Ranil Attempts To Buy Time By Promising Yet Another ‘Leadership Group’ To The UNP

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe struggling to fend off challenges within and without the United National Party (UNP) that he leads with a crucial motion of no-confidence due to be taken up in Parliament tomorrow (4th) has issued a statement promising to hand over party responsibilities to a new group before April 30th.

The pledge, issued to the UNP Parliamentary Group, claims that the party’s Working Committee will discuss the matter on April 8th and 9th.

On previous occasions too, when facing challenges to his leadership, Wickremesinghe has used the promise of ‘restructuring.’ On one occasion a Leadership Council was appointed, headed by Karu Jayasuriya.
