By Fr Chryso Pieris SJ –
Surveying the political landscape today, listening to the voice cuts and speeches of various politicians and their supporters, the picture that comes to my mind is that of Siduhath Bodhisatva calmly and most peacefully facing the attacks of Maraya in various guises. The attacks of Maraya are more personal than socio-political. Siddhartha has not yet started to destabilize the status quo.
Around five hundred years later there was a similar scenario with Jesus of Nazareth. This time the attackers were humans and more specific; The political, social, religious and commercial leaders of ancient Judea, Samaria and Galilee.
“He is out of his mind.” “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” “By the prince of demons he drives out demons.” “He has an unclean spirit.” These are some of the accusations attacking Jesus. Those attacks were meant to discredit him and destroy his popularity. These accusations were at the beginning of his public life. But the attacks became more serious and more vicious later at the tail end of his short life.
After Jesus chased out of the Temple the money-changers and sellers of pigeons and sheep, the powers that were, were becoming wary of his movement and popularity. He was becoming a threat to their leadership, influence, income and their power. He called the satrap Herod a fox and the Pharisees and Sadducees white-washed tombs containing rot. Indirectly he told the people not to pay taxes to the Empire. At the hearing in the Sanhedrin, he was accused of putting himself on the same level with God, Yahweh. But that will not cut ice with Pontius Pilate the Roman, therefore in front of him they accused Jesus of setting himself up as their king in opposition to the emperor making himself a traitor to the Empire. Simply put Jesus of Nazareth was a serious threat to their power, positions and privileges. He was giving people dignity and making people free and sovereign. He was liberating people from slavery to pharisaical laws and imperial decrees. He was a danger and a real threat to the status quo. He had to be eliminated.
In the eternal and irreconcilable antagonism between Good and Evil, Evil always attacked Good by trying to denigrate it and destroy the sympathy humans have for it. Through lies and canards about Good it tried to weaken the trust humans place in the Good. It will go to any length, any vicious stinking stab-in-the-back crime to stop the Good from achieving its noble goals.
These thoughts came to my mind surveying the happenings in the political scene. After the Aragalaya 22 there is clearly a demand by the vast majority for a morally clean, safe and a level playing field in society. The only politically trustworthy alliance is the NPP. I call it the Grand Alliance of Good People. The rest are made up of the old rotten governance of greed, nepotism and all sorts of immorality. There is surely an imminent paradigm shift, a renascence, a system change. All of us are, with great patience, waiting for it to happen. As days pass it is becoming more and more difficult to restrain the victims of this evil governance from repeating the Aragalaya 22. Rural women, poor widows with children, at the end of their tether, full of anger at seeing their children going hungry call me and ask me when we are going to get on to the street. A mother who sees her children starving can become a tigress. I tell them it is with great patience that people restrain themselves from doing that. It is only the forthcoming presidential election that retrains them. The whole country is waiting for this election as never before for any other election.
The barking and braying go on at every opportunity they get to slander, accuse and denigrate the NPP. The government, the opposition and even some religious leaders have nothing else to say about the future of this country or plans for its development except blame everything on the old JVP and the 88-89 happenings. Everybody knows who perpetrated the infamous Black July, who burnt down the Jaffna library, who suppressed and hunted down the JVP which had nothing to do with the Black July crimes and atrocities, who sponsored and what happened at Batalanda. It is the same amnesia that SLPPs have of May 9th. They only talk about the MP who got killed and the burning of their houses. They completely forget what caused all that ire of the people; the SLPP goons attacking the Aragalaya 22, sent with cudgels by MR after treating them to a breakfast with alcohol!
All those who have an interest in keeping the status quo alive will be against the NPP. From what I said at the beginning I’m not saying that the NPP is Bodhisatva or Jesus Christ but that NPP is the only haven of the Good People of this country. Evil will be always against the Good.
The evil status quo will try all kinds of tricks to divide, discredit and destroy the NPP. It is only a short time left to the crucial election. The NPP will have to keep in mind these two things.
01. Internally speaking safeguarding and protecting the unity and cohesion of the NPP at all costs.
02. Externally speaking the NPP must parry the accusations of the status quo but never go down to the barking and braying style of the opponent. All the NPPs and their supporters must be in their best behavior in public. The second external issue is more dangerous. The evil status quo and the NPP are playing for very high stakes. The lives of the leaders of the NPP, especially the life of AKD, may be in danger. The protection of these lives must be top priority and it must never be allowed to relax. The safety measures must be active and alert twenty-four hours a day, every day, till the election results are out.
God bless the Aragalaya 22 and the Grand Alliance of Good People.
Cicero / June 11, 2024
May Agree with all that you say. But you want us to have a simple faith in the NPP. This is politics not religion. The JVP must state their economic policy which will get the country out of the present mess. It must indicate a credible policy on the ethnic issue. Simple rhetoric is not enough for voters to make a rational choice.
/
davidthegood / June 11, 2024
Cicero, the two issues you mention as needed for JVP/NPP are the economic policy and the ethnic issue. But for voters to make a rational choice, they need to feel that more mature leaders need to be involved with AKD who are trustworthy and will deal with the robberies that are going on right now to bankrupt the nation. This is the reason why several mature leaders who are not obsessed with themselves but selfless and want to help the citizens come up to a higher level of living affecting the next generation as well. If AKD tries to be alone, could be lopped off as the current set is used to clinging like glue to what they have already tasted. As for the ethnic issue it has taken too long for the minorities to merge with than oppose the majority.
/
Nathan / June 11, 2024

davidthegood,
Minorities have been long pleading with the majority not to suppress the minorities. And now, you blame the minorities. Are you for real.
/

davidthegood ,
We never had mature leaders , so , we don’t have mature voters .
We always had Mature Preachers in abundance and AKD and CO
is no different . They are now telling the people what beautiful
worlds look like elsewhere on the planet and makes the voter feel
the pressure of having one for themselves but How , is not
explained . The need of a Welfare State exists in all developing
countries but getting there is the task . The truth is JVP knew all
along that it can not get there with a mindset trained by the 76 yr
old kinship and nepotism dominated system and so , here we have
now an NPP alternative to match the 76 yr tradition .

It is difficult to understand all the significant things that are happening. This is why I’m so particular about establishing who I am, where I am, and now I’m telling you that the time is 07:14 (taking account now for how long it will take me to submit this comment whilst sipping my coffee.)
.
At 05:20 I had a 10 minutes 36 seconds chat with the 40 year old man who was on duty at the NPP Headquarters – a place that I have physically visited twice. You will know that Macron has scheduled elections for 30/06/2024 because he knows that the climate has changed to his disadvantage! That is true democracy, not Ranil holding on to illegitimate power till the very last second.
.
However, you may not know that the four Sri Lankans deported to Rwanda were not from London, but from Diego Garcia. Makes a little difference, doesn’t it? Anura’s London meeting is going on – 15th at 2.00 pm – make adjustments for Summer Time, etc.

Americans do not want Americans killed in their wars. So I suspect that people in authority here want our dumb soldiers to get killed in place of Americans. I think our government is happy to be American proxies in getting killed in place of Americans by Putin.

“The JVP must state their economic policy which will get the country out of the present mess. “
Sri Lanka is not a developed nation like West. What is the economic policy on Corruption? What is the economic policy of the Racism? What is the economy of Buddhist Fundamentalism? Both SLFP and UNP had so many experts like Dr. NM Perera, Colvin R.De.Silva, Ronnie De Mel, as Finance ministers and advisors etc in the past What happened to the economy now? Are we going to go with the same old policies which protect the corruption, racism, Fundamentalism or are we going to make who are not tested jet?
Sinhalese youth took arms against the rulers, not with the people but with the Governments and its machinery. Similarly Tamil youths took arms not against the people but against the governments and government Machinery. But Government took arms against People. We cannot ignore thousands of Sinhalese were massacred by Government. Similarly thousands of Tamils were massacred by Governments. The country need to make change and that change should get rid of racism and fundamentalism. Economic policies alone bring peace. We need to target for the causes of economic crisis, not economic policies.
/
Jaffna Man / June 11, 2024
Not quite fair. Is Cicero asking Ranil for his economic policy? His real policy?
If you read Jehan Perera’s article today, our debt is increasing and we are in for a bad time.
Ranil’s policy is more of the bad stuff that led to Aragalya. We can see it as he sucks up to the middle class by importing motor cars again.

“NPP, in short, is the “Brain Child” of JVP.”
–
The few who are in the know or have a bit of gray matter know NPP is the front for JVP which knew it could not survive the public relation war with its deplorable past and its outdated so called ideology. AKD and his mates many include THE UNASHAMED old guards found it necessary to at least rebrand JVP image hence the new NPP with old racists pulling the strings behind the scene and repackaging its domestic and foreign policies to con the public, ……..
–
Wonder how much say the new faces have over the Lal Kanthas, Tilvins, ……
–
NPP is rebranding of old JVP without much changes to its core ideology of centralised power, meaning ordering people what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat, what to think, when to think, how justice would be meted out at the village level, when, where, ……. and how to s**t, …. without fundamental changes to the construct of the state which will ensure accountability and transparency.
–
Under NPP/JVP rule people may not be allowed to think for themselves do what they want to do within the law, eat …. sleep with the women … until permission is granted by Lalkantha, Tilvin Silva, ……………… Vijitha Herath, Sunil Handunnetti, … ghosts of Somawansa and Wijeweera, …. and their local functionaries.

The time now is 10:24. So, this comment (where I intend focussing on India) is being written two hours later.
.
During that time, I have actually read the entire article by “Fr Chryso Pieris SJ“. It is a wonderful and well-thought out article. It deals with Jesus as a human being, and with the battle between good and evil here and now. Let’s forget about whether there is life after death!
.
I’ve also spent over an hour listening to this intelligently compiled 35 minute video in English:
.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAY7-eaU8KM
.
Shekhar Gupta discussing Modhi’s cabinet, which doesn’t have a single Muslim in it. India somehow manages to hold together. 172 million Muslims!
.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_India
.
One has to stop, ponder, and go on. Not to find out whether God exists, but because it becomes socially important! So, old codger keeps referring to me as “Anglican”. I don’t strongly object because it tells a person something about what I am.
.
Fr. Pieris has been consistent – right down to the spelling of his surname!
.
Whilst listening to Shekhar Gupta, I did glance at the right side of the desktop computer screen. Other analyses were displayed – but how much to explore?

Strange! I’ve just discovered this whilst typing. The Tamil there is translated by Google as “A call to a new nation!“. There seems to be another meeting in Slough! Location: Bath Road. Why is it not called Bristol Road? Almost nobody has heard of Bath, except me, from reading Jane Austen.
.
I will have to say much more on my return!
[Edited out]

LankaScot / June 14, 2024
Hello SM,
Bath is a wonderful place. Go and see the Roman Baths and the Georgian Architecture. Slough used to be much of a joke throughout the UK as being filled with 1960s Concrete buildings. Windsor Castle is close by. I haven’t been to Slough for quite a few years, so it might have changed.
Best by Train to get to Slough, Harrow take the Tube. Last time I went to Harrow (on the Hill) there seemed to be a fairly big Asian population so AKD might get a big audience. It used to be white working class back in the 50s and 60s.
London is one of these places that you will hear multiple different languages, owing to its previous Empire.
Best regards

Dear LankaScot,

May I say, “a most interesting comment”?
.
I’m sure that you realise the irony in your giving me instructions on how to get to Slough, considering that I’ve never been to Europe!
.
More to the point, there are some contradictions regarding the venue of AKD’s meeting in London later today. I have had a 52 minute chat, at 01:01 am, with the person on duty at the NPP Head Office. He was particularly helpful, but we’re not sure what the venue is. So, I have emailed many people, and now I’m going to sleep. I was asked to call at 8.00 am.

Sinhala_Man / June 15, 2024
I think that this settles it:
.
https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxE9u-asmlGrGM2vJDlxJQVea691cBvebb
.
So Slough it is.
.
I had sent off an email copied BCC to many:
.
One response is already in (04:49, Lankan Time), with the sender being in the UK.
.
He says: “Slough is out of London but in the commuter belt. I would say 65-70% are migrants….mainly from South Asia …Pakistan, Indians and Sri lankans and other ethnic minorities…it is in Buckinghamshire.”
By train about 50 minutes from London Paddington Station or less if it is an intercity train. The venue may have been chosen as it is within the easy access from all parts of Greater London and the counties. The venue costs are cheaper with parking etc“.
.
That’s rational!

This is the most ridiculous article I ever read. The NPP is compared to Jesus of Nazareth? Really? Did Jesus murder people by chopping off their heads because they supported another political faction? Did Jesus issue orders to brutally gun down his opponents in broad daylight in front of their family members particularly young children brutalizing and traumatizing these children for the rest of their lives? Did Jesus preach a gospel of vicious hatred against those better off. Did he advocate the setting up of Kangaroo courts so the villagers can take revenge on whom ever they wanted? Did Jesus give the order to Shoot and execute a popular film star cum political activist until his head disintegrated in front of his wife and children. If that were so my dear Reverend then Jesus would be called a nasty scoundrel unworthy of our adoration. How dare you insult our lord with this kind of disgusting comparison. ~~~
There is an assumption here. That is, the Presidential Election will be held in 2024. It would be prudent to rewrite the above to read as follows:
~
“The evil status quo will try all kinds of tricks to divide, discredit and destroy the NPP, or worse not even allow it to test its popularity with the electorate by postponing the Presidential Election.”
~
I fear that until the election date has been formally and officially announced it is not a done deal.

When the Aragalaya first started there was some uncertainty about who was behind it. Eventually it was generally agreed that it was a popular uprising by the people against corrupt politicians.
.
Litter bins, phone charging points, drama productions, regular food deliveries, libraries, generators, clean water….all arranged by the masses who, at the best of times, can barely keep a street tidy? Hardly. The JVP were behind this efficiency. They admitted that their women and youth cadres were involved in, but were not leading, the protests.
.
This is a sign of things to come. If the JVP come to power they will be well organised and efficient, the way Gota was. In the honeymoon period of Government everything will seem wonderful. Then the NPP mask will slip. The ‘useful idiots’ will be discarded. Look at their website to read what they have in store for you.
.
I hope I am completely wrong.

“When the Aragalaya first started there was some uncertainty about who was behind it.”
Whoever was behind it, the NGOs hijacked much of the agenda. there were of course the paymasters involved.
But when protests took signs of a serious political turn, it was time to ditch it.
/
leelagemalli / June 11, 2024
Everyone jumped to give the birth certificate to the “struggle” because it was an unbiased and European-like protest.
But now it is becoming clear that the “Colombo rich class” led it from the beginning. Free food and drink were provided at the expense of those wealthy donors.
Those who lived in luxurious apartments in high-rises suffered without electricity and cooking gas.
They mushroomed and continued the protest “until Gotabhaya was kicked out of the country”. Later, many other political parties joined them. Then our stupid people were made to believe that it was an act of Antharaya – Hujja Kollo misled by Wasantha Mudalige.

Paul,
There is some misunderstanding about Gota. He himself said he did not want to be the President. He was forced to take the position after the Easter Attacks, as there was no better candidate to address the issue of national security. We can argue the fertilizer policy was a mistake, however, Gota was only President for 3 odd years. So the bankruptcy cannot be blamed on him alone. What were Ranil/Siri doing before that? External factors such COVID-19 also played a big role. Lastly, Gota still has the support of the military. That’s why he didn’t attack the “Aragalaya” protesters.
Regarding the “future”, there is some unknown with the NPP. Do they retain the status quo or turn against the IMF? That would cause Zimbabwe-style inflation and some kind of civil unrest, which the military could not contain. For the record, I am not a Ranil supporter. I prefer a stronger alliance with China.

What a MOCKERY and CONVOLUTED interpretation of FACTS pertaining to the Easter Sunday attack!!!???
There was NONE ELSE COMPETENT TO DEAL WITH, OR ENSURE NATIONAL SECURITY, the people 6.9 million gave their voted to the perpetrator – presumably the ARCHITECT also, of the Misdemeanour, (IF one decides to call it – murdering 250+ Lankans on Easter Sunday) their votes to make him the Head of State, Head of Government and EP!!???
IF THAT IS NOT FUNNY, THEN WHAT IS??? WE STAND UNITED and IN STOIC SILENCE to hear the verdict of the sovereign people AS TO WHY?? Welcoming any and all REASONS FOR SUCH DASTARDLY ACTION by erudite Sri Lankans, under the GUISE of national security protection!!???

The good Father doesn’t know his bible, according to him (a Jesuit no less) Jesus was against paying taxes to the Romans” Indirectly he told the people not to pay taxes to the Empire”
No he told the opposite -[ Mark 12:17 New King James Version (NKJV) And Jesus answered and said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at Him].
I think the Religious allusions he makes have no bearing on the Sri Lankan Political situation. How can a Christian cover up the killings perpetrated by the JVP in the past? Is this his idea of “turning the other cheek”? Or maybe the JVP gave him 30 pieces of Silver; the papal practice of asking payment—called “indulgences”—for the forgiveness of sins?
To tell a poor women at the end of her tether ( and ready to take to the streets) trying to feed her hungry children – “I tell them it is with great patience that people restrain themselves from doing that”.
You Father Chryso Peries SJ should be like Martin Luther and nail your thesis on the Parliament Building at Diyawanna instead of the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, calling out all the Corrupt Politicians. Maybe you should lead the people into Parliament and upset the Money-changer’s Tables (metaphorically).

Hello SM,
My comment wasn’t an ad hominem attack on the good Father, but a criticism of what he said in the article. One of my Brother in Law’s friends was murdered by the JVP here, near Welligala. There were more, but he personally witnessed this one. In any process of Truth and Reconciliation you first have to admit your guilt/responsibility and then offer your apologies and explain the steps to be taken to ensure that it cannot happen again. Has the JVP done this?
As Winston Churchill (and others) said “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. Are the Sri Lankan people doomed to a never ending cycle of violence and Civil War?

Hello LankaScot,
Churchill had quite a lot to say about Indians. He makes the anti-Indian Sinhalese look like tame rabbits.
“If Independence is granted to India, power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues, freebooters; all Indian leaders will be of low calibre and men of straw.”
Absolutely. India will never be a superpower. It will never catch up to China. It’s a casteist nightmare of corruption and filth.
“”India is no more a political personality than Europe. India is a geographical term. It is no more a united nation than the Equator.”
India lacks unity due to its multi-ethnicity. There are dozens of secessionist movements. It comes as no surprise that India cannot protect its borders, e.g. Kashmir and Sino-India.
“Hindus are a beastly people with a beastly religion”.
I don’t agree. But imagine if a Sinhalese made such a statement. People like “Leela” would be doing somersaults and screaming at the UN for an “international” investigation. And keep in mind, it was exactly Churchill’s class of people that governed Sri Lanka for 153 years. They spread their pernicious ideology in the Anglican schools and churches for the training of the Coolie ruling class.

Hello Lester,
I am no fan of Churchill or his “Black Dog”. The Mill Workers in Dundee chased him from City Square down to the Train Station, and he never returned. He didn’t like being heckled about Irish Nationalism and poverty. He told them he would see the grass grow through the factory floors. As usual the official story was different, in that he left by the back door of the Caird Hall to return to his hotel.
An older relative (in his 80s) told me his version in 1973 as he was active in the Labour Party in the 1920s when Churchill lost his Parliamentary Seat (Liberal Party). He told me he was part of the Crowd trying, unsuccessfully, to get into Caird Hall where Churchill was speaking.

In those days JVP spoke against Indianization.
Today’s Janata Vimukthi Peramuna talks highly about democratic values being overshadowed by Marxist ideologies. so what happened to them ? whom did they make fools ?
What happened to “consistency”?
Wimal Buruwan lowered his head before Rajapaksa thugs for his economic progress. There he abused his foul mouth fooling the citizens.
I had classmates who disappeared from their school lessons, only to be found trapped in “JVP lessons”.
Most of those who hold MBBS titles today do not even speak a word about the past.

The Pharisees did indeed collect tax from the people indirectly. The Romans paid for the Jewish King Herod and his Jewish 1%’s upkeep. There were Federal taxes which Jesus didn’t mind – the Roman taxes that built roads and aqueducts. The local taxes were what the Pharisees took in a devious way via the Temple, which mostly went to secure and upkeep of the 1% elite. They felt that only their 1% represented the real Israel…… Exactly what Sri Lanka is about!

Hello Ramona,
There are no contemporary documents that mention Jesus from the supposed time of his life. The nearest in time is the Jewish Scholar Josephus “Antiquities of the Jews”, writing in around 93/94 AD. There are 2 references to Jesus one of which has proved to be fake. The real one was in Book 20, Chapter 9 “the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James”. Not much about Taxes.

Hello Ramona,
“The Pharisees did indeed collect tax from the people indirectly” is a Malle Pol answer. It is also a “Straw Man” You answered a question that no-one asked or even asserted the opposite.
This is what the good Father said “Indirectly he told the people not to pay taxes to the Empire”
The Empire is Rome, Caesar is the Emperor . The Pharisees asked Jesus the Question “Is it lawful to give tribute to Cæsar, or not? Shall we give, or shall we not give?” To which he replied after obtaining a Coin “Render to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
It is as plain as day that the good Father is wrong, and so are you (indirectly 😉.

Not at all Malle Pol or Straw Man. Give facts, rather than being a Straw Man yourself and using a sort of ad hominin rather that debatable points to come to the truth.
–
Jesus told the Pharisees who refused to pay taxes to the Romans, to pay their taxes to the empire rather than heaping the burden onto the suffering Masses. See my replies below to Leonard. I’ll repeat them again:
/
ramona therese fernando / June 12, 2024
LankaScot : Those Pharisaical laws and imperial decrees did not come from thin air; they came with rabid taxation of the suffering Masses. The Pharisees also refused to pay to the Romans and left the suffering Masses to take the brunt. The Pharisees set themselves up as very rich people with untaxed business interests, and together with the Jewish kings (set up by the Romans), they ate up most of the taxes indirectly collected from the people and from money deviously collected by the Temple. A biblical and historical scholar like Fr. Chrisyo Peiris would know these things.
–
It’s very much like Sri Lanka nowadays with the IMF as the Romans. The Pharisees were the untaxed business owners. The Romans, like the IMF, did not care to interfere into how the taxes were collected… they too had the noninterference in local affairs policy for the benefit of their empire.
_
Jesus message in the end was about socialized taxation. When he said “Pay unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s,” he was telling the Pharisee who asked him the question to pay his taxes to the Romans.

Correct. If this cleric is incapable of understanding such a relatively simple and straightforward forward saying of Jesus, one shudders to think how defective must be his understanding of more challenging parts of the Bible!
People like this who misrepresent the Bible in support of their twisted politico-religious ideology are in truth enemies of God and Christianity.

“He [Jesus] was liberating people from slavery to pharisaical laws and imperial decrees.”
While Jesus condemned the unbiblical traditions of the Pharisees, he nowhere taught people to defy “imperial decrees.”
Jesus preached a gospel of spiritual redemption, not political. He had absolutely no interest in politics and once even escaped from a bunch of Jews who tried to make him their political king by force.

Hello Ramona,
This is exactly what I said.
The good Father said the opposite and you defended his position. And now you have done a “volte face” and agree with me and Leonard.
We all make mistakes and sometimes even change our minds. But we should be honest and admit doing so.
By the way you should read what Pope Francis said regarding the Pharisees and you will see why the good Father continues to demonise them. After the destruction of the 2nd Temple the Pharisees become the Rabbinical mainstream of the Jews and promote Judaism amongst the Diaspora.
Watch “Life of Brian” and you will see how they portray the various sects (Peoples Front of Judea etc.) and their use of casuistry in their discourses. Pope Francis does the same.

Nope! You never mentioned that Jesus told only the Pharisees,….. and no one but the Pharisees,….. to pay their taxes and not burden the suffering Jewish Masses with the Roman tax. That is very obvious!
–
You criticized the good Fr. when he said that Jesus indirectly told the people not to pay their taxes. You did not see it in the historical context of what Fr. Chryso meant : That Jesus wanted the rich to pay their taxes and not the poor. You were out of context in picking on Fr. Chryso. And you now write about the Pharisees only after I mentioned them. Not good.
/
ramona therese fernando / June 13, 2024
Indeed, that is one of the reasons the Pharisees wanted to crucify Jesus (besides calling himself the Son of God). With Jesus rousing up the masses against the non-payment of taxes by the Pharisees, Pharisees would have had to pay their taxes instead of heaping the yoke upon the suffering Masses. Anura KD will have to be very careful from now on, for the Lankan Elite will be out to do to him as what the Pharisees did to Jesus. 😢 May the protection of the divine Devas be upon him. 🙏🙏🙏

LankaScot / June 13, 2024
Hello Ramona,
“And you now write about the Pharisees only after I mentioned them. Not good”
Ramona we studied the Bible as Schoolchildren through to our teenage years and sometimes later. The Gospels especially were thoroughly dealt with. Do you think that I am unaware that the Pharisees asked him questions, he was continually engaging in debates with them. When Judas betrayed him he asked the Priests “I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.” Jesus was probably an ex Pharisee, but definitely Jewish.
By the way DTG is far better qualified than me to engage you in debates about Christianity and Biblical references. Please remember that the New Testament was written at various times and by various Authors (Human ones and Humans are fallible) up to the end of the 2nd Century. it was not compiled into a collection called the New Testament until the 3rd and 4th century CE.

Dear LankaScot,
.
There is much that I’m grateful to you for, but you quote the words of Jesus from the NKJV. I don’t now read the Bible often, but when I do, I go to the 1611 Version – the only worthwhile version for me. I have heard the passage in Sinhala, and even “overheard” it in Tamil, without understanding.
.
Jesus wouldn’t have understood any of this. He’s supposed to have spoken Aramaic.
.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramaic
.
Let’s stop squibbling! When Jesus was asked that question, an attempt was being made to trap him. Whatever the version, it is claimed that Jesus was clever enough to overcome the trap.
.
But did Jesus even live?
.
We must be grateful to Fr. Pieris, for not acting here as a Jesuit Priest. I’m sure that he foresaw all our silly arguments, and may now be smiling – or crying!

Hello SM,
Nothing is ever simple. Old English is totally different from Modern English.Try reading the first lines of Beowulf –
“Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum,
þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon,
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon.
Oft Scyld Scefing sceaþena þreatum,”
English (Middle English) as we know it began probably around the time of Chaucer (14th Century) but is still difficult to read –
“Whan that the Knight had thus his tale y-told,
In al the route nas ther yong ne old
That he ne seyde it was a noble storie,
And worthy for to drawen to memorie”
So all modern translations of Ancient Texts are more than likely approximations.
Not much difference between the 1611 Version, which we were taught at school, and the New King James Version. Here is the Archaic English 1611 quote “And Iesus answering, said vnto them, Render to Cesar the things that are Cesars: and to God the things that are Gods. And they maruailed at him”
The good Father uses the examples of the Buddha and Jesus to bolster his arguments for voting NPP. If he mangles/distorts historical texts to do this, then he has to be taken to task.

In countries like Sri Lanka, a significant challenge lies in the pervasive fixation on labels, brands, and political affiliations, often at the expense of objective evaluation of performance. Rather than blindly adhering to partisan loyalties, it is imperative to assess actual outcomes and prioritize decisions that benefit not just individuals, but the nation as a whole.
The alarming extent of this trend is exemplified by laws restricting presidential candidacy to only Sinhala Buddhists, a form of discrimination that prioritizes superficial characteristics over merit and capability.
Such disparities undermine the principle of equality among citizens. Similarly, the persistence of unwavering support for political parties, regardless of their shortcomings, perpetuates a cycle of stagnation. Despite recent positive developments under the current government led by RW, it is essential to reflect on past experiences, such as the detrimental consequences of electing inexperienced leaders solely based on rhetoric.
Sustainable progress demands a departure from partisan rhetoric and a commitment to evidence-based governance for the advancement of Sri Lanka.

HT,
“The alarming extent of this trend is exemplified by laws restricting presidential candidacy to only Sinhala Buddhists, “
There are no explicit statutes to this end, but the Buddhist clergy make sure that the end result is the same. Caste used to be a factor too, as R. Premadasa found when the Mahanayakas tried to deny him entry to the Pattirippuwa to be sworn in as President.

Dear Fr. Chryso Pieris SJ,
.
In response to your essay, I must express my disagreement regarding the assertion that the NPP solely spearheaded the Aragalaya movement in 2022, making them the sole trustworthy party today. It is important to clarify that Aragalaya was driven by ordinary citizens who were not aligned with any specific political party. These individuals, irrespective of their ethnicity, religion, caste, or creed, were motivated by a shared dissatisfaction with governance and injustice. Their collective action was fueled by a desire for systemic change, unencumbered by partisan affiliations. It is concerning that the narrative seems to have shifted over time, with the implication that the NPP deserves sole credit for the movement’s success. In reality, it was the unity and determination of diverse citizens that propelled Aragalaya forward. It is essential to recognize and honor the contributions of all those who participated in advocating for change, rather than attributing success to any single entity.

Who were the unwelcome forces ? Why Ranil ? Was this the
outcome Aragalaya expected ? Has Aragalaya voiced its satisfaction
over the outcome ? There are question that are not answered so far
and until then nobody can identify the real cause behind the Hero

The Tamil newspaper Kalai Kathir reported that Anura Kumara had declared the policy on the ethnic issue to be that the JVP will implement the 13th Amendment fully and then explore further a permanent solution through a new constitution. This is an acceptable solution. So, one objection, I stated earlier has been removed. Now we await the detailed policy on how to solve the economic crisis. I am sure there will be progress on this. When this happens, the credibility of the JVP as an alternative will be more than established.
