent he passed away.
      .
How could that be??? Ranil says he spoke to Mangala the day before.
I urge the CID to INVESTIGATE into Mangala’s questionable death.
When I first heard that Mangala was admitted to hospital, I had this suspicion. I wish I had shared my thoughts then.
In my previous comment, I forgot to mention the suspicious death of Kili Maharaja. The Rajapaksas were angry with Sirasa for revealing the presence of Chinese military at the Tissa Wewa. They even officially threatened to ban Sirasa. Then in less than two weeks, we heard of the death of Kili Maharaja, the owner of Sirasa! Now, there is no talk of banning Sirasa.
      .
Also, this is what a doctor in Badulla Provincial Hospital said yesterday.

thank you so much for your link and the info provided by your comment. I do believe, Rajapakshes would murder anyone. I am sinhalaya, but I dont want to call me as sinhalaya becuase like MANGALA, I would love to be identified as a srilanken. I do support buddhists, but not ” sinhala buddhists”:
Yes there is currently a huge shortage of medicine in the country even if that B****putha Fake Prof. Channa Balusumana seems to be not listening to the people s demands. Those who ridiculed out at GOOD GOVERNANCE has fallen to all deep today, not being able to settle even tiny issues.
        :
We criticised Dr Rajitha Senaratne, but he did a great job during his tenure regarding all various kinds of medical drugs , devices and all other treatments. At least today, these men in power should rely on him and other experts, if they cant do the job properly.
        :
There are rumours that OXIMETERS of fake nature are in the market and mislead any customers because the information produced by such fake gadgets cause innocient people to get entered the hospitals and COVID wards. Some of them may not are really infected, but after entering the COVID wards, they become infected.
        :
Almost everything is in chaos in today situation. They returned to power through blatant lies, and DEWA SHAPAYA (God s curse) have worked on entire nation today.

There is a factual inaccuracy in Champas post:

In the desert a twig of grass is greenery. This country cannot produce anything wholesome. Only thing I can say is that Mangala was perhaps a better man than many of his fellow beings from the South, an area of corruption, abuse, nepotism , violence and Voodoo.

We can keep referring to ideas and quotes from places far away. Many bilingual Sri Lankans do that quite fashionably.

I’m sorry to hear of Mangala’s untimely demise. As the author and several other commentators have stated his Authenticity and commitment to deeply held principles is unusual among SL politicians. They are characteristics that could’ve been of immense value in any future SL renaissance.

Same as the Author I too did not think much of his Economics; which appeared to be too Top-down rather than Bottom-up. However, my bigger concern was his fraught Relationship with his own faith, Buddhism.

I remember very well his misguided position of “Deruvansaranai”; i.e. I will follow and worship Buddha and Dhamma only. I was very surprised by this statement for a few reasons.

    1. Every Religious faith requires messengers for its sustenance and propagation, Sangha fulfil this vital role for Buddhism.
    2. The Sangha are held in reverence by those of Buddhist faith in SL, and the Sangha in-turn have raised their voices to influence Policy-implementation is crisis situations.
    3. Clerical-orders, the world-over, have had their issues with the inability of some, within it’s fold, to follow its Behavioural-requirements, It is surprising that Mangala did not think this through before he uttered his bizarre “Deruvansaranai”.
    4. The Sangha-order could have benefitted from the input of “Free thinking Buddhists” such as Mangala to improve itself, so long it was offered via appropriate channels and with respect.

      Rohan25,
      .
His last words were ” I would prefer me to be called not sinhala buddhist, but as srilanken buddhist”.
      .
However, MaRa et al reaped the harvest on the public statements made by Mangala and Ranjan because both had no fears to call a spade a spade. Remember, how Ranjan revealed it at the time, several SANGAYAS were caught by AIDs and also as child molesters. Srilanken main stream media did not give a publicity because they dont care about the side of PUBLIC but their pay masters.
