Only Sinhala-Buddhist-Catholic Votes: Anatomy Of A Tribal Democracy

By Sarath de Alwis –

Sarath de Alwis

“He who can make an exception is sovereign” ~ Carl Schmitt in 1922

The pen was once mightier than the sword. In the age of the smart phone the tongue has taken over. The point of departure of this essay is digital electioneering amidst social distancing.

Thanks to the smartphone, behavior tends to leave behind digital footprints.

Covid-19 has substantially altered the cacophony of the electoral process. The main contenders have made a definite, meaning full switchover to digital campaigning, micro targeting and online mobilization.

About twelve years ago I got a PC – not the black coated variety now overspreading in Hulftsdorp. It is something called a personal computer.

It was a maddening contraption which compelled my daughter Rashmi to gift me a clever compendium on how to get the basics right in the digital world. It was most appropriately called “Understanding Computers – a handbook for the perfect idiot”

Thanks to that early fortuitus happening I have followed the current electioneering process on YouTube, Facebook and most significantly on WhatsApp. (Twitter eludes me still. I still cannot deal with ATMs. I fill a form and operate a savings account with a passbook.)

The viral constraints on public rallies – humongous swarms of humans has compelled political parties and candidates to focus on YouTube and most enjoyably one on one interviews.

It has produced a number of inquisitors who represent different political shades. My favorite is the bearded baldhead.

Clearly, the ruling party ‘Pohottuwa’ commands the digital advantage. They have been in the business for more than three years. They have the digital resource advantage both official and unofficial. The others are catching up. Thanks to the Elections Commission since the announcement of the date of elections some levelling of the playing field is thinly discernible.

I oppose the policies of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. But that opposition does not diminish my capacity to make a rational assessment. Gotabaya is a very popular product.

There is a strong conviction amongst a large swathe of the populace that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will take the right call for the country.

I think they are wrong. That is my opinion. I cannot prove them wrong. Only time will tell.

Time is always telling. Time never stops telling. But we don’t listen. Only when we are kicked in the derrière that we blame time for not telling it loud enough.

There is the world of reality. There is the world of fantasy. What separates the two is the wall of fallacy. You cannot attack the false while you are mired in fallacy.

Mangala Samaraweera has a point. I don’t know what he will do next. But he got out of a charade – meaningless and futile.

We must not confuse our choices. There is always a good choice and there is always a better choice. Then there is the best choice which we will not have during my lifetime because clientelist politics is too entrenched.

Politics is not about who does what but who gets what and how much and how fast.

In this parliamentary election the ‘Pohottuwa’ has leveraged digital technology to brand a single product – the President defender of the faith under whose benign guidance we will glimpse “vistas of prosperity and splendor”.

Neither Anurakumara’s promise of integrity nor Sajith Premadasa’s capacity to bleed for the have-nots present a viable alternative government.

If they on other hand wanted to preserve the democratic gains and arrest our slide into an autocratic rule, why are they contesting each other?

There is the ‘Peratrugami’ left  fighting the Vimukthikami left. On the liberal democratic circus, the ‘Samagi’ party is fighting the ‘Eksath’ party.

All these well-meaning people have failed to tell voters what needs telling. If they vote for the thug, the extortionist, the child molester, the smuggler, the fraudster they are in reality declaring their own oneness with those despicable deeds.

On YouTube I watched the Chili powder dispenser pleading self-defense. The chap who started off with a suburban communication center assured on YouTube that he possessed no tangible assets and that his current affluent home was the result of his good wife making lucky breaks in her business ventures.

Cynical mockery of obvious truths can no longer be dismissed as unfortunate gaffes that time would repair. The digital records will continue to haunt them but that will be only if the other side has the creative will to not let them forget.

The internet is a great instrument for citizen participation in democracy. The digital platform can either promote decency and truth or assault decency and subvert truth.

Recently I received a video clip on WhatsApp. It showed two young ladies engaged in passionate canvassing at the doorstep of a woman voter.

The conversation runs like this.

We have come here not to promise you anything. We will not tell you that we will give you this or that. We have come to tell you that we must send a ‘Sinhalaya’ to speak on behalf of the Sinhala people. You will know about the national movement started by the late ‘Soma Hamuduruwo’. This is a person who was in it from its very inception. He was a ‘pioneer’ in the struggle to bring the President in to that high office. Then, the lady dressed in a smart saffron blouse pronounces the exotic Sinhala name of the candidate and says emphatically ‘we want only Sinhala Buddhist Catholic votes. Why? Because we strongly oppose Muslim extremism. We also oppose Tamil separatism. We want to a send a ‘Sinhalaya’ to parliament to speak for the Sinhalese.

Then she says the preference number of the candidate is number two. His ‘Jathiya’ is number one.

I leave the reader to make sense out of the sales pitch of the young lady on behalf of the Sinhala nationalist candidate. The video clip speaks for itself. Her quaint appeal for Sinhala Buddhist Catholic votes contains another phenomenon. The Sinhala Buddhist Catholic hybrid is an ethicized identity marker. It excludes non-Sinhala Catholics. It is an exciting avenue to be explored by scholars of social anthropology.

This is what I fear about this brand of political patriotism. There is nothing wrong with benign patriotism. As Yuval Noah Harari points out in his ’21 Lessons for the 21st Century’ there is indeed nothing wrong with patriotism. Every nation claims to be unique. Indeed, they are so. The problem begins when patriotism morphs into chauvinistic ultra-nationalism. Instead of claiming my nation is unique the candidate seems to have persuaded his supporters that their nation is supreme.

As Harari points out, when a thousand people believe a narrative or a story for one month it is called fake news. When a billion people believe it for a thousand years it earns the sanctity of religion. “We are admonished not to call it fake news in order not to hurt the feelings of the devout and faithful.

For better or worse fiction is among the most effective tools in humanity’s toolkit.

The world is what it is. It is not something we chose. It is a place where we must live, like it or not. And we must live with the lady in the saffron blouse in the video clip and her candidate.

This is all about the parliamentary election. In this election we must decide what we can do together and what we can do apart from each other.

All virtue is rooted in truth. Authoritarianism begins when we cannot sperate truth from what is appealing now. The citizen who disputes truth beckons to tyranny.

When fascism says, ‘the people’ it means ‘some people.’ Fascism is the art of persuading people to follow a leader who undertakes to protect them from a non-existing enemy.

The fertile ground for fascism is a society riddled with inequality. In such a disturbingly dystopian society the miserable poor find truth to be too much to comprehend. The vulgarly rich find truth to be of too little consequence.

These ladies did not say they oppose Muslims and Tamils. They said they oppose ‘MUSLIM EXTREMISM’ and ‘TAMIL SEPERATISM’.
There is nothing wrong with what they said because Sinhalayo suffered because of Muslim extremist terrorists and Tamil separatist terrorists. Furthermore, Sinhalayo do not like descendants of Dravida laborers trying to break the Land of Sinhalayo and Vedda Eththo based on a bogus claim ‘Traditional Homeland’.

In this country Tamils can tell Tamil people to vote for a Tamil and Muslims can tell Muslim people to vote for a Muslim. No problem with that. But if a Sinhala person tell Sinhala people to vote for a Sinhala person that is ‘TRIBALISM’, ‘RACISM’.

“Why? Because we strongly oppose Muslim extremism. We also oppose Tamil separatism.”

      Eagle,
In the first place, is there such a thing as a “Sinhala person”? How do you recognize them? Because they have names like Silva, Fernando or Nanayakkara? Because they wear a Portuguese kalisama? I am curious.

        old codger,
If a man does not have ‘Thala Thel’ smell and have the tip, he is a Sinhala man. If a woman does not have ‘Thala Thel’ smell and not subjected to genital mutilation she is a Sinhala woman.

Kalisama was invented by Chinese. Europeans copied it.

          Eagle,
“a man does not have ‘Thala Thel’ smell and have the tip, he is a Sinhala man “
So, by your definition any Punjabi , Bengali, or Chinese is a Sinhala man. You have enlightened me, thank you so much.

Why do you smell of shit when you talk ? is it because you are talking through your kalu puke ? Eelam also known as Serendib , Ceylon , sri lanka is an island that belongs to the Australoid Dravidians or Nagas as you may call them. In the modern terminology the word Nagas mean Tamils. You Sinhala kallathonis arrived from Orissa / Bangal washed ashore after floating on the bay of Bengal for months.

you and people like you are barking at the top of your voices spewing obscenities against the Tamils because you damn well know that your race is an inferior race of mongrels from Bangladesh who has usurped the country from the rightful owners the Tamils also known as Nagas , dravidas !!!

              Eagle P

You don’t belong here in Lanka, go to your homeland Bangladesh where your ethnic cousins and the other beggars like you live. Tell the international community that the Tamils who live just 18 miles away from the nearest point to Eelam ( who were until recently connected to this island by land ) are outsiders compare to the Bengali illegals washed ashore on this island by chance from 2000 miles away. How illogical the claim you make for our country , our motherland Lanka as yours sounds .No wonder your race is known as a race of fools ( modayas ) all over the world.

You deserve a place in the nearest lunatic Asylum, Which is nearest to you Angoda or mulleriyawa ? Go there and seek treatment for your delusions and hallucinations. when you are cured you will realise it is not your country but is the Land of the Tamils which your people have been occupying illegally for 2500 years and it is about time you left and went back to Bangladesh the land of your fore bears. Good riddance

      Mahindapala/eagle eye
Who is a Sinhala Budhist Catholic?
We have Sinhala Budhists like Mahinda Rajapakse; Catholics like Shiranee Rajapakse But who is new breed called Sinhala Budhist Catholic? Does people like Namal Rajapakse qualify for this breed? Or is it a new breed created by Cardinal Malcolm when he said Srilanka is a Sinhala Budhist Country His folks who are Catholics in a Sinhala Budhist country qualify to be called Sinhala Budhist Catholics? What will the Vatican say?? Cardinal Malcolm is not a Vatholic Cardinal but Sinhala Budhist Catholic cardinal, Have to wait and see. Or you have an answer to it Mahindapala? BTW Do your children qualify as members of this new breed???

I thought EAGLE eye is not that Mahindapala, after Old codger confirmed it here x times.

I din’t know old codger confirmed that the two ( Eagle eye and Mahindapala) are not the same. I don’t know the basis of old codger’s confirmation ( if he has actually done so). But from reliable sources my understanding is that Eagle eye is one and the same racist Mahindapala who is married to a Tamil ( DEMULA IN HIS WORDS) woman from the Eastern Province and they are living off Australian Government hand outs in Melbourne,

How reliable are the reliable sources?

              SJ
I have no objection for people to live on state pension. What Mahindapala receives is not pension. To be eligible for a pension in any country , you must have worked and paid income tax in that particular country. Whereas if you receive any money from a country because you went there as a refugee, then it is not pension . It is a hand out .
I am not nasty , only stating facts. Even EE will agree with it.
BTW, my sources are reliable as the earth goes round the sun.

As, SJ says, the analysis is based on writing style. Don’t forget that HLDM was a Lake House editor in the 90’s and often writes under his own name. He is a Peradeniya English graduate, and it shows in his writing, unlike EE.
I have the impression that EE is a smart guy pretending to be dumb.

The terrible Easter bomb blasts in churches have turned out to benefit the Rajapaksa’s quite well. Within days of those attacks, GR announced his candidacy, as a frightened nation turned to them, as expected, and his supported sky rocketed. Talk about convenient timing.

I always respect Mr. Sarath de Alwis,
He represent a vanishing tribe of impartial opinion writers/thinkers.
    .
People of that caliber keeps forgetting that…..
    1. Human society is not digital. It’s analog. People don’t think in zeros and ones. They take decisions based on feelings.. beliefs.
    2. A people’s representative does not need to be a PhD holder. “The Chili powder dispenser” may be a good politician than Professor A.V. Suraweera. Obviously R. Premadasa is more capable politician than Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“Obviously R. Premadasa is more capable politician than Ranil Wickremesinghe.”

Of course R Premadasa is more capable than self proclaimed Strongman Gota as this war criminal is unable to run the country with civilian administrators alone instead he has to replace all of them with his “aye aye, sir” men.

R Premadasa had the b***s to admit his party members were responsible for burning down the Jaffna Library whereas Gota is scared to death admitting responsibility for war crimes, crimes against humanity, human rights violations. If R Premadasa too committed all these violations then of course at that time death squads were operated by Fonseka, Rajapaksa, Pereras, …..

Any leader or party that has policies based on racism, and wants to win in such a divisive way, does not have the best interests of our country. No true leader wants the country they govern over, divided and in disarray, unless they have ulterior motives, and use religion, or caste, as a tool to win, and set one citizen against the other.

Every time it it election time in Sri Lanka, racism raises it’s ugly head, especially when it comes to the Rajapaksa’s. Without the frequent bursts of anti Muslim attacks, at this crucial time, when stories of charmed sweets, Muslims taking over the country, doctors making women sterile in a large hospital, wanda pethi’s, and protests demanding Muslims only have only 2 children (do they think this is China?) the pre-election campaign is not complete, as the Rajapaksa’s fear they cannot win ONLY on their “merits”. Having token Muslims in your government will not convince many you are not racist. Actions speak louder than words. Building your authoritarian government by hurting the minority only shows your disregard for human rights.

Vote for politicians who are NOT racists. We need to be united to progress as a country. We need a strong opposition who will speak for all. The Rajapaksa’s are playing the racist card again.

“Time is always telling. Time never stops telling. But we don’t listen. Only when we are kicked in the derrière that we blame time for not telling it loud enough. “

    I like that Sarcasm.

Time tells us; we try to listen; our ability is limited because we learned Sinhala Only (or Tamil only or Arabic only); we are kept away from learning the language of the time, the wisdom. We learned, without leaning from wises’ words, how to put back our words into their mouths. We believe in religion, as well as democracy. If a 7 million votes for, he/she is a president of virtue. If 17 Million teaches, then it is the religion Buddha (Siva, Allah).
Eelam Tamils in diaspora lands remind me how quickly to forget an antique religion, provided no economic benefits and how quickly be converted to a new religion if it establishes social status; surprisingly still, the both, antique and the modern are Siva taught original Hinduisms. Muslim women are forced change their fashion to be timely in time with the time. With his own life, the Telugu Nayakar Solomon West Ridgeway Dias brought in Sinhala Only. With the life of 150,000 innocent Tamil lives, Old King brought in Sinhala only Buddhism.

Authoritarianism is already started. The consequences of authoritarianism is much worse than Sinhala racism and Buddhist fundamentalism. This is a new development in the world. I can’t see anywhere in the world all three joined together. It is not a healthy development. When all three combines together you can expect a complete disaster. Sinhala Sri Lanka cannot exist as a sole country in the world. Authoritarians never thinks of consequences for others. Hitler, Mussolini, Sadam, Gadaffi all had same outcome which resulted millions of deaths. If Sinhala wants that outcome, who can stop it.

How about Tamil only TNA, Tamil only EPDP, Muslim only SLMC, Muslim only ACMC?

A biased article by Sarath this time.

Most political parties in SL and in the world are tribal including India and USA – world’s largest democracies. Tribal democracy is a world-wide thing, not confined to SL.

Anyway Christians are not going to vote for SLPP this time. They were lied to and now Rajapaksas are in bed with Easter Sunday attackers. Only Buddhists vote for SLPP just like TNA which is voted by only Hindus and SLMC and ACMC which are voted only by Muslims.

The United National Party has become a microbe.

No they do not and you are no Tamil ( Hindu or Christian ) . Most Tamil Christians nearly all vote for the TNA in the north and east and do not vote for Sinhalese centric parties like UNP ., SLFP or EPDP. If is only fake Arab Indian origin immigrant Tamil Muslims who vote for Islamic extremist parties or for Sinhalese centric parties as they love deny their South Indian Tamil origin , hatflip and badly want to be Arab

          • 2
            2

Not true. Tamil Christians vote for SLFP, UNP and EPDP. They reject TNA. Even the 1 TNA Christian MP is voted by Hindus and otherwise come to parliament through the national list.

SLFP managed to win Jaffna MC many times thanks to Tamil Christians voting for it. Jaffna MC area has a Christian majority.

Of course all Tamil Christians in Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy vote for UNP and SLFP only.

Tamils are 15% of the population but TNA gets about 5% only.

Another 5% goes to pro-Sinhala CWC and other splinter groups. The remaining 5% goes to UNP, SLFP and EPDP.

          GATAM,
Don’t try to justify your theory without evidence.
SJV Chelvanayagam, father of Tamil Arasu (Fedaral party) was a Christian elected by Tamils irrespective of religion. Sumanthiran is a Christian elected by Tamils. Caste may be playing a role in voting. First time Federal party put forward a candidate from a low caste and he won the election with high caste voters. Douglus is not from a low caste. Pirabaharn the leader of LTTE was not from the high caste.

SJVC was voted by Hindus. So is Summathiran.

After Weerawansa left it, the JVP ceased to be tribal. You can see it from their election results. JVP became even less tribal at the last presidential election campaign which reduced them to just 3%.

What will happen to TNA, SLMC, ACMC and CWC if they stopped being tribal? Same thing!

What will happen to Trump, Modi, Putin, Xi, Abe, Erdogan, etc. if they stopped being tribal? Same thing.

This is the sad reality around the world today.

UNP + JVP votes percentage will give a rough indication of how many non-tribal voters are in SL (15%).

TNA + SLPP + SLMC + ACMC + EPDP + CWC + SJB will tell you how many tribal voters are there (85%).

Dear GATMA – A point well made indeed. We need to look at ways to move away from this scenario for a brighter future as a Nation and will be a great way to pay tribute to all the Mother Lankan life’s lost we own them that respect??

I also admire JVP for becoming a National Party discussing National issues and fielding candidates/party offices throughout the Country and even publishing party material in Tamil. That is a totally respectful and progressive journey speaks volumes regards to a party that wishes to incorporate lessons learned and also set a good example for the young (who always have the extra energy and less maturity) to vent their differences in a very constructive way as suppose to pointing guns at each other. They have earned my total respect how they have taken advantage of the GOSL applying lessened learned too to accommodate them as a legal entity…..the question is can the Minority parties do the same?? sooner the better.

      • 3
        1

Short-terminism of all parties prevents them from taking a long term view. At least Tamil and Muslim parties must join together for a start. In 1947 UNP was truly national and had the support of all ethnic groups. That type of a movement is needed today.

True. Only SJB can prevent the Madamulana Mafia from getting 2/3. Sajith is the president in exactly another 4 years’ time. He only have to keep his name clean (without supporting Rajapaksas) for 4 years. That’s all. He must be a total fool to kick that and support Rajapaksas. Will not happen.

Ranil is desperate. He needs Rajapaksa’s manipulated court to save his leadership and party.

      Only Sajith can block a 2/3 majority……..

Tribalism is a creation in Sri Lanka after the Bandranaikes and has been taken to extreme levels by greedy politicians, like the family Groups now leading the show.

2020 election is the last chance for future democracy in Sri Lanka.
That 2/3rd must be overcome, this time with the Students Vote
influencing their family members in the right direction, as to the dangers that have unwittingly slipped in by the Militarisation of
Governance – which will take an upper-hand with any 2/3rd
parliament in the hands of 4 brother family rule.

The SB intelligentsia will never speak-up as do the Tamils is a
      visible pattern.

Do you want Tamils to vote for crooks, war criminals, Sinhala/Buddhist fascists,…. ? All self respecting Sinhalese should vote for Mano Ganesan, a human rights campaigner. Soon they will be forced to seek his services.

You too should retain his contact details in case when “they come for you”.

      Dear Sarath

      – Point well made. A National Party shouldn’t generalise citizens of SL as we all have voted and died for UNP/SLFP in our history and is our right to do so too. I very much hope the material is fact checked before it is published as there are lot of fake stuff about. It is also the opportunity for each and every party to tell the people to respect all by all parties. Yes any party should be able to say material regards what they stand for ie separatism and terrorism in their campaign as is their children who also Died in this process.
-If you listen to each and every stage speach/election campaign or be it non election campaign and read the material(daily news for 70 years) from 1948 to 2020 from FP/ITAK/TULF the entire Nation will have a heart attack. There is a difference in pre 1970 and post 1970 democratic operation vs thuggery as Hon SJV lost the control of his party to criminal elements. We need a National Security act to see to all this once and for all. That is why I always say discussing SL politics without the volumes of the investigative materials for the crimes in Jaffna 1970-1977-1981 has no basis for National discussion of any mans problems nor ethnic problems.
      – I totally agree with Soma’s points on duplicity……….this is how we are where we are?? and lost all we had too.

Aren’t you going to ban Gota leading a party simply because he said this is a Sinhala/Buddhist country. I never understood how a country can be branded something silly as linguo/religious?

It is no surprise Lankan politics has hit its nadir. There is no policy, plan, manifesto anymore. Its now based on nothing bur race/religion. I have never come across election without this being sold. The difference was, years ago major parties sugar coated it with development / mission and vision blah blah. Not anymore. Rajapaksas do not stand for religion, race, people or country. They only care about holding power and making gains for them and those people who have been working for them. Yesterday desperate Lankans who swamped the Lankan Embassy in Jordan pleading to help to return home were tear gassed , beaten and chased away. These folks are now unemployed for months, have no money, evicted from their homes, starving and no one to help. (I am sure there were SB and catholic too). Trust me when the same situation arise in Lanka soon, it may be far worse than it.(we have witnessed the might of military in past when people tried protesting ). There has not been a single genuine leader(in power) who was truly committed for the country and (all) people. Rajapaksas are the worse and pretty good hypocrites in that.

Sarath, Lankan voting public reminds me of a experiment which was done on Monkeys. Two set of samples were picked and one received food and other was introduced to minimal Synthetic Opium with regular food. After few weeks they were let into a chamber where there was two levers in that one delivered food and the other, metered Opium so that they could not overdose. The monkey which was introduced to Opium just kept hitting the lever to get its “high” (even after the trial amount was over) without even caring for its feed and soon died of starvation. In Lanka the Rajapaksas are conducting the research , which has been very successful up to now because the voting public keeps hitting the lever for its “high”.

What a disgrace and look at the evil way this woman smiles when she is leaving the house . Racism has always been practiced by these southern political parties, they had always thrived on Sinhalese racism but now after the defeat of the LTTE it has become more open and brazen Sinhalese racism and from the fake Arabs South Indian origin Dravidian converts Islamic fundamentalism. The LTTE kept both these fundamentalisms on check , especially in the east. Now thanks to India and the west , who helped these fundamentalists and pro Chinese war criminals , defeat the LTTE for short sighted gains or petty revenge this fundamentalist/racist genie has been let out, which is going to prove disastrous, to the nation and the region on the long run. We now have a so called cardinal , who is also espousing racism. A recent article by one of his so called supporters here confirmed this. Half the island’s Catholic population is Tamil and the most sacred , oldest and important Catholic shrines in the island are all in the Tamil areas. Now Catholicism and Buddhism in the island have become only the exclusive preserve of the Sinhalese , forgetting that Tamil Catholics make up half the Catholic population and Tamil Buddhists at one lived and thrived in the island.

Who are these so called Sinhalese Catholics . 90 % of them belong to castes or communities that have a recent South Indian Tamil immigrant origin. Most of them live along the North West coast ( Negombo , Chilaw and Puttalam) that was once part of the Tamil Jaffna kingdom and their grand parents identified themselves as Tamils . If not they originated and lived along the western and southern coasts the home of Karawe, Salagama, Durawe and many other similar castes , that have a recent South Indian Tamil immigrant origin. Even now when one visits these so called Sinhalese Catholic heartland , Negombo ( Neerkallapu) Chilaw( Chilaapam) or Puttalam , one gets the feeling immediately that these areas were once Tamil. The place names , the people , even now many ( especially the older generations ) very familiar with the Tamil language. Thanks to the British who merged this once Tamil north west coast with the Sinhalese areas and then classified the Tamil population living in these areas as Sinhalese and in the last nail on the coffin was when during the Bandaranaike regime when all Tamil Catholic schools in the region were forcibly converted to Sinhalese schools and these poor Tamil children of fisherfolk, were forced overnight to switch from Tamil to Sinhalese .

‘Sinhala is a Sinhalese term’ refers to the Sinhalese word ‘Sinhala’ in the Sinhalese language.

        /b>Dear Rajash,
        .
There are a few Sinhalese-speaking people who are Buddhists who try to live according to the Dharma.
        .
I’m not one of them. I was brought up an Anglican-Christian, but now I’m an agnostic. For this group of Christians, I have immense respect, and I’ve been to many of their meetings, but they don’t have a permanent presence in Sri Lanka:
        .
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quakers
        .
“Religion” should be strictly a personal matter. I know what you mean, “Sinhala-Buddhist” means an idiot who imagines that Gauthama spoke Sinhalese, etc.
        .
However, please try to understand that decent but less sophisticated people may turn hostile towards you because you try to split hairs on a very sensitive subject. Please show your cleverness in some other way.

          No problem, good Stanley.
          .
But now Rajash knows that you know! You have my permission to play games with him. These stands of yours on abstract matters don’t worry me at all.
          .
I’m more concerned with mundane matters. Next Wednesday, we have to vote. Provided all you guys who live in the South, vote for either the “Telephone” of the “Clock” (not all you guys need know what a “compass” is, although Sarath obviously does), I won’t be concerned. Having marked that first “kathire”, if you are guys who don’t know much Sinhalese, vote for a “Hindu”, or a “Muslim”.
          .
I was brought up an Anglican, but the current Bishop of Colombo is such a disgusting worm that I’m counting myself out for the time being. They’ll be electing a new Bishop of Colombo on the 15th. I hope that it is a guy better than the current Dhiloraj, who is ven worse than this Malcolm Ranjith fellow.
          .
If there is a God, I don’t understand why he permitted things called “religions”. In that sense, Gauthama was a capital guy, who said that gods were irrelevancies, but I hope that all Sri Lankans realise that he spoke some sort of Prakrit language, perhaps Pali.

By the way, Sarath is not only most erudite, he’s also very cultured. His entire family appears to be such. There is a cousin of his who sounds very cultured when she answers the phone.
          .
You see, I sometimes have chats with her husband, Indral Perera, who was Vice-Chancellor of Sabaragamuwa University. He knows everything about “laser beams”, but do such things matter? Not at all. Although he’s so distinguished, he’s always very polite to me, who am only a “gambada-iskole-mahattaya.”
          .
On the other hand, he does say that some of the things that he writes are way beyond him; but I know all about Cassandra, and even that the illustration comes from a red-figure vase which shows Cassandra clinging in vain to a statue of Athena.
          .
I hope that rj1952 who writes such atrocious English realises that some of us rustics are more cultured than he is.

As a matter of principle, I am opposed to any reference to ethnicity, religion and other social classification that divides the mankind and not uniting them. Just because there is one guy and his supporters are making a crude reference to it does not follow that the entire electoral process is what the author describes in the heading of his article. As per the children’s story books, we should not emulate the animal in the animal kingdom who started telling others that the sky is falling just because it heard a big noise. As per the video, ladies canvass for votes of only from a group of ethnicities and religion opposing the extremists of such other ethnicities of religions. I must say that apart from being crude there was an element of astuteness on the part of canvassing ladies. They do not say that all such other excluded groups are extremists or terrorists. But in soliciting only from a given group it is implied that the others are either extremists themselves or aid such extremism. As a person who tries to unite people, I feel sad in viewing this kind of video. Sri Lankans must get over this.

What about the Chingkalla Protestant ( Anglican /Methodist) Christians and Thamizh Protestant Christians like me ( Anglican. Methodist and Church of South India) . What about all the Chingkalla and Thamizh happy clappies from the so called Pentecostal and Charismatic churches . Why have they been ignored and left out of this tribal/racist ethno/religious fight? Many of the Chingkalla families and politicians who started this racist , religious , tribal hatred are from co called Chingkalla Protestant Christian families , that turned pseudo Buddhist for political purposed. Eg. Pandaranaickams, Wickremesinghams and Thambi Mudalali Jayawardene ( a very common name in Kerala) . All of recent Thamizh South Indian ancestry. Now all their descendants chant the Chingkalla Poutha racist banna , just like many of the Kandyan Chingkalla upper castes and Radala ( Aristocracy ) who again are descended largely from Thamizh South Indian immigrants .

So very confusing as many of the people leading this so called Aryan Chingkalla Poutha and now Catholic cause are all largely descended from Indian Thamizh immigrants . in our generation we can see more Indian Thamizh immigrant communities like the Colombo Chetties and the west coast Paravans( Bharatha) converting them to Chingkallams and to justify this with fake Aryan North Indian pedigrees . Many of them also have started to chant the anti Thamizh slokas , as this is part of the initiation into the Chingkalla clan. We also have another lot of Indian Thamizh origin converted Islamic Thullukans , who now claim to be Arab and have even started to ape the Arab seriously in every way , now calling themselves Moors and as usual start chanting anti Thamizh slogans in the name of Islam and fairy tale Arab origin. If all these immigrant Indian Thamizh origin communities had remained true to their Thamizh origin , just like the Malayaga Thamizh from the Central highlands, all this hatred , fundamentalism and tribalism may have been avoided, but they had migrate here and for various perceived advantages , either to rule , trade or just for other advantages or forced , started to take on other identities and have created chaos and the biggest losers are the native indigenous Thamizh from NE

As a Thamizh Christian/Catholic . I am becoming increasingly concerned with this behaviour or attitude of this so called cardinal and his acolytes, who are now openly espousing of some form of Chingkalla Poutha Catholic ethnicity. tribalism that is against the values of Christianity or what our Lord Jesus Christ preached and all the church establishments based in Colombo that are all very Chingkalla centric and completely ignore the interests , values and culture of the Thamizh Christian/Catholic in the island and our interests and well being. If the Thamizh Christian/Catholic have to survive and our interests looked after, I am sad to state we will need our own churches and establishments separate from the Chingkalla establishments down south, based either in the north or east , that looks after our interests. Otherwise we will have the same fate or go the same way , as to what happened to the Thamizh Catholics who lived along the north west coast , now all converted to Chingkalla Catholics and are the back bone of Chingkalla Catholism.
