May Day Is D-Day For The SLFP

By Hilmy Ahamed

President Maithripala Sirisena and Mahinda Rajapaksa’s gamble to show their strengths in Galle and Kirulapone would be the final nail in the coffin of the “united” Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would see an avalanche, charging him of destroying the SLFP. It’s yet to be seen how the die-hard SLFPer’s respond. There is no doubt, the split SLFP will need to go in to a long period of hibernation and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the present day crafty political fox would have been signing all the way to Campbell park. It was just a few years ago that critics labeled Ranil Wickremesinghe as a non-entity? His ability to weather the political storm confirms his maturity as a leader and there is no doubt that under his leadership, Sri Lanka has the best chance of getting out of the debt crisis, political instability, corruption and nepotism.

The welcome concept of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in uniting the SLFP and the United National Party (UNP) to address the core development and financial crisis facing Sri Lanka through a coalition that could come to consensus, putting country first before petty political differences is unprecedented. Regretfully, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s shameful foray into electoral politics posed the biggest threat to this noble cause. To save Yahapalanaya, the former undesirables were recruited in to government. The corrupt, leftist and the small Sinhala chauvinistic parties that would have been wiped off from parliamentary in future elections have done well to hoodwink Mahinda Rajapaksa to believe that he still has a role to play in the future of the nation as a leader. (A close friend of mine, aptly responded to this theory “hasn’t Mahinda and Co. made enough to “Rest In Peace”, haven’t they destroy enough of the democratic norms that we were so proud of in the South Asian region”?) Whatever the answer is, President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s refusal to bow down gracefully after the rejection of his leadership by the majority of the voters at the presidential elections in 2015 probably will go down in history as the biggest betrayal of Sri Lanka’s progress. President Sirisena, who still enjoys absolute executive powers, declared through the media his intention to act tough after May Day. Will this take the route of vengeance or just proper governance?Mahinda May 01, 2016

There is no doubt that Yahapalanaya has disappointed the majority who risked their lives to bring about the change in January 2015. Still, the democracy that has been re-established alone can be considered adequate compensation in the short term. There is a long road ahead and our good governance mechanisms should be strengthened to address corruption, rule of law, independence and transparency.

The entry of the “former rouges” in to the current government probably killed the noble Buddhist monk, Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero who spearheaded the Yahapalanaya concept. At least as a mark of respect to his departed soul, the true concept of yahapalanaya needs to be reestablished.

The current government’s sudden realization that the economy is in dire straights is laughable. Where were the brilliant economist and pundits who screamed from public platforms that they had the solution to ensure economic progress without burdening the people? Today, in power with a two third majority in parliament, they have forgotten the solemn promises of their election platforms. Nothing changes in Sri Lankan politics. Another replaces one bad lot and the citizens are betrayed. The new lot outsmarts the other in the corruption, waste and nepotism indices.

The Yahapalanaya’s first folly was the abandonment/suspension of the major development activity that had kept the economy alive. There is no doubt that this was done to inquire in to the alleged widespread corruption that was assumed as part and parcel of the Rajapaksa regime, but 16 months on, nothing has been proven or cleaned up. There is an absolute necessity to complete these development projects to ensure that the colossal funds spent are not lost.

The port city project is to restart soon and without any major change. The government continues with their hosannas of having negotiated better, but the citizens are yet to see the details. The other major controversy was the 8 billion that the government claimed was stacked away in Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s private bank account. This turned out to be the money from the sale of the Defense Ministry land at Galle Face that was to be used for the construction of the defense headquarters in Battaramulla. The government happily doled out this 8 billion and many more in a sunshine budget to win the August 2015 General Elections. Who is going to be held responsible for the colossal loses due to the delays in completing all these development projects?

It is indeed regrettable that the brilliant city planning undertaken by Gotabaya Rajapaksa has gone to dogs, or should one say, “dogs have come in to city planning”? Sri Lanka’s urban cities are fading back to the pre Rajapaksa era where garbage is not being collected, pavements have become a menace to the pedestrians, and the underworld has had a revival, to name a few.

Could anything get better after this May Day? The political Leftist turned capitalists who now cannot continue without their perks and privileges of office that were doled out during the last decade have turn to Mahinda for solace. They have convinced Mahinda Rajapaksa that he could lead them once again to victory. Isn’t it time that Mahinda Rajapaksa bowed out gracefully into his well deserved retirement, and support President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to expunge the corrupt and bring in true Yahapalanaya. Isn’t it time that only the best from the former regime are taken into the government and spearhead the noble ideals of Yahapalanaya. Would this mean hara-kiri for the Rajapaksa clan?

Isn’t it time that these desperate political leaders stop the colossal waste of public funds on May Day political tamasha? May this May Day bring sanity to the political leadership of the country and refrain from celebrating May Day as a political weapon? Let the real workers have their say every MAY DAY and politicians go back to take care of the legislature.

The man is still a non-entity. His leadership will give us the Muslims the best chance, but he has no chance of getting SL out of debt, corruption and nepotism. He is a dud.

At last, I have seen some unbiased writing from you.

Your comments may hurt the “Yahapalanya” boot lickers.

    Hilmy Ahamed,

“”Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa would see an avalanche, charging him of destroying the SLFP. It’s yet to be seen how the die-hard SLFPer’s respond.””

Lets get it straight. It’s the cloak and dagger thinking of Muslims.
You can never have BBS Gota but under the present state they are the only ones who can raise the nation off the spiral. There is a way for muslims to get around them and drive away the long standing top cat muslims who are just leaches eating into your own fabric. This is public space or I shall spell out ..the who practices what- Take a walk and just observe them whizz past as if it is not the usual thing you do.

“It was just a few years ago that critics labeled Ranil Wickremesinghe as a non-entity?”
That is because they are time servers and are clueless of Tao/Dao father of Gautama.
The subtlety of stupidity the advantage of lying low.
Blessed are the idiots for they are the happiest people on earth.
All Ranil does is being a fool all day long- Like the Hegal Eggheads who own the island.

Domino, why the hell are you attacking hilmi as a Muslim. He has not written anything about his race. People like you should have the Domino effect and be grounded from humanity, because there is no need to bring religious or racial connotations in to every thing. Hilmi of course has been defending his race on many issues, but this article is as neutral as it could get.

Domino Effect/ slippery slope/Camels Nose.- Fallacy

        http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/slippery-slope.html

The Slippery Slope is a fallacy in which a person asserts that some event must inevitably follow from another without any argument for the inevitability of the event in question. In most cases, there are a series of steps or gradations between one event and the one in question and no reason is given as to why the intervening steps or gradations will simply be bypassed. This “argument” has the following form:….

The Sirisena Wickramasinghe cabal has destroyed the hard fought freedom by the Rajapaksa administration. They have allowed the LTTE to regroup. What can an inexperienced Wijewardene do in comparison to the brilliancy of Gota and Mahinda.

        request cont-
Carter years’ Time magazine carried out a survey of university staff worldwide as to how many read outside their subject of teaching apart from newspapers and magazines so they found less than 5% did.
The commentators and ct itself is school level in an international exposure so inevitably become possessive and arrogant and added to it they hide under a woman’s skirt complaining about other post’s like the fathers of freedom of the island. It’s stupid of them to draw our attention to clauses when in fact it should read `please clarify` and the worse is total edit out. Very narrow minded folk just like Iglesias show.
The reason I dislike detiling is as I have posted before.- I hate people who steal my ideas, before I think of them.

    Hilmy Ahamed.

Are you quite serious when you write…

Isnt it time that Mahinda Rajapakse bowed out gracefully into his well deserved retirement and support President Maithripala Sirisena and PM.RW.TO EXPUNGE THE CORRUPT AND BRING IN TRUE YAHALPANAYA…

So you want MaRa to expunge the corrupt eh?!

    Hilmy think again.

Ranil never was able to contribute to any economic revival in any of his past positions as a political heavyweight nor has he achieved any tangible progress in his present incarnation as PM.

Secondly what were you thinking when you wrote that Hora MR should join the government to wipe out corruption. Amazing acumen.

    • 1
      7

So BBS, you think it is the MR regime who is capable of managing the economy. Dont forget, Ranil took over a country with negative growth from Chandrika and turned it around in just 18 months. He is doing the same with MR’s folly. If you dont accept it, you go see a shrink.

Well this writer is living in La La Land. MY3 won with UNP, SLMC and TNA votes. The difference was 400k votes between MR and MY3. So to say MR was rejected by the people is valid in Kaththankudy not in majority sinhala electorates. MY3 has no legitimacy in the SLFP. SLFP will not split closer to the next election the rump of SLFP and sections of UNP will line up with MT because that is where the peoples sentiments are although it is unpalatable for guys like Hilmy. Also when Hilmy write about MR being corrupt it leaves a bad taste because he has not written anything about Hakeem or Bathudeen who are disgrace full turncoat fat cats. So before disparaging a war winning great Sinhala hero you should at least expose the Thambi turncoats.

The unpatriotic beast doesn’t want to accept that the minorities created the change for all Sri Lankans. Stupid Sinhala chauvinists like patriot are reason for the world to brand Sri Lanka as a PARIAH nation. Today, we have a chance to be part of the real world and with the lifting of the fish export sanctions to europe and GSP plus facility and the huge loans and investments pledged, there is no room for fanatics or racist in the future Sri Lanka. So it is time that Maithri puts a few of these so called patriots and rogues to welikada or bogambara

Patriot, you are forgetting that MR won in 2005 with less than 140,000 votes. That is after defranching 500,000 UNPers in Colombo and denying the Tamils the right to vote by bribing Prabakaran with 500 million. The evidence was provided by Tiran Alles when he fell out with Mahinda. The other person was Sripathi Sooriyarachi who knew all the details. He was killed by Israeli agents who locked the steering of Sripathi’s by remote control when it was traveling at 130 k/h under the orders of Gota. So, these murders never could have reached the presidency without their brute force

Interesting. But indeed it is funny how he has not spoken about corruption in housing in Mannar, the Heroin smuggling(ask any top commander in the Army base in Mannar), and the vast chain of corruption, drug dealing etc and of course switching to the winning side to always retain portfolios by certain people who happen to play the minority card. Hilmy, I too wonder why you, Farouk etc have never taken head on the Wilpattu land grab, HEROIN smuggling etc.,

As for the SLFP, its split will greatly benefit RW. UNP got invigorated because My3 was made the candidate. IF RW was made the candidate, he again would have lost in Jan 2015. Thanks to My3 UNP got rejuvenated. They act now like they were always winners. That is such a load of baloney and arrogance. Their leaders are posting bragging messages about how many people they had at their Rally(yes their’s was the biggest May day rally). But think about it. Colombo and suburbs have always been UNP. Christian areas like Moratuwa always have been more UNP. So they all brought people in via quotas, money, arrack perhaps and free food and loads of wealth the UNP is oozing with. Reality is now SLFP is history with MR’s sons going to jail and MR just meandering along. His rally did not get too much support but he remains very popular with Sinhalese people.

The Rajapaksa’s wil; continue to be a pain in the butt until and unless all of them are put behind bars for the murder of my dear friend and brother Wasim and the numerous corruption charges hanging over their head. How can a simple naval rating own billions worth of property, how can a just passed out synthetic lawyer own hotels and real estate in Dubai, Seychelles, and New York. Its time Sri Lanka recovered the loot.

Hilmy Ahamed is a known UNP stooge. He was responsible for many crossover MPs who betrayed Mahinda Rajapaksa including Fiaser Musthpa and other Muslim MPs. His picture was published in Sinhala and English newspapers. If Mahinda had won, hilmy would have fled the country with the help of his american friends. So we cannot expect anything else but praises about the UNP

Could you also analyse the presidential election results of 2005 and show us how each member of coalition party and Muslim votes contributed the victory of clan.

My understanding of a president of Sri Lanka getting legitimacy is from a total number of votes he/she polled. Could you cite constitution/election related laws which may contradict my understanding of how a president is elected in this island.

You must be a student of the great war monger, war crime denier and miserably failed Marxist.

Hilmy! you don’t know about Sri Lankan people! They make the correct decision at the correct time! SLFP is seemingly divided but it is not really divided! When the time comes, it will be a force like a Tsunami and no UNP leader (even with My3’s help) will be able to stop it!

    1. Fist, there is no ‘soul’ in Buddhism and you should learn Buddhism’s basics as a writer before making comments on Ven. Sobhita.
    2. ‘former rogues’ are a plan of the calculated Yahapalan conspiracy and it is being revealed now! Sajin Vaas, Mutuhettigama, Mervyn Silva, and the attacker of ‘nava parapura’ (newly appointed Hiriyala SLFP organiser) are all part of the game plan.
You call Prime Minister Ranil W the ‘present day crafty political fox’. But the general public is keeping an eye, a very close eye on the matter! If they find any ‘fox’ they will deal with it and many will be surprised on how they do it!

Its a strange twist of fate that Rajapaksa’s have now chosen to seek the assistance of the international community to save their ass… from Yahapalanaya. America has already provided Gota with refuse and there is no doubt tha RW’s hands would be twisted to drop murder, money laundering and absolute corruption charges against the Rajapaksa clan. Remember, even if Ranil pardons, the gods above will rpovide justics
