Ranil, Modi Decides To Sign ETCA By End Of 2016

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced that both he and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi has decided to sign the Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) by end of this year.

Speaking at the Indian Economic Summit today, Wickremesinghe said, “the Economic and Technology Cooperation agreement will be signed by end of this year. Prime Minister Modi, and I decided that we should conclude this by this year,” he said.

He also added that the Free Trade Agreement between India and Sri Lanka will be further expanded, and will go beyond trading of goods and services, to investment and technology cooperation.

In September, Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Anura Kumara Dissanayake called on the people to join hands and rise against the government decision to sign the agreement, which according to him, will see the influx of low grade IT professionals to the country, resulting in the country’s youth losing job opportunities and Indians gaining.

In July, the Joint opposition called on the government to hold a referendum to obtain the public view on the proposed ETCA, citing protests by professionals including doctors and IT sector professionals against the agreement.
