Our Beloved President Wants Us To Forget Our People!

By C.V. Wigneswaran

Justice C.V. Wigneswaran MP

I thank the Chair for giving me this opportunity to take part in this discussion. Much was expected by way of reconciliatory statements from the President vis-a-vis the Tamils. Only advice we got from him was “Forget your people! Come and join me to do development work”.

2022 years ago a person who died on the cross said certain prophetic words – “Man does not live by bread alone” he said. The President wants us to leave our kith and kin, leave those who voted for us, leave those who are awaiting their freedom from Sinhala hegemony in the North and East, leave those who have lost their lands to Government Departments and the Armed Forces and join him to take bread to our people! He thinks the 3000 years of culture and civilization of the Tamils of the North and East of Sri Lanka could be purchased by bread alone. He thinks if the Tamils are forced to live within an occupied territory, if they are deprived of even the existing feeble political rights, if they are sufficiently terrorized, if they are stifled and starved, the Tamils would sell their birthright to a pot of porridge! Maybe the lack of political experience is showing on His Excellency!

His policy statement has nothing to show that he regrets the past. It has nothing to show he welcomes a reconciliatory future. He enumerates what he has done so far, which have not saved this Country from facing bankruptcy. He has not even a word of thanks for those who have come forward to help the Country at this critical hour. Maybe he felt a word of thanks to anyone other than those of Huaren descent might irk the latter. While the President and his ilk have been terrorizing the minorities in this Country he seems to be himself terrorized by thoughts of Huaren wrath!

Let me state here and now that the World acknowledges the fact and so too, many educated and concerned Sri Lankans among the Sinhalese, that Sri Lanka faces today the unprecedented state of affairs bordering on the brink of bankruptcy due to the unresolved ethnic problem. Nearly a fifth of the Country’s wealth is utilized even today for so-called security and to pamper the Military. The Thirty Years’ War was due to the reluctance on the part of our majoritarian leaders to resolve the ethnic problem. But the President refuses to accept that this Country faces an ethnic problem and identifies that the Tamils face an economic problem only. He is like the proverbial cat which closes its eyes and believes the World is in darkness! His inability or refusal to identify the existing ethnic contradictions signals the fact that peace and prosperity would be far-fetched dreams in this Country for many years to come. Even a College student would know that this Country suffers today due to the unresolved ethnic contradictions. But the President believes by giving some economic sops, the Tamil speaking people of the North and East would be satisfied.

If there is an existing political problem the most prudent, positive and scientific way would be to identify the problem, study it closely, find out why it cropped up and find an appropriate solution to it. Our beloved President refuses to identify an existing gigantic ethnic problem staring on his face and seeks a solution to a non-existing ethnic economic problem. In this Country the majority community as well as the minority communities both suffer due to the wrong economic policies pursued by successive governments up to now. The Tamil speaking who are the majority in the North and East suffer as much or more as the Sinhalese and others economically. But they are steadfastly eager for the resolution of their political problem which the President refuses to acknowledge. This does not augur well for the future of this Country.

There is no doubt that from the time of Independence the Tamil speaking People of this Country have been suffering. Land grabbing in the North and East from even before Independence, disenfranchisement of a segment of Tamils who contributed to the prosperity of this Country, foisting of the Sinhala language in areas which had a very miniscule presence of Sinhalese in 1956, militarization of the North when the Tamil speaking people agitated against discriminatory laws, standardization in higher education to prevent Tamils entering higher echelons of education, staging of successive pogroms which killed and maimed many a Tamil including infants brutally killed and women raped which sent their kith and kin abroad seeking better pastures, have all been transgressions committed by successive Sinhala majority governments in terms of the United Nations’ International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESC).The genocide in Mullivaikal was a continuation of this process.

Still such offences are being perpetrated in the North and East. Land grabbing by Government Departments with help from the Military without conforming to proper land acquisition procedures in terms of the Law, expropriation of Resources of the North and East through agents and hirelings, displacement of Tamils from their areas of traditional occupation and settlement of People from outside the North and East in those areas, depriving our fishermen from earning their livelihood in their traditional areas, holding over 65000 acres of State land in the Northern Province to house a massive Military in the area, are all contrary to the provisions of these two Covenants. Many such activities still continue. Not wanting to recognize all these activities, calling upon us the Representatives of the Tamils to join him in furthering economic activities only go to prove that these high handed activities are certainly going to continue in the North and East. Maybe with renewed vigour and vitality.

I call upon the International Community including India to take note of this state of affairs. The President calling upon the elected representatives of the Tamils to sink their ideological differences to join him in economic activities, raises many suspicions.

Our People have suffered greater economic difficulties in the past during and after the War. Yet none of us relegated our political aspirations a second place and promoted economic regeneration as our primary concern. Even during the past 12 years our People have elected a majority of representatives who stood for their political rights. But not recognizing the aspirations of our people the President has asked us to jettison our political claims and join him in economic activities. In other words he wants us to act contrary to the aspirations of our People.

We know the economic problems of our People. We know where this Country is heading economically due to the wrong economic policies of the past. We are already exhorting our People to work with self-reliance towards self-sufficiency in their needs.

But if the Government genuinely cares for our People and introduces economic projects beneficial to them we would no doubt cooperate with the Government to help implement their projects beneficial to our People. But let not the President believe that any one of us would forget the political aspirations of our people and play ball with him to commit treachery upon our People.

Let me end by saying that the President cannot for long close his eyes with regard to the urgency to bring about reconciliation among the various communities in this Island.

If the President and his government are going to be serious in ushering in a period of peace and reconciliation, first and foremost they should

1. Immediately halt all actions and activities that are being systematically undertaken by the Archaeological department, Forest department and Wild Life department and some other departments with the sole objective of destroying the ethnic and cultural character and demographic composition of the Northern and Eastern provinces and thereby prevaricate and re-write history.

2. Abrogate the much abused Prevention of Terrorism Act.

3. Free all Tamil speaking political prisoners presently behind bars under the provisions of the draconian PTA.

These are the inescapable pre-requisites for any meaningful reconciliation programme that could precede any constitutional process to draw up a new federal constitution for our ‘Democratic Socialist Republic’.

Thank you.

Please listen to Professor Harshana Rambukwella ‘s interview, a brilliant conversation, he points out various issues, very educational, please listen to him:

Professor Harshana Rambukwella is an academic whose interest are vast and varied, leading to a very interesting interview on #TheDebrief. In his conversation with Roar Media Editor-in-Chief Roel Raymond, he discusses language, culture, post-colonial literature, Sinhala nationalism, his journey tracing the concept of authenticity — and even 2016’s controversial operatic rendition of ‘Danno Budunge’.

Soon Covid variants may come to an end , but relegion , race, economy , corruption —– variants in Lanka will not end. This is what I thought prior to presidential elections stating ” Lanka may come out of pandemic just in time only to see getting into much worser pandemics” like bankruptcy, food, fuel $ scarcity, starvation, poverty etc . Upto now 6.9 million has forced half to one million under poverty line. Dan Sepada ???

The problem, dear Justice C.V. Wigneswaran MP (that’s how you are referred to as author of this article) is that almost all your many long articles end up with far too many comments on the egg or chicken question. Who came first? The Dravidian Tamil Hindus or the the Aryan Sinhalese Buddhists. I want no longer to be caught up in this endless debate. If this article proves to be a repeat performance, will you consider putting an end to such articles?

Dear Sinhala_Man: Can we in ONE VOICE ask Wigneswaran to INCLUDE all citizens of Sri Lanka (Sinhala/Tamil/Burgher/Malay/Adi Vasi and of all Religions) when he refers to “OUR PEOPLE”. If he “AGREES” and solemnly pledges, I am of opining that HE could very well fit into a FOREFRONT seat in the NPP.

Over to you Mr. Wigneswaran. I am very serious about asking you to consider my proposal. Thank you.

        Simon,
There is nothing wrong in ‘asking’. But, the question asked should be relevant to the discussion.
        .
‘Only advice we got from him was “Forget your people! Come and join me to do development work”.’
‘Your people’ mentioned by the President, refers to whom?
        .
Before asking Justice Wigneswaran, shouldn’t you be asking our President that same question?

Nathan: You are asking me to Ask for Feathers from a Tortise. I know it is the STUPIDEST request to make from this (our?) President.

Please STOP treading on this cesspit anymore. The more you dig into it, the more you get deeper and deeper in this “Cesspit” dug for us – “Ordinary, Common” (a Large Majority) folks to get sunk in it while these “ELITEST” (Rajapakses & all other cohorts) are “Enjoying” a “Heavenly” life.

I request you not get involved and WASTE your time and brain energy to straighten this “Dog’s Tail”. That is why I turned a little towards Wigi.

Simon, right now, I’m a bit confused. With no comments seen on Wiggy’s article, I wrote a careless comment rejoicing that I hadn’t read it! I had been working on Kumar David’s article devoted to Handunneththi:
        .
        https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/handunneththi-degenerates-into-chronic-amnesia/
        .
So, I need time to think out what I’m saying! I wasn’t sure if Wiggy is still in Parliament, but I have read the “article” and find it a speech made in Parliament.
        .
We have both reposed faith in the NPP. Yes, this is a good speech, and Wiggy could fit in to an NPP government, but what we didn’t was was horse-trading. Also can guys like me who were saying that we are not politicians “to join” but only supporters.
        .
So let me just say that I’ve read it all through, and thanks for asking.

“Our beloved President refuses to identify an existing gigantic ethnic problem staring on his face.” -> The president knows but he not in a position to say it to you. The Tamils like you are a victim of an international conspiracy invovling Buddhism. The North-East are areas where the founder of the world religion Buddha lived all his life. The British have settled Tamils here thus hiding its authentic history.

Wiggie, Our beloved President is a former or dual US citizen like his brother Basil and they both work for the US Deepstate so of course he’d want us to forget Lanka which is already a NATO colony, despite all the Chinese infrastructure building development project that actually add value to Lanka rather than destroying the country!
The Rajapakse SInhala Buddhist rhetoric covers up the fact that the SM Diaspora has been weaponized by the AUKUS partners who are asset stripping the country,
The UK Minister was in Lanka with the begging bowl for Lankan Doctors recently.. to promote the brain drain from Lanka as does Australia too..

SL is stuck in the same rot since 1920s with the same old failed structure.

Only way to development, peace and dignity is to split the island into 3 mono ethnic nations with relocation of people. Only 15% of people (including the military in the north and east) need to be relocated. 85% can stay where they are.

All 3 independent mono ethnic nations will be developed in 30 years.

    • 7
      3

There you go again. There have always been two ethnicities and nations on the island from ancient times. The other is a religious identity that arrived on the island from Dravidian Tamil South India a few centuries ago, now deliberately promoted and masquerading as an ethnicity, to divide and rule the island’s Tamils. This religious identity has no ancient history, never had a nation or a homeland on the island. No valid historical claim for a homeland. Now trying to legitimize and cash in on the large-scale ethnic cleansing of the island’s native Tamils from large parts of the east to claim for a homeland, where they arrived as refugees a few centuries ago.

      • 2
        6

Rohan25, ‘There have always been two ethnicities and nations on the island from ancient times.’
        .
And yet Tamils are constantly claiming that the Sinhalese are really South Indian Tamils themselves! They call the Mahavamsa a work of fiction, while proudly claiming that the last four Kings mentioned in it were Tamil! What is wrong with these people?

        • 5
          1

Please ask the same question to yourself. Posting under a fake Scandinavian name does not fool us as to who you really are. It is not only Thamizh but all genetic studies on the Chingkallams done by Chingkallams as well as others have come to the same conclusion. The Chingkallams and the island’s Muslims are South Indians. Also not only the last four kings most of your so-called Chingkalla kings were of Thamizh heritage. Starting from the king who converted to Buddhism. Thevanai Nambiya Theesan son of Mootha Sivan to Dutta Kayavan or Kamini son of Thamizh king Kaavan Theesan or Kakkai Vanna Thessan .Dutta is a Thamizh word or title given to someone evil or wayward. It ends with the last Thamizh king for Kandy Kannuswamy Naickan who took the title of Sri Wickremarajasinhe. This is why when the Kandyan kingdom fell the British deposed him and his family to Salem in Thamizh Nadu, where he lived and died and where his descendants still live. Mahavamsa is largely an anti-Thamizh diatribe that is largely a work of fiction, mixed with a historical narration of what happened in the Chingkalla parts of the island. A real intelligent person and a historian will know how to ascertain and glean what is the truth and fiction there and not blindly believe on most of the anti-Thamizh rubbish that is there.

What is affecting our country cannot is not a question of us against them, we are all victims.
We have to be diligent and find the root cause of our problems and solve them. That is my mission.
To this end, I think we have to look inwards as it is us who have been in leadership positions since independence.
I invite you and all other people with good intent to discuss and figure out our problems and let us proffer practical solutions to propel Sri Lanka higher.

Normally, I fear to walk on Justice Wigneswaran’s shoes. This time, I dare to wear it.
What he is telling is what I have been always stressing. We have an ethnic problem. We cannot ignore that elephant in the room.
    .
Closing the eyes, – as he says -, is not going to make the ‘elephant’ vanish into thin air.
    .
Tamils were forced to face many an economic suppression, in the 70s. The roadblocks set up against our entrepreneurs is fresh in my mind. They were harsh and unjust. We survived.
    .
The scrums being scattered in front of us, with a hope that we would ourselves chase the elephant away, is not going to happen.

    Hovever there is a caveat.
Tamils should agree to drop this word ‘political prisoners’ and use “LTTE suspects in long detention without trial” in that place.
One can see how Tamil political class have not an iota of sympathy for their own people in trying to gain political mileage even out of this situation.

The RORTS by ordinary sinhalas for survival are going to be worse now!!! – A tamil language knowing south east asian resident told me this of how within 4 hours of arrival in sinhala land he was RORTED 4 times: (1) He was tired when arrived at Colombo airport and tried to pay with his credit card the visa fee and the beggar immigration officer said it is a lengthy process ( sri lanka wants to be the next singapore JOKE!!) and asked what currency the bloke had and then converted and took extra additional USD $10 for visa fee (he said notice a europeon woman after him who refused to pay currency and the ROGUE beggar sinhala accepted credit card payment) (2) he only had a small trolley bag with him which was seized by a sinhala porter and who demanded $20 canadian when the going rate then was Rs 100 and he ultimately gave him Sing $2 (3) He had two phones an iphone and a samsung and left the smasung on the Pickme cab dashboard because the Pickme driver took off before he could remove it when unloading his baggage, When followed up the Pickme mob said that he never got into the booked Pickme cab but another unknown cab bull shit.

Also surrounded and supported by lots of racist brain dead deaf and dumb and voted in also by similar. No wonder the nation has been in the doldrums from the time of independence. Have been using race the race religion card to rule, discriminate, promote, educate and provide employment. Not merit. Disenfranchising the Indian origin estate Tamils who had lived on the island for more than 150 years and at that time produced most of the island’s wealth, making life hell for the native Tamils from the northeast, denying them education, employment, language rights, stealing their lands and ethnically cleansing them, committing state-sponsored pogroms on them every five or six years, committing war crimes on them and chasing 1/3 of them to the west and deliberately impoverishing them has not improved the life of the Sinhalese masses. In fact, they are worse off now. What have they achieved? Nothing . Impoverished the country, brought the living standards down. Created a 30-year-old war with their state-sponsored anti-Tamil racism. Deliberately radicalized the island’s largely Dravidian Tamil-speaking Muslims and encouraged their Arabization, especially in the Tamil east, as a tool to marginalize the Tamils.

The President his Cabaal and the vast majority of the island’s Chingkallams do not think there is no ethnic problem or the island’s Thamizh, especially from the north and east are suffering under a state-sponsored Chingkalla occupation, that denies them all rights, as they cannot see this, as they genuinely believe this is what the Thamizh deserve and are entitled to. Therefore there is no problem and cannot understand why they clamouring and fighting for their rights. As they have been already been given the rights that they deserve. Just like what many whites thought in Apartheid South Africa. What are these blacks fighting for? They have already been given all their due rights. Just like the way they were trying to appease the blacks during the Apartheid era, he wants to say everything is economic and wants to throw some crumbs our way, eg menial jobs, substandard jobs, return some stolen land so that we can be under the permanently subjugated and be under Chingkalla occupation and racist rule in our lands, which will soon not be our lands but theirs and then the crumbs will also cease. He is very diabolical and knows what he is doing. Racist to the core and evil.

      Yes

I agree with you on the discrimination of Tamils by the Sinhalese majority.
Not every Sinhalese is a racist. We have to fight racism together as humans.

But I must also ask the tamils, when are you going to see yourselves as humans like us? You people also have issues just like us, even within your ethnicity, like Jaffna tamils think they are better than eastern tails and the eastern tamils think they are better than indian tails, etc.

What happend in history is irrelevant, we have to focus on our future as a nation.
      Where do we start?
      .
Thank God for the old generation of old people with rigid bigoted closed minds are slowly getting extinct and becoming plant food. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
      .
The old generation has been one of the biggest stumbling blocks of progress because they have been indoctrinated from childhood not to think, but to follow a blind ideology where we have to stand against each other on racial lines.

It has always been the clever tactics of so-called politicians to make ruling easy on themselves and divert attention from their lack of ideas. Now it is a primary tool used for looting the country of the little we have.
      .
Time has come for us to wise up and say no to injustice, say no to old stealing and to face the future as humans. Are the tamils ready for this? Or are you happy, playing victim day after day?

      • 4
        1

Human touch, it is not only amongst Thamizh but also amongst all ethnicities certain sections of that ethnicity think they are better than the others. Even amongst your own Chingkalla community, the Kandyan Chingkallams think that they are far better and superior to the low country Chingkallams and most of them will not marry into them. At least the Jaffna Tamils intermarry quite a lot into eastern Thamizh families. The Indian origin Tamils are looked down upon has nothing with them being Indian Thamizh but because of their largely lowly origins and economic status and that are not native to the island like the northeast Thamizh. Sri Lankan Thamizh refugees from the north and east are looked down on by the locals in Thamizh Nadu for the same reason. In England, the Southern English think they are better than the English from the north or midlands, and all English look down on the Welsh. The Highland Scots consider the low land Scots as not proper Scots and call them Sassenach, basically meaning an English person. It is the same everywhere. Caste class region and origin are a factor within all ethnic groups not just amongst Thamizh.

          .
What we need is a change of attitude. Everything will fall into place if we can only stretch our way of thinking.
          .
We have to stop feeling subconsciously downtrodden. All the evil we commit against one another is due this single reason.
We have to face it and deal with it.

By trying to describe the island’s Saivite native Thamizh population who did not convert to Buddhism or the evolving Chingkalla identity as evil aliens and outsiders, it has really done the opposite. It has proven that they have been continuously living on the island from ancient times in a specific demarcated territory.

This like during the colonial period when the subjugated natives uprise or demand their just rights, the rulers try to use the carrot and stick and try to appease the subjugated by throwing them some titbits and granting them minor rights but still do not recognize them as equals who deserve proper rights and to live in dignity. We do the same thing to our household servants or our animals, subjugate them and not treat them as equal but give them a little bit of comfort, food a basic bed instead of sleeping on a mat. Animals do the same thing so that they remain docile, comfortable and produce more for the masters’ rulers. This racist evil man is trying the same tactic. Dismissive and does not want to recognize the island’s Tamils who have an ancient history and a right to be equal and to their nation and land, as equal partners to the Sinhalese but treat them as a subjugated oppressed people under the cruel and perpetual rule of the Sinhalese majority, thanks to the British, and like our servants, farm/domestic animals or like all subjugated people, given little bits of comfort, shelter, and rights to keep them satisfied and docile to Sinhalese power and occupation to be good citizens and productive for their new colonial Sinhalese master, who has taken overruling them from the British.
