Several police teams are currently carrying out investigations against the new group ‘Aava’ after they carried out a sword attack against two police officers at the Chunnakam Market in Jaffna over the weekend.

Soon after the attack, the group claimed responsibility and said that the attack against the police officers were in retaliation to the killing of two Jaffna University students by the Police last week. The police are currently collecting information about the gang with underground connections.
On Sunday, two police intelligence officers were hospitalized after they were attacked by a group who came on motorcycles.
Following the incident, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has called for a total crackdown on ex-LTTE cadres, while emphasizing that the former cadres might be behind the various criminal activities that is taking place in the North and East Provinces.
JHU’s Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe said that two gangs, namely the Aava and the Baava groups were carrying out various criminal activities in the North such as extorting civilians, kidnapping and carrying out robberies and therefore it was important for the authorities to crack down these activities. He added that over 12,000 ex-LTTE cadres had been released after rehabilitation.

Aava group is nothing new to Jaffna. This was very active during Mahinda_Gota_Douglas regime. In fact, it was a group working closely with Srilankan military. Aava group was silent for some time after the exit of that regime. The sword attack happened in Chunnakam and there was no police officers present at the time of incidence. The initially the sword group attacked a shop and later they attacked few people who were raised voice against the attackers. Then sword people attacked those raised voice and ran away in motor cycle. It was later revealed that they were police in civil and they are not belong to Chunnakam police. It appears that there was a close relationship between the murder of two university students, the sword attack on chunnakam by the so called Aava group in a daylight and the propaganda of Mahinda Regime in the South.

During the last years there has been an increase in the number of motor cycles and “Pleasures” in Jaffna and traffic. There are many accidents and many drivers without license and totally reckless driving. I know about a dozen recent victims of accidents. There are three wheelers with 20 kids in them going to school some of them hanging outside of the vehicle.
I sincerely wish that the police finally cracks down on reckless driving and the drivers/vehicles without documentation.
Instead of letting people go after a warning and a small “donation” the police should take the culprits to court. If, for instance, 10 teachers driving without a helmet are taken to court the others might start to wear a helmet.

This is an area of the country where there are 1.5 armed personnel for every ten citizens. This is beside the police force, whose numbers are not even listed. In such a place if armed gangs in motorbikes can freely roam, it does not take even a pea brain to know with whose blessings they operate. IGP, Please don’t go on a wild goose chase wasting every bodies’ time.
I remember when the white van story came it was first laughed off. When Grease Yakka story came people were admonished by police that they were hallucinating. Now we know that in Giritale camp the army was even operating a shadow LTTE gang who were used to lure Prageeth Eknaligoda to his violent death. Army intelligence still has so much power and state resources to operate a parallel Government.
