More DPL Bonanzas For Gota’s LA Buddies As President’s Office Warns Citizens Against Questioning Appointments

Another one of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s buddies from Los Angeles, California will be the recipient of a coveted diplomatic posting at Sri Lankan state expense Colombo Telegraph learns, as the President’s Office “politely” requested citizens to stop questioning his appointments.

Sajiv Gunasekara, a real estate broker from LA has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Japan.

Gota’s LA Fam-Bam: (L-R) Sajiv Gunasekera (now Ambassador to Japan), Malraj De Silva (Now Ambassador to UAE), Upul Dharmadasa (now CAA Chairman), Raja Edirisuriya (now UDA Chairman), Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Munir Akbar at the annual Pasadena Sri Lanka day celebration in July 2016

Gunasekera has no qualifications to be the Sri Lankan Envoy in Tokyo, an important capital from the perspective of Sri Lankan foreign relations because Japan remains one of the country’s biggest concessional lenders. His sole qualification, sources told Colombo Telegraph was that he was a close friend of the former American citizen who was elected President of Sri Lanka in 2019. Gunasekera has lived in the United States since 1984, ever since he left school. He owns the LA-based real estate company, Sunland Developers.

Gunasekera’s appointment follows a pattern for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who has reserved top government positions for cronies from his former homeland. Earlier this year Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed Malraj De Silva another of his buddies from LA as Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. During a visit to California in April 2019 Gotabaya and Ioma Rajapaksa stayed with Malraj De Silva in his sprawling Pasadena home. The video of the now President of Sri Lanka sharing a sing-song with his LA buddies that emerged in April 2019 was filmed in Malraj De Silva’s home. The last time the Rajapaksa administration was in power Malraj De Silva served as Consul General to Sri Lanka in LA and was accused of fraud and misappropriation of Sri Lankan state funds during his tenure. The FCID investigated Malraj De Silva for renting out a palatial residence in LA while serving as Consul General at a whopping USD 8000 per month. De Silva never provided a statement to FCID officials about the charge. It was claimed that Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s son Manoj Rajapaksa resided at the luxury house while he completed his higher studies. Two military personnel had been assigned to him for security, while water, electricity and other utility expenses were borne by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, documents of payments made during the time revealed.

But the hand-outs to Gota’s LA crew have continued even as the President’s avowed “meritocracy” crumbled in the first few months of his presidency. In an extremely unusual twist, Upul Dharmadasa, known to be Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s travel agent and friend in LA was appointed Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority after the former American citizen took office as Sri Lanka’s President. Another LA crony Raja Edirisuriya (also featured in the 2016 photograph attached to this article) was appointed UDA Chairman by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in January 2020.

The revelations about Gunasekera’s appointment comes as the President’s Office attempted to issue a gag order on citizens regarding the Government’s high post appointments.

The gag order follows outrage from nationalist groups nurtured by the President over the appointment of Milinda Moragoda as Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to New Delhi with a hitherto unheard of “cabinet rank”. Sri Lanka has no tradition of awarding cabinet rank to any persons other than members of parliament as stipulated in the constitution. But Moragoda’s role in the Norwegian backed 2001-2003 peace process and his former NGO credentials sparked nationalist outrage about the appointment. Documents have also surfaced sourced to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that during the peace process, Moragoda had been given funding to the tune of Rs 154 million from the Norwegian Government, as part of the Scandinavian state’s donations to “NGOs and Journalists” in Sri Lanka. Moragoda was one of the largest recipients of the Norwegian funding on the list which included Colombo-based NGOs and high profile journalists. Issuing a press release on Thursday, Moragoda said the funds from Norway were used for de-mining work conducted by his NGO. The founder of the Path finder think-tank is also despised by nationalists aligned to Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the SLPP for his ties to the United States as revealed through multiple wikileaks cables. In 2007 Committee on Public Enterprises released a report accusing Moragoda of alleged fraud while he was Minister of Economic Reform when was part of the UNP Government. The COPE report claimed that Mercantile Credit, a subsidiary of Mercantile Merchant Bank of which Moragoda was founded had defaulted on loans to the tune of Rs 4.7 billion after the monies had been obtained by providing false information. The investigations launched by COPE never went further after Moragoda joined the UPFA Government in 2007.

Moragoda’s appointment comes in the wake of the former Justice Minister’s understudy at the Pathfinder Institute, Admiral Jayantha Colombage taking office as the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after former Secretary Ravinatha Aryasinha was unceremoniously booted out following the August general election.

The press release issued by the President’s office says; “Pressure is being mounted against certain appointments recently made by the President and the Government. All these appointments were made with the utmost consideration of our country’s sovereignty, national security and implementation of “Saubhagyaye Dekma” policy statement. Also, President emphasizes such appointments have been made after careful scrutiny of loyalty to the nation, qualifications and background of these individuals so that policies of the Government can move forward in a successful manner.

President stresses that he has no intention of changing such appointments made after deep thinking or to replace them with different persons in the face of pressure.

As such, President politely requests everyone not to pressure him or the Government to change these appointments.

President is of the view that expressing opinions against these appointments will not only make the appointees unable to carry out their duties and responsibilities properly, but also will weaken the Government’s process by underestimating them in the society.”

Foreign Secretary Jayantha Colombage in recent media interviews expressed the President’s desire to appoint the ‘best Foreign Service officers’ to the Asia region. It is ironic that Colombage’s Ministry has now appointed a real-estate dealer from Los Angeles as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Tokyo. Ahmed A. Jawad the current Additional secretary at the Foreign Ministry was previously appointed as Ambassador to Tokyo. He is one of the most senior Foreign Service officers having served as Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Norway and Saudi Arabia and more recently as the High Commissioner to Canada. He has extensive experience in diplomacy and multilateral affairs. Jaward’s appointment has now been cancelled in order to make way for Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s realtor friend from LA, Sajiv Gunasekara.

Colombo Telegraph awaits details on the citizenship status of Sajiv Gunasekara who has for at least 36 years lived in the USA. (Chinthika De Silva)

As things are, is it necessary to have a Parliament, Prime Minister, and a Cabinet of Ministers. Instead, why can’t the president have some direct employees under him numbering about 150, at half the cost, so that nobody will question his activities.

      Are you a groveller, Pasqual?

Don’t you understand that people elect governments to manage things for the people and be accountable to the people and then be kicked out by the people when they fail to deliver?

You seem to be taking the view that once elected, governments can screw the people for the duration?

There’s lots of synonyms for the kind of attitude you espouse – some of them are “cower”, “cringe” and “quail”.

The great king Buwanekabahu III also appointed ambassadors with no formal qualifications or diplomas in diplomacy. Sri Lanka became the rice bowl of the East. Now, SL has the begging bowl to the East and appropriate personnel must be appointed as reported here. It will help to make Sri Lanka great again, I’m sure.

In this world, nobody is infallible, not even the high and mighty that we elected. I keep on repeatedly saying that the choice that we had during the Presidential election was essentially two sides of the same coin. Both are now saying “Shut up! I know what is right!”. Now that is the first sign of autocracy leading to “auto-crazy”. The appointments of MM and JC has an ironic twist. In pathfinder, MM was JC’s boss, now the roles reversed. The million-dollar question is whether these people effectively ward off pressures from super-powers simply because Sri Lanka is strategically located? (Anybody and everybody is a racketeer) Up to now none have shown courage ward off heavy pressure in the recent past, the last one being Axcellency Percy Mahendra Rajapakse got down Foreign Ministers of UK and France to his Medamulana lair, made them to drink King Coconut just after a pluck and asked them to go to hell in the polite Medamulana style. Years before, it was Prez R Premadasa who kicked out the UK High Commissioner out of the country. The reality is the so-called experts in the balancing act cannot balance. They are good collectors.

Are they worse than Yahapalanaya appointees ?

Smooth talking confidence trickster Arjuna Mahendran in charge of our Central Bank ?( he and RW committed a massive swindle there)

Sagala’s brother Kavan Ratnayake as chairman of practically every government Corporation( every corporation went down further)

Charitha Ratwatte’s brother ,a pilot ,as CEO of money haemorrhaging SriLankan ?( it bled more under rat’s rule!)

Bumped up FR lawyer Weliamuna ( whose command of the English language is hilarious) as High Commissioner to Australia .Weliamuna refused to return to Sri Lanka and now looking for refuge and a job in the glamours West ! Maybe he will teach English to Sri Lankan refugees in a Sydney night school .

Retired sub inspector Lal Wickramatunga as Deputy ambassador to Australia. Police methods in diplomacy !

80 + year old UNP hanger on Palpola, an empty mediocrity who refused to see any Sri Lankans because they were inferior !

A superficial woman lawyer Mrs Dilki Wickramasinghe to fight bribery. She ended up by telling the wheeler dealing Avonguard boss , she can make or break the law !

This is only a few samples.

So why criticise the new appointments ?

Most contributors of comments to CT (some frequently) give their side of the story (some vituperously) as seen through their own tinted spectacles tainted with personal agendas or ingrained bias. Very natural, you would say.
But is there real meaningful discussion on the subject matter itself dispassionately. Does the trading of each others base views lead to intelligent discourse.
    I truly wonder.
CT should look at this from a higher perspective and tone down some comments as now we only stagnate or go down. Let us try to go up.

The overwhelming approval by giving the mandate to the President is a reality that cannot be ignored. The President being a vegetarian and the high regards he has for the Buddhist Principles is what captured the hearts and minds of the majority of the electorate. It was also consolidated by his work ethics. The Jadapalanaya Government of MS & RW drove the country to the ground. Penthouse Ravi,
Rajitha Senaratna, Champika Ranawaka, Kirielle, the list is too long to name here, pilfered the country leaving behind an empty shell. The President must be commended for getting rid of the parasites of the government thus getting rid of the looters who cannot perform but basking in perks. Most of the unjust criticisms of the President come from those who themselves are big time pretenders.

’80 + year old UNP hanger on Palpola, an empty mediocrity who refused to see any Sri Lankans because they were inferior !’

This is incorrect. He is a highly efficient and totally incorruptible person. An extremely rare thing in Sri Lankan politics. At his insistence the embassy in Rome started taking passport applications to the provinces as Sri Lankans living there had difficulty in travelling to the Embassy in the capitol. He didn’t leave it to his staff to do this as most ambassadors would. He traveled with them despite his age to ensure that all Sri Lankans had their problems sorted out. He is probably the only Sri Lankan politician who refers to himself as “just a lawyer” when he is really a senior advocate who actually asked the Government not to make him a PC. The most humble and honest of men.

USA is the most Developed country in the world. Only those Sri Lankans who have US citizenship have the expertise to make Sri Lanka Great like the USA. We have a former US citizen as President and his younger brother, a dual citizen, as his right-hand man. The President needs some more US citizens in key positions to develop Sri Lanka and make it Great like the US. That is why he has picked the best ex Lankans known to him personally and No One should question his selections. If he needs more, he will get them. All must Shut up and wait till he achieves his Dream of making Sri Lanka great like the US in another a little over 4 years. After that he will go back to the US with his Team of US citizens.

Is it so difficult to wait for just over 4 years after wasting over 70 years with useless Sri Lankan politicians who ruined the country?

    (Already Posted somewhere else)

Mallaiyuran / September 4, 2020 – 19A’s presidential time limit and term limits are not dealt in 20A. The rest of all are practically going out. King just started. He has four years to worry about time limit and nine years to worry about term limit. The constitutional change can take care of that in time. Soon, March 2020 may bring new problems and new pressure for Lankawe Nazi’s revocation of their consent to UNHRC Resolution 30/1. Lankawe is shutting importing as well as exporting, clothing & garments to evade any pressure from GSP+ countries. For additional security, now, CJ, IGP, AG… like position cannot be fitted with some Rapist army official until 19A there. So there is an urgency in removing the 19A. That is why even 13A spared here.

I mean….we love the Rajapaksas for ending the war and uniting the country and things.
    *
We rejected UNP because the war would have dragged on with the eventual separation of the country. But now that the country is united and UNP couldn’t do anything about that, they were on the way to the India merger via landbridge.
    *
We also rejected UNP also because they were Ultra-American-Capitalist.
    *
But Rajapaksas : Sigh……They are Ultra-Ultra-Ultra American Capitalistic.
    *
So UUUAC in fact that Gota even sees Sinharaja forest as a potential money-making machine for the UUUAC machine.
    *
We were hoping that they would be guardians of our Ancient Realm- Buddhism, Forestry, Fishery, Ecology, Biodiversity, Traditions, Cultures, Green Post-Modernistic Movement (US cannot be these; they can only be UUUAC….no other way for them….but nobody is forcing Motherland to become UUUAC).
    *
At least they could’ve left Sinharaja alone and relocated the recent forest dwellers/squatters who want to enjoy the forest lifestyle and demand facilities from the government. (Ancient forest dwellers are the Veddas…guardians of the forest…….unless these are Veddas turned modern- in that case they should be relocated). No, it was cheaper to build the road so UUUAC would not be wasted on poor people.
