MADINAH – Former Dutch Islamophobe and a former leading member of far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders’ party Arnoud Van Doorn visited the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah to pray and say sorry for becoming part of a blasphemous film.
Doorn was among the Freedom Party leaders who produced the blasphemous film, Fitna. Last month he reverted to Islam after an extensive study about the religion and the Prophet (peace be upon him).
He said that the worldwide outrage against the film made him study about the Prophet (pbuh) and that eventually led to his conversion.
He headed for Makkah to perform Umrah after meeting the two imams of the Prophet’s Mosque, Sheikh Ali Al-Hudaifi and Sheikh Salah Al-Badar, who enlightened him on how to lead the life of a good Muslim and confront challenges facing Islam in the West.
A member of the Dutch parliament and The Hague City Council, Doorn announced his decision to accept Islam on his Twitter profile. He also posted a tweet in Arabic declaring that “there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet.”
At first, other users took the news as a joke. After all, an active supporter of a notorious Dutch hater of Islam, Wilders, he repeatedly approved Islamophobic statements and public actions, and personally participated in them.
But Doorn, who now serves as a regional adviser at the City Hall in The Hague, personally confirmed his decision to practice Islam in an official letter to the city mayor.
Most recently, the politician filed a formal application to the mayor of the city to allow him to perform prayers obligatory for Muslims during his working hours.
“I can understand people are skeptic, especially that it is unexpected for many of them,” Doorn told Al-Jazeera English satellite channel.
“This is a very big decision, which I have not taken lightly.”
“In my own close circle people have known that I have been actively researching the Qur’an, Hadith, Sunnah and other writings for almost a year now,” he said.

“I have heard so many negative stories about Islam, but I am not a person who follows opinions of others without doing my own research,” he said. “Therefore, I have actually started to deepen my knowledge of Islam out of curiosity.”
The 46-year-old has continued on The Hague Council as an independent candidate since splitting from Wilders’s party. Doorn’s decision to embrace Islam has won mixed reactions in the Netherlands.
“According to some people I am a traitor, but according to most others I have actually made a very good decision,” he told Al-Jazeera.
“The reactions are generally positive and I also received quite some support via twitter.
“It feels good that people who do not know me personally have understanding of my situation and support me in my choice.”
Asked if he now regretted joining the Freedom Party, he replied: “I have learned that every experience in life has a purpose. However, with the knowledge I have today, I would have undoubtedly made a different choice.”

I have seen and experienced almost everything you have written. There were many civilizations, Pagan Gods, cults, witch craft, ancestor skul worship, infant and adult sacrifices etc,etc, long before Buddhism or Islam came to existance. Also still Hindy rituals are practiced on the side of Buddhism.
All I have seen is only when a religion does not deliver it’s message and obligations to it’s congregations, it start to deteriorate. Holding to the faith of a perticular religion is only depend on the deliverer or the messenger or the Clergy or Priest.
Now their “Clergies” actions are depend on their faith,attachment to the source and practice through, pain,sorrow and example.But the moment they mix their priorities and if they divert from the original source due to many reasons, then their followers dump them.
I think Sri Lanka’s Buddhism is at a cross road mostly after forming of JHU, BBS, Ravana, Rawaya etc,. That’s why I said about the Newton’t Law. History has many stories to back them and prove them.
It’s better BBS and the followers think twice.
If Buddhism disappeared from Afganistan, it is due to inefficiency of the Buddhist priests who failed to safeguard it through action and by word.
Also politicising and suppressing other religions are the first signal of a failed religion which will head into it’s own downfall and implosion. Suppressing another religion always backfires. Wait and see in England and Europe.

To the magnificent Arab civilization the world owes algebra, algorithm (logarithm), arithmetic, calculus, geometry, trigonometry, the decimal system, and the brilliant “zero”. The revolutionary “zero”, which gave us what is referred to in the West as the Arabic decimal numeration system, did not originate in India as some Western historians claim but was rather developed in ancient Iraq by the Neo-Babylonians maybe as early as 500 BCE. [21] American mathematics Professor Karl J. Smith indicated in his textbook, The Nature of Mathematics, that while the ancient Indians developed mathematical digital symbols, their numeration system offered no advantage over other earlier systems because it did not contain a “zero” or use a positional system. [22] Although the Arabs’ Semitic ancestors in ancient Iraq developed the “zero”, it was only through the great post-Islamic Arab civilization that it was incorporated into the main body of the general mathematical theory. It took Europe almost 300 years to finally accept the “zero” as a gift from the Arabs. The Arabic numerals were simultaneously expressed in somewhat two different figures or forms, one Abbasid (the eastern style which most Arabs currently use) and one Andalusian (the western style which is used today in the Arab Maghrib countries of Northwest Africa). It was this Arab Andalusian form of numerals (i.e., 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9) that the West and the rest of the world eagerly adopted; hence the worldwide label “Arabic numerals”.
Mohammad al-Khawarizmi (780-850), the giant genius scientist who was born and died in Abbasid Baghdad, created modern algebra and made brilliant contributions in the field of mathematics. In fact, the word “algorithm” is derived from his name, and the Arabic word al-jabr (or “algebra” in English) comes from the title of his major work, Kitab al-Jabr wa al-Muqabalah (“The Book of Integration and Equation”). Served for a number of years as the Executive Director of the prestigious “House of Wisdom” in Baghdad, al-Khawarizmi was also the first scientist in history to explain how passing light through water particles creates rainbows.
Another Muslim genius in mathematics, also from Abbasid Baghdad, is Abu Arrayhan al-Biruni (973-1048) who was a mathematician, astronomer, physician, physicist, chemist, geographer and historian. He was probably the greatest scientist in all of medieval Islam. Another great mathematician is Naseer al-Din at-Tusi (1201-1274). It was in the super work of at-Tusi that trigonometry achieved the status of an independent branch of pure mathematics, thus making it an invention of Arabic science. At-Tusi’s contribution was to combine the results of earlier investigators and to replace Menelaus’ complete quadrilateral by a simple triangle, thus freeing trigonometry from spherical astronomy. [23]
Practically all of the advanced trigonometrical work in the world during the 12th and 13th centuries were made by Muslim mathematicians and published in Arabic. Arabic influence in this major scientific field did not only impact the West, but also other parts of the world. It seemed that even the Chinese trigonometry as used by Kuo Shouching at the end of the 13th century was also of Arab origin. [24]

What you say about Buddhism is very true, there is lot to take from the teachings of the Buddha even for non-buddhists (and people of other religions in Sri Lanka are in a unique position to appreciate this living in a buddhist country). You have fully misunderstood Buddhism. You have described Buddhism like a blind describing an elephant. The blind that feels elephant’s legs thought, it’s a log or ‘wangediya’. The other blind that touched the elephant’s trunk thought it’s a tree and so on.
To learn alone you have to read Tipitaka. And Tipitaka has 58 volumes and many of them have in the excess of 500 pages. Now, contrary to what you’ve herd, there is lot more in those books than to be a monk and meditate to reach Nivana in this life.
In Khuddaka Nikaya there is this ‘Dhammapada’ which has an anthology of 423 verses. It is useful to anyone and everyone. Google ‘Dhammapada’ and read it and compare it to your Bible or Koran teaching and tell us what you think of it.
Or, Google ‘Sigalovada Sutta’ and go for buddhanet.net site and read it for it’s been the Buddha’s advice to a young man named Sagala to better his, ‘this’ life. Its the 31st Sutta, in the Digha Nikaya. Show me where in the Bible or Koran have given such graceful nonviolent yet beneficial advice to ordinary man.
What you Goraka thinking is ideal Buddhism described by Gananath Obeysekera, S. J. Tambiah H. L. Seneviratne and the like. Like that blind man, those people too have grabbed Buddhism by the trunk or some other part but not the whole body. Otherwise Tambiah wouldn’t have asked; “how come believers of a religion that preaches ahimsa kill?”
Little he forgets that if Sinhala Buddhists followed such idealistic Buddhism, they would have been wiped out a long ago. Tambiah should have explored on how Sinhala Buddhists survived all this time? And why monks during King Dutugemunu’s time disrobed voluntarily to fight the invader only to put it back again to be a monk afterwards. Goraks theories can be applied to folks that have no high literacy rates thanks to such religions. Once I met some muslims from Morrocco. They were students and according them specially their sisters had not been sent to school. What nonesense are you talking about; men of the Creator God in any of the Abrahamic religions never believed “the earth revolves around the sun ….” as you said at least not until the twentiath century. Show me a single verse in any of the scriptures as said by Son of the God or his Prophets that says what you said. They only talk about the God’s creation what the God wanted us to do.
Even after Galalio, men of God never believed what you say. Only in 1992 Pope John Paul II officially conceded that the Earth revolves around the sun at an address he made before the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. I am not saying Galalio is absolutely right either.

Leela, the Quran never says that the heavens and the earth were created in six ‘days’. The Quran uses the word ‘AYYAM’ which means ‘epoch’. An epoch is a period of time, and does not mean one day. So according to that it should read as ‘six epochs’, and not six ‘days’.
I am not here to argue with anyone about religion. I only replied to the comments of someone who said ‘that is science, not god….. it is a nature of this world…. The earth revolves around the sun and comes to the same point every 365 days. This has been going on for billions of years, year after year.
But this process will not go on forever, since the sun is a star, and a star has a finite lifespan. All the monuments to the sky-god, along with the believers and their holy carpets/holy books/holy rocks will vanish in an instant.

“Maha Brahmaya lova mavuveya”… is a beginning verse in the Tripitaka. No question of no Supreme deity. Buddha never argued against his own people on the subject of Gof or No-God, is very clear. Many of the ideas that influence Buddhism came from Hinduism, and creation stories fall into this category as well. The most common Hindu stories tell that Brahma created the universe, or at least is the oldest being in it. The universe was created, changes, and then is destroyed. This cycle is called a kalpa, and has happened an uncountable number of times already. Just as people a born, live, die, and are reborn, so is the universe as a whole. Again, the idea of a creator god is NOT ACCEPTED in Buddhism, but the stories are often repeated in the texts, mostly because people at the time knew the stories.
