Asoka Seneviratne
I am a diehard supporter of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD). I personally hope that he be successful in meeting the gigantic economic, social and political challenges he is faced with. He faces the monumental challenge of fixing Sri Lanka from ground zero.
Those who follow Lankan politics closely understand and appreciate the efforts taken by the President and his team to repay our massive debt burden, increase government revenue, increase FDI’s, increase tourist arrivals, clean up the corrupt political culture, clean up the country physically, restore the Rule of Law, provide a more efficient government service and most importantly, through all this to improve the standard of living of all Lankans.
To most Sri Lankans, the very visible achievement of the AKD administration so far is the bringing to justice those who robbed our nation on large scale and the attempts to separate the Law Enforcement and Judicial branches from the Political establishment as called for by the constitution. The nonseparation of these two branches from the political establishment was the single most factor that mass scale corruption raised head in our land.
But to retain the huge political capital President AKD enjoys and rightly so, progress must be seen at the local levels soon. Failure to do so will be quickly taken advantage of by the joint opposition thanks to the volatile Sri Lankan electorate.
I was in Lanka twice this year and want to highlight a few issues I witnessed that have quick fixes. Granted infrastructure improvements take time, but millions of people do not understand this or don’t care to understand. They expect quick results.
The main entrance / check-in lounge of Colombo airport. Lights and ventilation louvres are filled with dirt and dust, The check in desks are dirty and in need of repair, the check-in staff are extremely slow and the fact that they continue to talk to each other on irrelevant matters while doing their job further delays the check-in process. Most airports in the world in the developed nations, the check-in staff stand up while doing their job and this helps faster check-ins.
Most frustrating thing is at the passenger arrival immigration area. Why do they not have one single long line with a person to direct travelers to immigration desk beats me. Instead, they have multiple lines, some long, some short, so arriving passengers are constantly jumping from line to line seeking faster clearance. This does not bode well as first impressions of the country. The place looks chaotic. These are minor issues in the larger scale of things, but all small things add up.
Almost all the above are direct responsibilities of airport management. But the public does not see it that way. They would tend to think “who runs this country?”
Remember details, cleanliness, efficiency and order matter, and we are a tourist driven nation.
While on Colombo airport, the vehicle arrival area at the departure lounge… Why is it that there is no traffic controller or two there to manage the vehicle flow. The place is chaotic and one or two traffic controllers with a whistle can do great deal of good. It is even better with a blow horn or a public address system to clear vehicle faster. Simple stuff not done.
One can argue that the impact of Colombo airport on average Lankan is minimal. But We are a country dying to attract more tourists and first impressions matter. This starts at the airport.
During my many visits to SL over 40 year, numerous are the times returning tourists make fun of our country in terms of chaotic and disorganized situations. They carry this negative info back home too. Many of these can be resolved by the airport management who should have a keen focus on high standards.
Moving on to another public facility… The roads and traffic control system. Some of the DEAD traffic lights last year and before are still dead. High level Road/Stanley Tillakaratne intersection at Nugegoda traffic lights are still dead. Several years ago, at old road Pannipitiya / Malabe Road intersection was fitted with a set of expensive traffic light. Just a year or so later they died. This could have been about 3 years ago. They are still dead. At Nugegoda, Kohuwala junction, underneath the new overpass, traffic lights are dead. Last years too they were dead, but somebody wrote they were working then but not now.
On Battaramulla – Borella road at Battaramulla, there is the main intersection that turns into the Immigration/passport building is total chaos. Worse there is a massive ministerial building too right there. Millions of poor average Lankans cross here to get passports and ID cards. Installing a set of traffic lights must be a priority or at least have a traffic police officer throughout the day.
I had to go to a police station near Battaramulla. Had to pay some rupees for a report. They were out of Receipt books and had to wait two hours till a receipt book would arrive.
My mother passed away recently at home. A doctor visited to certify her death. After that the local grama sevaka had to be notified. Luckily she was there on that day, but she only comes on a few days of the week. With Grama Sevaka’ signature, you need to go to AGA’s or AG’s office. They had shut the door and gone at 4PM. After finding out the contact of the person who needs to sign, made a call. She told my brother to come to her house within 30 minutes, which was impossible at that rush hour.
Then she needed 4 copies of the paperwork which meant my brother had to travel looking for a copy place and return to her. While all this was going on my mother’s dead body was lying on bed. Imagine a poor person who cannot afford money or a three-wheeler having to go through all this with a rotting dead body lying at home.
Now these are not new issues. Not at all. These are age-old issues inherited by the AKD administration. But it is up to the new government to start working on these and similar issues that have a direct impact on people’s life every day, sooner than later.
Indeed, these are among the tens of thousand of issues face by President AKD and his team of a country that has been allowed to rot by previous administrations. The responsibility of many of these local issues is the responsibility of the local governments and heads of organizations. But the buck stops with the central government.
But are the newly elected members of local bodies in sync with the glorious vision of our President? This is a gigantic issue. How can all the good things done and to be done by the central government trickle down to the everyday Lankans at the local level fast?
The bottom line is that President AKD needs a lot of smart people to implement the much-needed reforms. With thousands of smart, educated, experienced Lankans leaving the shores,
the challenge becomes even worse.
The good news is that at least much of these local/central government public services will improve with digitalization. The faster President AKD implement these, the lesser the joint opposition can poke holes to his administration. Remember a volatile electorate can change quickly.

“Public Must Witness Real Progress At Local Level Fast!”
Won’t be long now, sure in matter of weeks President will publish all those files that he carted during the election time in his car boot pertaining to mega scale plundering former politicians did to rob the country of Billions not in Sri Lankan Rs in US $. This been the Government of honesty and openness President will bring the receipts and proof for all to see that he has in possession. And he will make sure all the looted funds will be returned to Sri Lanka. Hard working and struggling Sri Lankans who voted for NPP will be in for a windfall of mammoth proportion, if one go by the numbers and amounts been bandied around the country that may be close to a GDP similar to Singapore. Immagine getting a 400 to 500 billion windfall. When present government politicians as I understand gave a promise to repatriate all the loot back to rightful owners Sri Lankan people.
/
davidthegood / October 6, 2025
Leonard, sounds too good to be true about the windfall. Citizens may be waiting for the repatriated windfall for their hard work and struggle.
/
Leonard / October 7, 2025
I’m shocked are you doubting what President said about the files and documents in his car boot that he safeguarded from thieving politicians and their cahoots. Shame on you 😀. All I hear is from the expats who complain about the West & colonial plunder but live in the West still suffering under colonials that spent time in Sri Lanka recently on luxury holiday with the money that earn from the Colonials in the West how well Sri Lankan super rich are doing in the country having a time of their life first time under Right-wing socialist government once worshiped Che and Rohana.. I’m sure time for underprivileged to share in the richers must be very near. I’m wrong to assume this? 🤣
/

Leonard,
Have you calculated how much each of us will get from this windfall? Is there a processing cost which we have to pay in advance?
/
RBH59 / October 6, 2025
To most Sri Lankans, the most visible achievement of the AKD-led NPP administration so far is its firm commitment to bringing to justice those who have looted the nation on a massive scale. Their efforts to separate law enforcement and the judiciary from political interference — as required by the Constitution ………………. are long overdue and give hope for real change////
But let’s not forget the long-standing drug business that has operated openly in this country. How long has it been going on? Who protected it? Look at the sudden speeches by Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, and even Namal Rajapaksa — now pretending to be voices of moral concern. Their outrage sounds more like a poor imitation of NPP members. When NPP representatives speak, it carries weight and acts as a real lesson for the youth…….
Meanwhile, dangerous drug networks are infiltrating our school systems, putting our children directly at risk. Where was this urgency and concern when the previous administrations allowed these criminal networks to grow? This crisis demands immediate, visible action — not just words.
The public must witness real, tangible progress at the local level, fast. People are tired of speeches. They want to see change — in schools, in villages, and in every community where drugs and corruption have taken root.
And when the Rajapaksas, Ranil, and others talk about so-called “religious divisions,” the hypocrisy is glaring.

Ajith / October 6, 2025
AKD is a President of the Country elected by the people. The people of the country was made to believe that the buddhism is above the law and rulers are above the law. Of course this policy benefited buddhist leaders and politicians but it brought bankruptcy for many at the end but at the expense of the Tamils. This also made the people to fall under the influence of drugs. I don’t think that the Buddhist leaders have changed and they need to change other wise the country will not move an inch. So, all those who support AKD and his team should commit themselves for the change of system where the victims of the past 77 years should get justice and make a change of system which include devolution of power and free from racism and religious terrorism.
/

Glad to hear that Asoka S is an ardent supporter of AKD as do many motherlike-minded people. I too wanted AKD to succeed in becoming the President of SL. We have had ENOUGH of the crooked deceiving hoodwinking politicians who were promoting racial and religious rivalries. Now we can see how much of drug culture they have promoted in this country. One has to be thankful to Ranil W for putting himself as a candidate in the Presidential Election thereby reducing the chances of Sajith Premadasa’s success.
Both Ranil.W and M Sirisena could have done the THINGS that we expect AKD to do in 2015.
Thanks to Asoka S for pointing out the problems at our major International Airport. On arrival by Sri Lankan Airlines few days ago we had to climb down the steps to get into a bus. It is difficult for the elderly passengers carrying the hand luggages. Airport renovations needed to SPEEDED UP in order to bring the luxury tourists.

You expressed exactly what I would have written Naman! I still remember how I, along with a few friends overseas, joined a professional group in 2014 and visited SL just a month before the elections to support various sub-movements inspired by the then prominent National Movement for a Just Society (NMJS) to topple that heinous, horrifically odious Rajapaksa regime. Sadly, we didn’t get what we hoped for from those two pathetic clowns, consumed by infighting; crippled by inferiority complexes. Betrayal of public trust, conspiracies, and greed became trademarks of the Ranil/Sirisena duo—prioritized over the Yahapalanaya the people so desperately expected. The only reason I’d ever thank Ranil is for being selfish, envious, and malicious enough to siphon 17.2% of votes away from Sajith, against the advice of his closest advisors! Otherwise, that clown would’ve been President with 50.5% votes and I shudder to imagine where SL would be today.

We should not stop with thanking RW but we should thank those who brought this island towards racism and buddhist extremism (terrorism) which made this island to bankruptcy, with the debt over 100 billion US dollars which continuously increases with interest for the future. Of course, we changed the governments and tactics but it is not easy to get rid of racism and Sinhala Buddhist extremism.

I do see lots of new electric cars on the road this time around. It will help to reduce the AIR POLLUTION in Colombo. One hopes to see the three wheeler tuk tusk to be solely electric. Government could give loans to them to purchase the electric tuk tuks. Just wondered those who import luxury new vehicles be it electric or not have paid their DUE TAXES to the Inland Revenue department.
/

It’s not only the pollution that going to be cut electricity for the consumers as well because of lack of power generation and pie in the sky expectation on green energy. Don’t worry about Rich they got the money, ones going to suffer is the families making a living out of Tuk -Tuk, One Ex-Pat’s who is very concern about the environment when pointed out not everyone can afford electric vehicle in Sri Lanka so they will lose their livelihood his answer was well POOR always have to bear the burden. It is TIME that considerations are made for the pedestrians on the roads. The pavements are being used to park vehicles or motorbike riders using it to overtake other vehicles. “The main entrance / check-in lounge of Colombo airport.”
I still remember when the plane landed in South India. What a horrible smell. And that smell never went away, until reaching the five-star hotel.
By the way, do you know what the tourists see if they take a train in India? In the early morning, they will see rows of people squatting outside…. the train itself is filthy, but I will not get into that.
You thought Sri Lanka is shady. India is full of cab drivers (religion of peace!) hunting tourists like wild prey.
The worst experience will be if you are a female traveling alone. The YT is full of horror stories. That’s why virtually every tourist prefers Sri Lanka to India. Sri Lanka has some bad people, but India has 1 billion people, so it’s impossible to avoid the psychopaths. At the time I visited India, an Indian girl had been gang-raped on a bus and left on the side of the road with her intestines hanging out. The country erupted in riots.
So if you just look at India, there is plenty of hope for Sri Lanka, assuming the likes of JR can be resurrected.
/
asoka1958 / October 7, 2025
Lester – Your point about the nasty situation in S India is well taken.
But I am afraid I totally disagree with your comment of resurrecting JRJ.. While he meant well to SL with his 1978 constitution, the holes in it that killed checks and balances that started to rot in our political culture. Just think.. How can the legislature act as the power of the purse ( A check on executive power), when he and later presidents appointed hundred of MP’s as ministers, there by high jacking the Parliament in favor of the Executive.
Honestly in his 1978 constitution, left hand did know wat the right hand doing…
Did you wonder what happened to those valuable teak, mahogany and koss trees at the downstream of Victoria . Those were worth billions. Also his ministers knew beforehand the Kotte will be developed, many powerful ministers bough large swaths of land in Battaramulla, Malabe, Kotte areas and suburbs.
One of his powerful ministers ran a lobbying business on Duplication road in front of British Embassy that was fast tracking approval process for BOI projects for a price. There were dozens of valuable mahogany tree trunks in this building as supporting columns. The minister’s wife was running it. How do I know ? We used there services on the advice of another foreign investor who advised me not waste time going though BOI bureaucracy which was highly corrupt at the time but use this minister blessed business.
For a price, they would get line ministers signature that was a requirement to invest in SL.
So the ministers were allowed to rob with JRJ blessings. This minister was extremely close to him..

Mr. Asoka,
Ì must agree with Mr. Lester. South India is definitely a much dirtier place than Sri Lanka. Even though they have more money, they don’t spend it on essential garbage disposal but on unnecessary projects like metros to nowhere from Chennai airport. Also, Kerala has only 6 million tourists, much less than us. It is indeed passing strange that international acts like Taylor Swift manage to perform in that smelly hell-hole Bangalore. Why should we clutter up Katunayaka when there is a perfectly functional railway station there, and many friendly taxi drivers? Our pristine beaches and splendidly rebuilt ancient monuments can attract many more tourists. After all, our Buddhist monuments are older than anything in India.

None of Sri Lanka’s Ancient Monuments go back to before 300 BC. If you know better let us all know.

Mr Scot,
Yes I have read of the Indus valley cilization, but it is not Buddhist, unlike ours, and there is nothing much to see there, because it has not been rebuilt to the standard of the sacred Ruwanweliseya.
It is the same with the 13 arch railway bridge in Soth India, it is out in the smelly jungle where no one can see it, unlike our one built by our ancient engineers in Ella.

Is this not impressive for a 3,300 BC Civilisation? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indus_Valley_Civilisation#/media/File:Mohenjo-daro.jpg
By the way, I assume that you may be using Google Translate, however the Bridge in Ella was built in 1921 by Sri Lankans under the Supervision of British Engineers Harold Cuthbert Marwood and D. J. Wimalasurendra; not exactly “ancient engineers”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giV_gU2SYUQ&t=94s

Not so fast, Scott. You have to yet to explain why many physicists are using Newton’s Law of Gravitation (F =G*m1m2 /(r^2) in their professional papers, rather than relativistic equations. Since by your estimation, gravity is not a force. But then if Newton is wrong on this point, many others are also wrong, such as Kepler.
Do you also believe insider trading is legal (as per OP) and Ranil had no hand in the Bond Scam?
You also claimed Gothabaya may have been directly involved in the Easter Attacks. Which raises the question of libel.

Amkumaru,
I am sorry to puncture your patriotic enthusiasm, but in the larger scheme of things, Sri Lankan civilization is nothing compared to the much older culture of India, of which it only a weak theocratic offshoot.
Asia produced many great civilizations, from Babylon to India and China, all contributing to science, literature, and mathematics. What do we have? Can you give an example of Sri Lankan music from , say, the 15th century? Even the British have some.
Can you name just one “Ancient Sri Lankan engineer”? Not Lester, of course.
/
amkumaru / October 8, 2025
Mr. Codger,
There is no Sinhala music from the 15th century simply because there were no recording devices. Can you prove that these British records are from the 15th century? I think no.
As for Engineers, surely you have heard of Ravana. Even Mr Lester has mentioned the writings of the famous archaeologist Professor Praveen Mohan, that Ravana built Sigiriya.
“Can you name just one “Ancient Sri Lankan engineer”? Not Lester, of course.”
Why are you always criticising Mr.Lester?

False. More mistakes/lack of knowledge on your part. None of your LTTE/Marxist friends will correct you, since they want to re-write the history to match the “fake-state” narrative. Anuradhapura – 4th century BC, and other places like Ritigala, and Pomparippu – 5th and 6th century BC.
Have you heard the phrase, “sleep with dogs and wake up with fleas?” That describes the state of one’s brain after engaging too long with pro-LTTE people.

A society cannot progress if its people are not healthy.
In the case of Sri Lanka, there are several solutions to this. Firstly, switching to organic farming , to reduce the incidence of kidney disease.
Secondly, refrain from eating white rice three or four times a day on top of numerous sweets with pure cane sugar plus alcohol (in the case of adults). In a tropical climate, this is not a good idea. White rice has excess carbs, which are stored as fat around the abdomen. Alcohol consists of mostly empty calories.
Thirdly, more exercise. The government should build many more gyms.
Health is a combination of genetics, diet, and exercise. The Sri Lankan diet is very different from the Indian one. Indians are vegetarian. They also use loads of unhealthy oil (ghee) in their foods.
The Sri Lankan diet is not horrible. If it was horrible, Sri Lanka would not produce Olympic medal winners. The issue is the obsession with white rice combined with a humid climate.
/
amkumaru / October 8, 2025
