The military security provided to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was withdrawn today, and replaced with police personnel.
According to the army spokesman, the new security detail for the former President comprises of trained STF personnel.
The decision to withdraw Rajapaksa’s military security and replace it with police was taken at the Security Council.
Before the withdrawal, Rajapaksa had a security detail of 102 personnel, which included five Army Majors and 45 Commandos.
Last month, Namal Rajapaksa, the eldest son of former President demanded to know on what grounds did the government take a decision to clip the security detail provided to his father. “As security deteriorates, how can the government justify removing Army protection of President Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s only leader to end the brutal terrorist war?,” Namal queried.
Meanwhile issuing a statement Media Secretary to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa Roahan Welivita said; “50 army personnel assigned for the security detail of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa have been withdrawn, today.
“Instead, Police personnel were assigned but they are not trained on VVIP security.
“Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa is under a life threat who defeated the world most powerful LTTE terrorist organization and this is the view of security experts too. This has been understood even by the general public. Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa is the only living Leader in the world who defeated a powerful terrorist organization. Therefore it is the public opinion that Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa should be given proper military protection.
“Withdrawal of 50 well-trained army personnel has placed the life of former President in danger. It is the duty of the Government to provide sufficient military protection to safeguard the life of Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa.”

When I met Mahinda during his presidency, he told me that he will never trust the police as majority of them are irregular force and untrustworthy. He equated the police to Ranil Wicknamasinghe and advised me not to trust Ranil and asked me to keep away from him.
He had trust and confidence in the army so much that he said he will only work with them.
One can understand why Mahinda is worried now. He is going to have sleepless nights with the police protection that he innermost does not trust.
