Mayhem In Yellow Robes Or True Patriotism?

By Vishwamithra1984

If you must break the law, do it to seize power: in all other cases observe it.” – Julius Caesar

He is in the news again. Parading in yellow robes, portraying himself as a martyr of the present day and savior of Sinhalese Buddhists, Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thero, a Buddhist monk whose credentials are more of a homage to a defeated regime of corruption and deceit than a parade of a victorious army, played another one of his infamous ploys and this time too, came out a loser. The country’s judiciary is no more enslaved by a ruling clan; its pride is no more compromised or damaged by near-midnight telephone calls from the powers that be; it is independent and showing it.

BBS GnanasaraLeave alone the Supreme Court and Appeal Court; the High Court and all other judicial courts below that and their standard bearers- learned judges of our court system- are dispensing justice as it should be. A classic case is when this Buddhist Monk was, firstly accused of insulting the country’s court system and then arresting him- yes arresting him this charlatan of a Monk- Galagoda Atte Gnanasara for his unruly behavior. As one writer penned: “in fact, this is not the first time where he has been taking both Buddhists in particular and Sri Lankans in general on a jolly good ride into make them believe as if he is some sort of born again reformist working to protect the interests of this country. Neither will this be the last…”

Long before this happened, during the former regime when he received unparalleled patronage from the ruling family, I penned more than one column in arousing the awareness of the foulmouthed and uncivilized conduct of this individual who calls himself the savior of Sinhalese-Buddhist values. However, our mainstream media, as in the case of their American counterpart in the far West lending credence and unlimited exposure to a shameful pretender like Donald Trump, is blowing out of proportion the whole melodrama enacted by Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thero.

Media loves to hang onto sensationalism. Some tabloids which pretend to be newspapers, make sensationalism their daily bread and butter and in the process give validity to manufactured news stories; some lend legitimacy to rumors without any provision for fact-checking and some print, telecast and broadcast outright lies. One can understand some exaggerations and embellishments. Yet when such exaggerations surpass the journalistic boundaries of the times, readers and viewers would seriously question, not only the authenticity of the subjects they write about, the credibility of the writers too becomes highly questionable and they seem to be deeply embedded in vested interests.

This is only the beginning, we have never betrayed our struggles, so give me two days” Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara said the other day addressing the protestors outside the premises of Homagama Magistrate court, prior to being taken away from the court. His tantrums seem to have reached a point of no-return. Only losers and megalomaniacs such as Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thero use such lingo and misconceived clichés.

President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremasinghe have opted to be silent on this whole incident, and quite rightly so. Whoever politician choosing to react to the arrest of this Monk must think twice before doing so. Such remarks or comments, whether pro or anti, might give them headlines in a tabloid or two, but the shelf life of such publicity attributable to those who indulge in those remarks and comments would be worth only a day or two. The people at large are so immersed in daily chores; the cost of living is out of control; wages are stagnating and unemployment on the rise. If the Government does not take timely action to curb the rise of these unrests, other socio-religious issues might again come to occupy the upper layers of public discourse.

When socio-religious issues overtake economic issues, especially at election times- even though we are currently not in such a time- the collective mindset of a people gets easily warped; that mindset becomes easily receptive to half-truths and total lies, giving way to unruly elements of society to shape and reshape the issues; it directs the flow of information as well as opinions in sharply destructive ways. No more blood has been shed in all human history than in the name of religion. All religions, barring none and the very concept of religion itself advocate kindness, forgiveness, love and compassion and tolerance of all beings. However, those who practice religion, the clergy of all religions, define and redefine their respective religions to suit their own idiosyncrasies and parochial goals; they defile the very foundations of their religions for meager gains, for Mercedes cars and BMWs.

The unrestrained arrogance that some of the clergy displays when they are cocooned in the exalted catacombs of power, their callous disregard for the needy and poor, their hypocrisy towering above the very temple walls that they inhabit within, are all part the decay that has set in in the modern world.

Yet, the unreserved power and wealth that is being showered upon them by cowardly politicians, constitutional predominance granted for selected religions and thereby banishing the concept of a ‘secular’ country have methodically driven the nation’s conscience to unconscionable degree. The very decay of morals and ethics have begun at the point of beginning- temples, churches, mosques and kovils.

Palatial houses, instead of humble and modest dwelling places for Monks, priests or imams, are crowding the country’s landscape. Caste becomes the main criterion when Monks are ordained in the various ‘Nikayas’ and sects. History is abundant with colossal buildings and remarkable architecture of our ancient rulers; Buddha statues and massive irrigation systems bear testimony to a unique culture of art, science and above all a collective mind of a nation at peace with itself. As Joseph Conrad, the Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language said: ‘A caricature is putting the face of a joke on the body of a truth’. But we must not lose faith; nor should we abandon our craving for better times.

Nevertheless, faith alone is not going to deliver us. History is crowded with falls and rises of many a civilized nation. The enormity of wealth and technological advancement that the modern world has bestowed upon man is taking its toll. But the brave and wise would know where to draw the line between moral and immoral. Those who dare would always find a place to rest and ponder; they would never cease to grope and explore for man’s mind is the most extraordinary miracle in the universe. And it is not at the end of a ‘creation’, but in fact, at the very beginning of intellectual curiosity in the long story of evolution.

Galagoda Atte Gnanasara is not the last corrupt Buddhist Monk and he certainly is not going to be the last. A savvy union between these corrupt members of the clergy and the ruling class is the first and last autograph of a society in conflict with itself. What was in display during the last five years of the Rajapaksa era is not prevalent any more. Thankfully, the current leadership of the State is willfully keeping away from patronizing such dregs of society.

Dante Alighieri, author of Divine Comedy wrote: “The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis”. Devine Comedy is widely considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature. All who consider themselves worthy cannot just snub and discount the joke of patriotism that is being propagandized these charlatans of the clergy and look the other way. If one chooses to do so would invariably do it at his or her peril.

Galagoda Atte Gnanasara is not the disease. He is not the virus. He is a carrier of the virus who needs to be stopped, of course within the lofty boundaries of the law and sublime expanse of wisdom.

I think the Mahanayakes of the various chapters in Sri Lanka should take equal blame for this disgraceful behavior. Even when Muslims and their places of worship were attacked in the name of Buddhism none of them came out and condemned let alone disciplining scoundrels in robes.

what about when muslims forcefully acquired the lands kuragala, devanagala, muhudu maha vihara, deegawapi…..etc? Did muslim religious leaders condemn that?

please cut the crap and provide evidence to support your claim. You come on a public forum and dish out nonsenses without any basis! Are you telling me that no one can challenge those alleged forceful occupations by the Muslims? Please have some sense!

You simply hate the Muslims; this is the reality and you do not care as to what you say as long as you can disparage them, you are satisfied! What a fellow!

                ballah,

As I expected, you cannot produce evidence because there is none! The world hates the Islamic Fundamentalist ideology as with any form of fundamentalism, which includes Sinhala and Tamil fundamentalisms as well! It is crystal clear that you belong to the Sinhala chauvinistic fringe and then you have the audacity to talk about the Muslims.

You do not have the mental capacity to distinguish between Muslim fundamentalism and Muslims; you just hate them because they are Muslims! This proves that you are a complete bigot full stop!

It is profoundly important to curb people of your ilk. You are far more dangerous and distractive and hope you will have no space to create havoc!

you’re either a muslim extremist or a para sinhalese, that’s why you don’t see the elephant in the room. may be you see the problem yet seem to ignore it, maybe due to the benefits you get from muslims. People like you are most dangerous because you allow muslims extremists to grow.

                    ballah,

Let’s be civilised shall we? You stated unequivocally that Muslims forcefully acquired land on 10 of Feb 2016 on this forum. You must have reasons to conclude as such. So, I asked for evidence to support your statement. It is simple; you provide evidence or related legitimate articles to this effect and I learn from you and move on. This is what usually happens on these forums. One cannot make an unsubstantiated statement merely to disparage a community!

I am a Jaffna Tamil. All Sinhala including the chauvinistic fringe expediently criticised that VP ethnically cleansed the North by ejecting Muslims unceremoniously. Rightly so. It was an inhumaine act of heartless egregious act. At that time people like you were the protectors of the Muslims. Now that the Tamils have been put in their place you have started on the Muslims. Once you have finished with Muslims you will start on the Christians. It is because your ilk think that Sri Lanka is yours and yours alone. You cannot bear the other to prosper. It is as simple as that.

I asked for evidence to support your statement, you make reference to Islamic fundamentalism and world is against it etc. It is totally irrelavent to the matter in question. I too have concerns about arabisation of the Sri Lankan Muslims; it is a matter not only a concern for nonmuslims but for the Muslims themselves. There is an organised Islamic fundamental based teachings pervading through the social media. It is something that needs to curbed and it is a collective effort from all of us. The present government is tasked with building a just Sri Lanka that means all forms of fundamentalism must be done away with including the BBS type!

Well said Vishwamithra1984. Cannot agree with you more.

But knowing what Sri Lanka is, a society incessantly brain bashed since childhood into believing Mahanama myths, incessantly brain bashed into worshipping anything and everything that has the slightest bit of authority and reducing it into nothing but an inglorious ‘wakutuveyang’ society, quotes from Dante, Julius Caesar or Joseph Conrad, like Bob Dylan sings “is blowin’ in the wind, The answer is blowin’ in the wind”.

    I thought it was odd.

Who beats up a Buddhist monk on a Poya day? That is what sparked the Aluthgama riots.

The local cops deliberately or otherwise did not do their duty. They did not arrest the 3 youths involved. They did not keep the crowds apart to prevent a riot – all basic police duties.

Gnahasara descends on Aluthgama as he is given police permission to conduct himself inflaming the situation more.

One of the most violent rioters shot dead in the melee is a Tamil. Where did this Tamil come from? Is he local?

There are strong signs of design here – none of which will be picked by “Sri Lanka Police Intelligence” who is an oxymoron!

There will be flashpoints like that where Moslems will get beaten up until UN Human Rights issues properly come to a conclusion.

The cops will need to be vigilant. I think FM Sarath Fonseka should be made in charge of law-and-order.

Sri Lankan buddhists monks are well aware many christians try to send women journalists alone to meet well known monks and try to photograph for character assassination. Secondly this writer is an idiot who does not know anything about Buddhism. the use of the word, Faith implies that he is a christian.

It is christianity and Islam which are faiths, and not buddhism.

Even in CT it was published. KALAMA suthra says, investigate very well before accepting.

Because of that investigation now, now westerns don’t like christianity.

          But, you said,

/It is christianity and Islam which are faiths, and not buddhism./

          So, Buddhism is…?

Buddhist monks ‘converted’ kings and local chieftains to Buddhism in the past. Once the kings were converted, and the monks had access to people, people ‘followed’ Buddhism.

Can you explain to people how Devanampiya Tissa of Anuradhapura became a Buddhist? There are soft conversions and there are hard conversions. The ancestors of JR, Banadaranaike and such were not forcibly converted to Christianity. Many Tamils became Christians for the benefits (the rich families) and to elevate their social status 9so called lower castes).

          Go investigate.

          But, answer my question first.

Buddhism is NOT a religion. Hinduism is NOT a religion.

Buddha rejected idol worship and the concept of God. But…?

GAG’s impunity may be compromised but Sri Lanka has a long way to go in the fight to defeat RACISM.

The Right to Information is crucially important to educate the public on the need to be critical of racism and hate speech. Sri Lankan and particularly Sinhala majority politicians have time and again used Hate Speech and religious hatred to DISTRACT people from criminality and corruption.

The link between political corruption and the spread of hate speech must be clearly made so the public can be educated about the meaning of good governance and democracy.

We need the RIGHT TO INFORMATION BILL?
What happened to the speech that Ranil W was to make in Parliament about Mahinda Jarapassa family’s overseas bank accounts full of looted funds?
Jarapassa family used GAG and Sinhala Buddhist racism to delude and distract the Sinhala moda masses from their corruption and criminality.

The people of the Sri Lanka have a right to know and to be POLITICALLY EDUCATED on the link between CORRUPTION and HATE SPEECH and:
    1. From Which COUNTRY was the illegal money laundered funds came to Carlon Sports (CSN) that is under investigation? Which member of the Jarapassa family has the largest store of wealth?
    2. How and where EPF and ETF funds are invested.
    3. Which Countries and Banks gave bad loans for useless development projects and which banks and financial outfits were involved in hedging deals and money laundering
    4. Which Ministrers/ministries own most of the national debt?

I am afraid hate speech must be prohibited by law whether indulged in by Buddhist monks or laymen. We should adopt the Indian law against hate speech. If the authorities choose to ignore they will be indirectly encouraging such hate speech. Our national unity is too delicate to face such challenges as by this monk. If the authorities want ethnic and religious peace it must bring in a law against hate speech and implement it. There is no movement or body to counteract the vituperation s of monks like this. We need to be on our guard to prevent threats to our national unity by actions such as those of the monk.

Where did they forcefully convert Buddhist to other religions?

    Violence in Holy Books

An analysis of the Bible and the Quran has found that violence and destruction are discussed more frequently in Christian scripture than in the Islamic text.

Of the three texts, the content in the Old Testament appears to be the most violent.

    1st Old Testament – 5.3%
    2nd New Testament – 2.8%
    3rd Quran – 2.1%

Only marginally different and all should X rated for violent content. In my opinion parental guidance is necessary for any one who dares to read them.

Gnanasara is an aberration and is guilty of insulting and angry speech. He has spoken about dying for Buddhism but not for killing others. In the Holy books killing is the norm, recommended, compulsory, punishable if not done and rewarding if done.

The Unfortunate part of this Virus Carrier, is that He is Infecting the more Unintelligent and Self-Seeking of the Sangha.

They have come to believe that it is Right thing to promote a form of Intolerant, ‘Sinhala Buddhism’ at the cost of the Buddha’s Dhamma, and His Philosophy of Maithri, Karuna, Muditha and Upekhkha!

It is so Sad to hear Members of the Sangha calling on Devotees to Work for the ‘Ratata, Jathiyata, Agamata’ when the Buddha Specifically stated that His Dhamma was not an ‘Agama’, and was not reserved for any special ‘Jathiya’or ‘Rata’.

How else could The Buddha’s Dhamma have spread so Far and Wide in Today’s World?

This buddhist priest is not a true disciple of the Ven Buddha. He is just another sad, lonely, illdisciplined, mentally unstable, hallucinating, sleep deprived, love starved, violence thirsty, person bound in a yellow robe. He cannot enjoy the good things in life like a normal God loving individual. What he sees is what is not beyond his nose. He is short sighted in all that he sees therefore he needs forgiving and love. May the good God ( the author of all goodness ) look down upon this miserable man and have pity upon him.

St Paul says the following in the old testament.
” The good that i want to do i am unable to do because of the EVIL in me.”

St Paul persecuted Christ violently but in the end the power of Christ brought him down and turned him into a faithfull disciple.

The Rev GAGT needs the same treatment and he may get it through some divine intervention. In the meantime my sympathies go out to him because he alone knows how he feels inside himself. The frustration that he cannot enjoy some good things in life must be eating into him bodily amd mentally like a vicious Cancer. Cancer can be cured but frustration cannot be eliminated.

I shall end with a famous statement made by the infamous Cardinal Wolsey during the reign of King Henry the 8th. Cardinal Wolsey was the person who advised Henry the 8th on all matters but in the end ended up as his enemy. Cardinal Wolsey was dying from acute and severe dysentry when he was summoned to appear before the court of king Henry the 8th. His final words were ” If i had served my God in the same manner i had served my king, he would not have left me naked and open to my enemies.”

May be the rev GAGT might be at the same receiving end. Who knows.

Because, buddhists know life is suffering.

But, there are enlightened arahats in the world. They don’t publicize that. IT is that precious.

    Edwin Rodrigo,

Two thumbs up!!! on finishing him off.

But he might end up a hero posthumously among his clan.

Let him rot in jail and die off in oblivion.

      Exactly Barus,

We know what is good and what is bad. No need for these saintly hypocrites to tell us that. Just as we don’t want MR to be judged by other countries we do not want Gnansara to be judged by these child molesters.

        To: Edwin Rodrigo.

If you know what is good and what is bad then contribute that knowledge to the progress of your country. People like you wallow in the cesspit of adding fuel to fire or salt to wounds.
Your poor insight to all things is leading your country downwards to the dark ages.
May God the author of all goodness give you wisdom to see life in his light and may God forgive and enlighten the Rev AGAT for he too is prone to making mistakes just like you.
What is left after all your good countrymen have left for greener pastures is mad men like you. God bless you.

In Christians Terms, there Are Angles, Millions or billions, we agree.

But, the Creator aka Almighty, only you are in your world, I am in my world.

Buddhism is the only religion which says that There were Samyak Sambuddhas as much as sand grains on earth.

Christianity is just Jesus who was a Buddhist monk who was Martyred by the Roman Rulers for their sake.

Thun saranai to you one day.

From “God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins:

“God ordered Abraham to make a burnt offering of his longed-for son. Abraham built an altar, put firewood upon it, and trussed Isaac up on top of the wood.

His murdering knife was already in his hand when an angel dramatically intervened with the news of a last-minute change of plan: God was only joking after all, ‘tempting’ Abraham, and testing his faith. A modern moralist cannot help but wonder how a child could ever recover from such psychological trauma.

By the standards of modern morality, this disgraceful story is an example simultaneously of child abuse, bullying in two asymmetrical power relationships, and the first recorded use of the Nuremberg defense: ‘I was only obeying orders.’ Yet the legend is one of the great foundational myths of all three monotheistic religions.

The type of people who are speaking about Gnanasara, like you, are the ones who consider such things as Godly. To me, even the Kotadeniyawa murderer of Seya seems to be a saint compared to the person described above.

Where do you think our country will be led to if we leave it to deluded maniacs like you? We will not allow that. If at all, it will have to be over our dead bodies.

Don’t say God Bless to me. I would rather be seen dead in a ditch with a foul smelling carcass of a dead pig than to be blessed by someone like him.
