Our National New Year!

By Sharmini Serasinghe

The New Year to dawn

in April this year,

I wish will be called hence,

Our National New Year!

A day that must matter

to all of us;

be we Muslims, Tamils, Sinhalese

Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and the rest of us,

for who and what we are

should not matter to us,

as we think of this land,

as one mother

to all of us!

A day for us to give thanks,

to all that is good,

And join hands together,

to defy evil

that is no good!

Leave not to Leaders,

to make this come true,

for they pay lip-service,

only for their own good!

Peace and prosperity

is a wish of us all,

surpassing all boundaries

that divide us all!

This is my dream,

I hope it is yours,

so we can make it happen

with the will

of us all!

Great, Ms Serasinghe, wish you a happy New Year !

    “This is my dream,

    I hope it is yours,

so we can make it happen

    with the will

    of us all!”

This is also my dream, but it is really sad to see things moving its way totally opposite direction these days, just because political will seems to be not knowing the word ” P E A C E & H A R M O N Y”. If a president who has even taken over the ” neethipathi dept” to function under the orders of him directly, fails to take any legal action appropriately against any kind of fanatic segments (BBS or the like minded), that alone show his capability.

I become very helpless when reading news coming from home country.
Today, Ghanasara has turned up in police as was asked to do so but again, he has sowed even more hatred words attacking muslims in general and not forgetting several ruling parliamentarians. He challenges the politicians and muslims while spreading the motives of their organisation -BBS.
No any world democracies would tolerate hatred povocative statments of Ghanasara, why do the politicians -nevertheless allow hiim to continue so ?

“All races must unite Coz unity is might”

They will unite only when state and its rulers recognise diversity of the people.

In other words we must yearn for unity in diversity not the one nation of Hitler:

Ein Volk-ein Reich-ein Führer (One People, One Empire, One Leader).

We are all for unity only when it recognise diversity of people.

“Ein Volk-ein Reich-ein Führer (One People, One Empire, One Leader)”

when closely studying the fearless, respectless, provocatory, abusive filths of Ghanasara and looking at the manner the govt´s actions against them today – I myself feel Rajapakshe´s have hidden agendas comparably with those of hitler then. However, we cant yet make any predictions as to why the majority folks supported them in elections.

      Dear Sharmini Serasinghe,

Thank you for your New Year Wishes and for peace and prosperity for the coming year, despite all the man-made conflicts based on religion.

The New year was based on the Sun being overhead over the Island, astrologically based, on the Geocentric model, which was shown to be incorrect by Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler, over 400 years ago. However, even today, about 25% of the Americans and Europeans believe the Sun goes around the Earth. The numbers are much higher for Sri Lankans and very much higher for Astrologers. However, for the changing of the seasons, it does not matter, as it is based on the tilt of the Earth.

So, the New Year will be based on the North Latitude of the location one lives. What is really funny is that Sri Lankans in Australia and in the West also celebrate on April 13th and 14th, based on memory lane history in Sri Lanka tradition. Anyway, this celebration brings people together, as opposed to religion, that divides people apart.

So, let’s celebrate the Geocentric Model New Year, and put religion and its imaginations in the back burner.

Is Religion Man-Made? How Did Religion Start? The Evolution of Religion .

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql2yz7XDs2A Published on Aug 26, 2013

The evolutionary origin of religions theorizes about the emergence of religious behavior during the course of human evolution. Humanity’s closest living relatives are common chimpanzees and bonobos. These primates share a common ancestor with humans who lived between four and six million years ago. It is for this reason that chimpanzees and bonobos are viewed as the best available surrogate for this common ancestor. Barbara King argues that while non-human primates are not religious, they do exhibit some traits that would have been necessary for the evolution of religion. These traits include high intelligence, a capacity for symbolic communication, a sense of social norms, realization of “self” and a concept of continuity.[1][2][3]

There is inconclusive evidence that Homo neanderthalensis may have buried their dead which is evidence of the use of ritual. The use of burial rituals is evidence of religious activity, but there is no other evidence that religion existed in human culture before humans reached behavioral modernity.[4]

Marc Bekoff, Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, argues that many species grieve death and loss.[5] There is general agreement among cognitive scientists that religion is an outgrowth of brain architecture that evolved early in human history. However, there is disagreement on the exact mechanisms that drove the evolution of the religious mind. The two main schools of thought hold that either religion evolved due to natural selection and has selective advantage, or that religion is an evolutionary byproduct of other mental adaptations.[18]

Stephen Jay Gould, for example, believed that religion was an exaptation or a spandrel, in other words that religion evolved as byproduct of psychological mechanisms that evolved for other reasons.[19][20][21] Such mechanisms may include the ability to infer the presence of organisms that might do harm (agent detection), the ability to come up with causal narratives for natural events (etiology), and the ability to recognize that other people have minds of their own with their own beliefs, desires and intentions (theory of mind). These three adaptations (among others) allow human beings to imagine purposeful agents behind many observations that could not readily be explained otherwise, e.g. thunder, lightning, movement of planets, complexity of life, etc.[22] The emergence of collective religious belief identified the agents as deities that standardized the explanation.

Some scholars have suggested that religion is genetically “hardwired” into the human condition. One controversial hypothesis, the God gene hypothesis, states that some variants of a specific gene, the VMAT2 gene, predispose to spirituality.[23] Another view is based on the concept of the triune brain: the reptilian brain, the limbic system, and the neocortex, proposed by Paul D. MacLean. Collective religious belief draws upon the emotions of love, fear, and gregariousness and is deeply embedded in the limbic system through sociobiological conditioning and social sanction. Individual religious belief utilizes reason based in the neocortex and often varies from collective religion. The limbic system is much older in evolutionary terms than the neocortex and is, therefore, stronger than it much in the same way as the reptilian is stronger than both the limbic system and the neocortex. Reason is pre-empted by emotional drives. The religious feeling in a congregation is emotionally different from individual spirituality even though the congregation is composed of individuals. Belonging to a collective religion is culturally more important than individual spirituality though the two often go hand in hand. This is one of the reasons why religious debates are likely to be inconclusive.

Yet another view is that the behaviour of people who participate in a religion makes them feel better and this improves their fitness, so that there is a genetic selection in favor of people who are willing to believe in religion. Specifically, rituals, beliefs, and the social contact typical of religious groups may serve to calm the mind (for example by reducing ambiguity and the uncertainty due to complexity) and allow it to function better when under stress.[24] This would allow religion to be used as a powerful survival mechanism, particularly in facilitating the evolution of hierarchies of warriors, which if true, may be why many modern religions tend to promote fertility and kinship.

Wish you all a happy new year!
Every year is not the same, Every day is different. Every human is different. Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese are the origins of a small island of the Indian ocean. There are common features as well as differences. Family is fundamental to our culture. You don’t differentiate between your children. Your children are not the same, they have individual needs, they need to have independence, they need to have their own families. As a father and mother we give them equal rights and equal opportunities. It is essential for a healthy, wealthy and prosperous family.

    Hope for Good!

Cinnamomum Zeylanicum is not prevalently available in other Asian countries other than Sri Lanka and a little in Seychelles, what others (China, India etc.) sell is a different and a non-related type of Cinnamon called Cassia. Sri Lanka has almost 80% of the true cinnamon grown in it’s earth, but most of our new generations are diabetics in their early teens against Javi’s proposal.

Yes, shapes of Kewum and Kokis are lovely. Some african countries also have sweets similar to Kewum´s shape. As one born in South but later move to the capital and then left the country for Europe, I have beautiful memories about the way we the family enjoyed our “new year every 13/14 April” Me being the badapissa of the family (youngest) was given the more gifts than any others got, made me really happy to that time. Whereever we travelled to, i meant ot paternal relatives, they offered me some money for my own. All these come to my mind today, though I have not taken part traditional new year celebrations for the last two decades.
HAPPY NEW NATIONAL YEAR ! to all of you.

The presentation of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year rituals time table known as ‘Nekath Seettuwa’ to the President took place at Carlton House, Tangalle on Thursday morning (10 April). The event took place under the guidance of the Cultural Affairs Ministry. But the question is do you really deserve to talk about cultures? Do you have a credibility talk about cultures? You would not have been fighting since the independence, if you do really admire and love cultures. Look at India; it has got 1.2 billion people, plus many languages and religions. But you have only two languages and three religions, with 20 million people, but fighting like animals. Don’t you think you are the least evolved people in Asia? During the final phase of the war thousands of people have been killed. No remorse whatsoever, there wasn’t any mourning day for the people who have died during the war. But the people were dancing and celebrating. It shows your hatred towards your fellow countrymen. How can you call yourselves Buddhists while supporting the regime who killed thousands of innocent people? It takes two to tango; I say this to Tamils and Sinhalese. Do not act as you are perfect while fighting since 1948. Since the conclusion of the civil war the Rajapaksa regime had enough ample time to recruit intellectual to strengthen its brain force to deal with many issues, but it didn’t. Cooperating with India, dealing with resettlements, and collaborating with Tamil diaspora to develop the North and East are few aspects of many issues, but most of the issues are unaddressed or handled poorly. I don’t want the West to intrude into the Indian Ocean under Tamils’ issues, but we need someone within our region to sort out the Sri Lanka’s internal problem which can’t be fixed by the Rajapaksas.

The BBS must be banned; it is becoming more and more radical organisation. I have not seen or heard any Buddha’s teaching in its actions. Gnanasara verbally abused the monk at the press conference venue and when the Muslim Cleric attempted to intervene he was also verbally abused. The BBS said that a Buddhist has no right to speak on behalf of Muslims and threatened to disrobe the Venerable Watarekke Vijitha Thero in front of the media. “Shut up,” the Venerable Galaboda Aththe Gnanasara thero kept shouting at the Muslim cleric and others when they attempted to express their views. The incident took place in the presence of police officers who stood there but did not intervene. Once the BBS members and supporters left the venue the police escorted the Venerable Watarekke Vijitha Thero out of the venue – Colombo Gazette. “Ten former PSD personnel in prison for harassing Rukantha and Chandralekha were released from prison following a Presidential pardon” – AD. “In 2008 there were 914 rape cases of victims under the age of 18 reported while in 2012 it had risen to 1,808 cases says Child Development and Women’s Affairs Minister, Tissa Karaliyadda. Responding to a question in Parliament the Minister said the total number of rape cases of victims under 18 reported from the year 2008 to 2012 was 6,195. It was also stated in parliament that there is a delay in conviction procedure regarding rape cases and young victims only hear of their cases in Court after they are married. It was stated the victims are already married by the time the conviction process is taking up.” – Lanka Truth. The criminals don’t get punished under the Rajapaksa regime. This is a wonder of Asia under the Rajapaksa criminals. They are deliberately delaying the conviction procedures to save the Rajapaksa supporters. Whatever goes around comes around. Eventually everything will come and haunt the Rajapaksa brothers.

I have lived in four continents; I have visited more than ten Asians countries. But when I was visited Sri Lanka in 2012 I felt I was among the lowest in this earth. How can I blame the public? The people are trained by the politicians to hate others and cast their votes to foolish politicians. President Rajapaksa has been in politics since 1970; he knows very well how to fool the majority. He can pitch far better than others when it comes to an election. This is a downside of the democracy; if the people are not smart then the politician will be laughing forever. President Rajapaksa won’t have the majority votes if we take 1000 political intellectuals to cast their votes. The West has developed its knowledge for the last 700 years; therefore the people in the West have some idea about what is going on. But in Sri Lanka the majority have no idea; in this case the democracy can damage the country than doing good to the people and the country. This is one of the reasons the West is so keen to implement democracy in the developing countries. For me, revolution wouldn’t work without a genuine evolution. The true evolution comes from good education, learning new languages and cultures, traveling around the country, region and the world, general knowledge etc.

The government presented a supplementary estimate to Parliament for Rs.5 billion that includes buying high security vehicles for the security of VVIPs. According to sources the high security vehicles for the security of VVIPs are for the use of the President, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Minister Basil Rajapaksa and several close associates of the President – Source LT. The terrorism is over, why do they need high security vehicles? It is clear that the Rajapaksa regime is losing votes; enemies are increasing; therefore, they need more protection. They are preparing to take the path of North Korea. It will get ugly; if the regime initiates its own domestic enquiry or international mechanism to investigate charges of war crimes and human rights violations in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the regime will not investigate the war crimes at all, but will take the North Korea’s path. The regime didn’t plan wisely to addresses the issues during and after the war. Inability to deal with the Tamils’ issues and India were the main reasons for the war, yet the regime has not addressed those main issues since the end of war in 2009. Therefore, the worse is yet to come for Sri Lankans and Indians. I have written a detail letter to the Indian government why the Rajapaksa regime must be removed sooner than later. I will forward the letter to the newly elected government after the India’s election.

There is going to be a Avurudu Uthsavaya in Nagoya on Sunday 13th. After the latest BBS antic there is uncertainty among Muslims about going as they usually do. But a Muslim had told his co-religionists to look at the other picture which that there were decent monks in the incident who are working for national unity. That thought has caught on and Muslims are going to join their compatriots in the festivities. We are going too! I am looking forward to the gala event. To
    heck with the BBS!

      Dear Hameed,

Please consider it as a single incident. Almost over 90% of buddhists in the country would never support BBS or any like minded segments. This you should have sensed if you lived in the country. Today, buddhists- real buddhists have lost their faith in the present administration whose mister of Justice is an educated senior muslim (Hakeem). Many of us keep asking why Hakeem stays mum further, while even if you leave other folks, but his own community men and women have been attacked by BBS back by powerful govt cronies.
Where I am sitting, -western europe will also have such New year celebrations, but for some pvt reasons, I will have been away from them this time. We need to promote that we are all not like BBS by our thoughts and minds. Today, we consider all of us citizen equal – atleast larger fractions of the educated people would not agree with any kind of lunatic organisation that would cause the widening one another than the getting more closer.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

Happy Sri Lankan New Year to all Sri Lankans and the guests in our midst.

Let the New new Year make us contribute in whatever way we can, to make our country the land of Dhamma/ Dharma/ Aram/ Righteousness that it was meant to be.

Let us not sacrifice righteousness at the alter of expediency or greater material gain.

Let us be beggars, if need be, but yet stand upright as persons who will not harm fellow persons in thought, words or deeds.

Let us pray that wisdom prevails in our politicians in the New Year.

Let us pray that our politicians will care for us more than they care for themselves in this New Year.

Let this be the best New Year we ever had.

Let this be the most memorable New year in our history.

Let us not give up hope despite whatever happens in the New year.

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

    “This is my dream,
    I hope it is yours,
so we can make it happen
    with the will
    of us all!”

There is a need in the country to make it to happen. For years stretch, the Grinches have stolen the New Year from Tamils. 1949, they started their exodus to India, Instead of celebrating their New year, after toiling on the mountain rocks, for the entire year for pennies and paisas.
The New Year is, mainly, celebrated in Lanka and South India-TN. Even more on that, The Paththini (Pattini) Deviyo – Kannaki prayer is available only in Lanka, just no talk of south India, not even in TN. This two are telling a lot of stories. It’s very eloquently telling that the Lankan Tamil culture and Sinhalese culture are one and the same. The only difference in that is the Mahavamsa division. It has been proved, recently, that Kantharodai Buddhist remains are of Tamil origin. This completes Tamil-Sinhala cultural Jigsaw.
From or even before Kannaki’e events took place, Lanka and TN had only one culture. A full cultural exchange has been taking places between the two areas. Right after Kannaki events, the TN went into Jainism and Buddhism. It has been coming to northern Lanka and moving to South too. The movement certainly was not complete in Gamunu’s time. Then Brahminical Influence came to TN. (North Indian Culture is Brahminical culture. There is no Brahminical influence in Northern Lanka Caste or Sinhala Caste system. Further Sinhalese has no connections to Arian blood or North Indian Culture, from where the Buddha is.) This time, the South Indian culture was influenced by Brahminical culture. But, Lanka did not change to that much. A few Hindu conversions took palace in North. South was holding on to Buddhism. During the rise of Cholas, the Northern conversion was completed. Now, there was a full language barrier existed between the North and the South. South is no longer an Immigrant community to easily lend for the neighboring influences overrides its practices. Hinduism, after this, never went to south. But, anyway, the Sinhalese were already formed as, basically, Tamil – Hindu-Buddhist. (This is nowhere available in the world. Sinhalese adjusted for Pali, But Jaffa Tamils did not take hands of TN Tamils to adjust with Sanskrit. Thought the rivalry remained with the Lankan communities, this is not new for one who knows about Chaera-Chola-Pandiya’s rivalry. Still it is very hot within Malayalies (Chaera) and TN Tamils (Pandiya, Chola) communities.) The lie in the Mahavamsa is not easily detected from the supper human nature of The Lion and the Buddha flying to Lanka. It is, without hiding, openly telling Gamunu prayed Muruga and got the sword and defeated the Rajarata King. Then he went back and paid tribute to Muruga again. This is telling the war was not fought on the line of Buddhism as Mahavamsa claiming. Before Gamunu go to Rajarata, he had Kataragama Temple to destroy, if he has been fight on the line of Buddhism – Hinduism. The immigrant society came from east of India, at the start, was only a small minority. It got mixed with majority living in the country. Their culture was adopted by from the majority. They are not Arians. Diwali is not their new year. It is crystal clear now that the division was inserted, unbelievably, one single man, Mahanama.
Now, unless a real separation comes and both races take their activities within their hand, any new reconciliation is not going to work. It is further clear that Singhalese lost the freedom this time because of Tamils. The power collected to make modern king was, originally drawn to suppress Tamils. In other words, Sinhalese were fooled and their New Year was stolen by the Grinches with the promise of stealing only Tamils’ New Year. So, at least, to earn their freedom back and rebuild their democracy from the Grinches who cheated them showing the Tamil, Sinhalese has to let the Tamils go alone. This will, one day bring the reality of the North Vietnam-South Vietnam, East Germany-West Germany realities. Now they are one and peaceful countries because their new annexation took place with equal terms.

    Happy New Year!

    Dear Sinchappu,

Please don’t get me wrong. This is not a ‘single’ incident as you say, but the latest in a series of planned attacks on Muslims and Christians.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that a majority of Sinhalese are not like this monk. Let me also say that it isnot only Hakeem who is twiddling his thumbs. All ministers are doing just that!

Wish you and all decent readers of Colombo Telegraph a happy new year. God knows we need one!

You may be right. Many pose the same question why ministers are kept in silent modes while the name and participation of president for minor to major kind of opening/inaugauration is being repeated no matter collosal sums are being wasted for his transport/security. Be it a toilet, laboratory, bridge, shopping centre, – THE MAN MR president of srilanka´s participation is seen any headlines. Where I am sitting -Western europe, I dont see any of the EU leaders enjoy opening anything here, because they have better things to do as the heads of states.
As we read it today, something against BBS will be there soon. Like or not Gosl has to take hard actions against him soon.
Wishing you a national new year – regardless of being where you are.

Mid April is the festive season for many Asian societies, Indians, Japanese and Sri Lankans as well.

Why some one wants to make it political by inserting the word NATIONAL ?

      JimSofty and Avtars,

      Happy Geocentric New Year.

“Why some one wants to make it political by inserting the word NATIONAL ?”

You have a good point here. It is common to All. The Sun is almost directly overhead, and one cannot see one’s own shadow at noon. All the Native Veddahs and all the Paras, called Earthlings, are affected by it, including the elephants. So we might as well call it a National New Year’s Day. ( The Earth still goes around the Sun, tilted at 23.5 degrees)

Other Asians have to wait a few days more before the Sun is directly overhead,. Kerala and Bengal April 14th and 15th, but for your cousins in South India, Tamil Nadu, is 14th Monday.

We have great writers to Colombo Telegraph. But the sad thing is the peasants in the South who are the king makers, do not read a word of this. They are only allowed to read the controlled media. How can we reach the true SriLankan king makers? This is what we have to focus on. I hope the intelligentsia who contribute valuable ideas to Colombo Telegraph will find a way.

How can the Intelligentsia hope to influence Unintelligent but self-seeking Politicians?

I shall stick to the 1st of January. There are people here who are citizens but who are not of this island just as there are islanders who are citizens of Britain and the USA who are not of those lands and yes citizenship shall be the sole criteria not spatial or temporal location of ones earthly advent. This “mother land” like all other mothers is a dark and cursed evil at whose urging and in whose name deadly deeds are done.

Like the Malayala Vishu (വിഷു) in the month of Mesha of a Kollavarsham (Solar Calendar). It is observed that all men are equal and one is the human kind is faithfully understood in the Nation of Kerala distinct than all other states in the whole India.

    (Wishes from a different perspective)

In this very new year let us “Saw diya puramu” or ‘Saudiya Puravamu’, lets get more and more foreign jobs for our recruiting masters, and flow kiriyen & paniyen in the coffers of the banks from the poor punters’ foreign exchange, and let the labour department nab more and more abscondees at the airport’s entrance to imply forced charges on the foreign workforce as non-benefit insurances. Amen
