It was on a day in the first week of July in 1980. I boarded the early morning Jaffna bound train at Fort Railway Station, Colombo, reserved a seat for my friend Mr. H.N. Fernando, then President of Ceylon Teachers’ Union, the most powerful teachers’ union in the island at that time. He had promised to accompany me to Jaffna as it was my first ever visit to the North and my purpose of the visit was to meet with the teacher–trainees in the Palali Teacher Training College .
The days were turbulent. The country was witnessing protest campaigns of the employees of government sector as well as of the private sector against the JR government’s economic policies. Some railway employees had been sacked and a trade unionist named Somapala had been killed by some pro government goons in front of his office in Fort,Colombo while he was leading a protest campaign during the lunch hour. Anti –government trade unions were holding discussions to launch a General Strike.
I waited and waited for H.N. but he did not turn up leaving me with no any other alternative but to continue my journey. I was a little bit scared to travel to the North alone as there had been sporadic anti Sinhala violence in the North in the previous year which, no doubt, was tit for tat .

At that time the only person I knew in the whole Jaffna Peninsula was Mr. and comrade T. Devarajah, the Jaffna District Secretary of Ceylon Teachers’ Union. We had met each other a few times in Colombo when we visited the Union office to take part in the Central Committee meetings. I did not know where his house was but I knew the postal address of his school, Mallakam Hindu College, Mallakam. My plan was to visit his school and get his home address from somebody. Yet I did not know how to get to Mallakam.
I struck up a conversation with a Tamil gentleman seated in the front seat. He gave me the necessary guidelines to get to Mallakam which was an indescribable relief to me. It was past noon when I got off the train at Jaffna from where I got a bus to Jaffna town. At the Jaffna bus station I was guided to a Kankasanthuri bus by a Tamil who could speak a little English. A passenger promised me to show where I have to get down to get to Mallakam Hindu College.
After forty five minutes or so I reached Mallakam. In five minutes I was in front of the school. Alas! The school gate was locked with a big iron chain and a padlock .There was not a single soul in the school premises to be seen. It was only then I remembered that it was a Sunday.
Now I was completely stranded in an unknown territory. To make the situation worse I knew no Tamil language barring three Tamil words Vanga, Ponga and a filthy word. The only option I had to choose was to start the return journey.
Fortunately a chap came to me and said something in Tamil. I told him in English why I came to school. To make the long story short he took me to the house of school principal which was 200 or so metres away.
He gave me the directions to get to Devarajah’s house situated at Inuvil on KKS road. Now I had to travel for a few miles back to get to Inuvil. Within 45 minutes I was able get to his home but he was not home as he had gone to water his red onion cultivation.
His wife welcomed me warmly and served me with refreshments though it was the first time she saw me.
Half an hour or so later Deva returned home and immediately invited me for lunch which had been prepared for me and H.N. In the evening he took me on his bike round the village and invited me to have some Palmirah toddy which I declined as I was a dedicated JVPer at that time. Now I repent for not accepting his invitation.
Until the dinner time we discussed politics and trade union activities. Deva believed in socialism and was sympathetic to the JVP.
In the early morning on the following day H.N. Fernando arrived at Deva’s home having travelled to Jaffna in the Night Mail train. We all left for Palali Teacher training College soon after the breakfast.
The road to the Teacher Training College lay in front of the Palali Army camp. I very well remember that there was only one sentry in front of the camp. He was the only soldier I saw during the two days I spent in Jaffna. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that the Jaffna peninsula would become a battle field in a few years time.
We were welcomed by the principal of the training college who, according to H.N., had been a member of Ceylon Teachers’ Union. He immediately arranged a meeting of class leaders of the trainees where we made speeches on the issues related to teacher trainees, teachers and education. At the end of the speeches we held a discussion together .
We left the College after the lunch offered by the principal. Deva went home and we went to the Kankasanthurei Railway Station to get to Colombo by night train.
Our teachers’ union joined hands with hundreds of other trade unions and launched the July General Strike from 17th July to 21st July demanding 300 rupee monthly salary increase. Devarajah led the strike in schools in Jaffna. JR and his Cabinet of Ministers were not willing to meet the demands of the strikers .The government sacked all the strikers. The trade Union movement in the country was not strong enough to face JR’s iron rule. Yet they continued a campaign demanding to reinstate all the sacked workers .
Devarajah who lost his job was not able to feed his family as the income from his cultivation was inadequate. That was the fate of almost all the strikers. Some started farming. Some started small scale businesses. Devaraja and some others went to Middle East countries for various jobs. I know of one lady teacher who went to Saudi Arabia and worked as a house maid there.
As a result of various campaigns conducted by trade unions and INGOs, NGOs locally and internationally JR government finally decided to reinstate the majority of strikers . As far as I remember Prime Minister R. Premadasa did not reinstate any of the strikers of the departments that came under his Ministry. Over 50 strikers committed suicide. The Ministry of Education was under Mr. Ranil Wicramasinghe and he reinstated all the teachers who had struck work. Devarajah returned to Sri Lanka when he was informed by the Union that he was going to be reinstated. Soon after assuming duties he once again started trade union activities .
Deva, a dedicated teacher, taught English in a number of schools including Kilinochchi Ramanathapuram West Government Tamil Mixed School, J/ Punkudutivu Maha Vidyalayam, J/Mallakam Maha Vidyalayam and retired from government service after serving as the Deputy Principal of Kokuvil Hindu College.
After retirement he joined Palali Teacher Training College as a part time lecturer and served there for a considerable period until he was appointed as the principal of Aston International School in Inuvil where he served for a considerable period of time.
He was a cricketer and worked so enthusiastically to promote cricket in Jaffna peninsula that he was elected as the treasurer of the Jaffna District Cricket Association.
I am penning this account because our friend and comrade Devarajah left us for good on Januaray 16th, one month ago at the age of 81 after a brief illness. Indeed it is a great loss not only for his family but also for the people of Jaffna.
Devarajah was against the LTTE. Hence it is a miracle that he lived so long because many of those who were against the LTTE were not allowed to live. May be he was not harmed because many in the area respected him. When I visited Jaffna to address the Annual Meeting of the Jaffana District Branch of Ceylon Teachers’ Union in 2004 he was not scared to criticize the LTTE before a gathering for charging the passengers an exorbitant amount who travelled from Omanthei to Muhamalei in the LTTE buses, which was a monopoly of them. Indeed, it was more than a miracle not to get killed in a war theatre where the Sri Lankan Army, The IPKF and the LTTE fought bitter battles for nearly 30 years.

It goes way beyond even that as it genuinely and sincerely crosses language and race barriers, a sentiment that the nation urgently needs, and have been needing for a long, long time. Every such little “drop in the bucket” of humanity in an environment of unrelenting revengeful racism, despite half a century of misery, is to be treasured. We can only pray for more such drops to get that bucket brimful before the nation goes through another cycle of venomous divisionary cheerleading, no matter which side.

Quite unfortunate that you would too help solidify a convenient myth and falsehood that not just the Sinhala regimes but even Tamil politicians and political aspirers find quite self-serving, and use to the hilt despite knowing the truth to the contrary. Consider your own confession that having lived all your life in a country that uses principally two languages, the most you were able to learn were just three words of Tamil, one of them filth! Truth is not necessarily always readily obvious, just because you live within arm’s length of reality!

Thank you for your article about Devarajah. You did not mention about the Principal of Palali Teacher Training College where you say you visited. He is Mr. Kanagalingam a friend of mine. I visited the College in Feb 1980.
The busses that operated from Omanthai to Muhamalai belong to Private persons. They took turn to operate in addition to old A40s and Austin and Morris cars. All private. LTTE made sure the fare was fare and prevented over charging. The vehicles ran on kerosene and spare parts were not available because of embargo. You must check information to ensure you speak the truth. I lived in Kilinochchi and travelled to Jaffna and Colombo many times a year from 1994 to 2007.
LTTE’s Education Secretariat respected teachers and ensured that teachers received training. They encouraged education staff to ensure teaching and learning continued even during multiple displacement of schools, teachers and students.

two wrongs do not make a right.Long ago a muslim gem merchent told me that people who criticise are your friends and those who praise are your enemies.I cherish those words of wisdom always.If i am praised i don’t even say thank you ,but if iam criticised i immediately have a good think about it and change course if necessary.If prabhaharan had followed that principle without killing those who criticise him and lavishing affection on those who praised him,he would not have ended in a train wreck.Same for gota too who seems to have learned his lesson after the defeat in elections in 2015 and had to go up and down to courts every day.

Thanks for this narrative. I was a trainee at GTC, Maharagama, from 1970-71, and we had sports links with Palaly Training College. I also knew HN Fernanado in his role as the secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union.

The author has expressed his thoughts on Mr Devarajah very well. As a left oriented trade union his stand against UNP is very clear. I don’t know why he touched JVP and LTTE in this article because his knowledge and understanding of the liberation struggle of LTTE and the motiveless JVP struggle. I don’t know how survived JVP brutality during their second term. He also mentioned about the in re instatement of strikers by Ranil and not by Premadasa. This suggests that there may be a political motive behind this article.

Rohana wijeweera was a racist fucker.the JVP in the south are the karawe and the LTTE in the north was karayar.Both are the same caste of the people who came from the coramandel coast.Wijeweera sought to ignore this because he had grandiose dreams that with communism the caste factor will be ditched and he can become the leader of sri lanka.now belatedly elelction after election the JVP has realised they will only get their stock votes from their won caste and suddenly have developed an affection for their long lost caste members the karayar. Belatedly they have realised that caste is unbreakable in sinhalese society and karawe will not be trusted by the govigama same as the karayar will not be trusted by the vellalas to lead them.

It is generally forgotten that H.N. Fernando had a memorable association with Jaffna. He was among the younger generation of intellectually sophisticated and articulate leftists, who faced arrest in the South when JR tried to run the country like a massive tea estate. The ceasefire in 1985 opened the prospect of his coming to Jaffna as a refugee, where he lived two or three years. His associates were up to seven years senior to me in age. One of them I came to know well is Wimal Fernando. They had fallen out with the Old Left, whom they found to be too timid.
I used to meet HN at the home of Kugamoorthy, where he also had A.J. Canagaratna, with Krishnakumar and Someswary and their children. Kugamoorthy was a live wire who helped everyone who came to him.
That was a time Jaffna appeared to many who were frustrated with JR’s regime as a place of revolutionary ferment. One of HN’s visitors asked him about the several militant groups in Jaffna. HN’s memorable answer, characteristic of his wit, was, “They are building several armies, each one like the Sri Lankan Army.” Jaffna had then gathered many refugees particularly from the communal violence in 1977 and 1983. The rise of the LTTE began the reverse flow of refugees.

My Friend In Jaffna Who Criticized The LTTE In Public
*** What a lovely story and shall I say written no doubt to remember a man who gave you linch but also to give credit to someone who was willing to critisize LTTE.
I think you have a great memory to remember some like Devaraj who died a natural death but many others died tragic deaths such as Mr.Ananthararajah head of St Johns College.
But even more importantly the deaths of ” Krishanthi” and many others who died a brutal death at the hands of barbaric sinhalese soldiers and that is what sticks in our mind.
By the way had you gone to Mallakam Hindu College on a Monady morning you might have caught a glimpse of ” Wiggy” who used to go past Mallakam Hindu college to the Magistrates Court in his white volkswagon after dropping his sister at Uduvil Girls College. I will have some news about this Thevaraj later on after I have checked with my sources

I have checked and found out the following. He may have critisized the LTTE but he was not a supporter of GOSL either. I understand as you say he comes from Inuvil and a member of NPTA but he was punished by GOSL for going on strike aganist Govrnment Policies and out of taching for 3 years. The then Principal of Mallakam Hindu Mr.Mahadevan refused to reinstate him so he joined Kokkuvil Hindu College. So him being a Critic of LTTE doesnt amount to much which is your point as any one who critises LTTE is a bit of ” THEVAMIRTHAM” in the eyes of Gotha lovers.

Frankly I find this Article hilarious. Without wishing to be too critical of both the writer and the comments let me pick some holes.
I don’t believe a word of what he says is real apart from the fact that he may have met Thevaraj some where.
One comment was he found it very touching. I wouldn’t even touch it with a barge pole.

1 We never make prior appointment with the authorities of schools or teacher training colleges We just go to a school , meet the principal and say why we are there.Then they make arrangements for us to talk to teachers.

The writer is not a lay person. He tried to pull a fast one and got caught by the French Detective . He belongs to the almighty Teachers Union and was supposed to travel with the President without any itenary and unannounced . If this is the standard of Teachers in Sri Lanka Gor help them . No overnight luggage and nowhere to stay in a Bandit Country and everyone fell for the trick. The story dosent quite add up despite damage lomotation.

people say a leopard can’t change its spots.I was thinking of the panther which is a leopard without the spots and black in colour.people are saying they have seen a panther in sri lanka and describe it as a large black cat.darwin propounded his theory of evolution based on the species that he found in galapagos islands and madagascar which said existed due to the isolated nature of these islands.
sri lanka is also an island and we srilankans will be somewhat unique compared to others in this world due to ourselves evolving features and traits that are not in the rest of the world due to our isolation for thousands of years.Though iam mistaken for a indian in western countries,i know iam not an indian,not because i was born in sri lanka,but because i just don’t feel like an indian,many of whom i have met and i don’t see any similarities in traits though we look the same.
if you believe that leopard can’t change its spots then bad gota cannot change into a good gota and maybe just wearing a mask now and an actor like ranjan ramanayaka. .However it has been proved that people can change and have changed in this world.So i believe it fits the darwins theory that due to changes in the environment in order to survive all living things adapt and change like a leopard losing its spots and becoming a panther.
