CID Inspector of Police Nishantha Silva has fled the country after receiving death threats, Colombo Telegraph can reveal.

Six days into Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s presidency, security provided to CID Inspector of Police Nishantha Silva was summarily removed, prompting security fears for the top detective handling some of the most high profile cases at the Department.
IP Nishantha Silva who functions as OIC of the Gang Robberies Branch at the CID, oversees some of the CID’s most sensitive investigations, including the assassination of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge, the abduction and assault of journalist Keith Noyahr and the disappearance and suspected murder of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda. IP Silva also handles the explosive navy abductions investigation, which has implicated high ranking navy officers including the current Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijeguneratne and former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda. Silva busted navy personnel who were running an abduction for ransom racket in 2008-2009. 11 Tamil youth were abducted and illegally detained at two navy bases and ultimately killed, Silva’s investigations revealed. Just before the presidential election, the Attorney General decided to request a trial at bar to hear the navy abductions case and indicted several navy officers in connection with the trial, including former Commander Wasantha Karannagoda. One of the main suspects in the abduction case is Commodore D.K.P. Dassanayake who is tipped to be President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Navy Commander.
Many of the cases handled by Silva have implicated military intelligence personnel in the grave crimes against journalists and others, making Silva and his former director SSP Abeysekera targets of the security establishment and Sinhala hardline monks.
His involvement in investigations particularly close to home for the former Defence Secretary who was elected president on November 16, has made IP Silva a target of the Rajapaksa regime even previously. During the October 2018 attempted coup, the National Security Council was especially convened for the sole purpose of expediting the transfer of IP Nishantha Silva out of the CID, according to testimony provided by former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, when he appeared before the Parliamentary Select Committee hearings into the Easter Sunday attacks. At the time the IGP was ordered to transfer Silva to Negombo on a service requirement. The transfer was reversed within 24 hours after a massive public outcry against the move and a stern warning from the National Police Commission that they would step in unless Silva was reinstated. The transfer was seen as being politically motivated in order to ensure the investigations Silva was leading would be stalled or sabotaged.

To put a long story short IP Adrian Nishantha Silva is handling cases against the murder / maiming of journalists and others of public interest. What is the out come of all this? Some guys are remanded for years. We as the public are interested in the prosecution and the conviction of offenders. It is public knowledge that the Attorney General had called for these files and found the contents of them is scanty. Why is the progress so tardy? If people are professionals and of value and integrity their files should be completed either this way or that way. These murders are not art works for people either to project or downplay the images of some. They are serious crimes requiring serious action.

There is an another story. I had a friend working for one of the Private Hospital Company Ltd in Colombo as Financial Controller. I think that GR was the Chairman of the Board as it came under one of the Government Organisations.
I was told he was summoned to CID and tried their best interrogation methods to get evidence against GR. Then my friend told the CID he does not know any wrongdoings by GR.
My friend was told, if you know anything against GR, please inform them later.
That shows their independence, integrity and professionalism. CT publishing these article without any decency in journalism.

In any civilised country, law & order is expected, and any public servant under investigation will be automatically sent on ‘garden leave’ until the investigations are completed & will be reinstated only if found not guilty. In the private sector, any impropriety would mean instant dismissal or if the case is unproven, a nudge from the senior management to step down voluntarily (maybe with a golden handshake) is to be expected for exposing the establishment for unfavourable publicity. In SL of course, it is not only senior public officials & commanders of the security forces, the President elect him self is under suspicion for grave crimes committed, from abuse of power to even kidnap & murder, yet remain in power, even when investigations are in progress. No wonder these cases are moving (if at all) at snail’s pace with obstacles, from missing evidence to intimidation of witnesses, at every step. The lawless culture is so rampant that honest public servants are compelled to ‘go with the flow’ or turn a blind eye for survival.
Justice & law & order deteriorated rapidly in SL, particularly, since the previous Rajapakse regime with the appointment of cronies with no professional pride or integrity. The writing on the wall is clear, the law of the jungle will prevail despite the hype & election pledges of the new President.
