President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Time-Machine

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

The strangest speeches during the parliamentary debate on the Emergency came from two ex-military-men in the government benches, to wit, Rear Admiral (Retd) Weerasekara, and Major Denipitiya. They said that if fingerprinted as having participated in the Aragalaya, young people would be unable to secure employment. Whether that is in keeping with the law and the Constitution, the BASL should know.

But what I know is that those remarks reveal a delusion that this administration will remain in power for a long enough a period of time for that to be a problem for the youngsters who were in the Araguaia, which at one point was probably a million strong.

It is far more likely that those who voted for the harshly repressive Emergency on July 27th will suffer the same fate electorally that Mr. Wickremesinghe’s UNP did in 2020.

If Emergency had been declared on the night of May 9th, or even during the small-scale street-fighting with the Army near the Parliament on July 13th by a group that was denounced real-time, publicly and repeatedly by the leading Aragalaya activists, it would have had some kind of law-and-order logic.

But now? The declaration follows the gratuitous assault on a clump of Aragalaya protestors at Galle Face Green. Above all it follows the selection by Parliament of the unelected Ranil Wickremesinghe as President of the country, wielding the full panoply of autocratic powers of the 20th amendment.

Following the declaration of the Emergency, unarmed, non-violent Aragalaya activists have been arrested, seized on a plane and it is reported, even been picked up in a van.

Hiru News reported that the Cabinet and the Government parliamentary group were briefed by the head of Intelligence that the Aragalaya was merely “the tip of the iceberg” of a far-flung revolutionary plot to seize power.

If that were indeed the case, how is it that the revolutionary conspirators did not push forward on July 9th when as the whole world saw it had a massive volume and momentum? How come the Aragalaya pretty much dispersed after its achievement of its main aim, the removal of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, unilaterally withdrew from the state buildings it had occupied and was about to leave the precincts of the Presidential Secretariat?

It just doesn’t make sense. There are two possibilities.

Either there was such a plot but the plotters chose not to push forward when the Aragalaya was at its peak, when they had the momentum in plenty and instead they decided to camp out in the various state buildings they occupied and sing songs—one evening a young lady accompanied by a guitarist sang Bella Ciao on the lawn of Temple Trees or the PM’s Office.

So, the revolutionaries were either dumb and didn’t take their shot, lost the momentum, and therefore the threat has passed, is no longer active—in which case the situation does not require the declaration of Emergency rule.

Or, there never was such a wide-ranging revolutionary conspiracy in the first place.

What is scary is that we have seen all this before; lived through this before.

Firstly, in December 1982, the Jayewardene regime deprived itself of legitimacy by scrapping the parliamentary election scheduled for early 1983 and held a Referendum today. In the current replay, legitimacy has leached out of the system by appointing through parliamentary selection—not even unanimity or consensus—Mr. Wickremesinghe as President.

Secondly, when 13 soldiers were massacred by the LTTE in July 1983 and both Prime Minister Premadasa and Colombo mayor Sirisena Cooray urged President Jayewardene to send the dead bodies to the individual villages rather than hold the funeral in Colombo and the president agreed, he was prevailed upon by the Defense bureaucracy of the day to reverse his decision. The Kanatte rioting took place as a result.

Thirdly, when the anti-Tamil pogrom, Black July 1983, burst upon us, the Police top brass briefed the Cabinet that the JVP was responsible. Minister Ananda Tissa de Alwis told the nation that it was a three-stage plan: targeting firstly, the Tamils, secondly the Muslims and Christians, and thirdly the rich. This sounds exactly like what we are hearing from the Ranil-plus-Rajapaksa regime today.

President Wickremesinghe knows better than to swallow this bilge. But he has chosen to do so, or to dish it out to the public.

The JVP was framed and banned in 1983. Today the FSP and JVP—though the order is reversible—are being framed.

Since the Aragalaya is in ebb-tide, there is no valid reason for the declaration of a state of emergency. It cannot be in order to deal with a clear and present danger. That leaves only one other explanation. Emergency has been declared in order to deter economic protests by the people and to unleash the Armed Forces and the Police against the people when the economic crisis bites even more.

More specifically, Emergency has been declared to smash the student unions, the trade unions, the peasant unions, the fisheries unions, the women’s organizations, i.e., the organized mass movement, to blast open the resistance to ‘stabilization’ and ‘structural adjustment’ programs of neoliberal ‘shock therapy’.

To put it baldly, the draconian Emergency is not aimed at a radical terrorist threat or at Aragalaya 2.0.

The Emergency is aimed at Aragalaya 3.0, which, given the economic crisis and the coming austerity, cannot but be Hartal 2.0.

Will it work? Can it work? Remember what happened after the framing and repression of the JVP in 1983, which pushed that party out of open politics and the democratic mainstream in which it was functioning? Our country was plunged into an intense civil war in which tens of thousands died. Today the Left is represented by the JVP and FSP, both of which are demonized by the regime.

Today there are hundreds of thousands of young people who did not and do not belong to these Left parties, but are as if not even more spirited and rebellious. If they are subject to repression, they can either join one of the two Left parties or form their own radical-democratic rebel movement which is bigger than the socialist FSP and JSP put together.

Is that what the new President and his Government want? In the 1980s the civil war in the South was (barely) containable, because the working people, including the peasantry, were not involved because the economy was ticking over. It was an insurrection of radical left youth, not the adults, the working people, and the middle classes.

Today, with an economy that has tanked, or been tanked, all classes and all generations have been drawn into the struggle. In the 1980s, the country was led by JR Jayewardene who had won the Presidential election of October 1982 convincingly. He was succeeded by Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa who won the Presidential election of November 1988.

Does the Old Guard, with an average age of 70+, really feel that lucky? Today the country is run by an unelected leader. Would President Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, the Cabinet and the ruling SLPP really like to spend the rest of their term having provoked the most massive, militant rebellion this country would have seen since Independence, against the backdrop of a collapsed economy?

Evil Ranil has made a speech in Kandy not to ask him to resign because he has no home to go to. I have a question for Ranil. By that talk, if he says the money left with him is not enough to build a new home for him, will he donate that small amount of money for the 90,000 war widows in the North? The deed of donation should read that he is donating all his property he has at this time as it is not worth that much. As he is already used to a poor life, he can live in the presidential house that will be given to him when he retires, and the pension, reimbursed expenses, & guards & ….. (We do not want to drag prof. Mythri’s properties & income into this as this is a political matter). Then, from that money we will build 90,000 cottages for the war widows and will give gold bars equal to the weight of Ranil to Elumalaiyan also. Sad part here Evil might be re-delivering JR’s July 1983 speech in his sarcastic way! JR said Tamils’ suffering only makes Sinhalese happy. Ranil blaming protestors set fire to his home and he has no home to go to, so he does not want to leave the Presidential palace.

“Mahinda Rajapaksa has no right to live anymore, he should be publicly killed to appease the anger of the people today.” — leelagemalli

People are begining to think your way, Native! …… Violence is the only language Lankan “power” understands. One night of burning on May 9th has more significance than 1000 days of peaceful Aragalaya. …….. All kudos to you for being the first to realise it. :)) …….. Human/world history is a good guide.

“Some got tattoed Rajapakshe penis on their chests” — leelagemalli :)))

The poor sod EE, has the tattoo on his forehead ……. the way the Rajapakses control him, Ranil now has it up his exhaust pipe …….. and poor Ranil fans can’t tattoo his on their chests because he hasn’t one.

Lanka is in more trouble than you might think ……. with Ranil, even the once thriving, tattooing-business is in as much trouble as tourism and farming ……..

      You ain’t seen nothin’ yet

“One night of burning on May 9th has more significance than 1000 days of peaceful Aragalaya”

Now Ranil has promised to build nearly 74 new houses, replacing the old ones.
Do you know who is going to pay for it?
Ranil should appoint you the Finance Minister responsible for looking after SLPP crooks.

What a smart explanation for why the criminal Ranil is in the Presidential palace; because he has no house to go to! Earlier he said he must remain in the PM position at least for a week because, within that week the World Bank officials coming to approve the loans he wants, and The World Food Programme was going to visit to assess the food needs of people to grant them food. Whether the Evil Emperor met the International Bodies’ officials or not is another story, but none of them had offered any help to Langkang. Apparently, none of them were so enthusiastic to play a character in Evil Ranil’s farcical shows and waste their precious time. Then tell me please, is this the Evil Emperor going to bring relief for the country’s suffering poor people? Doesn’t one think that IC & UN may get serious before they throw their pennies in a bottomless ocean, the Wildlife Sanctuary, SinhaLE Lankawe? Then the Evil told Anura to return the guns that were stolen during the protest. This Evil does not possess traits or quality to perform even the Colombo Municipality cleaning jobs but has become the president of the country and making the whole country only as a pantomime show to entertain the world.

  • 6
    6

Recently a diplomat said (Britain?) If one finds a way to export what is happening in Langkang politics, then a lot of desperately needed foreign Exchange can be earned. (Please do not blame me because I do not like Mr. Clean, I am artificially dressing him down). Evil Ranil could be the only arrogant dictator in the world who made a pantomime show out of the protests people make to express their anger at their deprivation of food, water, light, gas like basic needs, by the UNP & SLFP faction who ruled and robbed the country for 75 years.

Further, he said that if he resigns the country will be gone. Ranil wants to save the country the same way he saved the UNP for the last 40 years. It seems, he is still believing that he has saved His Grandpa’s UNP. Whether he saved UNP is right or not, but he is following the path his grandpa showed him to annihilate Tamils.

Evil Racist is not ready to give in detail where and how the country would be gone, but he means that if protestors make him resign, Tamils will steal the Sinhala Buddhist Nation. The venom in that speech is worse than JR delivered in the July 1983 speech.

These leaders spent $400B to genocide Tamils to steal Tamils’ land with concocted Dutugemunu story. Dutugemunu is a Tamil king, and he secured the Island for Tamils. An Indian associate who participated in the war of Appe Aanduwa with Tamils wrote in his book that Langkang spent $400B on the war with Tamils. Ranil has paid China a dear price with country’s assets to secure the Vetro in UN against their Genocide crimes his comrades did. Royal has deposited $30B in their banks stolen from the Government as commission. Country is in a $55B loan. How much in total they pledged to steal Tamils Lands? What Evil means by that line is, the protestors are inexperienced juveniles, but he is an expert so he will beat any calls from Tamils for negotiation for peaceful co-existence in the island. He is not interested in settling the problems the country has been facing for 75 years or resorting to its status as the wealthiest country in the hemisphere and the first and matured democracy. He is only scheming to fool the Western world by calling that the protestors are henchmen of Tamil Diaspora.

What is Venomous Ranil’s thinking is. if he can re-direct the Sinhala Protesters on Tamils by spewing unlimited racism, he can easily label the protest as “Revived LTTE Terrorism” and use the Military to kill all the protesters and innocent Tamils, with his emergency declaration. Readers may remember in the earlier paragraph that I had mentioned that Ranil was insulting Anura that he was using JVP terrorism to promote violence during the protest. This Double Barrel Gun technique of join the LTTE and JVP is for him to launch the Military on Tamils and Sinhalese who are protesting for the faults of the Appe Aanduwas accumulated for 75 years. He trying to explain the Sinhalese and IC that Tamils penetrated the Sinhala Population and have influenced terrorism on the name of “Systematic Change.” These campaigners all these times have been calling TNA as the front end of LTTE now wooing TNA for all party government while LTTE rump infusing terrorism in Sinhala population.

Let us see what Evil Ranil actually did by hijacking the EP position in the name of saving the country (like he saved UNP). Before we go deep into that we need to remind the readers here during the 2019 election time, we said here to the Hitler proposers that the people must be saved first if a country’s sovereignty needs to be saved. But the Hitler King went with China to secure Veto in order to save the sovereignty but now the country is gone to dogs. Ranil modaya is taking the same old Hitler’s boat to hell by declaring Emergency to save (wreck) the country. University of Kalyani’s students do not want to go there because Ranil’s White Vans are lurking around the university, early in the morning, just like Hitler King kidnapped and killed journalists and his opponents. Ranil wants to make this to appear that all these happening because of LTTE diaspora is engaged in infusing terrorism in Lanka, so he wants from IMF and World bank another $400B to annihilate the remaining Tamils in the Island.

Let us come back to where we left. When Ranil, New King, Old Rowdy King & Hitler king planned together to launch an attack on Tamils Churches on 4/21/2018, what was about to happen to Tamils Churches & tourist Hotels was known to all cabinet ministers & a lot of other MPs. This might include Cardinal Comedy too. India was warning the Appe Aanduwa for a month but did not inform the Christian public. Many Ceylon Muslim private citizens had called many officials and security forces, including Grama Sevakas, in their area. But the government iron fist handedly organized the 4/21 and killed the Tamil parishioners. Now refusing to investigate how the incident that was warned by India for one month escaped from the government’s attention. Ranil was the Prime Minister that time. He was in full contact with all security forces, privately & secretly. All of them were part of the attack & cover up. In fact, by a Muslim extremists political & religious attack in Langkang, not one politician was caught even accidentally. Instead, the politicians did not go to Churches. But at the PCoI, Ranil said he was not invited by SLFP for the security meeting for Six Months, so he did not come to know about the incident.

Here one should very carefully observe the fact that Evil Ranil did not do anything even after the incident happened and four years have passed.

    5

As Prime Minister of the country, he was aware of what was going on in the security system, But the dupe master Ranil opened his mouth first time at the PCoI, which was formed to investigate the incident after the fact, to tell that he was not invited to the security meeting for six months. What a responsible PM he was that time in saving the country, so he is one more time awarded a promoted EP job to do the same louse job! What a rotten PM he was for not having attended the country’s security meeting or not taking any action for not inviting to those meetings. What A pathetic, shameless liar! This is the man (Evil Ranil), saying now that the same people who bombed the Tamils Churches had invited him to save the country from LTTE henchmen, so he wants to save the country from, the protestors. The Joke is Evil Ranil was completely rejected by the country because his Yahapalanaya government almost lost the country’s sovereignty in that bombing incident. What a trick is a person playing in order to save the Rowdy Royals and finish the country off whatever Royals left behind but claiming that he is saving the country. Later, Ranil got involved in trying to deport FBI agents who came to investigate with other six nations, as were smuggling bombs to help the Jihadis.

TNA was very secret of all the dealing it was doing with Ranil, Including the Secret Solution. It was blamed TNA too did know about the Tamil Churches bombing in advance. Specially, finger was pointed on Sumanthiran PC, and his secret meeting with Hasbullah in Hasbullah’s house on the eve of the bombing, Sumanthiran travelling from Colombo to EP. Earlier Hasbullah had declared in the election stages for LC that there will be a bloodbath of Tamils by Muslims. Hasbullah was arrested later for calling OIC countries to bring economic boycott on Langkang for Muslim Ministers were being investigated on the connection of the bombing of Tamil Churches. That was the story of how Sinhala, Tamil, & Muslim ministers saved the country by setting up of their own attack at Tamil Churches on 4/21, with the help of a Sinhala Cardinal. So, this time Evil Ranil led people to think that Savage Indra had had a security meeting while Hitler was in Singapore and reliably informed him that the country was about to go to the Tamil Diaspora. In that meeting, Savage officially invited the Evil: “ Machang let’s get together this time and save the country from Tamil Diasporas stealing it.”

  • 6
    5

TNA’s Sumanthiran PC has been a dedicated friend of Evil UNP Ranil until about two or three months ago & Sanakiyan was a SLFP candidate a few elections ago. It is from them the real story about how Evil Ranil was engaged this time to save Lankawe from the LTTE inspired Sinhala, Tamil & Muslim protesters is coming out. Originally, Sanakiyan’s old SLFP friends opened up to Sanakian and he told Sumanthiran & others. About a few weeks ago they both had come to know that Royals made a deal with Ranil to take over responsibilities and keep in trust for them until they are ready to retake the government. Now Evil Ranil has invited TNA for an all-party government, which shows he still has trust in them. Colombo Media is talking about Hitler coming back and engaging in politics. So Sumanthiran & Sanakiyan story sounds like very reliable information. Further, neither Evil Ranil nor Royals have denied such a deal exists. That is a classic example of Langkang United All Party National Gilmart. Bravo Ranil! That is why the protesters have come to Galle Face, even ready to give their lives, demanding for a Systematic Change.

Neither IMF nor World Bank have agreed to any loans to Evil Ranil because they well remember the game played in 2016 & 2017 and then handed over many assets of Ceylon to China and India. Unless Ranil resigns, it is not Elon Musk, but China will buy the Ceylon for $45B. Sinhalese may like Ranil in the EP seat, but IC will not blindly give their Taxpayer money in the hands of the corrupted men. If Ranil is chased out of the Presidential Manson only any FDI can come into the country so the country can be rebuilt, without depending on new loans to settle interest & principal of old loans. So, it is up to Sinhalese whether they want Ranil as their president and wait until he hands over the Aanduwa back to Royals or chase him out, make some FDI to flow in, and rebuild the country. On the other side, Rowdy Mahinda had said he wiped the LTTE so why he should resign. On the 70th anniversary of the CCP, these two buggers said that it was Ma Tse Tung who got freedom for Langkang. Unless these guys put in Hague for the Batalanda Murders and Mullivaikkal Genocide, these guys going to give the country to China and deposit it in foreign Banks. I already wrote too, but again; all those guys whose houses were set on fire should be investigated to find why the people had that much anger on these people.

In the past sports personal from countries like Cuba, Iran, Iraq disappeared soon after reaching the destination or during sports events. Now according to media Lankans are disappearing on official visits. Few who went to purchase a Navy petrol ship in the U.S, and two who recently went to participate in Common Wealth Games are missing (Judo team ). We sure are creating records. Well done “Team Lanka”.

The time spent on RW is just waste of time . Anyone who does not know this simple
truth , does not deserve any respect . How RW uses his knowledge (if any) , his
experience in politics (if any) is no secret to anyone ! Why then we waste time on
him ? He is only a Politically Paralysed creature and nothing good will come of him !
Will he serve the people who have thrown him into the Bin ? Are we going to take
back what we threw into a Bin ?

SIRI LANKA (which should have been the correct name, but instead the name proposed by Indian astrologers was Sri Lanka. This was to conceal the name Sinhala Dwipa of the Sinhalese whose origin started with the marriage between a Prince of Koliya Clan based in today’s Kurunegala and a Princess of Rawana Yakka Clan based in fortress city Lankapura. Their son was the First King of Sinhala Dwipa. I have written evidence to prove the true origin of the Sinhalese. The ship carrying the Koliya Prince had started its journey from “Damba Droni” (the copper colour river basin) or “DambaDiva” (Diva means ද්‍රෝණි not දීප) and sailed via today’s Deduru Oya to Port Siriwatta. The name “Sinhala”, I believe, has been derived from the word “Sihila”. Before that, our country was called “Thapo (the land of) Rawana”.
What I tried to say was that Siri Lanka was once again saved by the Executive Presidency!!!
The biggest joke is that all the jokers who aspired to abolish the Executive Presidency have contested for the same post. Maithri, Ranil, Mahinda, Gotabhaya, Sajith, Anura and Dullas seem to have the notion that the Executive Presidency is for themselves only and not for their successors.

After being elected by venal legislators bribed by the Rajapaksas, Ranil took two weeks to visit Siri Dalada Maligawa. I remember that after narrowly escaping from an NCM during his slave government, Ranil paid homage to Sacred Tooth Relic by placing his forehead on the floor of the shrine room! Dinesh, whom I thought was a Buddhist, took one week to visit Siri Dalada Maligawa. Omalpe Sobhitha Hamuruduwo, who reads from a script written by his masters, said that the insurrection marked the end of the Sinhala Buddhist power. How many more people have thought this is the end of Sinhalese Buddhists?
This government was formed as a result of an insurrection that ousted the democratically elected President by undemocratic means. Therefore, there is no legality or stability in this government.
Ranil’s appointment as the President is a classic example of how easily the power is abused by Parliament.
How long will Ranil survive? The Rajapaksas will keep Ranil until the 22A is passed in Parliament and then bribe MPs again to remove Ranil and “elect” another Rajapaksa, most probably the incredibly stupid Rajapaksa offspring. We are yet to see whether Ranil has any counter-plans to abort the Rajapaksas’ next plan.

Where there are dire economic problems/ people will become easy targets of racism and extremism. This I have studied from some people vin far poor states in Africa. And knowing the nature of south asian mentality/ being easily brainwashed by myths and superstitions/ it s stupid to expect the miracles / from the people once they turn economically weaker by day. The dark clouds grow above the island ll not let little sunshine if hatreds would be more. 😶😶😶😶😶😶😶

There is nothing wrong with Sri Lanka’s political or administrative system, though there is a problem with the judicial system due to direct political interference. Our political system is intact. It is the dishonest, corrupt, deceitful and hypocritical political culture which should be eradicated.
At a meeting with the Election Chief, The Most Venerable Malwathu and Asgiri Chief Prelates have requested him to hold an election. I believe that the Chief Prelates have already formed a political party and the candidates are ready. Otherwise, the same corrupt and hypocritical lot will return to Parliament.
As pointed out previously, Sinhalese Buddhists need their own political party. Tamils and Muslims have their own political parties. The corrupt and deceitful have the SLPP. Hypocrites have the SJB, SLFP and JVP. Honest, talented, disciplined Sinhalese Buddhists have no political party. I can name eight men whose talents can generate a good income for the government. People like them and hundreds of thousands of their followers need a new political party. More than the politicians, it is Maha Sangha who failed the country. At least now they should form a political party under their consultancy and guidance for the Sinhalese Buddhist population.

Every Vihare owns a lot of land which is leased to poor farmers or or they work as farm hand.
Viharathipathies are either lessors or employers.
If you are one of the lessee or employee whom would you vote?
You would usually tend to vote for the Viharathipathi’s choice.

“Our political system is intact. It is the dishonest, corrupt, deceitful and hypocritical political culture which should be eradicated.”
It must be the most robust system to survive a political culture like that.
But, how come that in the past few years three prime ministers resigned under unusual circumstances, and more recently a president?
Is the prevailing system of queues an essential feature of the political system?

Dayan, a small quibble, which has no bearing on the rest of your article or its argument, but how on earth can you say that “JR Jayewardene … won the Presidential election of October 1982 CONVINCINGLY”?

If that was the case, why did he go for a referendum, waste the country’s resources, when a general election was due in a few months?

In fact, the complete opposite is the case. After boasting that he would defeat the opposition so completely, that the electoral map of SL could be rolled up for another ten years — after his post-mortem on the referendum results he announced that he intended to hold a referendum instead, & cooked up the conspiracy of the Naxalite plot as the reason.

Yesterday evening I posted 2/300 words nullifying Dayan’s extraordinary claim – via my mobile so no back-up copy. Later that night I checked if my post was accepted. A little after 1 am found 11 comments by Mallaiyuran but no one else. A problem had occurred with the comments section & mine seems to have been lost altogether.

No energy to reconstruct it & the urge to do so has vanished but if anyone is at all interested may I direct them to a long report on the referendum (part of) which first appeared in “Sri Lanka in Change & Crisis,” ed James Manor, Croom Helm, 1984, as “The Conduct of the Referendum” by Priya Samarakone (a pseudonym). There, it was superceded by a shockingly dishonest version of the same event, by Lalith Athulathmudali. The whole report was subsequently published in July 1988 by The Michelsen Institute, Norway, still under a pseudonym, as “Sri Lanka’s First Referendum: Its Conduct & Results.”

It was impossible to find a publisher in SL & for obvious reasons a pseudonym was advised. The writer had come up against gun-wielding MP Anura Bastian on referendum day. AB’s devoted actions against voters & polling observers won him special mention & a promotion to Deputy Minister of Internal Security (Home Guards).

Dayan, if you are still labouring under a false impression about the 1982 Presidential Election results, I urge you to look at a copy of the complete report by Samarakone.

Oh dear, an important typo to be corrected.

“after his post-mortem on the referendum results” should, of course, read “presidential election results”.

    Dayan!
Perhaps you weren’t here in 1982 & didn’t experience the 2 “elections” or follow reporting about what took place after JR’s post mortem on the PE results.
And didnt read any of the articles or reports after the referendum.

But surely you must have read Bishop Lakshman’s damning (sadly unpublished) letter to the English “Times” of 8 Dec 1982, which your own father (or was it you? I cant remember now) carried in the “Lanka Guardian” in Feb 1984.
That alone would have convinced you that the “old fox” was far from feeling confident about the PE results.

I’m curious to know why you assert the opposite to be true.
