Ranil, Don’t Flatter Yourself; You’re No W G Grace

By Vishwamithra

“Humans are terrible at predicting the future. We really overestimate what we can do in the short term and underestimate what we can do in the long term… If we can glimpse even a couple of years into the future, even that’s difficult to do.” ~ Bill Maris

PM Wickremesinghe

On June 6th when Parliament met, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe made a relatively lengthy but utterly uninspiring speech. His address lacked severity; it was devoid of any feel for the common man and his delivery, as usual, atrocious. He was never known for his oratorical skills nor was he ever reckoned as an average parliamentary speaker. He was well below that landmark of being average. Yet sometimes he manages to create some laughter with his dry and dull humor. Yet again, DS Senanayake, considered as one of the most consequential leaders of Sri Lanka, was never recognized for superior speaking talents either. To use Ranil’s and D S’s names in the same sentence is a great insult to D S Senanayake.

However, since of late, Ranil has been making references to quotations by some historical leaders; it was only the other day that he compared himself to Winston Churchill. This time Ranil Wickremesinghe made reference to one of the best known cricketing personalities, Dr W G Grace. Grace was not only known for his cricketing prowess, but also for his gamesmanship. Many cricket pundits say that if not for the good doctor, cricket might have remained a pastime rather than a great international sport.

Nevertheless, by quoting W G Grace in his parliamentary address on June 6th, Ranil could not have chosen a healthier or more apt one: ‘They came to see me bat, not you umpire’. But what Ranil failed willy nilly to mention was another quotation by an umpire in another Grace incident. Soon after W G Grace was clean bowled, he reinstalled the fallen bail on top of the wicket, looked at the umpire and remarked that it was a windy day; however, the umpire was keener in perception and wit. He said: ‘mind your hat on your walk back to the pavilion’. Grace met his equal and Ranil is yet to meet his, at least in the current parliament.

Ranil Wickremesinghe’s dirty politics and the dirtier fashion he chose to practice it is well-chronicled history. Never was he safe and secure in his engagement with more talented and charismatic leaders. Comfortably at home when his henchmen are below his intellectual and education level, Ranil might hold his own, but when confronted by superior minds and sharper intellect, Ranil coils down to mediocrity. That is the general verdict of the average voter. Wipe-out of the entirety of the United National Party (UNP) in the last General Elections held in 2020 is ample proof of Ranil’s political capabilities or lack thereof.

Ranil, more often than not, has indicated that he is not happy with the abstract notion of the UNP. Ranil Wickremesinghe’s first term as Prime Minister occurred in 1993 when President Premadasa was assassinated. Upon D B Wijetunga’s ascent to presidency, Ranil became the Prime Minister. And under the dual leadership of Wijetunga and Ranil, the UNP lost the 1994 elections and after seventeen years in power from 1977 to 1994, the UNP once again was relegated to the Opposition benches. It was in the aftermath of this defeat Ranil really showed his character and his dastardly conduct as a practicing politician.

Gamini Dissanayake the only UNP parliamentarian who managed to win his province (all three districts- Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Badulla in the Central Province) challenged Ranil Wickremesinghe for the leadership of the Opposition. Ranil lost. Never did Ranil forget this ignoble gesture by the UNP parliamentarians. Gamini Dissanayake, who was sacked by President R Premadasa for Gamini’s leadership in the famous impeachment episode, came back to the UNP and prevented Ranil from claiming the post of Leader of the Opposition which he thought was his as outgoing Prime Minister.

When the presidential elections were called thereafter, once again, the UNP voted for Gamini Dissanayake as its presidential candidate. Ranil was dejected and thoroughly depressed and went to the extent of throwing big money to defeat Gamini at the elections. The rest, as they say, is history.

Ranil Wickremesinghe’s capabilities and talents and their superiority are a myth and it is beyond the pale, to say the least. He was badly beaten by Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaranatunga both in and outside Parliament. Then the Rajapaksa boys ran circles around Ranil Wickremesinghe and when Ranil’s position in the UNP was challenged, first by Karu Jayasuriya and later by Sajith Premadasa, Mahinda Rajapaksa rushed to his assistance. Ranil Wickremesinghe may have forgotten who helped him in the past but the Rajapaksas would not repeat after him. When all the chips seemed to be falling and depression and distress was all over the Rajapaksa landscape, they made their choice as was shown in the last couple of months. And it was Ranil Wickremesinghe.

When the people were on the streets clamoring for wholesale transformation and system change and certainly not just derisory reform, when the fall was near and all alarms were shrieking, it was Ranil they turned to. Given the wicked demeanor of his past, given the countless occasions on which Ranil betrayed his own Party, Party men and colleagues and in the context of his illogical attachment to the Rajapaksas and their politics, it is certainly not surprising to see Ranil come back to assume the Prime Minister post in a parliamentary democracy without holding a single elected seat in that same parliament.

Such a strange political episode might seem as an astounding development in our sociopolitical culture, yet one has to remind oneself that Ranil Wickremesinghe is part and parcel of that dirty and dishonorable enterprise.

Coming back to the cricketing jargon, when Ranil Wickremasinghe comes to bat, little does the spectator realize that the pitch had been prepared by the Rajapaksas, bowling changes and field-settings are to suit Ranil’s obscene stroke-making and if and when he gets out even the umpires might not raise the finger for they may have been in the soiled pockets of these very dishonorable players. It’s not cricket! Ranil, when he came to bat in the first innings, was retired hurt and hurt badly. But when the going got tough, in this instance the weak, pretending to be the strong, ate into the pitch, the ground and when there was nothing left in the batting order, they were compelled to call Ranil from retirement.

Now he is occupying the crease and trying to hammer all over the ground without first having a game plan. He is trying to hook a well-pitched up ball and cover-drive a short-pitched delivery and being totally devoid of a planned and strategic approach to class batsman-ship, Ranil Wickremaeinghe, our batsman pseudo-extraordinaire, is attempting to face a lethal attack without even taking his usual guard.

From one end is speeding the economic hardships and from the other end is political reform. To face this lethal attack by the deadly duo operating from either end is no mean challenge. Experience, which Ranil Wickremesinghe can boast about, is definitely a must; but experience alone will not make you keep your wicket. Unorthodox batting and improvisation may well be the ultimate weapon that the batsman has to put to good use. Instead of scoring singles and twos and threes, a timely hit over the ropes may well hasten the process. A skilled batsman of W G Grace or Garfield Sobers would realize that, but a half-bred batsman in the low caliber of Ranil Wickremesinghe might fail disastrously.

While the country needs Ranil to succeed and score the final runs even in the last ball of the last over, the duo of economic peril and political reform might spell not only overpowering, but too dangerous and fresh.

Dr W G Grace was a cricketer whose service to the game of cricket is yet unmatched. Reputed for his all-rounder capacity and indomitable leadership skills, Grace was a graceful player of this game of ours and excelled in the most dignified manner and long before the greats such as Sir Don Bradman, Sir Gary Sobers, Len Hutton and the rest, it was Grace who occupied the sole status as real icon of the game. Only alternative left for Ranil is to carry water to the field when Grace is tired and weary, so that Grace or his worthy successors can continue to play on the game in the fashion and manner it is meant to be played- a gentleman’s game.

I am reminded of the celebrated poem by Sir Henry Newbolt:

There’s a breathless hush in the close to-night

Ten to make and the match to win

A bumping pitch and a blinding light,

An hour to play, and the last man in.

And it’s not for the sake of a ribboned coat.

Or the selfish hope of a season’s fame,

But his captain’s hand on his shoulder smote

“Play up! Play up! And play the game!”

Historical Leaders are make a choice, and change the future.

What ranil says is To say you have no choice is to relieve yourself of responsibility. and put the prices high and go for loan. and be obligation for lending countries. This not Tsunami all decesion made are wrong and end up in bakrupt. It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.

Many thanks for this brilliant take on Ranil, now playing the useful idiot role to the royal family (do we remember someone else doing similar batting, too, even more eloquently than what Ranil could muster, shortly after the war?). Yes, Ranil does boast of experience — but there is no evidence he learnt anything from his serial failures.

Sri Lanka’s food crisis is mysterious as there is no food shortage in the country.
The world is concerned about a global food crisis.
As per the EU’s Sixth Package of Restrictive Measures against Russia, there is no restriction for ANY COUNTRY importing grains from Russia!!!! (Please see Q&A under Transport.)
    https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/qanda_22_2333
As for Ukraine’s grain exports, Russia has offered to provide a safe passage via Black Sea provided that Ukraine de-mined the coast. Additionally, they have offered de-mined Mariupol and Berdyansk ports while exploring the possibilities of facilitating Ukraine grain exports via Turkey.
What I observe is, the Ukraine’s President and the West are not very keen on taking Russia’s offers. Therefore, the blame game continues.
Being the world’s No. 1 wheat exporter, Russia constitutes 24% of the total global wheat exports whereas Ukraine accounts for 9%. Benin and Somalia which import 100% of their wheat from Ukraine have the option to turn to Russia. There is no threat to food security in the EU. As apparent, limitations of Ukraine grain exports would not cause a food crisis. However, there are other factors that would cause a major food shortage.

Look up Mark Alan King and his gematria website.
He has confirmation that inflation and so called ‘shortages’ are being deliberately engineered by the freemasons.
There are various reasons for it, but on a spiritual level, they are trying to keep the earth in a low vibrational state, by causing as much misery as they can to real humanity (because our inner state affects the outer world).

The Secretary General of the United Nations is taking a commendably active role in securing a sea route for Ukraine grain exports. There are other possibilities such as consulting the leaders of the Collective West to ascertain which land route they used for weapon transportation to Ukraine which has been tried and tested umpteenth times so far.
Russian grains should also have easy access to the world food market.
I vehemently condemn the warning of the US to 14 African countries not to buy grains from Russia, falsely branding them as stolen wheat from Ukraine. Depriving starving African nations from receiving food from Russia is cruel and unfair. The conflict in Ukraine amply highlighted the double standards of the Collective West for the global North and the South.

Srilanka will have no food crisis ahead of us, if people would make their mind up – to rely on home grown veg, jack fruit, Del fruit, Maniok and all other yams they could rely on easily.

This nation is born to eat and stay talking about their eating habbits, while europeans dont give a damn to discuss what they eat while facing tight working agendas. They aim at productivity while bieng relied on a sandwitch for entire day while our PINGONAs waste precious time talking high about their meals.
      :
Concerns should be made only about the urban dwellers. Those who live in rural areas are the majority of the country. They should be able to produce more and pass them to the urbanites. That way, they can change the mindset of the average, that would always wait to consume imported products. Latter is a psychological problem especially in our communities. They dont prefer local products to the imported. That boomed the imports but making the nation eternally debtors.

SRILANKA s fall was predictable / unstoppable to anyone with sanity- long before RAJAAKSHES were brought back to power.

The newspapers, broadcasts and telecasts were once again filled their columns /programs with salacious details about RAJAPAKSHE war victory. They adulated Rajapakshes for no factual reasons.

Poor villagers risked their skins getting the PENISEs of Mahinda Rajapakshe tattooed on them. That was the level of their blindness. The culture was twisted. They started calling them ” POSH” for no good reasons. V8 s became known to th epeople, even if ROAD and CONSTRUCTIONs went on – why to import luxury, unaffordable vehicles if roads are turning to be carpeted…. even poor Bali island, people have no V8s or the like – ….. srilanken imports were caught by devils hands. All because no proper law and order was imposed by RAJAPAKSHES since 2005.
      .-
Their backpleasers became MPs of Pradheisya SABA….. artists and media men became their direct supporters. Those SUDA CREATION man produced country wife melodies similar to ” JAYA GIITHIKA” to a man, who looted the last cent of TSUNAMI victims.

    Could not agree more.
Rani is social deviant, have inner circle of friends like Sagala , Akila, Vajira and people like that. No natural talent but has strong family connection in politics and wear suits and tie. Looks wise pleasant compared to crooks like Rattaran and Kassippu Jonny. So he can hide his weakness and deceive section of some people in educated middle class. His western style is appealing to some section with slavish mentality.
He does not care about country a smidgen but sacrificed ” Aragalaya ” which was a practical dream of millions of people who wanted just society.
Even arrogant dumb man of Gotabaya knew which one to choose as scapegoat.
He was politically dead and did not get elected and came to parliament through back door. Accepted Premiership without any condition and put a cabinet of rejected ‘Ahindas’ just to get position.
Rajapakse family pillaged country and put Sri Lankan people into pathetic status. Ranil saved them in order to have some shine among people again.
Most Sri Lankans are fair in thinking but do not engage in politics. They are waiting for few protesters, University student and few in opposition to make it better while having arm chair discussion about politics. Opportunistic pathetic weak nation. It is the responsibility of 69 million of deceived people to correct their mistake.

There still is electricity more than two hours after I feared that we would be plunged into darkness. It is now 2.20 am.
    .
    PART ONE

    .
Never mind the darkness, with refrigerators not working, and much food getting spoilt the results would have been terrible. I may be among the thousands destined to die of starvation, food-poisoning or whatever.
    .
Had that happened, I still wouldn’t blame the Trade Unions who resorted to this action. There are two persons primarily to blame: Gota and Ranil. The former got sufficient votes to justify legal arguments for him to stay, but unless he’s the moron whom we now suspect him to be, he should understand that not even 5% of those who voted for him want him to stay.
    .
As for the latter, he just had no meaningful support in August 2010. I grant that there are some who believe what Vishwamithra doesn’t acknowledge: “Ranil Wickremesinghe’s capabilities and talents and their superiority” is “a myth” that a handful may believe, but the majority don’t.

    • 5
      5

Can’t the two of you understand that and make up your mind to go? Gota is supposed to have said this two days ago:
      .
      https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-06-06/sri-lanka-leader-vows-to-finish-term-won-t-run-for-re-election
      .
So that is how we are supposed to know. Could any reader who managed to hear this interview live, give us the link? The interview was not in Sinhalese (nor in Tamil, which is our other local language) but in this foreign language which not even 5% of our people are comfortable with. In any case “Bloomberg” is one of those media organisations which insists that we make special payments to see/hear what they give us.
      .
The young Minister in charge, Kanchana Wijesekera is a decent enough guy. But if he cannot get Gota and Ranil to listen, he should resign.
      .
I don’t believe everything that all our politicians say. For instance, I heard Sunil Handunnetti a few days ago equating refrigerators with mobile phones and certain cosmetics as being important to young people. Forget luxuries; the threat now is existential.

      PART THREE
      .
If I’m asked where my vote will go, even today, it is to the NPP, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t think. Support conditional. Given the realities of at least 20 million of us struggling to survive, we don’t think that all gadgetry is equally important.
      .
This is my country is what I assert. Not all 22 million citizens will express it exactly the same as I do, but all except a few hundred thousand stooges whom you pamper all others feel that way. You now want us to go, live elsewhere! Difficult!! More to the point, we won’t. Dozens phone me every day asking how to pass IELTS. Advice given free, and links sent if an email address is sent. The two of you had better see sense, and accept that your “Interim Administration” must make up your minds to go; and give us your time-table for departure.
      .
I pledge not to turn violent myself, but if you continue to behave like this, expect violence from others. Inevitable. You will get your desserts – and it won’t be pleasant for you.

Sinhala_Man: You would vote NPP, but don’t expect “Miracles” as do a large majority of that “23 Million” occupying the “25,000” Sq.Miles (65000 sq.KM) piece of land in the Indian Ocean. This country has been “RUINED” to its “Maximum”, so to say that it is unrecoverable. Yet, with quite a lot of “SACRIFICES” coupled with “WORKABLE and SOUND” planning and “DETERMINATION” to succeed by ALL, perhaps within a couple of years ( perhaps 3 to 4 years) it could be brought to “LIVABLE” levels, as I said, with “Sacrifices” from the “TOP” to the “BOTTOM”.

The BIG QUESTION? Are we ready to undertake that “ARDUOUS” task and journey?

        • 4
          2

          No, Simon, I don’t expect a miracle.
          .
And it is to the credit of the NPP, and some others like Harsha de Silva, that they’re NOT promising a sudden transformation.
          .
The chances of our being able to trace anything more than a fraction of the stolen billions are remote.
          .
There’s another man predicting a dim future: Ranil Wickremasinghe! now that’s for different reasons! he knows that recovery in his time is impossible, and so he’s preparing for the excuses that he can blurt out when his term is finally over.

Not long ago, you yourself thought that KADAMANDIYA turned out to be wiser….. is not that so ?If I may get back your attention to it ?

At the time Jamal Khashoggi was murdered and dismembered in Istanbul, hours prior to the brutal murder, they were discussing about a sacrificial animal – likewise, srilankens stay behind Rajaakshes would not disagree with them also in 2024. This was revealed by the press conf held by BP Basil y day. He begged people to stay behind them….. so would they… no doubt.. please discuss it with Kadamandiya people and get back to us …
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeBXc-k2sB0

Let s ask to JVP/NPP to enjoy the crowds as done before. The very same manner Sunil H enjoye dhis momments with COPE – because their rivals were attacked to be the bank robbers. 4

My friend LM: Certainly, as I said, “Kadamandiya” people have become and are becoming wiser and wiser on experiencing the daily happenings.

A few days back, we were discussing the Court Punishment given to Minister Ranatunga for extracting a ransom of Rs. 64 million over a land deal. To my surprise, they were all talking of the “Plea” Ranathunga’s “Lawyer Anil Silva made to Judges, requesting “Leaninacy” in awarding the punishment. The “Three” reasons were (1) His house was completely burnt on 9th May and that had made him distort. (2) His daughter’s marriage has to be postponed because she is mentally disturbed. (3) If a harsher punishment is given that will have a bad impact and unfavorable impression on the International Community.

The language and the terminology used on the “Lawyers ” to condemn him are unprintable here. That is a very good indication of “Kadamandiyas’ upliftment to “WISDOM”. Aren’t you happy about that “Upliftment”?

what kind of upliftment are you talking about ? To me what matters is the level of progress.
              .
Does your subjective observations reflect across the country ?

In fact, also yesterday, I was compelled to watch a SM video – that proves that KAPUTAs voluntary resignation from parliamentary politics is a sign, another beginnnig to new end. Did not you watch that video in which BASIL paid a sly smile is that was full of deception or trickery, as a slaved but sinhala untrained- journo posed him the question ” how he woudl get on with the NEW BRAND NAME “…. ?

Amidst Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, the issue of selling national assets emerges again. This time, Trincomalee harbour. If the one-seat PM Ranil Wickremasinghe tried to sell Trincomalee harbour again, he should be stopped again. Trincomalee harbour, which is situated in a strategically important location in the world, should remain with the Sri Lanka government for security reasons.
As for the food crisis and unprecedented price hikes created by traders, the government should intervene to reduce prices. As I said before, rice grows without fertilizer and Sri Lanka always had excess paddy harvests. Therefore, there is absolutely no need for the government to take massive foreign loans to import fertilizer. The issue is the lack of motivation in rice farmers, not the lack of fertilizer.
Sri Lanka is in a pathetic situation where even terrorists offer black money to get the country out of debt in exchange of Eelam.
Our Parliament is on auction. Sri Lanka’s richest man who was involved in some controversial trade deals plans to buy a parliamentary seat to represent his wealth.
I am surprised at the complete ignorance of Sr Lanka’s Defence Ministry on the article published by “The Hindu” about a terrorist attack.

Rice can be grown at high-yield without synthetic fertilizer. It has scientifically proven, for example, in Japan.

“Bottom-to-top irrigation with TWW can be considered a potential practice to meet both water and nutrient demand for rice cultivation in order to achieve a very high yield and nutritional quality of cultivated rice without necessitating the application of synthetic fertilizers.”

Three-wheeler drivers who don’t know the difference between hydropower and hydroelectricity and think tea is an “essential good” should not comment on farming methods. Tea did not exist in Sri Lanka until the time of the British.

Like Salvenia weed most known in Baira lake, eradiation of LESTER and his siamese twin , Mahinda Kahandagama would not be an easy task in our society. These men – no matter the chance is given their asylum rights to continue in western europe, but would never change their spots.
LESTER or the like BORN POLBURUWAS (a term being used in sinhala vernacular to name stupidier men and women) should be clear – BOOK KNOWLEDGE is not 100% PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE. In agriculture, it is being proved by SAMANTHA BADDA (a pseudo monk, similar to an european style Mode designer), in his UMANDAWA MODEL village came into being thanks to the huge amounts of funds being donated to him by RICH WOMEN in srilanka today. So called
philathrophists produced by SRILANKA, we can discuss separately

            1) LESTER has failed to provide us with LINKs supporting to his arguments based on organic manure above fertilizer yet today. – nevertheless book worm being rooted in UK soil, seem to have the audacity to mislead CT readers on „essential food items of SAs“

            2) What are the essential needs of Homo Sapiens /not sure, south asians are HS though ?

Drinks/Beverages: Black Tea, Coffee (the destitute would not be without their glass of „kahata“ – meaning, that is the cheapest before MR (nation’s honey badger) destroyed the nation.
Where I live – people prefer coffee to black tea in mornings but their national drink is beer.
Food: Rice and Curry, white bread and varied other breads and various other dishes being used in south asian region

My elders had tea, rubber, coconut, rice and all other spice crops and I enjoyed then my day with cinammon peelers that did their job in their huts (made waththa pahala – backyards)

              Mr. Leela,

“2) What are the essential needs of Homo Sapiens /not sure, south asians are HS though ?”

You lack the proper brain capacity to understand what this question really means. Nevertheless, it is an important question. I wrote earlier that 34% or more of Sri Lankans fall into the obese/overweight category. The reason for this is probably due to the starch from white rice, excessive alcohol intake, and the pure white sugarcane (high calorie) used in various sweets. Sri Lankans are not alone. “The world’s biggest killer is ischaemic heart disease, responsible for 16% of the world’s total deaths. Since 2000, the largest increase in deaths has been for this disease, rising by more than 2 million to 8.9 million deaths in 2019.” There is a strong connection between heart disease and obesity.
Sri Lankans should stop eating so much white rice. That does not mean they should starve. Lack of rice, however, should make them re-think their diet as it is not a healthy one. One should not think about just “essential” food but healthy as well.

          Lester,
I know you’re pathetic, but don’t you even know how to lie convincingly??
“In fiscal year 2020, certified organic rice accounted for 0.11 percent of total rice production in Japan. The share remained at around the same level, far below one percent”

            Codger,

You said tea is an “essential” good. Yet tea did not exist in Sri Lanka until the 19th century. Can you explain what was going on in the other 17 centuries?

You said ancient Sri Lankans did not use hydropower. People were using hydropower 2000 years ago.

“Hydropower is energy derived from flowing water. More than 2,000 years ago, the ancient Greeks used waterpower to run wheels for grinding grain; today it is among the most cost-effective means of generating electricity and is often the preferred method where available. “

            https://www.irena.org/hydropower

Now you say it’s not possible to grow rice without synthetic fertilizer. People have been growing rice for thousands of years. This is what happens when you are a terror supporter; common sense is lost. Sri Lanka had a net rice surplus for thousands of years before synthetic fertilizer existed.

In case you didn’t know, tea was a luxury and was imported fromm China.
Also, by your private school logic, sugar didn’t exist either, or mobile phones. Does that make them non-essential?

If you know so much about the so called Japanese method of farming, why don’t you share it with the farmers and even on CT.
I am a coconut farmer, and when the urea scarcity started I personally asked the coconut department for the way forward and they were dumbfounded. Did not have a single clue as to how we can go forward.
The problem with our government is that they are unconcerned about the plight of the citizens. Otherwise, why didn’t they should have provided alternatives.
Now you say there are alternatives, do you not realize that your revelation further exposes the incompetence of the government?

Agriculture is not my specialty, that is why I make reference to journals. Do you know what a journal is? Journals are peer-reviewed by experts. Yes, you didn’t have a way how to go forward because your brain lacks gray matter, a normal condition for terror supporters. You only know how to swallow cyanide or self-detonate when Fat Pig claps his hands.
Now here is what they found in Japan. They were able to grow rice in formerly fertilized fields, using just residue from the field, even though a given field had been left unused for 60 years. The yield was up to 80% of what was achieved with normal synthetic fertilizer. This leaves no doubt that chemical fertilizer is the source of kidney disease and who knows what other illness. Also, Sri Lankans could use this method of rice harvesting rather than protesting over food shortages.

A scientific journal is not hearsay.

Neither are you, as by your own admission, you are a failed coconut farmer. By your own admission, you are a failure, so either (1) you lack sufficient knowledge, (2) you lack intellectual capacity to process data (3) a combination of both.

A high yield and nutritional quality of brown rice could be achieved by continuous TWW
irrigation without any fertilizer application, especially in BI, which was superior to both TI and
the conventional irrigation method. Nevertheless, monitoring P in the soil after each season is
still recommended to determine whether the application of P fertilizers is required in subsequent
              growing seasons.
              • No hazardous metals accumulated in the soil or in the harvested rice when the soil was used
repeatedly with continuous TWW irrigation. However, monitoring heavy metals in the soil and
brown rice every season is highly recommended to fully characterize the effects of TWW irrigation.

      Champa,
      1. “As I said before, RICE GROWS WITHOUT FERTILIZER AND SRI LANKA ALWAYS HAD EXCESS PADDY HARVESTS.
      2. Therefore, there is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO TAKE MASSIVE FOREIGN LOANS TO IMPORT FERTILIZER.
      3. The ISSUE IS THE LACK OF MOTIVATION IN RICE FARMERS, NOT THE LACK OF FERTILIZER.”
      Response:
      A. Rice no doubt grows in any clay soil, which is abundant in SL, with the Rain and Sunshine to go along with!! One needs to analyse the productivity or output multiplication of produce, which would be minimal (probably a little greater than return the SEED paddy Farmer used) in the circumstances how does this Farming family survive!! Primary motivation is absent!!?
      B. Fertiliser is an absolute necessity to ensure that the production/Harvest/Output is multiplied many times over in return at time of Harvest to ensure survival of the Farming Family and their welfare!!?? Is it not?? If we do not provide this assurance and comfort to the Farming peasant Families, why should these Farming Families “toil in the Sun and Rain to propagate? Rice Paddy?? Non-Productive exercise, and the motivation to cultivate is lost!!
      C. Item 3 of your claim, is answered by my comment B above

    • 1
      5

      (Part II)
Therefore Fertiliser is a necessary and integral component of Agriculture and Farming; inseparable, for productivity; Replace Soil Nutrients to enable the cultivation process is undeniable fact!!??
Whether Chemical, Non-Chemical, Organic or Biological format, is a moot point!! Convenience of process is the only element of desire in that respect!!!
For example, in the years gone by – 50-65 years ago, it was a daily sight, at the ‘Keera Kottuwa’ by the side of the Former Prince of Wales Avenue leading to the old Victoria Bridge over the Kelani, Bowsers used to empty Septic Tanks of Households in North Colombo city emptying their contents collected from the Households (excreta included), without depositing the contents at the Madampitiya Sewerage plant for Sanitary Processing, prior to leading them to the Sea/Ocean near Crows Island!!??
This service to the poor farmers of the Keera Kottuwa is performed for A FEE OF COURSE, determined by the driver, which the enlightened Drivers of these machines term as “Santhosam” (Gift/Graft whatever you prefer to call it!!) to help fertilise the Keera Kottuwa and produce many different variety of Legumes!!.
So Biological fertiliser replenished nutrients in soil, help grow, sufficient Legumes, (Thampala, Nivithi and Kankung)!!??

    • 1
      4

      (Part II)
There were many a tale how theses green leaves, helped the populace become healthy, fed of Legumes!! Claimed that it was excellent “Produce”!! An intrinsic component of good health, especially much needed nutrients of Iron, Magnesium and Sodium!!!
65 years ago, Morarji Desai, was not even heard of, in Sri Lanka!! Nevertheless liked the produce!
Climax of the outcome is that very many claimed that these legumes sold at Manning Market was much sought after by one and all, driving almost 10 miles (16 Kilometers) to get them fresh!!
Very good example of MOTIVATION TO EAT HEALTHY FOOD!
GR’s motivation to Organics, not sure what was the motivation behind the initiation was, failed because, we tried to supplant chemical fertiliser with Chines Rubbish and Not Colombo city dwelling excreta!!
He would have SUCCEEDED in his venture, if he had initiated to pull the “underground sewerage piping” out replace with the age-old Bowsers??!! Diverting them to the cultivation points of Rice!!??
Many Cheers for GR for at least attempting it and who knows, he may rejuvenate the Bowser system and make amends for the past failure?? A prosperous Organic Sri Lankan agricultural society??!!

It is very embarrassing when people like ranil quote British characters in such a careless manner.

Whether you like it or not, the British conquered half the world. They have proved themselves in many fields as world class.

Sri Lankans on the other hand cannot be said to be significant achievers when you consider global quality.

So when a corrupt and bankrupt lot quote from British example we should feel uncomfortable.

Ranil is no athlete and to compare himself to a world class cricketer as if both have similar qualities is ridiculous.

It is more ridiculous when ranil compares himself to Churchill, a Nobel prize winner and a man of huge talents. Churchill has personally fought many wars and as even a prisoner of war at one time.

Ranil baba is a coward who will never fight and will find excuses by saying he is peaceful and morally high ! We know all about his morals !

For heaven sake you little Mr nothing stop comparing your self to great people.

Just enjoy the perks of being a PM with your sweet little boys and play at running a third world county. We all know you and people like Esmon were just playing at our country, with no feeling for it.

This man’s (Ranil W) beginnings in politics started with his uncle “JRJ’s Introduction” to Kelaniya. That “Introduction”, as well as him being “Nurtured” in the “Ideologies” of the UNP under JRJ, are contributive to his “Unscrupulous” behavior in the politics of his career to date. In that respect, volumes could be written of his “DIRTY” career from day one of being an MP, Minister, PM, and “Defeated along with the total “Rejection” of the party he led to today’s “Unethical” entry to Parliament through the “List” and becoming the “PM” in the most “Disgraceful” manner. To say the least, that “Career” in politics is the most “Disgraceful” and “Unspeakable” of, even an ordinary citizen of the country.

What can we EXPECT or either “Believe” that such an “Unscrouplous” individual would contribute in any meaningful manner to uplift this country? It would be a “MYTH” to even believe it.

Dear Simon Mahathmaya (not mahaththtaya okay ?)

I am not supporting anyone, but new Premier has just started, how can we ever expect him to make wonders ?

Anyone with some sanity would give him at least 3 months to judge what the outcome to be assessed. Why and how would he be able to make wonders ?

Our people – calling them SINHALA buddhists but behaving like DONKEY (stubborn)- not practising the patience at all. No wonders, the meaning of pali written simple bana preaches are like greek to them, but how many of them go after them ? Think about ????-

      .-
Everyone can point the finger easily at JRJ for his 78 constitution, but it was 44 years ago. What have the successive govt incl. JVPrs in board have done to implement reforms to it. If India succeeded with shaping up the OPEN economy in that country, why not us a nation not even bigger to the size of a pouplation in Germany s NRW ( just 22 millions).

Our people are well at point the finger at others, but not having done their home work properly.

Dear LM; You speak of “3 months”. This “SCOUNDREL” had more than “30 Years” to do the job. Did he do it? He even RUINED the “Grand Old” party UNP. This is the “Genetic” trouble with S/L people. They tend to “RELY on” and “TRY” the “FAILED” leaders, politicians, and even “Religious Leaders” over and over resulting in the destruction of the country and the people’s lives. My friend, that “TREND” has gone. People nowadays are doing their “Home Work” better than ever.

          Simon,
          .
you and I are well aware of the fact that, current situation is unique…KADAMANDIYA people dominated nation was fooled as no times in the past…putting the blame on them would a mistake, because, they would tend to eat even COWDUNG, if it would have been offered to them with KALIAMMA blessings…
Now people should see it… that . those who believed, if RW denied the premiership, that the bugger would have resigned -was a joke…GOTA is adamant… stupid .

… however, he still believes miracles would save his soul…. even going beyond the levels of POLONNARUWA donkey, Gota is stupidier….. there is a saying, so long a deaf person would remain without opening his mouth, he could be considered as intelligent… may be that was what made.. FAKE viyathmaga eternal fools. Your kadamandiya style people should be pardoned, but JAYASUMANA led Viyathamaga men ?
          :
I am not a supporter to RW or any leaders in current day sl., but was RW ever be the leader of this country ?was he the one to make decisions in GOOD GOVERNANCE govt ?

I did not know that Badulla was moved in and Matale was moved out at some stage for statistical reasons..

      SJ,
      Good day.
“Gamini Dissanayake the only UNP parliamentarian who managed to win his province (all three districts- Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Badulla in the Central Province)”
      That is not right!!
As far as am aware, Badulla belonged to the Uva Province and the capital of that province – It consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala!
Matale is part of Central province, with Kandy as Capital and Nuwara Eliya- the Holiday resort!!
One cannot blame them, because, Geography and History are forlorn subjects in the modern education system!!
Education systems propagated by 7th standard educated, self-made egalitarian Politicians!!??
What else could one expect to be the outcome????

I agree that “(o)ne cannot blame them, because, Geography and History are forlorn subjects in the modern education system!!”

          SJ,
          Morning.
Yes. You are right on the money!!
However, one must not forget the priority subjects and the pas-time of playing book cricket when the subject matter (Latin except those following Medicine or law, Literature except those definitely destined to follow BA and Geography and History with BA and teaching profession) is of minimum interest!!!
I hope I have excluded Journalism, which along with Politics, who want to be saviours of the nation and effusing patriotism, end up outside the Welikade prison to NOBLY loot and rob the country for their personal gain and do not take responsibility or accountable for anything!!?? Including, building Mansions, so designed well, they want to DISOWN??!! THEY ARE INDEED CLASS BY THEMSELVES AND UNMATCHED!!!
They do not get sold and bought by parties as happened as recent as October 2018 – SL Rs 500 Million, they now gallantly (who says the 225 lack Gallantry (!!) – the only incident to show case that was the non-election of Ms. Rohini Kaviratne) as Deputy Speaker! Misogyny??
They now are evidently experts/specialist in handling the unwanted dollars!!!
          What a transformation??!!
Good or bad, Watch Ian Fleming Casino Royale!!!

that is the mirror image of srilanka.

They have no patience at all, but to attack him today. Not a single man, nor SJB leaders had guts to come forward, so was AKD, but to criticise as if RW is no human.
He has been doing a great job, like or not. I dont support politicians, if GOTA the man, they brought for the destruction denies to relinquish, what is the option before the nation ?

Writing articles either promoting or downgrading of individuals in the current political scene IS NOT going to bring SYSTEM CHANGE. It is important to write about what the ARAGALAYA people are clamouring for.
    i.e.
Dump the Rajapaksas and ALL connected to them–including Ranil W. I would not say that we need to DUMP all the current Parliamentarians. There are few GOOD ones. Can the author of the article name them .
I would add ERAN W; S.R. Rasamanickam; AKD as good ones to head a new Transitional GoSL until a new Government is formed after a CLEAN ELECTION that is devoid of criminals and uneducated.

There was a moment on 9 May 2022, when the Rajapakses might have had to scatter across the four corners of the earth, and Ranil stepped in to destroy that window of opportunity – so scumbag he is and that is more than what he deserves!

Why aren’t the writers mention that in the System Change we need to make discrimination against the minorities by the STATE eliminated by LAW of the country.
We are NOT going far without this very important point.
Our economic crisis is due primarily because of minorities bashing over many decades
Together we the Sri Lankans can get over the current problems
We need MERITOCRACY and Honesty in the country. Judges of the past who dished out miscarriages of Justice need to be penalised

It appears that Vishwamithra has an axe to grind with Ranil Wickremasinghe. To quote an excerpt from his article, he states thus, ‘Ranil Wickremesinghe’s dirty politics and the dirtier fashion he chose to practice it is well-chronicled history.

Vishwamithra implies that Ranil is comfortable with his henchmen, who are below his level of intellect and education. But when he is confronted by the superior minds and sharper intellect of the average voter, Ranil coils down to mediority.

      Gamini,
“But when he is confronted by the superior minds and sharper intellect of the average voter, Ranil coils down to mediority.”
Interesting view! I suppose Vishwamitra’s definition of “intellect” is different from yours or mine.

It’s business as usual. 1) Ranil has gone back to his letter writing following Covenant house protocol. He is requesting Commonwealth to investigate recent violence. 2) Many parliamentarians seems to be upset about the death of their colleague, but not about those, who sustained head and spinal cord injuries in Mahinda instigated violence 3) The condolence session is used by rogue politicians for politicking. Pretending to show empathy , they are playing , usual politics 4) Mahinda accused Aragalaya of violence, after instigating violence 5) Ranil is trying to scare Sumanthiran and Rasamanikam for bringing up real issues. (reason behind Aragalaya and violence by Mahinda) 6) Rasamanikam said “parliamentarians brought this on them selves by abusing constitution”. 7) Ranil, who is not even an elected member tried telling RM was out of turn when he himself was playing politics in condolence meeting. 7) When Sumanthiran pointed this to Ranil, he took cover behind his usual covenant protocol. 8) I doubt the duo can be that easily intimidated, by Ranil.

      Chiv,
Ranil certainly is acting bizarrely these days. His attack on Rasamanickam and references to the LTTE was as vile as anything the Rajapaksas could do. Still, Rasamanickam held his ground well.

      • 3
        2

OC, the very reason why Ranil is so furious about Rasamanickam is because he exposed the absolute truth about Ranil’s current dealings with the Rajapaksha gang. No one ever revealed it better than Rasa in the parliament or had a backbone to do so.

Ranil is a crook and trying to play the same racist agenda like Mahinda. Ranil proved undoubtedly that he supports the 20th amendment to the constituion which was used by Mahinda group to ignore the Tamils and Muslims. Even under the economic crisis you may wonder what the military, Buddhist Monks and Ministers want to open the Buddhist Temple in Kurunthumalai in Mullaitivu district which was built illegally after removing a Hindu Temple.

I truly feel sorry for Ranil for him having an illusion that he is the “smartest and the best politician” in SL. Ranil is not even an honest politician. Karu Jayasuriya recently declared that its Ranil who blocked Karu from taking legal action against the “miriskudu Kalliya”. Sanakkiyan openly declared in the Parliament that Ranil after proposing a women’s name to be the Deputy Speaker went and canvased for Siyambalapitiya. These make Ranil a crook who does not respect parliamentary democracy and above all, he is in politics to save his own neck. Ranil even recently attacked Sanakkiyan for an excellent honest open speech he delivered declaring the two-faced nature of Ranil. Ranil is a spent force politician and was kicked out of Parliament. He entered the Parliament through the backdoor using the National List card that too at the request of Mahinda to safeguard the Rajapaksa family.

      B, spot on!
If that kind of serious ‘constitutional felony’ can happen in our parliamentary system, then what is the use of this blinking constitution at all, even after 20 odd amendments!!!
In which planet that so called ජනතා පරමාධිපත්‍ය is protected when such back door entry to the PM position is open for an utterly rejected politician??

It seems that, in his keenness to do a good demolition job on Ranil, Vishwamitra has got himself into something of a muddle. The Dr WG Grace anecdotes that he has cited do not recall Dr Grace’s cricketing prowess but of how he CHEATED in a couple of games, with disregard to the laws of the game. So, Ranil should not be bothered to be told he was no WGG! Who wants to be likened to a cheat?
