On March Threat Geneva: There Is Only One Strategy

By Tamara Kunanayakam

Tamara Kunanayakam

Tamara Kunanayakam

On my return to Sri Lanka yesterday after several months outside, I learned with much astonishment about recent media reports claiming that I am engaged in discussions with officials on my re-appointment as PR to Geneva. The falsity of the claim and its malicious character compel me to respond.

The reports refer to instructions given by the President to certain officials to meet and discuss with me arrangements for my re-appointment to Geneva as Permanent Representative to the United Nations. It claims that I have expressed “reservations” “due to short time span between now and the Geneva sessions to be held in March.”

At no time was I contacted or consulted by any Government official on this or on any other matter, related or otherwise, since my departure from the diplomatic service in July 2012.

Even when I was on the frontline in Geneva, and at the best of times, the Ministry of External Affairs chose to ignore me; at the worst, it sought to obstruct me from carrying out my functions! In preparation for the battle, I was severely reprimanded for travelling to Colombo to seek a briefing on the strategy to be adopted at the Human Rights Council. Afterwards, the Ministry sought no debriefing and no information on my experience in Geneva, my opinion, or my analysis!

The practice of the ruling class to disseminate misleading information for personal gain has resulted in the nation being deluded about the real threats and their origin, so that its destiny is slowly slipping away from democratic control and being transferred to external forces.

We are on the brink of overt external intervention today and unilateral sanctions that will primarily affect the ordinary citizen, because those in positions of responsibility have failed to draw the political lessons from the strategy of defeat adopted by certain important members of the Sri Lankan delegation to the Human Rights Council in March 2012 and the ensuing debacle. A betrayal from within the ranks transformed a near victory into an overnight defeat.

More importantly, and for reasons unknown, those in charge of foreign policy have chosen to ignore the lessons from Sri Lanka’s undeniable victory at the September 2011 session of the Council, when we succeeded in forcing the US and its allies to withdraw the draft resolution that would have otherwise placed Sri Lanka on the international agenda in 2011! That single most important victory at the Human Rights Council continues to be hidden from the public, as the success achieved by Ambassador Dayan Jayatilleke in 2009 to ward off imminent external intervention continues to be denigrated.

On several occasions, I have tried to expose the veritable reasons for US intervention in Sri Lanka and its strategic objectives, recalling the threat “We’ll get you next time!” that was flung in my direction by the US Ambassador for Human Rights in Geneva, when Washington was forced to withdraw the draft resolution against Sri Lanka in September 2011. Despite the obvious, some have thought it clever to deliberately underestimate the gravity of US actions in the Human Rights Council, with an important representative of our country even calling for a strategic alliance with Washington, including military!

A foreign policy driven by personal gain rather than national interest and collective vision, has led to vacillations that have brought ridicule to the country and a significant loss of credibility, internationally. After first defending Navi Pillay by publicly denouncing me for having exposed the detrimental role played by her Office in violation of its multilateral mandate, the same officials then engaged in a campaign of denigration and provocation against the person of Navi Pillay, taking care, however, not to criticise Washington’s instrumentalisation of her Office. Not once was the responsibility and strategy of the US put into question! No self-respecting sovereign nation has cowed down as Sri Lanka has done to the constant humiliation suffered by its people, its government and representatives, and to insults hurled at them.

Washington’s determination to condemn Sri Lanka, force a regime change, and obtain a foothold in this strategically vital region, was never taken into account politically by the ruling class. It comes as no surprise that panic has taken over, and false stories abound as those responsible for Sri Lanka’s growing loss of sovereignty and independence seek cover behind new scapegoats! Under the circumstance, it is not farfetched to question the real motivations of those disseminating false claims about discussions supposedly taking place between certain officials and myself!

I have not changed my opinion!

I remain convinced that there is only one strategy to counter the imperialist threat:

(1) unite the patriotic forces within the country, irrespective of ethnic origins and differences in religion and language;

(2) arm the country with the means necessary to conduct an independent foreign policy through economic and financial policies that render it independent of imperialist pressures;

(3) adhere in fact, not just in rhetoric, to the principle of genuine non-alignment;

(4) build a united international front with our natural allies, based on common interests.

These are the basic principles that should guide Sri Lanka’s foreign policy. Without respect for these principles, no representative of the country, whoever he or she is, will be able to defend the interests of the Sri Lankan people and country!

We are told that it is too late to change course between now and March. I disagree! There is an alternative, but it demands political will and honesty!

Tamara Kunanayakam was and is a true asset to Sri Lanka.

Exactly the reason why she was obstructed by self-serving, political scoundrel that occupy Sri Lanka’s MEA right now.

We will see consequences in March 2014. Sri Lanka will pay the price.

Tamara is real thamasha, just like Dayan the Great, they have bloated egos.
Sri Lanka state cannot be saved in its form: She is talking about getting all ethnic groups together to confront the West. She must be thinking of the Colombo elite.

What is Sri Lanka is going through is karma for what they have done to Tamils and continuing to do. Tamara may not or pretend not to know the oppression of Tamils going on after acute genocide in 2009.

Selfish egoistic people from Colombo live in their cookoo world.

        Sky-earth difference with DJ…
TK is not comparable to him. DJ has been trying to get posted while this grand lady is focusing on her job.. She has not joined making unnecessary analysis seeking to get posted. There I respect her that much. All what she has been making clear is imperative at this critical juncture of lanken politics.

Ben Hurling, Tamara is a talented diplomat no doubt yet she was dancing for the tunes of Mara and clan for her supper. She has been dictated by pinheads and nitwits, she gave in gladly.
For any good diplomats working with this blunt regime is like ‘Blind leading the blind.
Its so sad that the avarage public cannot realise the danger that this regime is making to this country. Its appalling that there is no one to make the general public understand what would be the consequences because of this regime’s obdurate and stubborn ego.
Over 90% media personals have been bribed in different ways. thus kept them shut. Code of conduct? Basic ethics?? Moral???

Tamara may have collected a few degrees but diplomacy is certainly not one of them. No diplomat has ever ranted and raved so much and given more interviews to sycophantic websites and newspapers than Tamara Kunanayakam. MR did her a huge favour way beyond what she deserved in her ad hoc appointment in 2011 bypassing senior diplomats due to some personal reasons (an open secret).

I don’t agree with many things that MR does but removing this woman I can agree to a certain extent. I would have fully agreed if MR called her back and fired her. Her attitude was unbecoming of a diplomat.

You are talking about ad hoc appointment to Tamara in UN. Why are you silent about loads and loads of political appointments to foreign service over over qualified and trained. They will make the whole country to pay for this soon.

AVB,Thats because people are always looking for complex solutions to simple problems. Most problems originate due to lack of fairness in dealing with others.Fairness coupled with firmness can solve most problems.Unfortunately people make the excuse that it is not a fair world anyway so we can also join the bandwagon too without a twinge of conscience because others are doing the wrong thing too.

The sinhalese are always looking externally for threats without putting things right internally and focusing there on the root causes of the problems. There is no fairness even among them too and constant fighting and backstabbing as a result of that.

What about better governance, an independent judiciary, full implementation of the LLrc recommendations, respect for human rights etc. Rajapaksa has already united all sinhala Buddhist patriotic forces and they are attacking the tamils, Muslims and Christians.
You are a vile and heartless tamils woman doing your best to protect the mass murdered of your fellow tamils. You have no compassion for the thousands of tamils butchered by the Rajapaksa regime. I am thrilled at your present discomfort and I hope you suffer worse. Your piece above is about self pity and you spew venom at your previous masters but, despite your education and intelligence, you failed to realise that you were serving a bunch of thugs and criminals who wouldn’t think twice about dropping you into the shit hole for their own failures.

Your rant against the US and imperialism belongso to a bygone age. Go back and live in Castro’s paradise and dream about socialism fight against imperialism for the rest of your life. Rajapaksa is rapidly going down the slope to becoming the Hitler of Asia and he ain’t gonna listen to a bloody para demala’s advice. Just get lost. We have heard enough of and from you. Good bye, suckered.

Tamara may have not stood by the terrorist eelam project but she did stand by when the 18th amendment was passed.
She like Dayan (as I have stated many times previously) defended this regime who slaughtered Lasantha….silenced Iqbal…… coincidently TODAY marks 4 YEARS since Prageeth Eknaligoda went missing…..interesting that she wants a medium to “express” herself though she stood by and supported a regime that took that right away from many.

          Dev,

          Nope. Not at all.

Unlikely she would be happy with any of above mentioned crimes of Rajapassa clan.

But, she is smart enough to discern between internal and external threats to Sri Lanka.

          Cheers!

        Hi Ben,

She didn’t stand by any one before the war ended and I didn’t stand with the LTTE either. Tamara was an obscure diplomat stationed in Castro’s hell hole, Cuba, who the war criminal Rajapaksa used (abused) to try and defend himself at the UNHRC – her qualifications were that she was an educated and articulate Rajapaksa sycophant who was also a tamil willing to sell her soul in defending the murderer of people of her very own race. She failed miserably because the crimes of the Rajapaksa regime were and remain undefendable. The way she was treated by the regime after she failed to win the vote shows us how Rajapaksa uses people – tamils, Sinhalese, muslims – to his benefit and discards them afterwards. This is the story of sycophants everywhere who defend dictators and, sadly for her, this so called educated woman failed to see what was coming to her. She was a real sucker. She needs to disappear from the scene and fight her own out of mode fight against imperialism. I am surprised that she hasn’t realised that communism and socialism are long dead and buried. Tamara, a patriot – my foot. If she was a true patriot of Sri Lanka she would be fighting to remove Rajapaksa from power and not defend him.

her very own race‘ is the term used. Hah, the racist card is coming out asual. Then we have to check her caste before we get close to her
          .
This is the chosen race, which has to live in the ExclusiveTamil homeland. Such exclusive places were also set up under “apartheid”. Tamara prefers to live in Geneva,- much better than Scarborough- no doubt சந்தேகமின்றி

      Piranha ,

You really hammered her good, she deserves it:

She is like Kathirkamar: A Tamil opportunist out to boost her personal gains. Now she is dropped like a hot potato.

They want to take on the most powerful nation on Earth, who and its allies create world order.

Good luck to godfather Mahinda, Gotcha and his cronies!

Dear Ms Kunanayakam, I read with interest what you describe as the ‘only one strategy to counter the imperialist threat’. I am saddened to note that having been within the inner circles of power and having first hand experience of how these things work in Colombo, you did not feel that it was important to add 1. Honesty in purpose and 2. Integrity in action; to your recipe. Are we honestly pursuing a path aimed at creating a united Sri lanka which ALL its people can refer to as ‘Home’? and do we have the integrity to stick to these principles when confronting the stark ground reality – racisim and bigotry wins votes?

Without these two ingredients no amount of window dressing is going to heal the wounds of Sri Lanka and all its people. This is not a question of who can articulate the lies ‘cleverly’ using good languistic skills……it is about whether what we say is backed by honesty and integrity in our dealings with our own people and the rest of the world. You are beginning to sound increasingly like minister WW when you beat you chest with your brand of ‘patriotism’ against the ‘Imperialists’
Good luck in your efforts – whatever they are.

      Mahesh Nirmalan,

      Well articulated. Agree with you.

Unfortunately, hypocrisy is the most important institution in international diplomacy. Tamara cannot change that.

As a diplomat for Sri Lanka she defended her country the best she could.

Settling scores with corrupt, racist Rajapassa clan is a different battle. That must be waged as well. But, it is whole different ball game.

      Cheers!

Oh that’s right, we are also passing on the leadership from the king to the prince, the 18th Amendment saw to that……

Also, Dayan thanks you for singing his praises I sure (he will repay the favour in his next article).

Going by the track record of the “Liberal Party” of Rajiva’s recent activities, I am sure they will organize a seminar for you as well.

Here is a woman who has been stooging the Rajapakses for so long talking as if she were a pristine pure virgin, who is going to sock it to the West. Did she not know that she was serving a perfidious set of tyrants when she was representing the war criminals in Geneva and suggesting that they had not committed any human rights violations.Absolutely despicable, now she pretends to be the new Joan of Arc with a plan to combat the West. Honest is what she prescribes and it is what she lacks. She is best confined to the rubbish heap of other former sycophants trying hard to make a comeback.

In a previous avatar,Tamara, as a member and interventionist of the World Christian Students Federation, functioned as a vociferous critic of sri lanka’s abysmal human rights record at the earlier UN Human Rights Commision.
She quoted a long record of numan rights violations in sri lanka,at the Commission.

Later, after she met Mahinda Rajapakse and accepting his offer to make her a sri lankan diplomat, she became an ardent defender of the Rajapakse Regime – the President cleverly recruited her to silence her effective propaganda against HR violations.

Now she has learned her bitter lesson – and deserves same.

Tamara was once a sympathiser of what the LTTE stood for. She was brought in like a woman who had been hired to beat her breasts and moan at a funeral when the relatives of the deceased wished to take a rest, because she bears a Tamil name. The lesson she has now learnt from the Rajapaksa regime is not surprising and is well deserved.Bensen

But how do you recognize a “Tamilian”? Do they have a different blood group? Do they have different chromosomes? Or do they live in the “exclusive” homeland? Or do they just live in Colombo, defend the LTTE, talk about Genocide (not by the tigers?), but hold power or land in the North? If you look at the TNA MPs, all except 2 live in the Colombo area? May be we should sent such hypocrites to Geneva, together with Sajin Vas, Samarasinghe, Duminda and others, and bring back Tamara?

None of these “experts” are able to tell us what the worst case scenario will be should the maximum penalty be imposed on Sri Lanka.

Without information on that score, the urgency or the importance for action can never be conveyed.

Can some one – Dayan, Tamara, Rajiva or even G.L. tell us what can / will be done to us as a nation ?

This rhetoric warning of dire consequences is also of the same caliber as what the Government is saying. Meaningless to the layman !

  • 2
    3

I agree with Tamara because the current ethnic problem is the continuation of Thatchar-Reagan axis politics.

LTTE and Eelam were created in London and imported to Sri Lanka.

LTTE hunted down the leftists among Tamils in their first round of Killing episodes. Then they went behind the pro-Indian elements in Sri lanka.

LTTE never had any political manifesto. LTTE followed what ever the UNP did in the South. Later UNP and LTTE had their honey moon.

Now Mahinda defeated the pro-Western terrorism in Sri lanka. The Sinhala elites don’t realize the real threats from the West. Now they use the Catholic Criminals to seduce Mahinda because of his Catholic connections.

Tamils have no policy and barking at her for nothing. They vote Fonseka and cry about war crimes at the same time. UNP morons are now running behind the Sambanthan gangs because they think the UK/USA will come and hang Mahinda.

Tamara is an asset to Sri Lanka but people and hooligans never realize the real designs of the West. India is the main target of the West. They killed many Indian leaders under different pretexts and brought some weak people to power. That is why USA strip searched a diplomat. That is a provocation to check the Indian people. These kind of “rowdyism” is called American democracy and the Tamil/UNP morons want the same.

Tamara, Kathirkamar, Karuna, Douglas like people are good assets to Sri Lanka because they are good to the strategy of Sinhala Buddhist Fundamentalist idea of Sinhala only Buddhist Nation. In reality they are against unity of the people, the fundamental rights of the people but in support of crimes against humanity and genocide of Tamils.

It is like a good lawyer defending a rapist or cold blooded murderer of his sister in the court of justice just for money.

I am puzzled at why Tamara still has to protect those who harassed and scuttled her work in Geneva.
Does she still seriously believe Sri Lanka can be defended in Geneva come next march. No way. The US has already bought, paid, bribed and threatened for all the votes they need.
What can a vote against Sri Lanka achieve. Sanction from a coalition of the willing(not UN)!
Then again, if they want to do that, why hang around for so long.
So, what they are doing in fact is to scare us in to doing what they want with out the sanctions.
They also know sanctions is not a very effective tool in the long run.
Besides sanctions against the country will put TNA between a rock and hard a place.
So, Is an overt attempt at regime change and establishment of Eelam in the offing?

Don’t worry about TNA. You should worry about your country, your government and your people.

Tamara kumari is a spent force, she can do nothing more defending this miracle of Asia regime anymore. She and Dayan J have only one policy. Save your skin, get back your position and perks. MR knows what to do with these spent forces. He just ignores them until he needs them again. Their use is not necessary anymore. Tamara is left out in the cold by all. Defending a murderous government is not patriotism. These low lives needs money, perks and power. They just don’t care about what they are doing. MR used her well and as usual discarded. She should have known him better than others, since she was a good pal of MR. You were never honest about anything so go suffer , Join Dayan J and cry foul…all the way… You poor thing !

    Tamara Kunanayakam….?
I think she belongs to the Jaffna Thamil elites. Who have no grip of the Thamil question. Her mother is a Sinhalese I presume. She seems to have a Sinhala “look”,and not the typical “Jaffna Look!.How many of the ordinary Thamil and Sinhale folks can read and understand what Tamara says?I think a sinhala and Thamil translation should be published simultaneously.
