Muslims Should Reject SLMC & Its Offshoots Wholesale

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

The creation of the SLMC as a political party based solely on religion was a historic blunder, which if not rectified soon, will drag the Muslim community into political abyss. The foundational philosophers of SLMC were deluded by a misguided vision about the Indian Muslim League model. The tragic consequences that Muslims of India had to face and are still facing as a result of this ethno-religious model somehow or other missed the attention of the SLMC founders. A critical study of the birth and growth of SLMC is a tempting field for research.

In Sri Lanka, the demographic, linguistic and economic characteristics that had shaped Muslim settlements, and the fact that in the 1980s when the idea of a Muslim party was conceptualised ethno-nationalism was already ripping the country apart, were assumed to be irrelevant as long as Muslims could unite under a religious banner and fight for their so called ‘rights’. Up to now no one from the SLMC has enlightened the public what those unique rights are. The slogan “Allahu Akbar” and nothing about national unity or nation’s welfare decorated SLMC rallies and Muslim voters were hallucinated with Marx’s opiate so that they could forget their mundane problems and elect megalomaniac leaders, who had nothing but self-interest in their heart to promote.

Rauff HakeemWhat the ethno-religious politics of SLMC has achieved so far were, firstly, to devalue the ‘politics of pragmatism’ which the pre-SLMC Muslim generation so successfully institutionalised by joining one or the other of the then existing national parties; secondly, to worsen the already deteriorating ethnic tensions in the country and making the Muslim community (like the Tamils under the LTTE) to lose even the little it had gained in the earlier era; thirdly, to reward incompetency, corruption and dishonesty at the expense of talent, truthfulness and dedication; and finally, to damage immeasurably the positive image that the Muslim community had cultivated over a millennium particularly amongst the majority Buddhist Sinhalese. Will the SLMC provide a record of their achievements that benefited the community, let alone the nation? Have the leaders of this party made any contribution on behalf the Muslim community to the national debate on the country’s economy, security and development? All that they have done is to bargain with their coalition partners for ministerial positions and personal wealth.

The issues confronting the community are too many to enumerate. For example, there is a landless Muslim peasantry in the East whose lands have been taken away by government administrators under false pretensions; there are impoverished villages in the Central Highlands whose little economy has suffered irreparably under neo-liberal economic policies; there are refugees in the North and North West who are the innocent victims of a reckless civil war and who need resettlement; and, there are the unemployment and homeless Muslims in the cities, who out of desperation are falling victims to predatory anti-social elements. A number of these issues are no doubt common to all communities and they have to be tackled not on a communal but national basis. That needs a leadership that can rise above petty ethno-nationalism and win recognition by all communities. Which one of the SLMC leaders has this quality and the capacity to address the nation at large and win the support of the majority to seek solution to Muslim problems?

In a plural democracy it is through the national parties and not through sectarianism that minorities can find salvation. Whatever that the Muslims have achieved so far are the result of a farsighted generation of Muslim leadership that realised the futility of ethno-nationalism, joined hands with national leaders and persuaded the majority community that Muslims are positive contributors to national wealth and they needed national support. The pre-SLMC history of Sri Lanka will vouch for this fact. It was the success of that politics which partly prompted the late President Jayawardena to change the constitution of the country from the Westminster model to the current hybrid Gaullist model. The creation of the SLMC was the wrong move to counter JR’s master stroke.

It is time the Muslim community realises the heavy price it has already paid for putting their trust on SLMC. Once before I called for the dissolution of SLMC, but that won’t happen as long as its leaders see the personal benefits they could reap from of its existence. The Muslim voters at the next election however, can reject that party and its offshoots wholesale and revert to politics of pragmatism. A Sinhalese or Tamil politician elected to the legislature with massive Muslim support will be more responsive to Muslim demands than one from the SLMC mafia or its offshoot. The community deserves a better leadership.

The performance of Muslim Political Parties since 1989 is summarized below.

    1989 General Elections
SLMC won a little over 32% of the estimated number of Muslim Votes in 13 districts.
SLMC garnered a little under 50% of the estimated number of Muslim Votes in the Eastern Province. This suggests that even at that time, 1 in 2 Muslim Adults in the EP did not favour a Muslim Political Party.

    1994 General Elections
SLMC continued to garner a little under 50% of the estimated number of Muslim Votes in the Eastern Province.

    2004 General Elections
SLMC won about 66% of the estimated number of Muslim Votes in the Eastern Province. Does this indicate an increase in popularity or reflect the sympathy votes after Mr Ashraff’s tragic demise in 2000?

    2012 Eastern Provincial Council Elections
Only an estimated 37% of Muslim Voters cast their votes in favour of the SLMC. This would mean that at this point in time around 2 in every 3 Muslim Voters in the heartland of the SLMC favored a National Political Party (UNP/SLFP) or did not cast their votes at a National Election.

    2014 Western Provincial Council Elections
All the Muslim Parties that contested, collectively accounted for only an estimated 17% of Muslim votes. Five years previously, in 2009, the corresponding level of support was 18%. The number of Muslim Voters had increased by nearly 6%, but the SLMC were able to increase their Voter base by a mere 127 votes in 2014. This suggests that even at the height of anti-Muslim agitations, 5 out of every 6 Muslim Adults in the Western Province did not deem it fit to vote for a Muslim Political Party.

    2014 Uva Provincial Council Elections
The final nail in the coffin was the performance of these Muslim Parties at the Uva Provincial Council Elections in 2014 for which all the Muslim Parties had decided to join forces and contest under one umbrella Party for maximum results. At the end of the day, out of an estimated 40,000 Muslim Voters , only 5045 voted for this grand coalition of Muslim Parties. This meant that about 7 out of every 8 Muslim Voters in this region had rejected the Muslim Parties at a time when the activities of the anti-Muslim groups were at a peak.

The claim that Muslim Political Parties ‘represent’ the Muslim Community is clearly a fallacy of the highest order perpetuated by self-serving Muslim Politicians.

Hope that the Supreme Command of SLMC would take a note of your analysis and decide to disband. That will isolate Rishard Bathiyudeen’s extremist Muslim Party and send it to Vanni jungles.

Sri Lankan voters should be EDUCATED to reject corrupt politicians who only talk about their own ethic and religious group, and/or spread hatred against other communities..
Muslims are as bad as the rest..

Sinhala, Muslim and Tamil chauvinism and Ethnic outbidding during elections season is one of the problems of democracy. Politicians fan the flames of ethnic and religious hatred to win votes and distract the moda masses from their (politicians) corruption and criminal records is as old as the hills.. Now that we are in election season, ethnic outbidding by various political parties and opportunistic politicians is reaching a height with JVP rejecting TNA’s demand for merged northeast and federal structure to win votes of the Tamil masses that TNA otherwise ignores.. Meanwhile, Mahinda Jarapassa with the BBS is running the SInhala Buddhist nationalism vote-for-me-to-save-Sinhala-culture side show with a distorted national flag..Both TNA and SLFP are opportunists.. talking stupid masses for a good ride. Civil Society must grasp the bull by the horns and EDUCATE the moda Sinhala and Tamil masses on the fact that they should not be fooled by ethnic entrepreneur politicians who promise to “save culture and nation” while spreading ethno-religious hatred in order to win votes. Civil society must challenge JVP’s Anura Kumara to explain to the masses that the demand of the TNA for a Federal State is because of the failure of the Mahinda Jarapassa regime and the UNP to bring GENUINE peace and reconciliation and EQUALITY to the Tamil people and the country after LTTE was defeated… The root issue is equality for all.

      Dr. Ameer Ali,

RE: Muslims Should Reject SLMC & Its Offshoots Wholesale

“The creation of the SLMC as a political party based solely on religion was a historic blunder, which if not rectified soon, will drag the Muslim community into political abyss. “

One needs to look into the historical background that caused the formation of SLMC. The main reason was the marginalization of the Muslim Community by the major parties especially the marginalization of the Tamils Community and the discrimination against Tamils, that affected Muslims as well, especially the Muslims in the eastern and northern Provinces, who mother tongue and medium of instruction was Tamil.

The question to ask are these discriminatory factors still there or steps taken to address these issues?

Before 1981, Muslims voted for UNP,SLFP and the Left parties. They took the Muslims for granted and even the left parties joined the Sinhala Buddhist Nationalists, and marginalized the non-Sinhala Buddhists. That is the root cause. However, the fact remains that the overwhelming majority of the Sri Lankan Muslims want a Unitary state and like to live with dignity with the other citizens, without discrimination.

This is a citizenship right, given in the UN Charter of Human Rights and granted by the Sri Lanka constitution. We all have seen how these were applied to Tamils and Muslims, in the recent past.

Majority Muslims in Sri Lanka are a sad pathetic lot. They speak Tamil in a sinhala dominated country. If they have used their brains and studied Sinhala they could have integrated better into the larger society. Now they are powerless and and used by SLMC and such jokers to meet their personal ends. It is a sad pathetic situation. I dont think the muslim society is intelligent enough to get out of it.

      Patriot,

If Tamils (Muslims included) learnt Singhalese and Singhalese learnt Tamil, we would have a fully integrated society today.
I blame SWRD and the Singhalese politicians following him for this mess.

This is because contrary to popular belief and myth the Sri Lankan Muslims( excluding the Malays) are descended from Tamil Muslim immigrants from India. The vast majority of them migrated to the island from what is modern day Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Even the small minority who had lived here prior to this large scale Tamil Muslim immigration from South India, have very little Arab blood. Only a very distant Arab ancestor and all the rest Tamils. Only a few Arabs traders came to the island to intermarry and convert the locals to Islam. When they arrived the coastal population was Tamil and not Sinhalese. Their descendants may now be calling themselves Sinhalese Buddhists or Catholics.
Even the Arabs classify the Sri Lankan Muslims as converted South Asian Hindus and not of Arab descent.

It is painful but I agree that a majority of Muslims are a pathetic lot. For us to integrate, Sinhala language schools must give preference to school admissions to Muslims. There are a lot of discrimination when it comes to school admission for Muslims even after meeting all documentary requirements. My son was a victim of such an admission discrimination. The government must mandate that all Sinhala schools must give preference to Tamil language speaking children and that will be a good start to integrate minority communities. I wish it could be made possible through some legislation like how children of military personnel were given preference to their choice of school. Would this be possible? I wish it could be but I am sorry to me it would be a distant dream.

It also painful to see the Sri Lankan Muslims denying their actual Tamil origin and pathetically claiming an Arab origin that only a small microscopic minority of them partly have. Trying to discard their original Tamil customs, names, way of life. pathetically wearing the Salafist Wahhabi Arab dress, taking Arab names and undermining the Tamils, their language to gain some pathetic advantages does not hide the truth. Go and look at your selves in the mirror. Even the Arabs do not recognise the claims of the Sri Lankan Muslims as of Arab descent/heritage but correctly classify them as converted South Indian/Asian Hindus. Sri Lankan Muslims undermining and backstabbing their Hindu and Christian Tamil brothers and sisters in one of the major causes for the present day problem. They do not want to do anything but curry favour the Sinhalese and when Tamils and fight and demand their rights, want to come to the table for the piece of the pie.

Quite a number of Muslim Congress Leaders are capable and holds the capacity to serve the nation – at the National level, thus can become National Leaders rather than confining to echo one smaller community. This is an ultimate fact when compared with present day Tamil leaders, which is not has been really tested since 1956 and Muslim Congress as a party wasting its’ community resources and talents!

Thank you for your excellent analysis Dr. Ameer Ali. As a Sinhalese who had his upbringing in a middle and upper class Muslim neighbourhood in Galle I see a few more factors behind this polarization of Muslims on ethno-religious lines:

First, the Swabhasha education policy segregated the Sinhala upper and middle classes from those classes of the Muslims. While English had brought them together the swabhasha created polarization under Sinhala and Tamil streams.
Second, the emergence of the middle-eastern countries as a major money power in the world and the resulting fundamentalism which they spread in the other parts of the world has contributed to this. It was further strengthened by the returning migrant Muslim workers who were influenced by the fundamentalist religio-cultural practices of the middle-eastern countries. For instance, Sri Lankan Muslim women who considered Sari as their national dress together with Sinhala and Tamil women almost completely dropped it within a relatively very short period of time and took to the middle-eastern Abaya which could be the most unsuitable to highly humid and hot conditions in Sri Lanka. Another, example is the failure of many local Muslims to identify themselves with their own country. Sri Lankan Muslims supporting the Pakistan cricket team is one such ridiculous practice.

Third, Muslims were the most ‘naturally selected’ to benefit from the newly liberalized economy. While the Sinhalese have never been a business community in their history the Tamil businesses were wiped out by the racist elements during a series of riots culminated in 1983. This created a sizeable ‘new rich’ class among the Muslims who lacked the values, class and the sophistication of the ‘old rich’ whose refinement process had taken at least through several generations. The new rich were arrogant and followed the arrogant politics of the SLMC. Their awareness on how the old rich had diplomatically handled the national politics was limited. Instead, they provoked the Sinhala racist elements and the business community which were waiting to attack Muslim businesses.

Fourth, SLMC never told the Muslims the fact that they were the most tri-lingual among all three main communities of the country and how this distinctive strength of the Muslims could be used for their benefit through leadership, harmony and integration. Instead, it followed a conflict model.

Fifth, Muslims have lost the genuine leaders of the caliber of Razik Fareed, Azeez and Bakeer Markar etc. who promoted mainstreaming rather than polarization.

Sinhala Man – Dr. Ameer Ali

Thank you, Sinhala Man, well summarized.

      1. “For instance, Sri Lankan Muslim women who considered Sari as their national dress together with Sinhala and Tamil women almost completely dropped it within a relatively very short period of time and took to the middle-eastern Abaya which could be the most unsuitable to highly humid and hot conditions in Sri Lanka. Another, example is the failure of many local Muslims to identify themselves with their own country. Sri Lankan Muslims supporting the Pakistan cricket team is one such ridiculous practice. “

“Fifth, Muslims have lost the genuine leaders of the caliber of Razik Fareed, Azeez and Bakeer Markar etc. who promoted mainstreaming rather than polarization.”

In short, the Sri Lankan Muslims became Idiots following Wahhabis and their Wahhabi traditions that are Iblisic or Satanic.

They followed the Iblis, Satan, Shaitan and devilish traditions of the Wahhabis and their clones, and not required in Islam.

The Muslims became stupider and stupider…

They want to get back to the days of Ignorance, Jahaliah, which Prophet Mohamed fought against. Wahhabism is Arab racism and Arab Casteism, wrapped in the Iblis, the Satan, the Devil. They are innovating and twisting Islam based on instructions from Ibis, Satan.

Wahhabis, Salafis and their clones are truly the followers of Iblis, Satan, Shaitan, Devil and the Sri Lankan Muslims and many other Muslims are misled and confused.

To begin with, Wahhabis, the ISIS, “I” is Not Islamic. It is actually Iblisic. Iblis is the Satan, Shaitan, Devil, Lucifer, Mara who is against God and Good. Iblis is the same Satan in Heaven who fooled Adam and Eve in Heaven, and now fooling people in Najd, the Wahhabis and their clones, the new Trojan Horse, or rather the Iblis Horse.

Muslims should take one step further, and call a Spade, a Spade, call ISIS, Iblis, Satan and Devil.

It is now appropriate for all minorities ie, Tamils and Muslims to join the main political parties and work closely with the Sinhalese.
The so called racially based political parties would never like to see these communities integrated as their existance is at stake.
The major parties should change their attitude towards these minorities and get them to play major roles in their parties and eventually when they form the government.

This is one step forward to eradicate racism and get all integrated.

Ethnic based political parties are a result of third grade and poor quality governance and decision making by consecutive ruling governments in a country. Since independence, this island has been reeked with ethnic violence mainly by the majority race on innocent minorities. Has any of these governments shown concern and arrested those perpetrators and punished them for such crimes? Absolutely none. In many of these instances, the State apparatus has directly or indirectly or tacitly participated in such activities. In such an environment, it is obvious that majority of the minority race who have faced activities of harassment from the majority will be looking out for a leadership that will “look after” their security, concerns and future. The past ruling governments consisting of the Majority race have given two pence for reconciliation and concerns of the minorities and vise versa these same minorities have lost faith and trust in a government that is more idealistic towards their own community and even covering up for their criminal acts if injustice. Thus the birth of ethnic based political parties such as TULF, SLMC, TNA and so on. In Sri Lanka, this goes one more step with the advent of LTTE who were a group bent on teaching the majority a lesson based on crime for crime. Whether the majority race and their leaders who are in power have learnt from these happenings is a different issue. Regarding the SLMC and their politicians, it is no doubt that all these politicians of Sri Lanka are more self serving than doing anything useful for community. It is due to the ignorance of voters that such politicians get elected to such positions over and over again. However, it needs to be said, after the Aluthgama incident on Muslims, credit needs to go to the Muslim politicians of the Muslim Political Parties and NGO’s for informing the international community of that happening thus bringing enormous pressure on the Majority Government. This could have never happened if these Muslim civilians were to trust any of the Majority Sinhalese Political parties. Today, even Rajapakse, rather belatedly and shamelessly states that he will investigate the Aluthgama incident and punish the perpetrators if he becomes PM, which he never did during his governance. Can ever the Muslim community trust a rascal such as Mahinda Rajapakse to deliver? Obviously no, because he probably was a direct supporter or at least a tacit supporter of that incident when he failed to issue orders to the Security Forces to stop the nonsense within few hours, it went on for days though, despite his brother being the Defense Secretary. We also know this same Defense Secretaries connections with extreme Sinhalese groups, even to the extent of providing them MoD security vehicles and safe passage. Therefore, the evolution of ethnic based political parties is part and parcel of ground based realities and not what Mr. Ameer Ali personifies.

Well said Spark. This guy Ameer Ali does not live in SL and he thinks that SL politics is akin to politics in his adopted country. We all know what it is like to have no one speak for us when we were reeling under the attacks by BBS goons. Further, the majority community cannot be trusted to accommodate minority representation when it comes to jobs in government departments, fair representation in national sports, recuitment to police and armed forces, even after having our own Muslim party representation. Our minority communities would have been even worse off had we had no party representation at all. Muslim ministers in all of the major parties have to toe the party line or step out, when calamities strike their community. Having a Muslim party representation is quite different, since they can bring enough pressure en-block to do something to stall the ensuing crisis. There are various ways this could be done, and they did it quite effectively by exposing the scandal to the international community, which brought pressure on the government to do something about it. Being independent and having our own party representation is much better and safer than integration into the major political parties, only because of parties like BBS, JHU, RB and SU who are a danger to minority communities in this country.

    You say:

“A critical study of the birth and growth of SLMC is a tempting field for research.” Please do. Ability to be self-seeking with personal bias and varnished truth will enlighten the un-initiated like me.

For your information, the Indian Muslim League was never a model when it was decided to form SLMC. It started as a social organisation in early 80’s, and was transformed into a political organisation much later. When it was sought to be registered as a political party, back then the requirements that needed to be fulfilled were very stringent compared to those that apply currently. Ashroff used the identity and official records of a party, Islamic United Front, which preceded SLMC in 1950’s but was not actively mobilized thereafter, to seek registration of SLMC as a revived political party. He succeeded. There was no consideration of it being modelled on any party or organization elsewhere, although the slogans used were common to most such organizations.

The rest of the article, there is no need to substantively comment on, because it follows upon this flawed basis encapsulated in its opening paragraphs. I am one, who would like Muslims to join Island-wide parties. I do not want to say they should join major parties or national parties since a party being ‘major’ does not mean automatically that it takes care of , leave aside represents, the interests of smaller communities, or a party being ‘national’ does not imply an inclusivity of character in Sri Lanka.

An equally important question that begs the answer is how it would be possible for smaller communities to be tempted into forming their own ethnic or religious-based parties if major or national parties were what they were meant to be. This is one of the serious gaps in Ameer Ali’s several articles. This persistent gap is where the truth and honesty expected of an academic/ intellectual is buried. A critical study of the ‘dead’ buried should as well be a tempting field for research. Will Ameer Ali do this exhumation?

Although I do not agree with Dr Ameer Ali in his arguments about Identity issues in Sri Lanka. He got a lot of controversial opinions about Islamic issues. He is western made Islamic scholar. His thoughts are influenced and shaped with western scholarship on Islam. His reading into Islamic texts lack profound understanding . yet, on this issue of SLMC I should agree with him but it is a partial agreements.

I would argue that Muslim congress or any other Muslim parties should work under one umbrella name . They all should work in North and east to demand Muslim right in N&E.Muslim political party is viable only in N&E. In south Muslims should work with UNP and SLFP or With JVP. Muslims should not have their own political parties.

in Politics what matters most in SL is to get people jobs done, right protected. justice maintained, equality guaranteed.
RISHARD, Badiudeed, R.Hakeem and all small parties destroy Muslim vote bank.
No one will get any enough east with this division. Muslims never learn lesson from past history of election .

Look into the 4 points raised by Amarasiri in support if the Wahhabis and their clones being Iblis, Satan, Shaitan and, Devil Followers.

Do you have any evidence to rebut the above assertion from the Quran, Hadith and other sources?

The rift between the Tamil community and the Muslim community in the East widened greatly with the advent of SLMC in the East.

As rightly pointed out here by Dr Ameer Ali, before SLMC came into the scene, Muslims elected as their MPs those Muslim leaders who belonged to the UNP or to the SLFP. Past Muslim leaders from these two major national parties did not polarize the Muslims. Some of them did yeoman service to the Muslim community. One example is the former Education Miniter Badiudeen Mahmud who did great service to Muslim education.

Ashraff formed the SLMC because he wanted to be the undisputed leader of the Eastern Muslims. He started speaking against the Tamils because probably he thought that was one sure way of rallying the Eastern Muslims behind him. The actions of LTTE members against the Muslims further fuelled the hatred of Eastern Muslims against the Tamils. Ashraff was personally a good fellow with good manners and he had many Tamil friends unlike this foul mouthed thug Rishad Bathudeen of Mannar who has now become the darling of the North East Muslims. Ashraff came from a decent family.

Advice given here by Dr Ameer Ali applies to the Tamils as well. In the same way the creation of SLMC as a political party based solely on religion was a historic blunder, the creation of separate Tamil parties for the Tamils is a blunder that had caused the Tamils all the miseries of the past sixty odd years.

It would be ideal if the Muslims and Tamils disbanded their parties based on religion and race and join national parties. But, unfortunately this is not possible now because the two main national parties UNP and SLFP have themselves given pride of place only to the Sinhala Buddhists. Same is the story of JVP. There is no ideal national party that the Muslims and Tamils could embrace. Yes, at one time we had the LSSP and CP as parties at the national level which embraced the Tamils and stood for parity of the two languages. Unfortunately, the advent of Sinhala racism drowned out these two leftist parties. Having been marginalised by the turn of events in the Sinhala politics, these two leftist parties dropped their policy on language parity and became appendages to SLFP. That was the sad history or I may even call it the end of the leftist movement in Sri Lanka. JVP, the present day leftists of Sri Lanka, is an out and out Sinhala racist party.

The Evicted and Displaced North Muslims of Sri Lanka. The expulsion of the Muslims and other nations from the Northern province was an act of ethnic cleansing carried out by the Tamil militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) organization in October 1990. In order to achieve their goal of creating a mono ethnic Tamil state in the North Sri Lanka, the LTTE forcibly expelled the 72,000 strong Muslim population from the Northern Province.

The Hadith of Najd is a famous hadith with several chains of narration about three geographical locations. While all Sunni Muslims accept the group of hadith as authentic, the exact location of the area referred to as “Najd” is disputed.

Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.

Imam Ahmed al Sawi (Rahimuhullah) in his magnificent commentary over Tafsir al Jalalyn by Imam Jalal ud din Suyuti (rah) explains this verse : Truly, the Devil is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy: he only calls his party to become of the inhabitants of the blaze” (Qur’an 35:6) as:

Translation: It is said this verse was revealed about the Kharijites [foretelling their appearance], who altered the interpretation of the Qur’an and Sunnah, on the strength of which they declared it lawful to kill and take the property of Muslims—as may now be seen in their modern counterparts; namely, a sect in the Hijaz called “Wahabiya, (فرقة بأرض الحجاز يقال لهم الوهابية)” who “think they are on something, truly they are the liars (Kadhibeen).

Satan has gained mastery over them and made them forget Allah’s remembrance. Those are Satan’s party, truly Satan’s party, they are the losers” (Qur’an 58:18–19). We ask Allah Most Generous to extirpate them completely [Hashiya al-Sawi ‘ala al-Jalalayn, 3.255]

I was a UNP supporter from the time I could vote. If I felt that it was useless supporting even the UNP then I would destroy my vote but I never voted for SLMC being a Muslim. But 3 elections back I voted for UPFA (I think it was provincial council elections) only because of MR as I felt he was doing a good Job.

Then the anti-Muslim hate campaign started and it seemed that the UPFA government was actively supporting it. Then in a subsequent election I decided to vote for SLMC as I thought we needed muslims in parliament to democratically raise the issue of the anti-muslim pogrom.

It seemed that MR and the UPFA government had left Muslims in the wild and hence in the last presidential election I voted for MS.

This is to explain that as a muslim I do not believe in racist or communal politics. As a Sri Lankan I believe what we need in the parliament are people who know economics, management, finance etc who can manage the country properly rather than lawyers, racist and communalist.
