Mangala Samaraweera MP was appointed today as Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister.

This is the third time Minister Samaraweera will hold the portfolio, having held it for the first time between November 2005 and January 2007, and for the second time between January 2015 and August 2015.
After the ceremony, Minister Samaraweera said that he would “build, with even greater vigour, on the tremendous goodwill the international community extended to Sri Lanka after the January 8 revolution”, adding that, “this intensification of engagement and strengthening of relations will be made possible by the political stability arising from the decisive mandate given by the people in the general election”.
He said that he would “place economic diplomacy at the centre of Sri Lanka’s foreign affairs – focusing on promoting trade, tourism and investment”. Minister Samaraweera also noted that “restructuring the Foreign Ministry and the rationalization of Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions abroad was an urgent priority”.
Two other MPs were also sworn in as ministers of the new government. Wijedasa Rajapakshe as Justice Minister and D.M. Swaminathan as Resettlement Minister.

It broke my heart when on a visit there three years ago to a ‘modern’ shopping plaza, the best they had on display was a selection of staplers and hole-punchers – fresh in from China. Security is paramount and there is zero tolerance of anyone stepping out of line. On my several visits, I have to say that I have never ever felt threatened or uneasy, including after one long hot and magical evening at the local Casa de la Musica, after which my wife and I walked back to our hotel at 3am without any bother.
As for Dayan, we must not intrude on his grief but await news of his sighting, probably clutching to a sheaf of old sodden straws. Dr D will never accept that the peasantry he fought for is no more. True the poor are still with us; they may be in the gutter but these days they are looking at the stars, and dreaming of the day they will share in the goodness that will surely come their way.
Dr D will not be sharing anything in Havana these days; heck, they may even declare him unwelcome as a ‘possible destabilising influence’. How times change.

1st Class fare and 5 star Hotels should be for the President and PM only – because of the positions they hold. Ministers should travel Economy-Business Class and MPs Economy only. Hotel choices should be along similar lines.
The people threw out Mahinda and his ping adi gang for living it up on the depleting resources of the ailing country. Ranil-Sirisena regime should set the guide-lines here. Otherwise, there will be hundreds of “Sajin Vas’s” doing the grand at the poor tax payers account. I agree the Sinhala voter is literate – meaning he can read and write Sinhala. But “educated” – certainly not. The cunning political leaders know this. Which is why they rob the country and live it up so long as they are in power while subtly keep increasing price of Petrol/Gas (even while the world market is down) Sugar, Milk Powder, Wheat Flour/Bread, Electricity all of which are daily mass-consumed items.
