Many Facets Of Madam Blavatsky: A Mystic? A Spy Or A Fraud?

By Punsara Amarasinghe

Dr. Punsara Amarasinghe

Madam Blavatsky’s name is not strange for Sri Lankans as one of the early stalwarts to aspire to the Buddhist resurgence in the late 19th century. In the backdrop of British-sponsored Missionary activities, her audacity to stand with the natives in a British colony illustrates her compassion for the Easterners who suffered under foreign subjugation. After the tragic end of the 1883 Kotahena riots, Blavatsky defended the Buddhists, when the colonial government tried to frame them to be the culprits. In an article she authored for “The Theosophist“, Blavatsky argued that the arrogant attitude of the Christian priests and their condescending remarks over Buddhism sparked the riots in 1883 and the following year she accompanied Col. Henry Olcott to London to report the grievances faced by the Sinhalese Buddhists to the Colonial Secretary.

Blavatsky with some members of the Theosophical Movement

Yet underneath the interest, and respect she upheld towards Buddhism, Blavatsky’s persona remained uncanny. Although she observed Pancil on her arrival in Galle, she never adopted Buddhism as her creed. The riddle of Helena Petrova Blavatsky has been inexplicable for historians, scholars and even her biographers. Born to a noble family in the Russian empire in 1831, Blavatsky had a flair for occultism and alchemy since childhood as she devoted herself to reading books related to mystical traditions in her grand uncle’s library. In an era when travelling alone was taboo for women, Blavatsky showed a penchant for travelling to the Far East. Blavatsky’s maiden experience with Eastern mysticism emerged when she went to Astrakan, a Central Asian province of the Russian Empire. Inhabitants of Astrakan were the practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism and in her travel journals, Blavatsky often claimed to have visited Tibet.

World tour

Before coming to Ceylon in the late nineteenth century, Blavatsky travelled extensively around many parts of the world including some distant places in the Middle East as well. In Cairo, she became acquainted with the Coptic Christian priests and Sufis. In Europe, she stood in solidarity with the Garibaldi, when Italian forces marched against Papal Rome. Her hobnobbing with freemasons, Christian mystics, Sufis and the Jewish Cabbala tradition culminated in her connections with some mystical characters called “ Mahatmas”. Notwithstanding her various claims in different accounts, it remains a mystery about the way how she contacted these characters as her claims often related to paranormal experiences beyond any empirical evidence.

Birth of Theosophy

Madame H.P. Blavatsky was the direct agent of the Mahatmas. She was sent by them to establish a Society with the specific purpose of creating a core group for the Universal Brotherhood of humanity. This Society also aimed to promote the comparative study of world religions and philosophies, as well as to investigate unexplained laws of nature, psychic and spiritual faculties, and latent powers in mankind. Initially, Blavatsky spoke of the Mahatmas in private, but over time, the mysterious figures known as Koot Hoomi and Moorya established connections with other individuals such as Alan Hume, the founder of the Indian National Congress, and Col. Henry Steel Olcott. Another mysterious messenger for Blavatsky and her followers was St. Germain, an 18th-century European nobleman known as an alchemist.

Founding the Theosophical Society in 1875 was the paragon of her contribution to the mystical movements in a time, in which occultism continued to foster as a post-enlightenment reality. Blavatsky’s blended version of occultism was an idiosyncratic appeal filled with pantheistic beliefs and was a stark contrast to conventional Christianity. Blavatsky was hostile to Christianity as an organised religion, in effect, her harsh criticism always focused on the clergy and the institutions of Christianity. Theosophy intended to be her answer to institutional Christianity based on the array of occultist and mystical traditions she mastered during the wandering years.  Absorbing the doctrines from all the major religions encompassing ancient Tibetan Tantra and Vedanta, Blavatsky depicted Theosophy as a human quest to know the eternal truth, which is aptly illustrated by its famous slogan “ There is no higher religion than the truth “.  The symbol of Theosophy itself was akin to a wider representation of ancient wisdom and it attracted many Indian nationalists in the late 19th century.

A British Spy or a Russian Spy?

Blavatsky was the first Russian woman to become a naturalised citizen of the USA, but this transformation did not save her from getting subjected to the West’s suspicion due to her Russian nationality. In India, British bureaucrats monitored her activities closely suspecting that she would exploit the internal vulnerabilities to favour Russian interests. British fear of Blavatsky resonated with their paranoia about a possible Russian invasion of India, which was romanticized by authors as the “ Great Game”. Her travel history to the Far East and the Middle East naturally aroused British suspicions about Blavatsky’d loyalties, which became more critical of her involvement in the Indian national movement with characters like Anne Bessant.  Contrary to the popular claim of labelling Blavatsky as a Russian spy, one of her biographers suggests that Blavatsky may have spied for both Russians and the British. In particular, some historians have pointed out that Blavatsky’s stay in India among the Indian nationalists intended to debilitate the Hindu-led nationalist movement in India.

Unlike the occultism presented before her, the discourse that Blavatsky propagated contained no direct theistic interpretation of the divine. In her masterpiece “Isis Unveiled,” she criticizes the Christian notion of a personal god by arguing that the name “Satan” has been misused in Christian theology. In this text, Blavatsky straightforwardly writes that Lucifer brought mankind spiritual wisdom and intellectual freedom. Like the Romantics, she draws a parallel between Satan and Prometheus. In her second important work, “The Secret Doctrine,” Blavatsky points out the Jewish Kabalistic interpretation of Satan as an antagonist force, which is necessary to the vitality, development, and vigor of the principle of good. Professor Per Faxneld from Stockholm University speculates that Blavatsky’s sympathy for the term “Satan” was an effort that Blavatsky made to espouse a counterculture against 19th-century Christian dogma. Even though she was not a proclaimed Satanist, her thoughts influenced 20th-century occultists like Aleister Crowley in perceiving evil.

Declared a charlatan

Besides all these given merits, Blavatsky’s credibility reached the nadir when the Society for Psychical Research in Cambridge declared her a fraud. However, this exposure could not completely ebb her impacts on 20th-century spiritualism as many scholars tend to portray Blavatsky as a mentor for many to seek ancient wisdom. The Theosophical movement founded by her along with Olcott became a cosmopolitan movement that acquired adherents around the world, where it flourished independently and had a life beyond society.

Her interest in Ceylon extended beyond Buddhism, and some argue that Blavatsky saw Lanka as a remnant of a lost civilization known as “Lemuria.” Despite the nearly 600 biographies written about Madam Helena Petrova Blavatsky, none of the biographers have uncovered the secrets of Blavatsky or the motivations behind her establishment of Theosophy. Was she gifted with spiritual abilities to communicate with Mahatmas? These questions remain unanswered and await further exploration.

    Hello Dr. Punsara Amarasinghe

“ There is no higher religion than the truth “ to which she was a complete stranger. Madame Blavatsky was a complete and utter fraud. And her dupe Henry Steel Olcott was just as bad.
“Was she gifted with spiritual abilities to communicate with Mahatmas? These questions remain unanswered and await further exploration.” No these questions do not remain unanswered. No-one communicates with Mahatmas unless they are living. Her motive – money, power and egotism.

Can you sing, dance, or does what a ventriloquist or a contortionist does? Can you write poetry or a series of novels like J. K. Rowlings? Can you become a billionnaire like Bill Gates or Elon Musk? Can you become the prime minister of the UK like Starmer? Finally can you hear dog-whistles? Can you fly like a pelican? Can you live under sea, like a fish? Can you reproduce by binary fission? Can you breath in Carbon dioxide and convert it to energy or food? Can you photosynthesize your food inside your own body – using sun light and various other chemical reactions? Can you OR can you not?

I guess you and your partner can do all that in mystic ways. Done with mystic Lanka, mystic SB and now to mystic psychology / hypothesis / theories/ placebo effects.

No. I didn’t say I can do any of that. Can you actually read and understand anything, before commenting? I bet if at all you are a GP, and it was some non-specific GP training that you under went in the US. I regret to say you don’t seem to neither behave similar to, nor posses the intellect of, a medical specialist.

Being a physician is a privilege, not entitlement. Didn’t you, say “fake license”. At least try being consistent. What is there to read and understand in your comments ?? Yes, I’m not similar to other medical specialist in that , I do NOT put up or allow people ( including patients ) to abuse or walk all over me. I may not posses the intellect of a medical specialist, but sure , have sense to keep away from scums , who try taking advantage. By the way, still waiting for your answer on Antidepressants.

    Dr. Punsara Amarasinghe,
    .
Interesting piece. I’m intrigued by the interest you display on the matters addressed in it, as to where they stem from? I see that your profile picture is taken in Russia, isn’t it? A place where mysticism exist even today. Not so long ago I encountered a Russian individual’s online who claimed that he possessed various mystical abilities like interacting with certain beings from other worlds if I can correctly remember his characterisation of them. Unfortunately I’ve forgotten his name. Forgetfulness has been a major issue for me since of late. Both this Russian individual and his wife who too had similar capabilities were assassinated on different occassions within the span of few years, the husband for political aspirations that he seemed to have developed, having realised that he belonged to a family of Russian either Royalty or aristocracy from a by gone era. It was I think on his website stated that his assassination probably is the work of Putin and his strongmen due to possible political threats that they may face from him. His wife I believe was French and alleged to have been murdered while in France. A reason for which he never disclosed as far as I can remember.

There’s another Russian lady now in the US, a Psychiatrist by profession who has touched upon the subject of mysticism within her professional domain. Olga Kartiditi I believe is her name, who has authored several books, including Entering the Circle, which you may find interesting.
      .
Another contemporary American Psychologist author who touches upon the subject is James Redfield. Several novels of his, including The Secret of Shambala touches upon the subject through a fictional frame work. His book “God and the Evolving Universe”, provides evidence for existence of mystical experiences out of which at least one I have personally experienced prior to reading the book. In fact I was quite taken aback when my experience was explained in the book word to word as an experience people who meet so called soul mates have.

Having said that Buddhist literature is full of mysticism and mystical experiences. In fact certain mental personalities or charcters could be encountered through meditative practices, Buddhist or otherwise. They could impart you knowledge that you would otherwise have no access to. They include the ability in determining what’s inside other people’s minds.
        .
Mental phenomenology like hallucinations both auditory and visual even though according to medical sciences, currently categorised and classified as pathological, I believe are part and parcel of such mystical experiences, whenever they are not a result of underlying organic pathology.
        .
It looks like these mystical experiences are encountered by persons with higher cognitive capacities. Whether this is an early sign of the next level of speciation of Homo sapiens is a concern and a topic I am seriously addressing.

This type of practices are common in some African cultures. I learned that from my Ghanaian and Sudanese college friends. “18 sanniyas” or similar healing practices are common in various countries in Africa.

Completely agree. That’s why Szaz said modern psychiatry is BS. What do you think about people predicting their own death? My cousin had some weird dream about waves and water a few days before the tsunami in 2004. She didn’t get caught to it, however it was uncanny, as she lived in another country at the time.

              What’s your point?
              .
There are all sorts of people that mock anything and everything. His lack of intellectual capacity to understand what’s communicated in the Redfield’s novel is a bigger worry than male pattern baldness.
              .
For example this is one of his intepretations of the message that book is trying to communucate: “…its that you don’t need goals or even a plot, because if you just do nothing the coincidences will take care of everything for you. That’s the message of this book, right? Just kick back, relax, and let the spiritual insights come to you.”
              .
This is totally wrong. Your goals are central to the coincidences you experience. In fact they are the driving force of the coincidences.
              .
Let’s say you step out of the house to go to the market, a friend of yours drive by an offers to give you a lift, who too is going to the market. You had a goal – going to the market. Coincidence – a friend with a car comes along and gives you a lift who is also going to the market.
              .
You can actually develop the ability to identify these coincidences in your life.
              .
They align you with your goals. For example if you start doing something along with your goals you will see these coincidences that facilitate you reaching that goal.

The guy also makes a desparate attempts to link coincidences with Yoga and Communism. It hasn’t got anything to do with them. I can assure you that much.

“Blavatsky’s blended version of occultism was an idiosyncratic appeal filled with pantheistic beliefs and was a stark contrast to conventional Christianity.”

Actually Christianity itself contains many pagan rituals and beliefs. For example, the “virgin birth”, the “Trinity”, “rising from the dead”, and drinking wine (which symbolizes blood). The “Bible” that you see today omits a lot of information as per the efforts of the Catholic Church to suppress “unfriendly” material, such as the Gnostic writings.

“This Society also aimed to promote the comparative study of world religions and philosophies, as well as to investigate unexplained laws of nature, psychic and spiritual faculties, and latent powers in mankind.”

Right, science cannot explain everything. Paranormal experiences are possible. Check out the work of J.B. Rhine, who conducted experiments on ESP and psychokinesis at Duke University in the mid-20th century. Some of Rhine’s early experiments seemed to show statistically significant results.

One should not confuse paranormal experiences with the idiosyncrasies of organized religion. You can be an atheist and still have a paranormal experience.

    • 6
      2

Lester, to be an atheist and still have paranormal experience definitely has to be from God’s enemy, the devil. In your experience, it definitely has to be the devil deceiving you, against the true doctrines and experiences of Christianity itself detailed in the bible as the virgin birth, Trinity, resurrection of Jesus from the dead with ascension and glorification and the total lack of the Holy Communion experience given by Jesus at the Last Supper before his death. Your veiled myth is that there is no Christianity. Gen.12,3 and 17,10 eternal covenant carries a curse, and you need warning not to receive it. Leave alone what is not your belief.

        davidthegood,

AI datacenter capacity demand is expected to exceed 10 GW by early 2025. The big technology companies are investing tens (if not hundreds) of billions in AI infrastructure, such as chips and data centers. Do you remember the Tower of Babel story? Eventually all this AI investment will culminate in something called “Artificial Super Intelligence” (ASI). It will utilize the power of quantum computing (10 billion times faster than your computer now) to correctly answer every question in physics, maths, chemistry, etc. ASI will be so intelligent and productive that most “jobs” as we know them today simply won’t exist. It will be a big problem for world governments, similar to the COVID-19 time. A lot of restless people at home with nothing to do. Economically, the world will be much better off. At the same time, people will need some kind of mental discipline to come to terms with their existence. This is the likely future of the world, unless Islamic terrorists use a nuclear weapon.

Apart from that there are no functional Quantum Computers yet and it is possible that it may be a long time before they can perform as well as today’s Supercomputers. Some even question if they will ever live up to expectations.
So the Idealistic Socialist World with no Workers that you believe in is a long way off.

“AI datacenter capacity demand is expected to exceed 10 GW by early 2025. “
AI data centers have thousands of computers, hard disks, etc. All these get very hot, and need lots of water for cooling. This is where ancient Sri Lankans come in, with their expertise in 300 psi water pumps.
Their time travel expertise could be handy too. Just move the computers to a cooler time….
“people will need some kind of mental discipline”
Yes, enough discipline at least , when they lose arguments, not to bring others’ wives into it.

Lester, all this exalting of AI data center and ASI super intelligence is trying to prove that the devil, who only can copy and duplicate God, can also ably originate and produce what God did not do for earth. Not to be carried away by super-duper false promises. The aliens devil able to bring in with human DNA mixed origins will not be saved as God did not create them. They can be made to murder and do evil and may even attack you.

AI and supercomputing will create superhumans. Maybe one day they’ll comment on CT, but I’ll be dead by then. I know very little about biology, but this seems like the next iteration of evolution. Countries like S. Korea and Japan will have the answer to their declining birthrates. Now the interesting question, can we use AI to alter people’s personalities as well. The next few decades will be very interesting.

        LS,
All religions are bound up with mysticism: among them only Buddhism, as taught by the Buddha (be cautious, not to mix it up with being practised in srilanka through fake monks aka Pinguththarayas), is mostly near intelligible with science.
When I entered Europe 3.5 decades ago, I thought I should read about other religions rather than being stuck with Sinhala_Buddhism. Islamic fundamentalists and Christian extremists did not differ in their behavior when they tried to argue about God’s creation of humans.
        .
What later became clear to me was that every religion was created to find people to fulfill their own purposes in life. Today, the Chinese people, with a large population of 1300 million people, use material goals more than religious beliefs.
Even if we keep company with our loved ones and friends, we cannot read their hearing and vision abilities 100%. However, we assume that we understand our mother, father, sister, brother, teacher and everyone else to the best of our own cognitive abilities. So, we can’t judge other people’s abilities to be wrong. However, mysticism should well be related to a person’s cognitive abilities. No matter how much research one does, no one will be able to find out fully the innate ability of another. There are even experimentalists stuck somewhere. That’s what I feel.

LS, This is just an example. Synesthesia is when you “hear music , but you see shapes / colors.” It’s a fancy name for one experiencing one of their senses through other. Its linked to higher IQ and memory. Previously understood , to be a perceptual phenomenon passed through genetics, but newer research shows this experienced can be gained by training. (see wikipedia , there is extensive article on this ). Now, the same Synesthesia can be created by potent Psychedelics / Hallucinogens like LSD, Psilocybin, Psilocin ( magic mushrooms ) where users describe ” THEY HEAR COLORS, AND SEE MUSIC “. See www. vice.com for a first hand account from someone with Synesthesia, on psychedelics. You will be surprised to read many of the myth discussed here are mentioned by the first time user. ( a basic pharmacology book of ours has all details ). Other drugs which can cause Synaethesia are mescaline, ketamine, amyl nitrate, MDMA . . . . One more thing there are physiological hallucination like hypnopompic and hypnagogic occur in relation to sleep – wake cycle ( few of us may have experienced ).

LS, not sure whether you had a chance to go through the link. Here are some excerpts from Synesthesia triggered by psychedelics – first hand account( things frequently told by our myth experts here ) 1) I’ve seen things people wouldn’t believe, Roy Batty in the film “Blade Runner”2) As a sci-fi obsessed 10 year old from a small village, wanted to search an unconventional topic for his science assignment 3) hence conventional volcano, renewable energy, space shuttle were out of question 4) Then someone suggested “PSYCHIC PHENOMENA” 5) One particular book in his school library, had all he wanted clairvoyance, telepathy, telekinesis, entire chapter on craft-spoon bender Uri , who no longer claims to have supernatural powers, but what grabbed the 10 year old was less controversial but well documented outliers polynesian fire walkers, , Indian Gurus who are able to forgo food and water for extended periods, notorious vagabond mystic and trusted confidante of last Tsar, of Russia, who could stop bleeding of hemophiliac Tsar Alexi ( probably by hypnosis ) and synesthesia. That’s when he realized he had always experience this phenomena, which he now considered as super/paranormal power. Fast forward a little over a decade, now an adult trips on LSD for the first time, just before attending a Frank Zappa concert ith friends. What happened after is hilarious, but worth reading, “so called paranormal / mystical power” triggered by psychedelic.

              Hello Chiv
As a teenager I read Huxley’s “Doors of Perception” on just such experiences. At around the same time I read his other books like “Island” and “Brave New World”. Not long after this the film 2001 (Arthur C Clarke) was released with a fair amount of “Psychedelic” scenes towards the end. Later on I read the brilliant “The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat” and a very strange book on South American exploration and Psychedelic Drugs “One River” by Wade Davis.
I even went to one of R D Laing’s Lectures at Aberdeen University. He was one of the first to advocate “Care in the Community” for the treatment of Mental Illness. We also read books on “Altered States of Consciousness”, Chariots of the Gods, T Lobsang Rampa and other mystical stuff. However most of us came to the same conclusion, that interesting as they all were, they represented a distorted reflection of the real world (and unreal) inside people’s minds. Some of the writers were engaged in deliberate lying. One of my School friends wrote and published a book on her brother’s fight with Cancer and how “Reiki Treatment” helped him. It didn’t.

                Hello Chiv,
I read the piece about Synesthesia. Some very funny escapades, reminiscent for those of us who were teenagers in the 60s and 70s. Some of my friends recalled similar experiences.
Sleep and dreaming have always fascinated me. Sometimes I have been trying to solve very difficult problems and had difficulty sleeping. Eventually in the early hours I have dropped off and dreamed that I have solved the problem. Later on I have tried out my dreamt solution only to find out I was wrong. However on rare occasions lo and behold it worked. These type of events and the role of sleep and dreaming definitely require further investigation.

LS, During my PG, I worked in sleep labs, monitoring parameters such as EEG, vitals, muscle tone / surface EMG , perfusion, pulse oximetry, ………………….. overnight, interpreting relevant data and reporting (usually takes a week). Sleep is unique in that, the brain is switched on and off, almost like being anaesthetised on a daily basis, where , except for vital functions ( heart, respiratory ), the rest are put to rest. My analogy, is that of , florescent lamp, usually when switched comes to live, but on occasions keeps flickering before coming to full. Brain activity too can occasionally play tricks, when switched on and off. Sleep architecture is explained as different stages of sleep, 3 and 4 / REM being deep sleep. Thanks to technology. I just got my sleep study done, with help of a simple device connected to smart phone, all I have to do is stick it on me and sleep a few hours. My friend, a pulmonologist, in the U.S received data overnight and reported the very next day. Freud’s ” dream analysis and interpretation, is worth the read.

                      Hello Ruchira,
Anecdotes are not evidence in the strict or legal sense.
“Anecdotal Evidence usually is not subject to rules of legal, historical, academic, or intellectual rigor, meaning that there are little or no safeguards against fabrication or inaccuracy. This does not mean that all anecdotal evidence is false, it just means that the methodology of scholarly method or the scientific method, or legal requirements of testimony have not been required of the evidence” – Wikipedia.

It’s interesting how these ideas based on sleep and how it works depend on the individual, the hormone melatonin and serotonin (5-HTP, serotonin and melatonin are products of the same tryptophan metabolic pathway) that controls the sleep cycle heavily varies from person to person, depending on the burden of their stressful day.
LS@ I also had a few of similar dreams that gave a positive result of being overworked the previous day, although the reality was the opposite. It depends on your own assessment of your positive contact with the problem you have to solve. in fact, Our subconscious mind stores our beliefs and values, determines our memories and observes information around us, decides what to send to the conscious mind and what to store for later. Even if I live physically away from my mother, after her demise, I was the only person in the big family dreamed of her continously. Even today, I dream of her often, and my dream remain so beautiful until I wake up suddenly. Nothing but it is the subconsciousness guides me to fall me such dreams.
Srilanken witchery doctors seem to be playing with individuals that fight with their imbalance between normal mind and subconscious mind taking it as their occupation to help out. So called healers are the real threat in srilanka today.

          Ruchira,

Even something like the placebo effect cannot be fully explained by science. Obviously the immune system plays some role, but that’s like saying I can isolate your thoughts in the form of electrical current. Just because I have the current doesn’t mean I can recreate your thoughts.

          • 7
            7

Lester – “…placebo effect cannot be fully explained by science”. True. There have been instances where drugs, particularly antidepressants that had earlier proven to be effective by clinical trials, lost their efficacy over time for rreasons that elude doctors. There have been various hypotheses as to why, but unfortunately such marginal interests never get adequately funded.

            • 7
              9

Placebo effect can be explained by any medical student. In individuals who use alcohol frequently, the efficacy is lost over time, called TOLERANCE leading to dependence ( physical and psychological ) and withdrawal symptoms. It’s not that alcohol per se has lost it’s efficacy over time. ( still works good on moderate drinkers ) Alcohol increases the activity of GABA ( neurotransmitter ) receptors. In same manner, most Psychiatric medicines work by regulating different neurotransmitters / receptors. Hence in certain patients , it may appear that the medicine has lost some of it’s efficacy. Prozac / Fluoxetine, approved in 1987 is
still worldwide used ( one of the few approved in children ). For that matter, even anti hypertensive or Diabetic medicine can lose potency in few individuals.

                Hello Chiv,
There was a backlash against many Psychiatric Medicines in the 70s and 80s such as anti-psychotics etc. Mainly because they were being used to control difficult prisoners and patients (liquid cosh). However I experienced a very novel use of one here in Sri Lanka. I suffered food poisoning by Blue Cheese due to the power cuts (fridge off for long periods) and developed severe hiccups and breathing difficulties. The Doctors in Peradeniya tried Omeprazole to no affect. One of the Doctors phoned a friend who advised the use of a half tablet of Largactil (an anti-psychotic). 20 minutes after ingestion I fell asleep – no hiccups.

            Dear Readers,

Our so called Pandits are only jokers. Lester is obvioulsy one of them.
Sri Lankans are in big mess today because of their own big mistakes.
Most of them are the reality of our homeland. They simply don’t care about facts. …. ? they make the mistakes in repetition. Shameless genetics may be the main cause.
            What is Science?

A system of knowledge about the physical, chemical and biological universe and the things found in it is called science. It is an objective observation that explains the basic laws of nature. Another approach to defining science is information gained through practice.

What is the Placebo Effect in Simple Words?
The placebo effect is when a person’s physical or mental health seems to improve after taking a placebo or “dummy” treatment. Placebo is Latin for “I will please” and refers to a treatment that looks real but is not intended to have any therapeutic benefit.

What we know is far less than what we don’t know. What people have discovered is far less than they should have. Although we assume that the intrinsic factors of every person are comparable, the truth is that every body is unique. Even identical twins differ from each other in some aspects.

      Hello Lester,
According to the Eucharist, drinking of the Holy Wine is to actually (not symbolically) drink the blood of Jesus as is eating the wafer, actually the body of Christ.
“In the celebration of the Eucharist, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit and the instrumentality of the priest”.

Now what could be more Pagan than that? Maybe the Celtic practices of Tree and Well Worship (or is that Buddhist?), however they all have the same roots in our forgotten Human dim and distant past.

old codger, I am not responsible for what all kinds of churches do, but one who has experienced Jesus, will never be satisfied simply looking at his image. The real experience is at Pentecost, receiving the Holy Spirit experience inside, and secondly in the Eucharist, receiving the transubstantiation of the DNA of God in order to be transformed back into his image he made us in. Those who lack, will continue to argue till death overtakes them.

          Hello Lester,
So who was the “Atheist”? I asked “Give me an documented example of an Atheist that has had a “Paranormal Experience”.
As for your link (humorous intent?) you must have searched a lot of anti-gay sites to find this. There are parts of Glasgow that even you Lester, with your weapons training, would be advised to steer clear of. This is the home of Jimmy Boyle, Frank “Tarzan” Wilson and other notorious criminals. Much was written about the history of their area in the book “No Mean City”. Glasgow then was like “Peaky Blinders” on Amphetamines. Boyle wrote “A Sense of Freedom” whilst in Prison.
Back in the 70s I lived in Hillhead, near Partick and Maryhill and knew of the reputations of these people and even met some that were acquainted with them. Here is a link written by Duncan Campbell ( who I met once)

            Hello LankaScot,

Paranormal experiences are not exclusive to atheists. It seems you had a paranormal experience (leading to a conversion) at some point as well, otherwise you would be more forthcoming in condemning child marriage. However, since you insist on a list of atheists with documented paranormal experiences, here it is: (1) Michael Shermer (2) Carl Sagan (3) Philip Pullman (4) Susan Blackmore (5) David Randall (6) Barbara Ehrenreich.

              Hello Lester,
Let’s take one example Susan Blackmore a very well-known Psychologist and Author. She explains everything in her book “50 Voices of Disbelief. Why We Are Atheists”
“I spent twenty-five years of my life as a parapsychologist, hunting for, and never finding, such paranormal phenomena as telepathy, clairvoyance, ghosts and premonitions.”
She discusses a phenomenon that I have talked about with many people – Out of Body Experiences (OBEs). I have always insisted that these are products of our Brains and not Supernatural. She even describes the processes that go on in our brains during these events. As she says they “happen to something like 15% of people at some time in their life”.
“Both God and the paranormal entail concepts that are irrational, unsupported by evidence, and go against everything we know about how the universe works”. Please read it for yourself and don’t take quotes “out of context” because everyone can read what she says. https://www.susanblackmore.uk/chapters/giving-up-ghosts-and-gods/
Oh and try not to “Malle Pol” me.
              Best regards

                Hello Lester
                Barbara Ehrenreich https://whyevolutionistrue.com/2014/04/07/barbara-ehrenreich-had-a-vision-suspects-it-may-reflect-realities-beyond-our-ken/
Not paranormal experience – Psychological Not really an Atheist
“Thanks to a severely underfunded and poorly planned skiing trip, I was sleep-deprived and probably hypoglycemic that morning in 1959 when I stepped out alone, walked into the streets of Lone Pine, Calif., and saw the world — the mountains, the sky, the low scattered buildings — suddenly flame into life”.
                Michael Shermer https://michaelshermer.com/articles/do-anomalies-prove-gods-existence/#more-5889
Not a paranormal experience – Radio comes to life, my father used to kick his Radio into life
“Finally, just because I can’t explain something doesn’t mean it is inexplicable by natural means. The argument from personal incredulity doesn’t hold water on the skeptical seas”.

David J Randall Not an Atheist

                Car Sagan https://centerforinquiry.org/blog/sagans-candle-in-the-dark/

“Science is far from a perfect instrument of knowledge. It’s just the best we have”
As Sagan argued throughout his life, science is the great reality detector; it is the candle in the dark.

                Philip Pullman https://highprofiles.info/interview/philip-pullman/
                No Paranormal experience
“I don’t know whether I’m an atheist or an agnostic. I’m both, depending on where the standpoint is”.
“Trying to understand superstition rationally is like trying to pick up something made of wood by using a magnet”.

                Hello LankaScot,

In order for you to prove that paranormal phenomena, including out-of-body experiences, are impossible, you have to prove that everyone claiming to have such an experience is a charlatan. You cannot selectively focus on atheists. So you have to prove that Gabriel did not appear to Mohammad, God did not talk to Abraham, Jesus did not walk on water or turn fish into malu paan (maybe davidthegood ran away with the fish), Buddha did not see his past lives, etc. Excluding the Gabriel incident – which is a clear fabrication – I am neutral on the others. That does not mean I subscribe to any religion. I find it interesting that both Buddha and Jesus rejected the material/physical world, which is in agreement with QM.

What do you think about someone like Daniel Tammet, who memorized 22,000 digits of pi? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd1gywPOibg&ab_channel=ABCNews. Many humans have “latent powers” beyond the 5 senses that they are not aware of. Obviously not all humans. Science has no explanation as to why this is the case. Reincarnation is one possibility.

LankaScot, all this high-sounding gibberish rubbish that you and Lester exchange to be seen as gods to the others who write here, is a waste of time for all who have decent and rational brains in their heads. Tell me how, what you write here can help others. Don’t exalt yourself too high as the fall too will be very great. The Creator God Jehovah, had he not spoken to obedient Abraham in order to be able to bring Jesus on earth to remove sin, including yours as well, this world would be rolling in disaster. But now, those who accept truth are able to reconnect with God and have an eternally satisfying future in his presence. Those who reject will be eternally with the devil in hell fire.

                    Hello DTG,
I don’t claim anything other than that the real world exists and we live (and die) in it. Anyone that claims the existence of the Supernatural should provide objective testable evidence. Religions and People with Mystical beliefs cannot provide this type of evidence.
As for your claim about Abraham being talked to in order to bring Jesus or else “this world would be rolling in disaster”. Look around you (at the whole world) and tell me how it looks to you.
                    Best regards

LankaScot, supernatural is for a super experience and not to prove to atheist unbelievers who cannot experience what they call testable evidence in the physical natural world. It was the supernatural world that gave birth to the natural world. To me the world looks fairly ok as God still is and will always be in control, though evil led by the devil, is struggling to raise its head, but unable to touch the true believers.

                      Hello LankaScot,

A philosophy should be evaluated on the basis of its fundamental (underlying) doctrine, not the religious practices of the believers. Theravada Buddhism (philosophy) is fundamentally atheistic. Why do people go to Kataragama? Who cares. Buddha did not tell anyone they have to go there. Neither did he marry 9 year olds or order 600 captives to be chopped up in a single day or take hallucinogens and receive “revelations.”

                  Hello Lester,
If you claim it – you prove it.All religions that claim supernatural explanations reject real world explanations. Remember what Carl Sagan said “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”. Where is your evidence for reincarnation (belief that a dead person’s spirit returns to life in another body). Modern humans began with a small band of “Out of Africa” people. We are now nearly 8 Billion. So where did these extra 7 Billion or so souls come from? It is a ridiculous question and a ridiculous premise.
So Lester “no religion”, do you now claim to be an Atheist?

LankaScot, you are excellent. Jehovah God created Adam and Eve in his image, to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. Gen.1,28 It has happened. There is no reincarnation, but only resurrection of the dead like Jesus and the saints.

Henry Steel Olcott and his Secretary Balavatsky did not arrive in this country by chance, but by design. Long before their arrival Zionist Rothschild family had infiltrated, investing first, in a Tea Estate in the name of Rothschild Estate at Pussallawe, followed by Sogama Estate, in the same area, while the British were busy opening the Tea Industry. Two of the Banking Families that built America great are the Rothschild and Rockerfella. America’s Economy became strong by manufacturing Arms and selling them to warring countries. To sell Arms their had to be Conflict. Therefore conflict had to be created, either Race, Riligous or Border Conflict. This, America perfected in designing a world full of conflict to follow. As I mentioned, I believe Henry Steel Olcott and Balavatsky came here by design, under the pretext of Reviving Buddhism, projecting that Ceylon being a Buddhist Country was harassed by British Colonial Rule. To be fair, not a single Buddhist Temple went in to closure during British Rule. On the Contrary the first two Buddhist Temples in Colombo, the first at Kotahena, Deepaduttaaramaya and Issipathanaramaya down Greenlands road, were constructed with major financial help from Henry Steel Olcott. There after many Buddhist Temples encroaching age old Bo-trees in the City, sprang up that had been propagated by the Ubiquitous Crow, were collard by Buddhist Priests before Independence and the British did not try to object.

They were successful in turning a Philosophy in to a Militant Religion, seeking pride of place for Buddhism in a Multi Cultural, Multi Religious society where the majority were wooed to stand up against the minorities. Thus we had to face a Civil war for over 30 years spending heavily for Arms purchases. Taking advantage of the situation India armed and trained the LTTE to destabilize the country, until ’87 where the LTTE used a Surface To Air Missile, (SAM) to bring down an Avro Aircraft in Jaffna. India was unaware that the LTTE had SAMs. It was only then that India realized that there were other parties supplying Arms to the LTTE. Once probed they discovered the LTTE was getting Container Loads of sophisticated Arms via South Africa , Malaysia etc. This prompted Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi to come here and sign a Peace Accord and deploy the Indian Army in the North to regain control of the situation and sacrifice over a thousand Indian Soldiers in the exercise. The Americans like this, created conflict all over the world, where they made a kill on the Sale of Arms.

Gamini – From what I’ve gathered they, the Yankees, were behind even the 1983 riots, and most probably burning of Jaffna library too. This was still being the cold war era, and India unlike today being a Russian ally, where as JRJ was happily sleeping with the Yankees, and the Japs, who have come under the Yankee thumbs following the A-bombs dropped on them, Sinhalese have been ruthlessly used to the American advantage to go against Tamils and Indians. The whole 30 years war I’m sure was a result of American foreign policy and its impact on the region.

Ruchira, you say 30-year war was Americal foreign policy. It was due to Velupillai Prabakaran and the day he died was the day the war died but claimed by Rajas.

DTG – Thank you. Yes, I did contemplate long about this thing called forgiving, though I am not religious, Buddhism doesn’t advocate revenge too. In fact it actively discourages and opposes it. Gorgiving in my opinion has a role in certain contexts. But not as a general rule of thumb. For ecample do you think hitler should gave been forgiven and continued to do what he does? Though I used the term revenge, the activities proposed are not unnecessarily solely motivated by revenge. They have become necessary to prevent the kind of things that jas happened no longer happen in the future. Sometimes whether one likes it or not, revenge is a good motivator to implement them as they are the only measures through justice could be restored. Hope I did not confuse you. Let me know of you need further clarifications.

We also saw it with the Sri Lankan student (21) who killed 6 innocent people in Canada two months ago, however the Canadian police took every effort not to show any sensitive pictures to anyone.

I have enough examples among lanken medical doctors, lectureres, Profs and other high professionals, most of them dont use their brains. nor do they respect FACTs but just bend their heads before thugs.
                      :
SRILANKEN culture has made them nothing else. I lived my early 2 decades to make my judgements about the people. I love the landscapes and natural beauty of the country that has to offer, but srilanken people as a whole are real beasts.
                      :
They heroworship high criminals. 15 long years of RAJAPAKSHE Tyranny did not emerge for nothing, it is the culture and indiffierence nature of people let it happening.

                      Ruchira,
“Just throw in cast and creed as well,”
Did you or did you not write the following under Harsha Gunasena’s article?
“They are suffering from a severe case of casteism. Since this presentatin has been made by a non-Govigama caste person and funds to realisation of which therefore may channelled to a good extent through non- govigama caste individuals”

                  LM,
It wasn’t just YouTube, it was on most TV channels as well, even Derana, a channel which even blurs out traffic accidents

                    My dear OC,

Media is above the LAW AND ORDER in srilanka… this is the best evidence.
                    *
It shows the low level of the “main Sri Lankan media”. The so-called Bar Association and others are silent. AKD and similar gods are also not voiced enough.
                    *
I have always said, the downfall of Sri Lanka is a curse for the Sri Lankan media. Rajapakse has raped not only the women provided by the murdered Club Wasantha, but many people in that country
                    *
You then compared it to US-FOX News. For me, it is thousands of times WORST the level of FOX and similar TV channels in Europe.

May SRILANKA be belssed with brains !

              LS,
We are waiting for him to mention us the prescribed group of antidepressants: everyone may be sick, but we cannot let the sick lead us astray… can’t we?
              .
It opens up the true “mental state” of the person and allows us to make our own judgements. I would not utter a single word against any kind of mental patients. As we work with patients in our clinical trials, I have a certain respect for them. I once shared with our OC on this.
              .
However, I really don’t want to read psychopaths until they prove they’re normal.

          Hello Gamini,
The Theosophists were here in the late 1800s and early 1900s. So they had to wait another 80 years before their plan took effect. Something doesn’t make sense. Remember the British were in control until 1948.
However this does make sense –
“Anagarika Dharmapāla is noted because he was:
          The first global Buddhist missionary
One of the founding contributors of (so called) non-violent Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism
A leading figure in the Sri Lankan independence movement against British rule”.

I think his notorious Racist Propaganda had more to do with Sri Lanka’s problems than the Theosophist Influence
          Best regards

              Chiv,
I was born sinhala buddhist as every buddhist in our motherland. But I am no longer SB buddhist today.
With my migration for europe 30 years ago, exposed me to the world and world religions. There my question regarding the world religions was explored well. SRIALNKA is not dominated by true buddhism.
SINHALA-BUDDHISM is a living form for racists sinhalayas above other minorities in that beautiful country.
If anyone would promote it today, he or she should be racial and stupid too.
              .
However, I dont want to change to other religions other than true buddhism as of today. I do believe in super natural powers and super natural talents of some people.

I believe in prodigies considering the uniqueness of genetics and resulting cognitive ablities. There are highly talented living beings aso as some wonder children that start their university education at the age of 10 or younger.

Dear LS, your comments always bring me forward and cause me to cross question why on earth do lankens hang on a belief, which is not explained in “true teachings of buddha as the great teacher in non-violence”.

“I think his notorious Racist Propaganda had more to do with Sri Lanka’s problems than the Theosophist Influence”

Notorious racist propaganda is interwined with sinhala culture. People also Z-genzers dont have brains to cross question about it yet today. It is like engrained in their mindset.
            .
Even if buddhism is not into ” god’s belief” however, srilanken buddhist monks preach focusing on the gods. There are also stanzas that are being recited by SB prayers that they continue in the prayers in any buddhistic events.
Following excerpt will show you, how much lanken buddhism is interwined with god prayers. .

“They were successful in turning a Philosophy in to a Militant Religion,”

That is not true. The monks never advocated for war. There is no “jihad” in Buddhism. In fact, monks like Dharmapala helped to liberate thousands of Dalits in India from their caste bondage. The monks did not advocate violence against missionaries or Christians or other minorities. They debated these people; this is all well-documented. While they were debating, Christian churches and schools were growing in number. The origins of Tamil separatism have more to do with DMK ideology than Sinhalese nationalism. As for so-called “genocide”, the Sri Lankan Tamil population was 1,886,900 in 1981, 2,124,000 in 1984, and 2,270,924 in 2012. So the population actually increased despite the so-called “genocide.”

Reading this article and the comments ……… one is left with only one thought ……

People never cease to find convoluted complex “intelligent” ways to be foolish …….. even brilliant ways to be foolish ………
