Rajapaksa Says He Can Identify Parayās; Can The Voters Do The Same Please?

By Gamini Jayaweera

Gamini Jayaweera

In recently held UPFA inaugural general election campaign meeting at Anuradhapura, former President Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa very firmly stated that he could clearly identify the Thora (Seer fish) from Mora (Sharks), Mora from Balaya (Tuna), Balaya from Paraw (Trevallies), and Paraw from “Paraya” (?). As I have never heard of a fish called “Paraya”, I looked in the dictionary to find the real meaning of “Paraya”. The word was not in the normal dictionary but it was in the Examples of General Sinhala Slang Words in google. It is an offensive word for an “outsider” or for a person who is “not one of us”. “Paratti” is the female version which is usually prefixed to some other offensive word e.g. “Paratta Balli” literally translates as “outcast bitch”. In our school days these words were classified as swear words and we had been punished if we had used such words. It appears that Sri Lanka has advanced on cultural and religious values during the last decade, for some people it is perfectly all right to use these slang words in public debates. After all, the word has been used by our former President and therefore it must be an acceptable word to use in public places.

“Parayas and Parattis”

Having researched the true meaning of the words “Paraya” and “Paratti”, I have now realised that our former President was talking about two legged “Political Parayas and Parattis” (PP&Ps). I hope that the former President might not be offended as I have added the female version of the word “Paraya” thinking that he must have forgotten to mention it, as we have two legged Political “Parattis” too. The way the former President spoke at the rally, he gave the impression that he would punish these “Parayas” whether they were members of the UPFA or UNFGG if he became the next prime minister of Sri Lanka. It is obvious that former president is not referring to members of UNP, JVP, TNA, & DP as “Parayas” because he and the general public know that these parties are always represented different views to UPFA and opposed the way in which UPFA was governing the country during the last 10 years. So I have done a bit of investigation in to our political arena to identify some of these “PP&Ps” to educate and inform our voters about these people (Parayas) who should be rejected by the Sri Lankan voters in the forthcoming general election.

MahindaInimical Remarks about Rajapaksa

It is true to say that following MR’s defeat in the last presidential election, some of the UPFA members contesting this election from MR Camp, have made unfavourable and inimical remarks about Rajapakse administration during the past 7 months. “Basil is responsible for this defeat”, “Sri Lanka suffered an unfavourable position in Geneva because of MR’s weaknesses”, “MR did not have a plan to win the hearts of northern Tamils”, “By giving a ministerial post to Tissa Attanayake MR made a serious error”, “MR’s actions pushed India and European countries away from Sri Lanka”, “During Rajapaksa regime we have plundered enough”, “We expect that Mahinda Rajapaksa will also join our election campaign as a consultant”, “Don’t stop investigating Mahinda”, “The Good Governance regime is going on the right path” are a few of the statements made by some UPFA former ministers and MPs who are contesting from MR Camp in this election. I wonder whether MR was referring to these former ministers and MPs as “Parayas”? Will the Sri Lankan voters reject or accept these shameless “Parayas” who have got short memories and thick skins?

Corrupt Candidates

There are some other candidates in the MR Camp, who are contesting this election, have allegedly engaged in unprecedented level of Bribery and Corruption during the last decade to destroy former President from the Sri Lankan political sphere. It did not matter to them whether they tarnished the image of the former President, as long as they mis-used the public money to build Castles as their family homes, depositing large sums of public money in their foreign bank accounts, and sending their children abroad for studies, and wives for foreign shopping trips etc. There is no doubt that their behaviour had a direct impact on Mr. Rjapaksa’s defeat in the last presidential election. May be the former President was referring to these former ministers and MPs as “Parayas” in the UPFA inaugural election rally. Will the voters identify and reject these former ministers and MPs in the general election?

Drug Dealers & Murderers

It appears that there are some alleged drug dealers, ethanol dealers, and murderers are also contesting this election as candidates from MR Camp. Former President is well aware of these candidates who have destroyed his “good name” and brought chaos to the country. They spend millions of rupees during this campaign to ensure that former President will become the Prime Minister so that they could continue their illegal dealings with MR turning a blind eye to these activities as he had previously done. But it appears that the former President has other ideas this time as he has already identified these former ministers and MPs as “Parayas” and his intention is to take actions against these candidates and remove them as necessary if he becomes the next Prime Minister. In a recent interview the former president was asked whether he would put a stop to all wrongdoing including bribery & corruption by his own party members if elected as PM. Former president’s answer was “Yes we will ensure all corruption is stopped and a transparent mechanism is introduced to ensure equal opportunity to all.” But all due respect, this is an impossible task to implement as MR cannot become the prime minister without the support of these candidates who are contesting this election from MR Camp and they were involved in this dirty game for the last 10 years. May be MR is expecting the voters to punish these “Parayas”.

The Defectors

Then there are former UPFA ministers and MPs who have gained enormous amount of support from the former President during the last decade, have crossed over to MS Camp and UNFGG camp to contest the elections. It is fair to say that some of these ministers and MPs have crossed over because they have had policy differences with the former President. One cannot classify those former ministers and MPs as “Parayas” and therefore they do not have a problem with the srilankan voters. Some others who have crossed over during this election have jumped from one party to another several times in the past with the blessings of UPFA leaders. As QueenBee said “An honest man can never be bought. That’s why there are so few in politics.” Can we classify the former ministers and MPs who have jumped from one party to another several times as “Parayas” and should we reject them in the forthcoming general election? Recently it has been reported in the newspapers that Arts and Cultural Affairs Minister Nandimithra Ekanayake flanked by MR and former minister Mr. Janaka Bandara was humiliated at an election rally of the UPFA in Matale district when the crowd jeered and hooted at him. It appears that srilankan voters have no time for these “Parayas”.

Former Chief Justice, Sarath N. Silva

Then we have former Chief Justice who campaigned vigorously during the last presidential election to defeat the former President has become a strong supporter of MR in this election. Last presidential election former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva publicly apologised to the nation for a ruling he had given in support of former President in the “Helping Hambantota” case. During last presidential election campaign Minister S.B. Dissanayake said “Our former Chief Justice, Sarath Nanda Silva had recently expressed his displeasure over releasing Mahinda Rajapaksa following the “Helping Hambantota”case. He had also pleaded for forgiveness from the people. … .… Even though he is the chief justice he is accepted as a liar and a criminal who gave judgments for his own whims and fancies.” Do voters support the candidates who have got liars and criminals in their election campaigns? It is true to say that this episode has had a very negative impact on former President’s battle against Mr. Maithreepala Sirisena and hence hundreds of thousands of voters voted against MR in the last presidential election. Having destroyed MR’s image during the last presidential election, the former Chief Justice is now supporting MR to become the next Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in this general election. Sri Lankan voters are educated and intelligent. There is no doubt that hundreds of thousands of voters will again cast their votes against MR because of former chief justice Sarath N. Silva’s participation in his election campaign. Will MR and the voters recognise the former chief justice as a Political “Paraya”?

If Putin can, Why can’t Rajapaksa?

Mr. Udaya Gammanpila, a vocal supporter of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s election campaign recently spoke about the ethics of MR becoming Prime Minister after serving 10 years as President of Sri Lanka. He argued “If Vladimir Putin can become Prime Minister after serving as President of Russia, why not Mahinda Rajapaksa?” It is a good question to ask but not a wise question to answer because Mr Gammanpila is missing a very basic point when he compared the two leaders. Russia is almost a one party system and Mr. Putin is running the country as a “dictator”. Mr. Putin can take any top government position in Russia at any time without getting majority of Russian peoples’ consent. It does not matter to Mr. Putin whether he is the President or the Prime Minister of Russia because he is having all the powers to control the “puppets” who are working to his tune. So, Mr. Putin becoming prime minister of Russia was not a demotion for him. But MR’s case is different. The srilankan political system is also different. Even if MR becomes the PM he is not as powerful as the srilankan President who cannot be controlled by the prime minister. Surely, isn’t it a demotion for our former president? With all due respect Mr. Gammanpila, are you comparing our former President to Mr. Putin and Sri Lankan political system to the Russian system? Mr. Gammanpila, are you implying that the majority of Srilankans also want a political system like in Russia? Remember majority of srilankans do not want to live in a society where people cannot express their views freely without government interference. Voters in Sri Lanka are intelligent people and your statement may have cost Mr. Rajapakse hundreds of thousands of votes. Will Mr.Udaya Gammanpila become a “Paraya” if MR loses this election campaign and does not become the prime minister on 18 August?

COPE Reports

The reports published by COPE during the last 6 years, highlighted the high level corruption, inadequate public sector accountability, running at heavy losses by vast number of public institutions and no transparency in the government procurement processes. The following are some extracts from those reports: 2010/11 – COPE Chairman, DEW Gunasekera stressed that poor public sector financial accountability has become a crucial factor and poor attention given to the maintenance of corporate/procurement plans, audit and annual reports was alarming to the level of needing immediate rectifying action. 2013 – The three biggest losers, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), Mihin Air and Ceylon Fisheries Corporation (CFC) accumulated losses amounting to Rs 9.7 billion during 2013, according to the Fourth Interim Report released by the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE); 2014 – The COPE report listed a series of major transactions with inadequate accountability. These reports may have contributed to MR’s defeat in the last presidential election. Can Mr. DEW Gunasekara tell the Nation whether MR government had taken genuine actions to resolve these issues highlighted in the COPE reports? But the irony is Mr. DEW Gunasekara is still supporting MR in this election campaign. “There is no compromise when it comes to corruption. You have to fight it” (A.K.Anthony). Is it fair and reasonable for MR and the voters to identify the COPE Chairman as a “Paraya”?

International Coups

Mr. Wimal Weerawansa, another vocal supporter of former president always talks about international conspiracies against MR and his regime for any domestic political issues. In a recent interview Mr. Weerawansa claimed that the US and India jointly conspired to defeat the government of Mr. Rajapaksa. Has Mr. Weerwansa got sufficient evidence to prove his allegations? Does Mr. Weerawansa honestly believe that American President Mr. Barak Obama, Prime Minister Mr. David Cameron, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and other western leaders have nothing else to do but talk about and plan how to defeat MR in this general election? Does Mr. Weerawansa believe that the srilankan voters are unintelligent fools to believe his fantasies? Whenever Mr. Weerawansa talks about international conspiracies against MR and UPFA candidates, former president loses hundreds of thousands of votes. Will MR and the srilankan voters identify Mr. Weerawansa as another “Paraya” who has contributed to MR’s defeat?

Credibility of Candidates

It appears that most of the candidates who are contesting from MR Camp have tarnished their political image during the last 10 years because of their involvement in very high level of bribery & corruption, drug dealings, murders, and disrespect for the Rule of Law. This is a huge problem for MR to persuade the general public to vote for these corrupt politicians. During the last 6 years MR’s problem was he turned a blind eye to these misbehaviours by his party members and he had shown complacency, arrogance, full of ego, and greed (Thanha) to stay in power for another 8 years by calling the last presidential elections 2 years early. It has been said that “Thanha is the cause of suffering, and is also considered a cause of immorality and crimes such as theft, telling lies, violence and corruption. It can also result in fear.

Recently it has been reported that one of former president’s coalition partners and former senior minister, Professor Tissa Vitarana had stated “I admit that there were issues of corruption. We have already discussed the matter with Mahinda. He has assured that he will stop all corruption if he comes back to power.”

Can the voters trust these dishonest politicians? As Charley Reese said “Credibility, like Virginity, can only be lost once and never recovered.”

On a positive note, there are some credible politicians who are contesting this election. In my opinion, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe has made an error of judgement in his dealings with Arjun Mahendran case. He should have suspended Mr. Arjuna until investigations are over. By not doing so RW has given ammunition to UPFA to criticise him and exaggerate the problem about this episode in their election campaign. Nevertheless, we all, even the opposition, accept that RW is a decent honest politician without any skeletons in his cupboard. Candidates such as President Counsel Srinath Perera (Colombo), Dr. Harsha De Silva (Colombo), Eran Wickramaratne (Colombo), Arjuna Ranatunga (Gampha), Prasanna Solangaarachchi (Colombo), Anura Kumara Dissanayake (Colombo), Ruwan Wijewardene (Gampha), Duminda Dissanayake (Anuradhapura), and Wasantha Senanayake (Polonnaruwa) have demonstrated that they are credible politicians who can transform our parliament in to a civilised place where children can attend to watch parliamentary debates and learn how to exchange different views with your opponents, respecting each other’s views. Please note that though I have not given a full list of credible candidates there are many other such candidates who are contesting in this general election.

Hope the Nation will identify the credible politicians from the “Parayas” and vote them in to the parliament to represent us in the forthcoming general election. I appeal to the credible politicians to work in partnership with all political parties to bring different communities together and build One Nation Sri Lanka where all srilankans can live in peace and harmony. Hope you reflect on the following poem written by Larry S. Chengges about “For Those Who Believe All Is Possible” before you cast your vote on 17 August.

Whatever you may have believed;

whatever you may have done;

and whatever you may be in your life –

it’s not too late to change course
and begin anew…

A fresh start,

a bright future

and the wonderful peace that passes

all understanding,

are yours for the taking,

now and forever more!

A very good analysis of facts and truths about Mahinda Rajapakse and his Golaya’s. However, the writer has not included few others like Vasudeva who used a similar word to “Paraya” in the parliament, Dayan jeyatilake who is a liar. Though author concentrate on corruption side, he has missed the most important person Gotapaya who ran a illegal white van operation to abduct, torture & murder, torture chambers in various places, and the BBS Monk who were the main contributor to the loss Mahinda. The war against LTTE was ended during the time when Mahinda was the president. The main contributors to the victory were Sarath Fonseka, Gotapaya Rajapakse, former LTTE leader Karuna & EPDP leader Douglas Devananda and USA & India. Today, Mahinda is left only with his brother Gotapaya. Karuna is telling that he lost 300 of his soldiers during the fight with LTTE & LTTE leader Pirabhaharan was captured, tortured and murdered. Douglas told that Mahinda paid ranson to TNA MP Sivagilingam during last Presidential election. Mahinda needs to tell the truth to the people.

Paraya comes from the word ‘para’ meaning foreign. For example Paradesheen!
Vasudeva used a different word, utter filth, Pak_y_.

Rajapaksa Says He Can Identify Parayās; Can The Voters Do The Same Please?

      Yes, Yes and Yes.

All they need is a mirror so that can ask Mahinda Rajapaksa and his cronies to look into it. They will see one or several Prayas.

The DNA in their bodies is proof.

RE: Rajapaksa Says He Can Identify Parayās; Can The Voters Do The Same Please?

    Mahinda Rajapaksa,

You say you can identify Parayas. Absolutely. You go in front of a mirror, and you will see one. Get your DNA tested as well.

They are called Paradeshis or Parayas, or Para-Sinhala Dravidians, because they came from South India. The DNA in your body and your face is Proof.

The Parayas should read below for the scientific proof.

    http://www.readcube.com/articles/10.1038%2Fjhg.2013.112

Sinhalese and Tamils DO HAVE genetic connection to Indian mainland.

Read the Summary: …Through a comparison with the mtDNA HVS-1 and Part HVS-2 of Indian database, both the Tamils and Sinhalese clusters were affiliated with Indian subcontinent populations than Veddah people who are believed to be the native population of Sri Lanka.

In other words, both the Sinhalese and Tamils are Para-Sinhalese and Para- Tamils, and the Veddah people are the true natives of Lanka, the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

So, Mahinda Rajapaksa, you are a Paraya, Para-Mahinda Rajapaksa. If you disagree, why not get your DNA tested and show that you are not a Paraya.

      Amarasiri,

The genetic study you have cited has been superseded by that of Ranawana et.al (2014), which indicates that the Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils share common gene markers, the Sinhalese have South Indian gene markers and the Sri Lankan Tamils have no South Indian gene markers. This is an overall summary of a very complex study.

        Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

“the Sinhalese have South Indian gene markers and the Sri Lankan Tamils have no South Indian gene markers.”

Interesting, if confirmed. Can you cite the reference and the link.

If so, the Sinhala are truly Para-Sinhala and Sinhala-Speaking Para-Dravidians. Now the Para-Sinhala is a Gene Mix, an “Acharu”, at least according to the DNA studies. This gene mix will give an evolutionary advantage to those who have the gene mix because of the diverse gene pool. After all, the non-Africans have a couple of percent Neanderthal and Denisovan genes.

So, from where did the Sri Lankan Tamils come from? They are not from the Native Veddah Aethho?

“Srilankan Tamils does not have South Indian markers”

This statement is untrue. mRNA study quoted above showed Indian tamil are different from srilankan tamils as well as Sinhalese. However all three groups share majority of the genes indicating common ancestry.
What South Indians have less and srilankans have more is west Eurasian genes.
        Dr RN

It is worth reading on a blog called eurogenes explaining the individual genetic markers and their comparative ancestry among each other.

Mahinda Rajapaksa is very clever and well trained to articulate disgraceful, impolite and abusive words.

That is not a latest news. His vocabulary is full with dirty words.
He associates with identical companions like Vasudewa, Weerawansa and so on….

Mr. Maithreepala Sirisena and Ranil Wickramasinghe never utter such words like Mahinda.

That is the profound disparity which wise and educated people can identify and notice very well.

Unfortunately majority of Sinhalese entertain themselves by listening to those idiots.

“Parayas” story will disappear with the defeat of UPFA and MR on 17th August. Ranil W will be the P.M. and the decent SlFPers will join the government under a national government. The new government will have many decent, educated, intelligent members in the parliament some of whom will be ministers. Of course, there would still be some ruffians elected to parliament which is inevitable.
If the law and justice operates independently in fair manner treating all persons as equal these culprits will not survive in politics and by 2020 elections you could experience all these villians completely routed. This would be a most welcome change for our young generations to live in a country with respect and dignity.

However, all would depend as to how much strongly Maithree and Ranil will handle the wrongdoers committing fraud, misuse of state resources, misbehaviour etc in the government
and parliament without fear or favour irrespective of party affiliations, family connections and friends. Huge responsibility lies on the heads of Maithree and Ranil W.

As to whether the Sri Lankan voter is intelligent and politically conscious will depend as to who they make the Prime Minister. The main intention of MR to become Prime Minister is not to serve the Sri Lankan people but to suppress and destroy all remaining evidence of corruption and the killings during his regime and the members of his family. Some where in this article it is stated:”……it did not matter to them they tarnished the image of the President”. What! I am at a lost to understand the “image” the writer speaks of. All those “parayas” very well knew who their President was and they did not waste time to make any assessment; but got busy in making hay while the sun shines. Simple as that. That was very well proved when the ex President said: ” I did not care to oversee what was going wrong and allowed them to do the wrongs”. What more! Now having seen what was going on before January 2015, how do you classify the Ex President? He talks of others as “Parayas”; but how does he calls himself? I leave that to be decided by the people.

The “Election Fever” is rising by the hour. The people have seen the “Nomination Lists”; the “National Lists” and the “Manifesto” of the main political parties in the field. The Media, both print and electronic are playing a major role this time more than the previous elections. The “observers” and “analysts” claim the “VOTERS” this time are more “intelligent”; “better informed” and “capable” of making the correct decision. In general, I would say, both the major parties have brought in “undesirables” to be nominated to the Parliament. In that respect the “Greatest” number of them are in the UPFA headed by ex President. All the “Parayas” excepting three or four are nominated. Even there is the name of a “IRC” and one other person signed the nomination papers from the prison cell. To make a long story short; we see all the “MADAVIKARAYAS” (vagabonds)in the nomination lists of both the parties. Having presented us with such nominations, both the major parties claim to form the next Government with majority seats in the Parliament.

Now the “Ball” is in the hands of the VOTERS. What would they do? If the so called “observant”; “well informed”; “intelligent”; “capable” VOTERS decide to elect any of these “MADAVIKARAYAS” (Vagabonds) including their “Leaders”; we will then know who the “REAL PARAYAS” are. That we will know on 18th August, 2015 – not a far day off.

Thank you for exposing these men. Pity one of them was a Chief Justice. The most unworthy one and appointed by Chandrika. The election laws must be amended to ensure that only persons of good character become Chief Justices or Members of Parliament. That should disqualify a lot of people in the UPFA.

Pariah is an English world. OED gives its meaning as an outcaste. The word is derived from Tamil. Parayar are those who beat the parai (drum).

Heavens forbid !!! How the UNP/LTTE brigade has been stung by one word from MR. Compare that to the massive unfair comments and all the lies spawned by that brigade against MR. Massive anti MR brigade against one man. Why? Probably because he is the one man standing against them winning the election? What a sorry state of affairs, eh? Listening to the MR speech, it is plain he was replying to Ranil the mud slinger and of course it can apply equally to the back-stabber MS. Full stop. No point trying to be clever by trying to twist the meaning of the barb.

Economists have no political sense. They only know how to crunch numbers. Remember the big ‘financial crisis of 2008’? Means they can’t even do that properly. The article is highly biased, and of course it is pleading for votes in favour of a UNP victory. If you are talking of corruption, can you explain how R Premadasa accumulated a vast wealth just by being a politician? How it was found that valuable portraits at Temple treats were found to have been replaced with fake ones which came to light soon after his assassination? Heard of big commissions given to politicians by Mahaweli contractors, and housing projects? People have selective memories, that is the problem.

      Dear Mori,
Yes, I agree with you. There were bribery and corruption in that era. That does not mean that every other party come into power after 1980s should practice and encourage bribery and corruption.

It is well known that during last decade bribery and corruption have risen to unprecedented levels. It appears that the trust of the nation have been abused by the last regime to cover up and safeguard some corrupt politicians, close friends, influential party members, and opportunist MPs who have crossed-over from the Opposition with ulterior motives to support the former President. We need to stop this dirty game played by these corrupt politicians who have earned enormous amount of wealth within a very short period of time during last administration.

It is obvious that eradicating bribery and corruption could have been achieved during the second term of the previous regime if our former President and his government were willing to act with sheer dedication and determination. But they turned a blind eye to bribery & corruption, drug dealings, and murders.

Unfortunately, most of the corrupt politicians in 1980s are not contesting in this election. But there is a vast no. of corrupt former ministers and MPs are contesting this election from MR Group. Do you honestly believe that we should vote for these corrupt politicians because the government in 1980 also practised the same? No, we should not support corrupt politicians wherever they come from. i.e. UPFA, UNFGG, JVP, DP, or TNA.

As Martin Lither King Jr. said “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.”

    Excellent article Mr. Gamini Jayaweera,

    Thinking outside the box ……

It appears that even the DEVIL himself sometimes speaks the TRUTH.

MR is basically stating that all those who will vote for him during this “AUGUST” elections – could be categorized as PARIAH’s.

In this respect, I agree with him.

I wish to make an observation on his choice of camparisons.

All the fish he has mentioned have a distinct taste.

Everyone knows that Pariah’s HAVE NO TASTE AT ALL.

    So what’s with him – SENILITY ?

MR at election Meetings have been promising that once he wins at the next election, he will change the Constitution and bring prosperity to the country.

The issue is why is it that he could not do so for the last TEN years in power? Is MR serious that what he could not do in ten years, he is trying to full fill in the next five years? We all know that for the Ten years leave alone the country MR brought prosperity to his family and his catchers. Therefore people should not get fooled by MR’s promises. MR even promised the World and Manmohan Singh that he would implement the 13th Amendment, but never kept to it. How many times did he promise? MR is a bloody LIAR never to be trusted.

MR do not have to refer to the dictionary to find the meaning of
paraya, if he stands in front of a mirror he will see a paraya in real.

    Dear Mr Jayaweera,

An educated man like you who has been to Oxford should not dabble in cheap stuff like this. Have you read enough about Sir John Kotalawala’s vocabulary and what he has done and said at political meetings and elsewhere. Same with R.S. Perera and R.Premadasa. When 46 yr old Mrs Bandaranaike was going to enter parliament who , from the UNP said that once a month the chairs at the House of Reps will have to be washed? Ranil and Maithree will tell you if you do not know the answer. That was in 1960.

Much water has flowed under the bridge since Sir…but still …Rajapakses have done enough for the country for a grateful nation to remember them for generations, not just the 30 yr war …was it not due to excellent planning ?….Thanks to them and their vision, we can be proud of the developmental work in S.L.

I do not agree with the deeds of the foolish and immature, wasteful children of the Ex-President.

People like you talk big like Pandits and criticized some and praised others, without knowing the real past of Politicians of CEYLON when it came to character, nepotism, real education and behaviour, swindling etc. Open your eyes and ask your heros why Sir OEG , could not enter the country and died abroad, ask Rukman Senanayake why his uncles & / or cousins filed action against Sir John as reflected in the “Former CJ Sansoni’s Arbitration Case, Senanayakes Vs J.C.T.Kothalawala ,Knight…”Ask them whether the Respondent paid Foreign Exchange to the people of Ceylon as taxes on the real sum after the fraud of shipping Ceylon’s best no 1 plumbago as lower grade and receiving the balance for the higher grade abroad fraudulently.

Sir , please do not be offended. Those are facts which youngsters like you should know from pre WW II veterans like us. You may have split hairs to curry favour with your friends in the UNP/other….may be for a post for self or another later…who knows …the intention of using Parayas and Paravas after all was for personal gain as many would see. So MR and You are in the same Company. These are not new. Read the old Legislative Council and State Council Hanzards and hanzards after 1947, if you want to know the real beginnings of slang usage among parliamentarians. That is why Journalist, Arts Critic Gamini Seneviratne C.C.S. had to write that YOUR FELLOW OXFORDIAN Sir D.B.Jayatilake was the last Statesman that Sri Lanka/Ceylon produced.

“Rajapakses have done enough for the country for a grateful nation to remember them for generations, not just the 30 yr war …was it not due to excellent planning?”

I suppose you believe in fairies and you also believe Rajapases won the war.

Of course Rajapakses have done enough for their clan than country. Rajapakses will be grateful to the naive people of this island for being stupid for more than ten years. Rajapakses will be remembered for their despotic rule for many generation to come.

As I understand it this island is only capable of producing crooks and terrorists. Therefore you want the people to vote for crooks and terrorists and the future generations to bear with them.

      Dear Mr Kautilya,
Thank you very much for your comments which I read in interest.
Though I do not agree with some of the statements you have made I do fully respect your views.

I would be pleased if you could kindly read the two articles titled “Use and Abuse of Trust of The Nation” and “SriLanka Sports: Losers in The Interim” published in CT in the recent past. Please find below links to those two articles for easy access.

        Dear Mr GJ,
I , as a pre WW II veteran, am happy that I came to know a person like you through this forum.I am also thankful to you for those 2 essays of yours. While appreciating the way you handled me, again I want to ask you not to get offended due to the contents of my response. As a compliment to you let me say that your elders have brought up a well-disciplined citizen with fine Sri Lankan culture… probably belonging to the pre Sir DBJ era. You may have read the hanzards where he criticized the British Govt vehemently in his calm ,but eloquent style and also his answers to his critics in the same manner …specially during the Bracegirdle debates. Your reply to me reminded me of the Jayatilake style at once.
Best wishes to you and yours,
        K.

          Dear Mr. Kautilua,

Thank you very much for your kind words.
My late father was also in the British Army, Royal Artillery Division during the 2nd WW and he was a strict disciplinarian.

It is nice feeling that we can express our different views in a civilised manner which is currently lacking in our society.

May you enjoy good health always.

          Kind Regards

Your artcle clearly indicates that you have no knowledge about people and incidents in Sri Lanka then and now. Sir John, Premadasa and some other lesser known politicians have ruined the political arena by using un-parliamentary words. Especially Premadasa’s comment about Mrs. Bandaranaike and washing her chair and Sir John everyday comments and the one about the Queen of England. The most unacceptable comment the writer had made was the listing out some for praise. Had the writer known about some of these parliamentarians he would not have praised them. So it is best and advisable for the writer to first study about the people and events and then write as the others know better than him about some people’s character.

Thank you Kautilya, I shudder to think how ignorant the post baby boomer generations of SL are of the past 100 years of both Sri Lankan political history and the geopolitical history.
And Pariah is not a profanity in the English language and the origin of the word is Tamil and it means an outsider (think “foreigner”). The Tamil speaking people in this forum may enlighten us whether the word paraiyan is profanity or slang in that language or not.

      I………….TH,
Your name reminded me of AL Gore’s book.
Yes, as Mr G.J. who initiated the discussion wrote ,in educated middle class Sinhala families, even in my formative years, Paraya and Paratti were taboo. On the other hand, in the film “Podi Putha” of director Wimalaweera , the father ( D.R. Nanayakkara) reprimands his daughter using the word “Paratti.” I have heard school masters calling male students ” Balla” & “Paraya” when angry. When JPO was a Senator, in a traffic jam at Bambalapitiya , opposite Saraswathie lodge his brick red Opel Rekard van was hit from behind by another vehicle/a taxi(?). Angrily, JPO got down from the car shouting” Paraya, thowa Hamagahanawa karapu wadeta….”

All in all, I think the usage idiomatically boils down to the condemnation of a person or persons as so called ” ungrateful outsider(s). In public, linguists will not grade it as profanity. Etymologically, as you say with Indian spelling, PARIAH , its an outcast,no caste or so called low caste.

Take the word “Bugger” and read the Oxford D’ry for its various meanings. In some so called “High Class schools” of the old, in Colombo and Kandy, in every sentence one would have heard “bugger…that bugger…this bugger…” and so on. In my home it was never used. Take the word Tuppahige…the clan name of a group of Oebayesekera family according to thombus/Dutch registers. According to Professor Michael Roberts, it was the “ge” name of some families who were mixed…not Muslim, Malay,Kocci, Tamil,Sinhalese nor Burgher. But as Piyadasa Sirisena used the word, Thuppahi meant mixed or kalavam…or who aped the West.

A heuristic model( who, when, where to whom etc) will always help to judge the usage in any particular situation. The Sinhala “F” word and the words that Buddhist Priests use to bless us , “Sapa Wewa ” and “SUKIEHU” ,carry the same meaning and have the same etymology; it sounds funny …but its scary even to discuss.
      Thanks.
      K.

Since there are no Parayas in the UNP or JVP, and all the Parayas are in the UPFA don’t vote for the UPFA, that is your message right?

Can YOU identify the Parayas? Can you identify the Parayas in the history of Sri Lanka?

    Sanctimonious rhetoric disguising election propaganda.

Perhaps our beloved Ex-President was referring to the Parayas (or pariahs) much closer to home.

His thieving siblings who once controlled over 70% of the budget and ran the Government machinery with clinical impunity.

Perhaps he was referring to his offspring, the babys who’s jetset lifestyle, sports cars, flashy women and fake degrees was greeted with the public’s ire in January.

Maybe it was the “Haminay” who stole gold, took helicopter trips to Colombo suburbs and spent millions on formalin (formaldehyde) to resemble a walking corpse over the past ten years.

And last but not least, it may have been “Chandi Akka” who created the Devil MS and sodomised Appachi without lubrication in January?

With all these questions left unanswered, no wonder “Appachi” looks haggard and lacking sleep these days.

Ask Rajapaksa to look in the mirror and he will see the biggest pariah in SL history. Look at him, he is one disgusting vile pig. No class whatsoever. He looks and behaves just like a common street thug. Put him in a 3 piece suit and he will still look like a pig.
