Newly appointed Mass Media Secretary, Nimal Bopage was involved in yet another stunt on Friday morning, after he allegedly stormed into the office of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and demanded it’s hierarchy and employees to apologise to him for carrying an unfavourable news item on him.
Highly places sources said that a furious Bopage had walked into Rupavahini, summoned the staff, including it’s chairman and had demanded they apologise to him after a presenter at the television station had reportedly read out an article during the ‘Ada (Today) – News paper Review’ programme which said that Bopage was to be removed from his ministerial position.
The staff had however refused to apologise to the ministry secretary.
Meanwhile, when Colombo Telegraph contacted Chairman of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Ravi Jayawardena, he denied any such incident and said that Bopage only visited the Rupavahini office to discuss official matters in his current capacity as the new secretary to the ministry of mass media. “No, no nothing like this happened. He came to meet us and discuss matters pertaining to our functions, as he just took over office as secretary only recently,” Jayawardena said.
Bopage has come under heavy criticism since he took office in April, after he issued a statement without approval from the subject minister, demanding the country’s media to not give publicity to the joint opposition, and also warning that giving the joint opposition can lead to be media being legally viable. The government was quick to reject the statement, saying it was Bopage’s personal opinion, and Bopage received an earful from the Prime Minister following the incident.
