National Government To Die A Natural Death

The arrangement between the two major parties, SLFP and UNP, is set to be buried shortly, Colombo Telegraph learns from party sources.

The resounding defeat for the two parties at the hands of the newly formed Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has forced forced Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and President Maithripala Sirisena, leaders of the UNP and SLFP respectively, to chart a new course in view of the new realities pertaining to popular perception.

Wickremesinghe was reported to have been advised by confidantes within the party to go it alone, especially since they believed the election debacle was a result of the party being thwarted from implementing its economic policies.

It was reported however that President Sirisena, while not objecting to an all UNP or UNP-led group forming a government, had asked Wickremesinghe to consider stepping down in favor of someone else in the party.

Senior UNPers were not keen on the idea, claiming that if anyone should resign it should be Sirisena and not Wickremesinghe.

As things stand, the vast majority of SLFPers formerly loyal to Sirisena are set to break ranks and join former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the de-facto leader of the SLPP. A few, numbering around 7, are expected to join hands with Wickremesinghe.

Since the ‘Unity Agreement’ between the two parties elapsed on December 31, 2017 and is not going to be renewed, the Cabinet of a new government formed as outlined above, would be limited to 30 or less, in terms of the 19th Amendment.

Meanwhile there is intense lobbying at the level of the local authorities since no party obtained an absolute majority of seats in a majority of the bodies. Both the UNP and SLPP are said to be wooing those members returned from the SLFP as well as independents.

We, Sinhalese attack people only when they are steady and strong. We never attack fallen enemies. We attacked Yahapalanaya mercilessly for 3 years. True. But when they are fallen, we should be the same people who offer our own hand for them to get up.
      .
The President and the Prime Minister are not our enemies. They are our own people. They are not bad people either. They are only a lame misguided duo. Yahapalanaya is a blind-man-and-a-cripple-man government. A one of a kind we have never seen before. Let’s give them some space to be steady.
      .
What matters to us all, is our motherland. That is why we fight with each other. Therefore, we shouldn’t do anything to destabilize the country which will boomarang on our own country and our own people. May the Blessings of Sacred Tooth Relics be upon all of you and all of us!

“We, Sinhalese attack people only when they are steady and strong. “

Is that why your forces hid behind VPs bum when Hindian fighter jets roar above Lions’ head? Is that why they ran miles and mile when Elephant Pass and Mullaitive camps were attacked by bata wearing kids?

Didn’t you pee in your pants when you heard LTTE was in Colombo after the 1983 riots?

        • 6
          3

Yes we all did. LTTE was exceptionally good at killing unarmed civilians but no match for the armed forces.
Tigers and Tamils can equate with cowards. There is nothing brave in shooting at an unarmed person,no Sinhalese did that. That was the cowardly work of the Tamils. Sinhala hero Mahinda put an end to all that. The best news is that Ranil and Sirisena will meet their doomsday very soon, thanks to their treachery. That will be something to savour for a long time. Meanwhile you stupid TamilVedda can retire to your palmyra thatched hut and get on your knees in front of Your Leader Velu the pariah.

The decisions pertaining to your above matters were taken by the UNP political leadership of the country at the time. Our Army were ordered to be on defense mode not on attack mode. You saw the results in 2009, when our Army was on attack mode. They didn’t stop until they crushed both LTTE and your sun-god.
          .
1983 riots was a political production of the UNP. Ordinary Sinhalese had nothing to do with it. In fact, they were the people who shielded Tamil families from mob attacks by hiding them in their homes.
I was never scared of LTTE. Never will.

And the commanders were willing participant of supplying arms, ammunition, medicine, cash, ….. to a well known terrorists. And one of the country’s high ranking soldier/diplomat involved in human smuggling, VP’s wife and children were smuggled into this island from a Nordic country and safely air lifted to Vanni. The high ranking soldier/diplomat was with them all the way from Sweden to Singapore to Sri Lanka to Vanni. Cowards gave everything VP the psychopath needed for him to fight the Hindians.

And the next set of cowards relied on VP to arrange ballot rigging. VP provided a neat victory for Dr Mahinda (LLD + PhDx3).

Remember many owe their position and prosperity to VP. I am sure they secretly remember him and eternally grateful to him in the South.

“You saw the results in 2009, when our Army was on attack mode.”

Many people also saw Turban wearing men in Vanni area.

“They didn’t stop until they crushed both LTTE and your sun-god.”

The Hindians never let the Sri Lankan armed forces to relax or retire until the Hindian objectives were achieved.

Oh well the entire country witnessed the mayhem/pogrom, why couldn’t the so called good people taken preventive measures against the UNP rioters, and demaded their head after the riots. Don’t tell me the good people are from planet earth and rioters are imported from planet Seth. The riots in 1983 was not the first ever in this island.

Did any of the previous government really looke for the criminals for burning down of the Library? SLFP and the other merry men were part of the the government from early 1990s. I assume if the members of SLFP government had any conscience they would have investigated all the previous rioters, arsonists, rapists, … looters, saffron clad thugs, ………….war criminals and found guilty and threw them in prison.

When its come to killing or harming innocent people there isn’t much qualitative difference between UNP or SLFP or you.

Of course you were hiding behind VP’s fat bum and you hope it is unlikely Hindian IPKF II would arrive here once again. We will never know. If and when IPKF II arrives you may have to find room in Sambanda’s amude perhaps C V Wigg’s may let you hide in his.

I agree Champa. One feels a bit sorry for them when we see their sad faces. Let’s face it -they did intend to do the best for the land.
        *
Ranil is unfortunately too bourgeois for the country. His methods will work only in first-world countries. He is insistent that especially the Sinhalese need to work harder to achieve what a place like Singapore has reached. He said that the money will “trickle down” to the masses. He should have said “flow down” instead. Well, the country did give him over two years to try the bourgeois way, but the place just got dirtier and dirtier, with no money for even cleaning up. So something is very wrong. Also relying on Vellela Tamils for country’s monetary policy is a terrible no-to for the masses of all races. Yet, his projects might come to fruition. One never knows when, but it might be a hundred years in the making.
        *
Reenter Rajapaksa. Now he was let go in 2015 because he was stoking the wrath of Obama-Clinton admin. with his BRIC alliance, besides other things perceived. Yet, he had implicit democratic acceptance of the masses in all he did. Money did flow into the country, and there was plenty of cash for cleaning up dirty cities and grand development projects.
        *
Well, now is a time for balancing alliances out. Working with BRIC, together with Singapore-Tamil Nadu alliance might have some merits. Hedge-funds in Singapore might yet yield some profits (depending on the workability of our Lankans – hopefully, Tamil diaspora of barking dogs at embassy gates don’t default on the alliance).
        *
Hopefully, whatever decided will be in line with the true nature of the masses of the land. Sadu.

President should bring back emergency if needed if there is unrest going to be the joint efforts of SLPP and UNP because leaders of both parties very have questionable backgrounds. Get the unspoiled back benchers from everyparty and govern the country.

  • 8
    2

Better to have a UNP government, but without Ranil as the leader cos the bond scam has tainted him too much. When the SLFP is also in the government investors get confused cos the two parties policies are so different for them. They don’t know who is making the decisions.Woe be unto the country if sirisena takes over the economy because the investment will dry up.Better to have only UNP.
The shock result shows that in colombo district where ranil is supposed to hold sway the UNP managed only a third of the votes.Mahinda got 5% more.IF mahinda is more popular than ranil in the colombo district the heartland of the UNP then UNP is now in a dangerous territory and has to change the leader who got more than 300000 preferential votes at the parliamentary election.

gampaha is even worse.UNP got less than 30%.Mahinda got 49%.Even if you add sLFP of 10% they cant beat mahinda even combined.

Colombo and gampaha are the key districts that dwarf other districts population wise and are the barometers of the future.Mahinda is halfway there to power by taking control of gampaha .UNP has to find a good leader who can increase its vote base to 40% in colombo district and 35 % in gampaha district if it wants to rule this country in future.Any thing less will make it less and less relevant.

Better start the reform process urgently.UNP needs a complete overhaul not just a repair. To do that you have to get rid of the leader because he won’t do it.He will only make cosmetic changes.

Death of the SLFP-UNP joint Govt is a good sign for Sri Lanka. If UNP forms its own Government, that would show at the next election how successful or weak they are. We have seen in joint governing SLFP always blocked the progressive ways of UNP and the President has been flip flopping all the way. Malik, Kiriella and Kabir should give up their executive positions in the party and the Ministerial posts. Ranil should not be the sole leader but a Co-Leader of the party with Sajith Premadasa as the other Co-Leader. Ministers should be re-evaluated and Ministers who are suspected of bribery should be removed from the Cabinet and the Cabinet number should be reduced to 30. Ministry of Justice and Law & Order should be under one ministry and be given to Mangala Samaraweera. Educated young UNP MPs should be given Cabinet positions. Its time for the UNP crooks to be kicked out. This is the only way forward for UNP to win the next general election.

As much as I might not be in total agreement with what this “Buddhist”has to say, at least there is some common sense in his proposal. The only thing is that, if the UNP was to cleanse itself, they might have about half a dozen to make up the cabinet. Even that would be better than DOZENS of Ministers running around in duty free luxury cars at our expense, doing f…all!.

Ranil must grow a strong spine first, and be an assertive leader, if he wants to remain in politics. Aren’t there any assertive and honest political candidates left in this country? The entire bunch seems to have their own dishonest agendas, and the Sri Lankan people who keep voting for them, are always disappointed in them.

PM should get lost like his brain did when he concocted a crazy Harsha scheme to collect money through privatizing a non registrable MBBS degree. If he recovers the robbed money from bond scam alone, he can easily absorb SAITM left in the lurch, into a newly approved STATE med. faculty, without shouting “no money”, a dreamy idiotic confused economic principle. Medical education cant depend on money ups and down.

H.E also lost all, just like what he did to SAITM in an act in a sudden mentally deranged moment out of control. It is possible to correct this highway robbery of SAITM thro’ affiliating Malabe to a new STATE medical faculty. Such a simple step to help those deserving students who studied and suffered for 8 years to be given justice verdict already for SLMC registration, shows fear of unauthorized GMOA.
SLMC there to help register new Medical Schools, but now weird and crazy GMOA. Hang the privatization till future and absorb SAITM to state.

I would present another angle to the whole story. True the results were not as expected perhaps even by MR himself. But this should not drive MY3 and RW into despondency. If they call themselves responsible they must act as partners for the period of five years for which MY3 was planked as President. They must do some soul searching. The respective partners may have drawbacks but collectively too they have failed and that is what the result tells us. It is pertinent to note that statement issued by Mangala Samarawera which I must say is candid where he admits serious shortfalls of the team as a whole. The biggest issue is the alienation of the ordinary folk. I make no bones that I voted to oust MR. But I am equally disappointed by the performance of the present team as they could have done much more. If the team leaders of the partnership that obtained my vote in Jan 2015 now split, it can be interpreted that I was tricked into voting an unholy alliance which does not have the basics of sportsmanship. The team was not booted out say in a Parliamentary election, they have two more years to mend their ways even if three years were frittered away.

I think Tamil people must get a decision whether they will be always angry on sinhala people and be outsiders from their motherland like they don’t have a very close, past relationship might goes to Lord Buddha’s era or be a huge, strong wall on defending Sri Lanka in front of other nations. Tamil people have the best mathematical brains from the whole country and I want them come forward and making some good decision with support from Tamil priests and Sinhalese can join hand with Christian people to make the decision the best one for my country. Please help me to convince this to people.

Wounds may heal but scars remain as reminders of an unpleasent past that the tamil had to suffer in this country. Besides this isn’t the major issue now- we are currently led by two incompetents and we need a good old political assasination, mass murder of the ruling class or better a radical strategically executed revolution by the people…

Sanju de Silva; I am Sinhala Buddhist That is to identify myself.More than the Tamils the Buddhist priests have done immense damage to the solidarity of the people of this country.Years ago it was the priests who recorded history. They have gone out of their way to create false history.Viz some of the so called great kings had been Tamils eg Parakramabahu, Devanampiyatissa, Kavan Tissa. In fact I suspect that nearly all of the so called Sinhala kings had been Tamils. What about the ladies on the roads in India brought down as their wives?

So get rid of your ” I think Tamil people must get a decision whether they will be always angry on sinhala “. That is a concept that had been drilled into our brains by the buddhist priests.

    It’s a chaotic situation.
MS has less than 2 yrs left in his mandate; the recent election was only a LG affair under a new voting system. Several sitting members of the parliament have been implicated in the “bond scam”; the courts have not concluded on outcome, of the charges. The country’s economy is in a very poor state and the governance seems chaotic politically.
A caretaker government of some mutually agreed form might be the answer until the recent bribery and corruption commission charges are speedily resolved by the courts hopefully before the next Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
There is a good possibility that some of the sitting members of Parliament might be found guilty of crime making them ineligible for political office in the future.

All you UNP supporters are you aware that Ranil changed the rules to ensure that no one in the UNP hierarchy can oust him. The UNP leadership is decided by its Working Committee or Executive Committee. The rules of theCommitte relating to its composition were from the inception designed to have a balance of power between the existing Chairman/President of the Party and its rank and file. In other words if a Chairman became too authoritarian the Committee could remove him. When Ranil was first elected leader of the party he changed the rules immediately increasing the number of nominees to the Cttee by him and decreasing the number elected by the rank and file. ConsequentlyRanil became leader of the party for life as the Committtee is loaded with his stooges. This is the kind of chicanery that he is trying to impose on the country as well. Unfortunately the UNP has some dumb followers who allow themselves to be manipulated by a person without principles.

We must accept the fact that we will never be able to get persons of integrity into governance.
The coalition in spite of faults had checks and balances. We must try and breathe in life a bit longer and see the benefit.
Will be a pity if the coalition ends up in a mortuary.
