Nepotism Grows: Hirunika’s Aunt Appointed As Sri Lanka’s Consul In Los Angeles

The Sirisena-Wickremesinghe regime’s policy of helping friends and family appears to have spread to the Foreign Ministry with career diplomats being overlooked in favour of loyalists and their kin.Swarna

Swarna Pushpa Kanthi Gunaratne, sister of Hirunika Premachandra‘s late father Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s consul in Los Angeles, USA. She had never held a diplomatic post before or had any career training or experience in the diplomatic service.

Can you find anyone in Sri Lanka who is not related to someone else?

You are truly right. Just because Hirunika is a MP, all others that have credentials to do the job must not be blocked. I think CT, this no right. As I read somewhere, the lady above is said to have a degree in international relations or so.

We must not exagerate. Ones lived and know the langauge of a country are the best choice to appoint for such positions.

Where we went against were – uneducated guys being appointed as Ambssadors for example former Pres COusin Brother Jaliya -who is said to have no Alevels but long years tea tasting exp and tea business. Seeking diplomatic immunity, some former soldiers but having contacts with Rajapakshes were qualified to get appointed as ambssardors to the UN – there [Edited out] Dayana Jayathilaka et al too kept silent farting further. For his reasons his so called senior knoweldge was blocked to that time. Besides, Where on the earth tea tasters worked for Embassies representing the country. In contrary to this, the one appointed to the UK was a well qualified person by Education – though the man was beated to floor by Rajaakshes baggae boy.

So true. As one visitor observed, ” seems like all you guys seem to be related to each other”. We are an incestuous lot, NO?

Is Hirunika..ka..ka..ka following in the footsteps of Kshenuka..ka..ka..ka?

But, the question is, who is the new Sa..Sa..Sajin?

Uncle Nephew is now Aunty Niece. Nice, NO!

But, she was the Aunt of Hirunika..

This is wrongful informatoiin: With all respect to Amarasiri and his facts being mostly added to CT forum.

Please differenciate this issue from others. Ok. as Hamlet and PUnchiburamphi make it clear, nepotism we opposed was appointing any one for such responsible position.

Example No .1 – Jaliya Balasooriya or the someone who cant even comprehend good English – had been appointed as the Ambassador to the US – I have no doubt, he should have gone thorugh all the torment while doing the job- former president abused the funds for Jaliya to get his correspondence ready – these were million on the total. We must not be americans – but in srilanka we have enough fach personnel to do the job as an Ambassador. Most of all SL is a common welath country.

I wonder why the srilankens living in the US did not go day long protest being against to the appointement by Maharaja then. Jaliyas predecessors had higher credentials -to do the job.

      You are right Hamlet

Some one is related to someone ruling class and the educated crowd always rubs shoulders and get married within this group of people.
The new government can rid of this horrible Nepotism by looking for educated trained ones in the field out side this group certainly , but they re still practising the same mode as the previous government.
Does that make the present government better than the last government? Absolutely not they are following like ” SHEEP FOLLOWING THE SHEEP ” no difference.
The government will pay for these mistakes in the near future,,
General public is fed up of their short comings.

Do we see the results of the mistakes the past governments committed since the INDEPENDENCE?
Created swabasha medium and also created village idiots to vote for extremists views . While the countries around us Eg: India, Singapore, China Japan and so on are so prosperous and producing well educated scholars to take part in the world of technology , science and education our village idiots can only fathom a 6 Worded sentence,
      SINHA -LE .
Colombo Elite can fathom more than 6 worded English and they’re also connected to the PM , and other
Elites so the machine of Nepotism roll on in the RW, MS Regime.
Who made these mistakes following the Independence you and I Hamlet and the other Millions of people who listened to the destructive words of the politicians and voted for them thinking The country and the people on the whole will benefit in the the name of Racism , Religious intolerance, and simple hatedness preached by the progressive regimes.

Now we can’t expect even some of the Colombites ,intelligent enough to be world famous scientists or writers even.
Srilankans are not only mad and chauvinistic but have produced Liars , Thieves and Murderers as well in plentiful.
Very sad to see my country had reached to this.
All should take the blame from the Parents, to Politicians and the PRELATES WHO RUNS THE RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS.
WE ARE THE SHAMELESS JOKERS OF THE SOUTH ASIA.

Are The Elite schools churning out self centred mad rich kids who does not have the intelligence to know “stepping on to a stage ” where a celebratory function was taking place was wrong when one is NOT INVITED???

RE: Nepotism Grows: Hirunika’s Aunt Appointed As Sri Lanka’s Consul In Los Angeles

Can you please appoint Amarasiri’s Aunt as Sri Lanka’s Consul In New York, the Big Apple? It will be considered Nepotism, and she is smarter, wiser and healthier than Hirunika’s Aunt.

Have you thrown meritocracy out the window of Yahapalanaya?

              Premawathie/ Hamlet

The issue is not really relationships. It is really qualifications.

              It is a disclosure issue.

So they need to say something about the qualifications for the job.
What qualification the candidate has, and then say that the candidate also happens to be an Aunt, and that we will will not disqualify anybody because the candidate is somebody’s aunt.

After all, in Sri Lanka, we call most older women’s Aunties or Aunts.

If you call it YAMPALANA – then what we faced prior to 8th Jan 2015 should NOT have proper words to name it. They looted, they attacked anyone that went against them. Remember toy pistol mayors, remember those thugs set to create fears in the visiting FACT finding missions consisted of Unp YOUNG blood ? You guys are soaked by Rajapakshe extrements as nothing can help you free from. Ballah is disgracing the dogs community – that is pathetic.

        uncle simon,
you sound like a real yamapalana voter, no wonder you also believe the looting story. now yamapalana jokers have been in power for more than one year, aren’t you able to find the treasure? are you planning to dig the whole country up?
FYI – pistol mayor is with amaraweera now who is an obedient servant of appa sira and ponil.
bottom line is every desapaluwa is involved in crimes, misuse of public funds…etc. But previous regime was lot better than these inefficient, worthless yamapalana clowns. under yamapalane, economy is collapsed, national security is at risk, culture is doomed, buddhism is tarnished, sinhalese buddhists are intimidated and chased away from north and east, taxes are increased, government is bending to muslims and tamils, terrorists are released, war heros are jailed, army intelligence is betrayed, …

by the way as per PM, VAT is not applicable for punnakku. You must be happy for that

as one of the commentators made it very clear – there are also dogs that eat the extrements left heaped from other dogs. This kind of dogs I have seen. Ballah belongs to the latter category. Would do anything and everythign to protect Mr High criminal (nice synonyme) for any cost. He would have given his wife or any family ones to appease Rajaapskhes. This kind of people I met myself during last trip to lanka. They feel the roads have been made by Rajaanoo is one of 7 wonders. I travelled to Kenya and Serveral other afro countries even they do have high ways. Chinese have introdcuced them to their survivial. We dont have to have highways before the nation being taken to some levels – we have over 40% of the folks that live on huts. That dont earn a 5 dollars a day. These ballige puthas have grabed tax payers funds telling and fooling them further fairy tales. One of the intoxicated is ballah. I know we all should be there, but the manner Ballah is set to defend Rajanao is so ridiculous. Good luck folks.

Please CT you need to bring a better ” thump up” system. This particular creature – appointed by MR with the USER name BALLAH is full time jobber to this forum to stand against anyone adding the comments agianst Rajapakshes. He himself seems to add ” Thumb up ” so that it could be seen, that more readers hail to them than the others. But we perfectly know that CT forum commentators are mostly educatd folks joining from foreign destinations. They did a great job through your platform to drive away the Rajajapskehs – they were one of the forces that spread all the truths against any nationalistic thought bearers.
Native Vedda, Sirimal, Srilal, Gamini and all worked together to go against Rajapakshe Regime.
My suggestion is to make a collection to help you guys to do the great job further. I am to support – my details I can give you by sending you a pvt E-mail. The name of late most rev. Sobitha Thero, Iwill do anything and everything to marginalise Rajapakshes.

She is Bharatha’s sister and Hiru’s aunt. Isn’t that all we need to know? She is then fully qualified.

Now it is their turn to enjoy the fruits provided by SL taxpayers.

      Cheers!

PS: Mangie must have received professional advise from highly skilled Singapore Foreign Service to appoint Hiru’s aunt as a strategic choice.

Based on a previous tread on CT about this person, she was educated in USSR and is an Accountant.Had a good career in the oil and Gas industry and has a good understanding of software(industry and job specific) programs. The last qualifications is a must for anyone working for corporation in the developed world and most of the time the training is provided by the employer. Cananda’s oil and gas industry is in a very bad shape with mass layoffs this is a good break for a person who I believe has passed the legal retirement age. Can’t blame BraSira for the appointment as this is similar to the one for CEO SLT. The question is why didn’t this post openly advertised? Couldn’t we find the most qualified and experience person to fit this position?

      Thanks for this.

These people should be educated by giving the facts.

They else mix up everything. Just because they are given chances to post.

This is the same with SOCIAL MEDIA community in colombo. They criticise almost everything today, not thinking twice. But at the time, bugger et al was in the office, these very same SOCIAL media affined men and women stayed as if they were fed with Kirimati. I wonder why Daily mirror only adds news supportive to Rajapakshes.
Other tabloids are not that far to react so swiftly. Rajapakashes so called slam yestreday was reported by those media men within hours.

Things won’t change that easily in Sri Lanka. You have only two choices Mahinda or Ranil, but the ideology is almost the same. At lease Sinhalese have two choices, but Tamils have only Sampanthan, sad isn’t it? There is something about South Asians. They can’t change that easily, no matter how much help they get from Singapore, South Korea or Japan. Not everyone born to live a better life, because not everyone knows what it takes to live a better life. Short-mined people think that ripping off others is the way forward. I have been living in Sri Lanka since May 2015. Based on my findings not only politicians, average Sri Lankas are ripping off others. Politicians do not fall from the sky, they come from the community. It is very clear the community is corrupted and the majority are Short-mined. The people blame the politicians to feel better.

    • 5
      5

Do you add this just beacause others did or having read what are being discussed here ?

Man, we must not criticise each everyone this way. That is always no fair.

      What does Nepotims means ?

“the act of using your power or influence to get good jobs or unfair advantages for members of your own family:
He was guilty of nepotism and corruption.” cambridge dictionary

So, the rulers that hated Rajaakshe to have appointed all baggage boy to his condom testers to the job – I really dont think will leave any space unqualified candiates to be appointed.

This candidate is proved to have worked years long in the area and is bringing with the requirement – leaving Hirunika aside, why not the particular candiate be given a chance ?

Please be away from interpreting the Nep this way – that is no means fair. S

Since last year I have involved with two private educational institutions, NGOs and Think Tank. One Institute based in Colombo and the other one is in Jaffna. The institute in Colombo was printing and selling Diploma certificates to make money.

The UK based NGO is funding Tamil students to get education through a private institution in Jaffna. It offers hospitality, travel and tourism, English teacher training and English diploma courses for Tamil students who have failed G.C.E O/L and A/L. However, it does not have qualified lecturers. Not even one employee has been offered an appointment letter with salary details. The Chairman verbally promises good salary when he hires a lecturer or admin workers; however, in reality he pays very little. He hasn’t disclosed how much he gets from the NGOs per student. He has few houses in Colombo and two houses in Jaffna, as well as two cars. He entertains his friends at four or five star hotels. He collects the poor and vulnerable students’ details from the Divisional Secretariat Offices then orders his staff to call students and pretend as they are calling from Divisional Secretariat’s Office for an employment, and ask them to come for an employment meeting.  Propaganda meetings are well organized at Divisional Secretariat’s Offices to lure the students into money making projects in the name of education.

Not even one set of printed notes or uniform have been given to a hospitality or travel and tourism students. However, Rs.3900 has been received from every student for lecture notes, school ID and uniform. In December we took 110 students from the Institute for a leadership training to Dambulla. However, the manager bought alcohol for students and spoiled the entire training. The manager himself didn’t get an appointment letter with salary details. He is just there to get some money to buy alcohol. He enjoyed drinking alcohol more than making leaders during the training. The NGOs are funding the Tamil students’ education, and the Sri Lankan government is funding the leadership training. But Tamil students are drinking alcohol on their saving. Those days Tamils gave first priority for their education; but now days first priority for drinking alcohol. Interestingly, the college manager is buying alcohol for them. The Chairman is making money and the manager is enjoying alcohol in the name of education. Tamils are destroying themselves, without a doubt their sad status will continue.

I wrote a project proposal to the Western Country on behalf of a ‘Think Tank’ in Jaffna. It almost got approved. Recently, I had a long chat with treasurer about implementing the project efficiently and effectively. However, he told me that he was planning to spend Rs.500000-800000 for the other purposes. This is totally breach of contract, and it is against my professionalism and ethics. Since the treasurer has decided to use the fund for the other purposes. I requested in writing about my involvement. As an Accountant I also requested to have access to accounts and bank statements to verify payments. However, nothing has been done in writing. The Think Tank claims it has been conducting hundreds of seminars and trainings, but its financial record doesn’t reflect that claim. The treasurer said that he doesn’t keep the record to avoid paying a bookkeeper. The truth is money end up somewhere else other than actual purpose.

Everywhere is dirty and dark. Now we know why Tamils are going backward even though they are five times in population in the world than Sinhalese. I have decided stay away from the so called ‘Think Tank’. I have informed to the fund providers and Akilan Kathirkamar about the Think Tank’s financial irregularities. Now you know why Tamil got nothing after 30 years of brutal war. They are still thinking and acting as Prabhakaran. They don’t seem to learn, sad isn’t it?

I am also trying to repair my parents’ house in Jaffna. It is mpossible to get good tradesmen in Jaffna. All have gone as refugees, whoever remains doesn’t have skills but demanding Rs 1500 per day, on top of that lunch, tea etc. Eelam has caused so much difficulties for Sri Lankans, especially for Tamils. We can’t even find a good mason or painter to repair our house. Thanks to Tamil leaders.

Happened to read the work you’re involved and ” congrats Mate!!” Keep up the good work and don’t let the vultures in the middle swallow up the charity donations given in good faith .
Are we still in the middle of slum minded educationists who have taken up the jobs in the pretext of , “do Gooders” and depriving the deprived.
We all know what happens to them eventually ,

It all makes me sick to think the kind of thieves still around in the name of GoodGovernance ready to destroy the future generation and the future of our country.

why not sumanthiran and those who live in Canada and other countries ? Why cant they give a lead to tamil community ? Why you think so narrow mindedly in terms of tamil folks ?

And the facts, thereare lot more sinhalese too to give lankens a lead.. why not Premadasa or the young blood of UNP.. and SLFP and even AKD led JVPers..

I wish AKD to be elected as a the leader of the nation – but peple reject JVPrs since they are so blunt. People are highly corrupted in this country. Meaning the Majority – they love favourisation, connections or the like latter also belong to corruption. They dont care things moving forward to a manner so long they are with state given rice packets. Most of them would not want to contribute their taxes as is the case for westerners. People should be more informed thorugh awarness workshops. Then only the country could move to the right direction. Ranil or MY3 alone cant make them move if the folks stay stuck to their corrupted leaders. Even if Raja would have raped your kith and kin – there are people that would continue to love him for one reason they believe magical powers of Raja liberated the country. These brain washed people would not listen to anyone, so long media men would continue their support. This goes this way – until the country iwll be ended up with the destiny of Greece.

        Lin,

What’s wrong in educating the people about the Western leaders, who have been ruling the world for the last 700 years by exploiting others’ homelands and resources? I urge to stop your dirty propaganda. I have facts, I applied thousands of Jobs, but the Western leaders deliberately stopped me from getting a job due to my writings. The Americans and British think that they can continue to dominate the world by ignoring what the Australians have done to me. But it will continue to backfire on their democracy and human rights. By the Way I don’t hate Westerners, I only educate others about the Western governments. When the Western leaders stopped me from attending my mother’s funeral; a Tamil told me to “drive a car into a crowd and kill as many as you can to teach them a lesson”. I don’t do that kind of things, because I don’t hate Westerners. Second I know far better than that. I am really exposing the Western leaders’ double standards, and making them very uncomfortable.

What’s wrong in exposing the South Asians’ ill dealings to educate them, so they can move on? It may seem that I am hating everyone, but I am educating others. It is very sad you don’t have the knowledge to see my hard work.

nothing wrong if you don’t live off the hand outs from the West that’s the moot point your only income the Dole to live is provided by New Zealand tax payer. So stop trying to be a Pseudo fighting solder against the west. And the fact is you are not w3elocme in Singapore.

Stop fooling yourself. Who the hell are you to tell me that I am not welcome in Singapore? You kept me unemployed and made me survive on dole, but I am giving you with interest. Don’t talk about immaterial things such as dole, but talk about how many innocent people you have killed in Iraq, Syria, Vietnam, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Plus how much you have ripped off from Iraqi people, New Zealand Maori people, Australian Aboriginal people, Native Americans and First Nations in Canada. Should I call you the devil or worst criminal in this earth?

By the way when is your next human rights lecture? I just want to send a reminder so you can preach to yourself. Eventually, you will be sorry, because you have tried to fool Antany Peter.

If Yahapalana is to be truly enacted then all appointments of friends and relations must cease.

Chit system must be replaced by open advertisement of vacancies and selection must be by a PSC like body consisting of non-political individuals. There are plenty of qualified Sri Lankans here and abroad who not related to these ……..

If not lets stop using this Yahapalana lable thenceforth. We have quite enough of these good for nothing ……………..

Do these types of recruitment go through the recently constituted “Public Service Commission”?. As per “Yahapalanya’s” comment above she must be a Canadian citizen and probably holds “Dual Citizenship”. Now she will get a “Green Card” from USA on the strength of this appointment. I know, during the previous regime, Mr. Bogollagama’s sister-in-law who was an Accountant in Sri Lankan Airlines was appointed as the High Commissioner to Singapore having given her approved leave for three years to accept the appointment. So it is “Make Hey While The Sun Shines”. What a change Late Rev. Sobitha and those Civil Society organizations brought to us on January 08, 2015?

Antany Peter: Welcome to our “Paradise”. Now you will have first hand experience of how, we in this “Paradise” are handling our Governance and daily strive to maintain its status as the “Miracle of Asia”. Thak you for joining us in that efforts.

The fact of the matter is that she got the appointment solely because she is Hirunika’s aunt; and that is sheer nepotism.

All the best to CT on your fight against nepotism in Sri Lanka

Ananda Wickramesighe used to hold the same position under MR regime.
No diplomatic experience other than he was Basil’s brother- in law.

The Sirisena – Wickremasinghe Govt said then, 70 pct of Diplomatic Postings will be made from folks in the Foreign Service.

This must be part of the 30 pct, of political appointments.

Let’s scream blue murder and let it go. Shall we.

Don’t the diplomatic corps have a trade union of their own. Why don’t
they protest when an outsider is selected, outside the foreign ministry,
to represent our country. Its a shame on FM Mangala as he is the one who should be doing the selection from the foreign ministry and not every Dick Tom and Harry from the Govt.

Take India as an example as they select diplomats from the pool and
no outsiders are selected to represent their country.

The earlier incumbent was one of Gota’s buddies. Gota used to stay at his place during his latter visits to Los Angeles.
    The appointment was the reward.
No relative. So, no nepotism noh? Although this man was unqualified for the job.

Consul General is usually an honorary position. MR’s tea trader ethically challenged Cousin the very dark skinned Prabakaran looking man was appointed Consul General because he had money. Usually a respected captain of industry or top doctor lawyer etc or a man who gives money to campaigns is given these honorary posts. In case of MR his cousin spoke broken English but ended up being Ambassador for two terms. You can ask some of his close associates from his days in Georgia about how truly honest he is in returning borrowed money. But during his halcyon days everyone kissed ass to this black beauty who became a tea trader after 10th grade Olevels.

LA has so many Lankans; mostly green card lottery people of all backgrounds, all types, sinhala gamaraala types, professor types from rural SL to elite SL,illegal immigrants etc and has so many factions too.

I doubt if this woman is socially refined or educated but all you do is rubberstamp visas and attend some functions. Hopefully she speaks better english than MR’s ethically challenged cousin who held that position. Typical Lankan Sinhala behavior to be expected. Can she be articulate and effective in meeting businessmen to invite investments? As you saw Dahama Wimalasena is the new Malaka Silva anything can happen in the miracle of Asia.

What qualifications and expertise she has to hold this position. Yahapalanaya is not working as advocated. Where is Mangala and Ranil, why these blokes are silent. We dont need comparisons between previous and current governments. We would like to see a perfect Yahapalanaya. Mithri treating his friends shame on you.

The diplomatic service always had people outside of the foreign service being appointed to posts. That is not going to stop anytime soon. It is common practice the world over. From military officials to politicians to all sorts of people to whom political favors have to be granted. That is a sordid part of democracy. As long as the majority of appointments are from to foreign services I see no harm done. But there are those with axes to grind so any little thing is enough to go have a hissy fit over.

We are for Good governance and it will not change for what ever temporary set back comes in. S.L.F.P has always shown its ugly face when ever they have the opportunity. We have no doubt and condemned-this trend.

Yes we are for GG , we will go on pinpointing the mistakes the GG continues to do until they get corrected , until then we use the democracy with which we are blessed with by the curtesy of the GOOD GOVERNANCE for which we are thankful for it of course.
Have we been able to say a “word ” against the last Regime during their time ??? We were fearful of the whitevans and the murder squad of MR, GR AND MOSSAD.ok

People were afraid to speak to their friends or neighbours in case they belonged to the Murder squad, Atleast we have a bit of civilisation in our country due to the Regime change now.

The Ignorant Modayas the followers of the last thieves are enjoying the present day freedom which we fought and won which they enjoy too.

Hirunika is a well known law-breaker. Whether she was behind this appointment or not, her family has some special characters of law breaking. The count-down to the days of MS-RW government has already started and as usual it is triggered by the monkey.

MS & RW let their voters down daily. Is this good governance???
