President Sirisena, Control Ranil & Others Before It Is Too Late!

By Visakha Tillekeratne

Visakha Tillekeratne

Dear Mr Sirisena,

Reigning in Mr Ranil Wickremesinghe and others in your government team while watching your own moves

A group of women, to whom I too belong, wrote to you publicly on several occasions. But we cannot see you taking action on any of those issues. Our first letter to you was when you were being sworn in. This letter was titled “Do not betray our trust Your Excellency”. We are happy that you subsequently shed the “Excellency”. None of the leaders in this country can be deemed Excellent so far. On the second occasion we wrote to you asking “Yahapalanayak Thiyenawada?“. Here we were genuinely asking a question as almost in the first 5 to 10 days, there were wrong moves on your part as well as your team. We wrote to you publicly and privately since then, on a variety of issues. BUT YOU ARE NOT TAKING NOTE!! You too are behaving arrogantly as if you know it all. Though you are not so bad, already you have the makings of a Raja. You know whom I mean? This was amply demonstrated recently at a gathering for civil society, where you arrogantly brushed aside the protest against the Port City as a “show”

We have now come to the conclusion – Yahapalanaye thibuu beejath Nathi weegena Yanawa (the seeds of Good governance attempted to be planted are destroyed). Main contributing factor – you have no control over your own dictat, your PM and your team of Ministers at different levels. After all the apples in the bag are mostly rotten ones. Only difference is that they are piled on your side.

Ranil and Sajith @ Royal

Why do we ask you to control your PM, Ranil? Listed below are only some of the reasons.

  1. He is cockily going about his activities, as though he got you and this government into power. Not correct. He and his team came into power because of Sobitha Thero’s brilliant idea of the common candidate and the principles and policies the Thero and team stood for on the Platform – Sadarana Samajayak. CBK and Jayamapathy Wickramaratne were major players among others, who brought you in. You and a few others formed the common platform. People liked the platform with you at the helm. So you actually brought Ranil in. Not the other way around, If Ranil was left on his own, nobody would have glanced at him.
  2. His wrong suggestion No 1 – Finance Minister – Ravi Karunanayake. It is not a matter of brains, but Ravi being under a cloud. If and when the cloud was removed he could have been appointed. Considering seniority in Sri Lanka is a bad move. The bureaucracy is in a mess because of seniority. Eran W should have been Finance Minister – he actually ran a bank successfully and is honest.
  3. His wrong selection No 2 – Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. Who is this boy? Akila lacking experience and insight, has already made many wrong moves and the government has lost total credibility in the education sector.
  4. His giant wrong selection No 3 – Arjuna Mahendran (AM). A baby googling not gurgling would know enough about the conflict of interest of AM. Ranil’s partiality to Charlie Mahendran, the father of AM, nor AM being erudite and articulate is not a criteria for selection, despite Harvard qualifications. Many crooks have been nurtured in such hallowed institutions. AM leading the important sectors of banks such as HSBC and Credit Suisse might make him an eminent banker, but Conflicts of Interest must be considered as top priority, when selecting people for key posts.
  5. His wrong move No 4 – appointing not so competent and not quite independent persons onto the panel examining the bond issue in which Mahendran is implicated. Chandra Jayaratne has proposed an excellent panel instead of these persons.
  6. Not honouring his emphatic stance on the Port City. The following appeared in the Daily Mirror of 16th December 2014. Opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremsinghe said today the new government, which would be formed by the joint opposition after the current regime was defeated at the January 8 elections, would scrap the Colombo Port City Project. Mr. Wickremesinghe told tourist industry leaders who met him today that the project would be scrapped because it would end up destroying the coastal belt from Negombo to Beruwala.” What is Ranil saying today? Furthermore it is difficult to rationalize with him as he knows it all and is emphatic and dogmatic at times. At a recent discussion with civil society he brushed aside the port city staying there are some substantial penalties. But why couldn’t he say so on the 16th of December? At best he could have stated that it would be scrapped after review. Today the whole government is looking like a pack of fools on this issue.
  1. Friends especially old Royalists being appointed to key posts. There was a ripple even today that a relation of Ranil has been appointed to a post at Sri Lankan Airlines. At the time of writing this piece, it could not be verified.

These are only some of the reasons as to why he should be managed properly. Of course to do so, you must also be seen to do right. If not he could turn around and ask you about the moves you make. So we hope Sir that your siblings will not be given more high posts. It is enough that you have Mr Kumarasinghe Sirisena among a some others close to you, in high posts. Even this is too much.People are now fast getting disillusioned as evinced by the number of phone calls from distant places on the wrong doings of the Yahapalana Anduwa. We will not wait so long to get rid of a regime that does wrong, as we waited last time.

Very good explanation.. RW didn’t get mandate to govern, and RW isn’t peoples’ leader, I guess he has Genus record as longest served Opposition leader.
Anyway, it is interesting to see that intelligent lady writer used a Sinhalese slag proverb Like ” thibuu beejath Nathi weegena Yanawa “.. I like it, ha ha..

When are the people in the white coats coming to take this woman away??

‘because of Sobitha Thero’s brilliant idea of the common candidate’

It was CBK’s Idea of a ‘common candidate’ and she executed that plan via her contacts at the higher echelons of the party. Sobitha Thero didn’t even have contact with My3 until during the elections and did’t even know who the Common Candidate was. Only RW and CBK did.

And without the UNP Nationwide Political Groups, who would have campaigned for the President, Who sat at talked with other Miniority parties??? to get the Votes???

And Finally after the ELection who did MR call to negotiate transfer of power??

I remember she once said when Tissa attanayake crossed over its a huge blow to the UNP, That was a joke. Tissa attanayake was never elected as he is material the voter wouldnt even bother to go and put a cross.

Yes yes Sobitha Thero’s and team has all the Int Contacts needed to do the deals.

And look at the stupid points she has listed. A child must have sat with her to do this article

This woman must living in a different planet with lunatics.

The thinking behind a Common Candidate must go to Prof. Kumar David I think?
Taking down the Regime was mighty feat, in words. The secret selection of MS
may be the work of RAW thinking in Colombo who would have tipped the correct
contacts, is a guess. The Rev. came in later if I am correct.

      Ms. Visakha Tillekeratne

RE: President Sirisena, Control Ranil & Others Before It Is Too Late!

Ranil and CBK were masterminds behind toppling Mahinda Rajapaksa, by using the Common (Sense) Candide Mr. Maitripala Sirisena.. Please give credit.

Now what did the Sri Lankan Writers do? They did write something, but nobody came forward with Common Sense Phamplet. They were afraid of Gota’s White Vans. The message did not get to the people fully.Al least do it now.

      Just do It!

Mr. Maitripala Sirisena, put his life on the line for the Country to rescue from the Mahinda Dictatorship and corruption.

Ms. Visakha Tillekeratne, if you have any credibility, please write the Sri Lanka Common Sense Phamplet, just like Thomas Paine did for the Americans in 1776.

Where is it? I mean, Madam, the Sri Lankan Common Sense Pamphlet.

Excellent commentary, Visakha. I’m sure you are echoing the thoughts of many of us who had hope that this new administration will steer clear of nepotism, cronyism, arrogance and corruption. Alas, Ranil Wickremasinghe’s stupid appointments / decisions have fast eroded these hopes. The choice of ministers has been woeful, not to mention being partial to the UNP without good reason.

President Maithripala should scrap all the appointments and start from scratch. Ranil doesn’t deserve the confidence of the nation to be appointed PM – not with his recent show of stupidity and arrogance.

This article is the mentality of watching this govt.

It is already proven that Ranil Wickramasinghe should not be allowed to form a govt.

The best option for Ranil Wickramasinghe is retiring from politics.

The best option for Ranil Wickramasinghe is retiring from politics.

The only person who behaves like a Gentleman in the August Assembly. Never berates others vulgarly or insultingly. Has never frittered public funds for personal gain as MR, CBK and most others have done. Has never tried to deceive or tell lies as habitually done by other Politicians held in high esteem by these hypocrites. Very unfortunately, Ranil has had to contend with characters like Arjun Mahendran, Tissa Attanayake and all those others who crossed over from the UNP for the love of the country and these nincompoops believe Ranil should quit politics. What puritans we have amongst us.

What you say about RW is true, but he should take the responsibility and act fast without allowing the peoples mind to run riot with foolish statements given by various party. Further no cover up and maximum penalty should be given to hand picked people for betraying the trust he has placed on them and the public trust on the new administration. ONLY this could salvage their rapidly dwindling popularity of the new administration in general and RW in partcular

Gamini is diehard fan of RW. So I think if RW started it, he should also take the responsibility of today s chaos. Not a single man among the sharks have been punished yet – CB issue and several issues that seem to have taken ground the wavy nature of RW should better be made clear to the nation can help him further. Just leave politics and go home for his good is irresponsible actually. I think he is a very like clean but not matured enough to know who is who in politics. He just allows idiots take ground should not be made any further. He has to make public statments where it is necessary. People attack him perhaps not knowing the ground realities of each issue. Today media freedom has made it worse actually. I think MR and his goons to allow mobilise further is what should have stoped. Those who have cases or are alleged to have gone wrong should be suspended until their processes aer done. Germany s president- at the time his case was carried out, he was not sseen or given publicity by local press. This was the case in other countries too. Why to allow Wimal Weerawanse to be in active potlicis if varied accusations are levelled at him – and investigations are started ?

    Madam:
As one of those who have insisted from day one that we hold the feet of the current regime to the fire to ensure that they, minimally, prosecute those who have raped and pillaged this country in every way and ensure fair and just governance, I have a couple of questions for you since this is the first time I’ve seen your name in Colombo Telegraph:
    1) Would you please name the group on whose behalf you speak?
    2) Did that group ever have occasion to take the previous regime to task and if so when and on what issues?

I trust you will do the readers of this web publication the courtesy of a response to these questions and fill in any details that might be relevant?
    Thank you.

      Sir,
      In Asiyawe Aaschraya,
Politikkas preaches Something and Implicate some thing.
so we are not astonished of what is happening now like before with
      F KING..

DO WE WANT TO TAKE Mr Sirisena Or Ranil Seriously????????.

I think Not necessarily, as we are getting the same old Gal Banis in New Wrappings.

We have a adage In Sinhala, ” Ballanta Leli pol kanda Dunna wage”. [Coconuts with husk given to dogs to be eaten].

Now the present governance starting to give us the Same treatment like to dogs.
      TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT.
      Is this the ROYALIST theorem????????.

A1. The Medamulana MaRa Group. They pay us using peoples’ stolen money.

A2. There was no need for the Medamulana MaRa Group to take the same group to task.

I think there is only one “best practise” way to deal with issues of this nature.

At a point in time the Kraft cheese products were found in the market place with pieces of broken glass.

The company did not waste time dithering. It quickly admitted fault, removed all those who are responsible and paid compensation to the victims. That is probably why the company still exists.

Dithering Ranil shows why the guy lost 27 consecutive elections. In order to restore confidence with the people all the points mentioned above needs to be addressed straight away without delay. Take action now or lose it all.

None of the above reasons given by the writer amount to fact. They are but mere guesses, beliefs and conjecture, coloured through the prism of prejudice. Details are unnecessary, but the attempt is clear and that is to cause a fissure between the President and his PM.

The President is too clever to fall for it.

I think the government should be allowed some decent time to perform, not harassed incessantly over each and every trivial thing. This is what some media and some writers are now doing; almost as though they wish to go back to the bad old days.

What is wrong with old Royalists being appointed? Aren’t they Sri Lankans? And would the writer – if she were the Prime Minister – appoint someone she could trust to key positions or, appoint some unknown persons to key places?

Quote:”There was a ripple even today that a relation of Ranil has been appointed to a post at Sri Lankan Airlines. At the time of writing this piece, it could not be verified.”End Quote.

Even if true, compare this with the Rajapakse regime for sheer and excessive familial rule. Where was this writer at the time?

I don’t know Ranil, neither does he know me, and I am not a Royalist. I think this country and its people must be able to evaluate good from the bad (never mind the school they went to), clever from those who are not, and finally settle for the best. The country deserves it. It is clear many who make much noise these days simply refuse to accept Ranil’s abilities and play up his short-comings instead (who hasn’t got them?). Such types will gladly settle for someone of much less capability for a host of prejudicial and frivolous reasons. Ever considered how much Ranil’s predecessor contributed to the legislature or to the administration of this country? Is that the type this country wants in key cabinet positions?

It appears that those who make the loudest noise have already forgotten the past. That is Sri Lanka in a nutshell, and the country’s greatest Achilles’ heel.

Your argument that MS brought Ranil sounds flimsy as minorities would not have voted for Maithri, they voted for the UNP. But I do agree with what you said about appointments as Finance Minister, CB governor etc. He is making a mess alright.

  • 3
    1

Funny thought came to my mind when reading this article. I am in sync with what the writer has chosen to criticize.

If one was to ask Ranil he is likely to say…I can only play with the team I have because the other side is not interested in doing anything but delaying and confusing matters to prevent their criminality from being exposed….

Where were all these critics when the country literally went to the dogs and the ‘dogs’ actually ruled the streets. Anything the Rajapakses did was fine – BECAUSE they ended the war. Like that educated their kids, and fed them? The 58 lakhs that voted for MR shared this mindset.

I care about catching the crooks more than anyone can know. However, I am happier that my small block of land will not be stolen by a Rajapkse, who takes a liking to it. I do not need to bribe a Rajapkse just so I can bid on a project. I still might have to bribe someone!!
    This is still an improvement..

This article is written by a jealous person who is envying Ranil’s intelligence. He is a MR crony alright. When a new government is trying to keep upto their promises in the manifeso and carrying out a 100 day programme even with difficulties.

There is already a move by MR sponsored journalists, public servants, etc to bring a division between the President, Maithreepala Sirisena and PM, Ranil Wickremasinghe and this is one such attempt which will nit succeed as both these gentlemen know MR and his camp well, and crooked they would behave.

This lady, Visashka Tillekeratne must be commended for bringing up the dangers lying ahead, for the President and he has to take adequate protection if he intends to form the next govt. As she said, Ranil is
cockily going about his activities as PM of the country as if he was the man people demanded to be made PM and head of the Govt, ahead of the President . Few recent gaffes are 1) his recent interview with a
TV station was not prime ministerial as he threatened to shoot any intruders (Indian fisherman)into the territorial waters of Sri Lanka while Indian PM was readying in Delhi to make a historical state visit to SL and he gave haphazard answers for important problems like the Fishermen’s problems, Human rights violation by SL in the recent war
and muddled up the death figures in the war as against the UN figures 2) Called the NPC, CM a liar and he being PM of this country said that he will not meet the CM when he visits Jaffna but will meet some MPs.3)did not accompany the Indian PM on his northern visit to Anurathpura & Jaffna but witnessed a cricket match in Colombo, instead and the Indians
would have taken it as an insult as no high ranking officials accom-
panied the Indian PM to the North. 4)trying to protect Arjuna Mahendran
by appointing a commission to inquire and not referring the matter to CID and Interpol. Arjuna may be right but what is the use now as people
lost confidence in him and senior staff in the CB may not cooperate with him.5) trying to make a unilateral decision to call up an election
in June where most parties are against it and they were not consulted.
6)Abrupt termination of the Port city Project initiated by the Chinese govt. and there is certain protocol should have been followed when dealing with a powerful nation. There are many of such cases in a short time and the president should take serious note of what is happening
within his govt. People do not want to throw away their newly found freedom, taking high risks of their professions and life in some cases.
PM Ranil has proved his mettle in such a short time and what comes next is anybody’s guess.

RW wants to run the country with ” aliens”- and Royalists.Aliens include CB Governor, and his Advisor Nir Deva.If things allowed go this way there will be complete chaos in the country and supporters of Medamulana likw Weerawansa will have the last laugh.

According to this writer Visaka Thilakaratne, MS became President of the country thanks to the effort of Maduluwawe Sobitha, CBK, Jayampathi Wickremaratne and crowd. Ranil had no hand in his election.

She emphasizes thus, ‘You and a few others formed the common platform. People liked the platform with you at the helm. So you actually brought Ranil in’.

These Visaka Thilakaratne and crowd were the supporters of CBK then and turned to MR but had no place with MR. They were blind to Corruption under CBK. They were critical of corruption under MR because they were sidelined by MR and had no prominence given to them. Hence they went on to criticize MR. I concede that there are short comings under the present set up where RW is the PM, where these shortcomings should have been best avoided. However the current issues are nowhere in comparison to the corruption during CBK and MR. Besides the issue is in the open and nothing has been done to sweep it under the carpet as has been the case before. Further no one is threatened nor white vanned for exposing same. Anyone is free to highlight same. The media is not shackled and this Woman is croaking because they are all anti- Ranil. What MS has to be mindful is of this type of Advisors and their two cents worth, trying to take undue credit from the sidelines.

Before Jan 8th we tried our best through CT to convince the readers that they should think beyond election as the guys who were trying to replace MR were no better than MR – we saw that MS is not a strong leader and we highlighted the past records of Ranil / CBK / MANGI and other yahapalanaya guys – but we also faced the delima of offering an alternative other than MR or Yahapalanaya guys – if there was somebody who is honest and with strong leadership qualities that would have been a better choice – alas we do not have those kind of guys – present Gov. is evidently weak and does not have one single opinion on many pressing issues – koheda yanne male pol – is the best way to define them – At least if these donkeys can bring in 19th amendment before the expiry of 100 days – that would be an achievement because I hope this amendment will effectively curtail the ability of whoever who come to power in the next election will not be able to misuse power – until and unless we have independent commissions headed by independent , uncorrupted , capable officers we will not be able to eradicate corruption in the government sector – which is the worst cancer in the country

Some good points but the writer completely disregards the part played by the Uni party machinery and it’s grassroots organisation in bringing Sirisena to power. Venom Something didn’t go house to house or erect platforms to canvass for Sirisena. Please give credit to the UNP for that. RW has made blunders but the biggest blunder Sirisena is making is listening to those in the SLFP who actually insulted him and worked to defeat him. They are working hard to sabotage his plans for constitutional amendments and to curtail the powers of the presidency.

You are spot on this that selecting RW was the gravest mistake the yahapalanaya team may have done . We as long suffering citizens of SL ( at least for the last 12 years)
we managed to eliminate the most corrupt president his family and the hangers on.Nothing can prevent to topple a crooked leadership by the power of the mass . the present regime should remember that. RW can be discarded easily as the garbage of the Colombo city before RW comes up with more of his utterance AND arrogance.
He should remember he is the servant of the people of SL to serve for their needs not the other way round. If the politicians can remember the simple MANTRA the people are the leaders they are the people put these leaders on the pedestal to speak and do for them.
We do not need dictators. The unimaginable happened by the grace of god in January 2015.The change happened all because of the people, we DID IT AND WE CAN DO IT AGAIN. These politicians should remember that.

There is a somewhat organised campaign to bring divisions between P.M.Ranil Wickremasinghe and President, Maithreepala Sirisena. May be some journalists from print, electronic media, are also involved in this campaign, to discredit the Prime Minister and they are being pampered by the persons who are interested in same. In my opinion, the writer of this article also belongs to this camp and campaign and therefore he is trying his best to potray Ranil in a poor manner.

Eternal vigilance is necessary to consolidate our re-found freedom and nurture the democracy we are trying to re-establish. Vishaka’s comments are thus very relevant. The name of Paskaralingam has to be also included in the list.

However, these are not normal times. This is a period of transition. We are trying to transit from extremely bad governance to good governance. The entire system of governance was putrid and was manned by mice and bandicoots mostly, with few exceptions. In these circumstances and the poor quality of our parliamentarians, there were very few options available for the new government. It had to rely on old cronies and persons it could atleast rely on, to navigate the 100 day transition. However, this situation should not continue after the on-coming parliamentary elections.

I do not of course accept the aspersions cast on Ranil Wickremasinghe. He is the only person skilled, educated and wise enough at the moment to steer the ship of State through choppy waters infested with killer sharks! I was particularly very pleased with how he dealt with the Indian Fishermans issue in his recent interview in Thanthi. He is the only one who spelt out the issues clearly in very unambiguous terms.

While we have to view issues critically and voice our opinions, we have to be also realistic.

The fall of the previous government was a miracle. Let us all work patiently and wisely to ensure such a government will never again come to power.

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

    Excellent article Visakha!

In addition to your point about poor choices for key positions, including cabinet positions, it’s a pity that the likes of Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy, an eminent economist and former international civil servant with a stellar record, and Chandra Jayaratne, a champion for good governance, were not considered for pivotal positions.

I fully support your view that the MS government should quickly take stock of current structural deficiencies, and re-align the governing structure to support the change mandate MS got from the people.
