Revelations In Britain: Lord Naseby Undermines The Received ‘Wisdom’

By Michael Roberts

Dr. Michael Roberts

Michael the Lord Naseby has set a cat among the British and international pigeons by extricating the reports of Lt. Col. Anton Gash (Defence Attache at the UK High Commission in Colombo in 2009) and presenting a summary review to the House of Lords. By immediately deploying Mandy Clark to interview Lord Naseby, Padma Rao Sundarji, the Foreign Editor of India’s first global channel, WION, drew upon his views and findings for the benefit of the world. This is something of a media coup.

In this excursus, Lord Naseby tells everyone that he went through the redacted documents very carefully and reached the following conclusions:

1. That the Government of Sri Lanka did not set out to kill the Tamil civilians who were being held in LTTE territory as human shields.

2. That there is “every indication” that there were about 7,000 civilians killed and not the figure of 40,000 that has been widely proclaimed on the basis of “a guess” in the Darusman Report [also known as the UNPoE];[1]

3. That the Defence Attache estimated that about one-fourth of those killed would have been Tamil Tigers because many LTTE soldiers had “thrown away” their uniforms;

4. That some of the civilian deaths were the result of Tiger gunfire.[2]

He also stressed that he had approached a group of university teachers in what he described as “a left-wing organisation” [that is, the organisation known as the UTHR] and their estimate was 7,000 civilian dead;[3] while the US Ambassador Blake had estimated a death toll of 5000 civilians on the eve of his departure from the post in Sri Lanka.

Both Naseby and the WION coverage were careful to indicate that these findings do not mean that the killing of certain Tiger officials who had revealed a readiness to surrender should not be investigated and charges laid. That noted, the coverage ended its tale by (a) emphasising the impact of large numbers of Tamil migrants in UK and the “intransigence” cultivated on this issue in the British arena and (b) focusing on the issues arising from continuing displays of the LTTE flag and the commemoration of its leader in the streets of UK and (c) intimating a concern that the British police tolerated such ostentatious displays by what was widely deemed to be a “terrorist organisation.” The background images at this stage of the coverage depicted Tiger fighters in battle gear and included close-ups of Velupillai Pirapāharan engaged in military activity.

One of the more significant facets of this WION video clip was the opening pitch of its male presenter who indicated that Lord Naseby’s findings “would be music to the ears of Colombo.” But even more striking was the headline text embedded within the video clip: viz. WION SPECIAL REPORT: UN FUDGED CASUALTIES.

A Comment

There is more than enough ground to consider that the review of Eelam War IV by the United Nation Panel of Experts chaired by Darusman was a flawed exercise because (a) of its slipshod methodology; (b) the ideological orientations of one of its members Yasmin Sooka and (c) the dictates of powers-behind-the scenes in the UN and USA.

But the world witnessed another singular travesty in the months and years that followed this report. The Darusman Panel’s claim (in its para 137 on page 41) that “a number of credible sources have estimated that there could have been as many as 40,000 deaths” became a definitive fact of 40,000 deaths in many quarters. This figure was touted assertively not only in respectable media outlets such as Australian Broadcasting Corporation, but also in the writings and pronouncements of political scientists, HRW agencies and frontline politicians in the Western world. One arm of Amnesty International even altered the words “credible allegations’ into “credible evidence.”[4]

In brief, one witnessed a propaganda marvel. The WION commentary identifies the influence of the Tamil migrants in Britain and their constituency power in generating such an impact. That is certainly one reason. But I suggest that we need to look beyond this current of influence and stress the interests of powerful players in the international order desirous of regime change in Sri Lanka.

But beyond that I reiterate a reasoned surmise that I presented in 2013 when reviewing a major (and neglected) study by Citizen Silva: namely that “such spokespersons are motivated by moral rage and retributive justice. They seek regime change in Sri Lanka – a form of 21st century evangelism that is imperialist in character and effect.”[5]

One cannot forget that the Charles Petrie report speculated that “more than 70,000 people may have been killed during approximately the last 6 months of the conflict”[6] and that Frances Harrison, ex-BBC and a HR campaigner subsequently, touted a wide range of figures in her influential book Not Counting the Dead: skipping gaily from 40,000 to 55,000 to 100,000.[7] That Yasmin Sooka had a podium role in the launching of this book is as significant as revealing. We see here a campaign mounted by like-minds located in some ideological cave in the Siberian tundra.

But what of the British intelligentsia and UK’s educated public? Did any voice raise a fundamental question: if there were 40,000 dead, how many wounded were there in hospitals or wherever?[8] The wounded invariably outnumber the dead in any battle theatre. In the limited physical space of the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915 8,709 Australians were killed (KIA) and 19,441 were wounded (WIA), making the ratio of WIA to KIA 2.23.[9] Ratios can vary in some measure in different warring scenarios, but the WIA is invariably higher than KIA and sometimes even over three-fold or four-fold. The US armed forces suffered these casualties respectively in the Korean War (1950-53) and the wars in Vietnam (!964-73):[10]

Korea     = 33,651 KIA against 103,284 WIA = so ratio = 1:2.8

Vietnam =   58,220 KIA against 153,303 WIA = so ratio = 1:2.6.

The blindness on this score in UK and the western world has been monumental. It appears that the Foreign Office and parliamentary circles in UK did not possess any persons with experience in war and that media personnel with a modicum of experience, such as the reporter Kate Adie for example, stayed silent.

The British ruling class is not that comprehensively ignorant. Such a measure of imbecility suggests that other factors directed the public readings of the Sri Lankan war in British governing circles. As I have never been in the position of a fly in the British offices and clubs of power, I cannot provide even a glimmer of an answer to the glaring question that arises.

Lord Michael Naseby has been one of the exceptions in this British firmament and he is better placed to point us towards the answers to my question.

[1] The panel was appointed by Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secy-Genl, and was composed of three lawyers, viz., Marzuki Darusman, Yasmin Sooka and Steven R. Ratner with Darusman as Chair. They did not visit the island. Their report is entitled Report of the Secretary-General’s Panel of Experts on Accountability in Sri Lanka and was released on 31st March 2011.

[2] “As indicated by testimonies collected by the UTHR(J) and other evidence, the LTTE went beyond the use of civilians as cover to the actual shelling of their own people on some occasions in order to cry “humanitarian disaster” – Roberts, “Revisiting,” 11 Nov. 2017.

[3] The UTHR presented a number of estimates on this issue and several of their early reports quoted higher figures (see Roberts, on Numbers Game, 2017). I presume that Naseby contacted one of its key members more recently.

[8] As it happens, the UN personnel in Colombo computed figures for the wounded in hospitals and detention centres during the months of May-June 2009. This computation is referred to in passing by the UNPoE: The United Nations Country Team is one source of information; in a document that was never released publicly, it estimated a total figure of 7,721 killed and 18,479 injured from August 2008 up to 13 May 2009, after which it became too difficult to count.” [paragraph 134, UNPoE]. The Darusman team do not seem to have grasped the significance of these figures.

40,000 to 55,000 to 100,000 to 145,000 touted by Rayappu Joseph and Siobhain McDonagh are incredible lies made up to bully a weak sovereign nation into submission. If that many people were killed, what happened to the bodies? The SL Government is not that efficient to have disposed of that many bodies in a matter of days. Besides, the US satellites have captured everything. Its just not in their best interests to publicize it since it doesn’t fit the narrative of 40,000 + dead.

Less said about Yasmin Sooka, the better. From the outset, this has been nothing but a witch hunt against a weak nation to gain geographical concessions. While pontificating to SL on human rights and humanity, the US/UK/Europe led cabal is killing at will in the name of eradicating terrorism.
    Go figure.

Alright, assuming we don’t accept body count figures which were produced by Rayappu, Siobhain, Yasmin, Rajiva Wijesinghe (admitted to BBC -7000), UN, Diaspora, …………………………………….. why don’t you wave your magic want and produce some figures?

By the way remember to tell us as to what happened to the bodies.

Many Sinhala/Buddhists who frequent this forum believe Sri Lanka is a strong country which is in a position to play a leading role along with other like minded countries in order to take US/UK/Europe to International Criminal Court.

Aren’t you going to join them in the forthcoming war against imperialism.
      Be a man.

        Native,

The UN country team came up with the 7,700 count at the end of the war. That figure is out in the open. Robert Blake, former US Ambassador to SL came up with similar number along with Anton Gash, the UK defense attache to SL at the time. No need for a magic wand. These are numbers quoted by non SL figures. These numbers were out there even before the so called PoE was put together.

I am waiting for you to tell me what happened to 40,000 bodies.

If you read my comment carefully, you will read the words “SL government is not that efficient” and “weak sovereign nation”. I never said we are on par with US/UK/Europe. I am not delusional. All I pointed out to was the gross hypocrisy of the US/UK/Europe. The bane of SL are her corrupt politicians who will even sell their children if they can make a buck. Co sponsoring resolution 30/1 is a case in point. No self respecting government would have done that except for our corrupt politicians.

Your politicians, state functionaries, industrialists, businessmen, academics, armed forces, policemen, and …………….saffron clad grant dukes are capable of everything except being fit for purpose.

I doubt Sri Lanka could ever exercise sovereignty.

Before you get to point your finger at US/UK/Europe do some critical self analysis. If you don’t treat your family well neighbours and strangers will grope your wife, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, aunts, nieces, mother, grandmother, ……………………………… Then don’t complain.

NV don’t waste your energy with Michael Roberts who is a charlatan delving into areas where he has no clue as well as due to his bigoted ideas gives cockeyed views.
As for lord Naseby, he is a senile imbecile who is not taken seriously by British government even his conservatives. He has to sing for his supper trying to protect Srilankan murderers for the perks he receives from Srilanka government.

Low caste are those Tamils who are not allowed into the inner sanctum of Hindu temples as their very presence pollutes the temple. The lowest of the low caste carries a name similar to Sakkili people who carry human excrement. Got it.
As for denigrating Michael Roberts, he is a scholar of international repute and his scholarly work is recognised the world over. He is a Rhodes Scholar and has. Ph D and entitled to call himself a doctor unlike Sankaralingam a bogus doctor.Problem with people like Sankaralingam Is that when a scholarly submission is made which refutes their communal views, they resort to vilifying the scholar instead of meeting the argument. A typical low caste response.

Percy the coward, give comments in your name if you are honest. My comments against Roberts and Naseby are spot on. Look at the way Roberts write, will that be acceptable to any intelligent person. You are a bigoted individual for whom this type of rubbish is gold. Naseby is a fool confirmed by the way he is behaving. In British society you cannot accept perks from anyone and any action by such individual to support his patrons is considered unethical. He has been exposed in UK as a person who is a darling of Srilanka government. Naturally it is nothing wrong in calling him an imbecile. As for Adele B, you cannot do any damn thing as supporting LTTE for its political goal is not an offence in a civilised country like UK. Fall at her feet and ask for pardon for your stupid comment. I am happy since the day I left Srilanka for good as I am able to at least sleep peacefully away from the murderous racists like you.

Was your examiner a fellow Sakkiliyas? Thank god if you are no longer in SL as vermin like you are not acceptable anywhere.Sri Lanka is sleeping well without Tamil terrorists killing, looting, and raping Sinhalese and Muslims. Michael Roberts is just another ill-informed, bigoted, profoundly ignorant half-baked/pseudo-scholar. The writer’s assertion quoting previous conflicts eg Gallipolli are not taking into account the secretive nature of the final months where no independent witnesses were allowed at the behest of the GoSL. It is as perplexing as to how the figure of 5-7,000 was plucked out by Lors Naseby and his cohorts. The US which had the necessary Satellite images, for reason best known to only itself has kept mum. For the West ,the figures are only useful only if it can score a poilitical point.

      Thiru,

Lord Naseby did not make up that number. He is quoting the number that the UN Country team came up with at the conclusion of the war.

Unfortunately, that report has been shelved because it doesn’t fit the narrative of the West and the Tamil Diaspora. To make matters worse, the SL Government has never ever requested/demanded that this report be released.

Also, now we are having a lot of Tamil people claiming torture/branding and rape than even during the height of the war. Why? Is it because this may be the best possible way to get asylum? Torture by proxy has now replaced “political persecution”.

Yasmin Sooka and all the paid mouthpieces are crying foul now but absolutely refuse to provide information of the people who were apparently “tortured and raped”. How can anyone conduct an investigation when they have no clue who the “victim” may be.

Assuming it is 7000 civilians which figure will be revised by (possibly paid) apologists for the Sinhala government very soon, does it still mean that the charge of war crimes and genocide does not hold? Why this great reluctance to have this matter reconciled by the courts? Why the need to hide behind the coat of an English”Lord”? We got rid of the bastards long time back. If 7000 Sri Lankan citizens had been killed, it is a matter for the Sri Lankan government to find out why and by whom this massive crime took place and the perpetrators of the crime are brought to justice. Why have long time apologists like Roberts try to sidetrack the crimes into other than what they are-war crimes and genocide. Let us have an impartial inquiry to determine the truth. Impartiality is not possible with the corrupt judiciary in Sri Lanka. It is necessary for foreign judges to deal with this.

Dare the US and EU to show Satellite imagery. Where can you hide 40,000 bodies?

Tiger Tamil liars in the west are the only ones who seek war again to fatten their LTTE coffers. Use Mossad tactics and put caps in their asses.

In Vietnam, the US killed thousands of Civilians and called them enemy combatants. No one was ever held accountable. War crimes were committed wholesale in Vietnam.

No one was ever brought to The Hague. Bombs killed tens of thousands of civilians. MyLai was only the tip of the iceberg of inhumane slaughter by USA. Bring it on.

Good point. Aren’t you going to fight for the Vietnamese? Please take the USA to ICC for all war crimes it had committed in the past 200 years, not to mention the land grab of the entire continent.

Since you are too busy with taking the USA to ICC, let the few do gooders in this island deal with our own war criminals, well its a long list, Sri Lankan security apparatus, home guards, armed thugs of various parties, LTTE and sundry Tamil armed groups, JVP, …………………………..

Will you be able to deal with Hindian war crimes committed in this island since 1980? We do not need to include Chola/Pandya invasion of this island as it is too long ago as the 700 thugs invading my ancestral land.

While we are on war crimes committed by foreign forces , let me ask you why didn’t the Sri Lankan armed forces (meant to protect the sovereignty of this island) fight the Hindian invading force? Were they hiding behind their women folks or VP’s fat bum? They usually/only come out from behind their women folks to kill and maim their own citizens, for example 1971, 1987-1990, 30 or so years, Welikade ….. ?

As a patriot you must do the right thing. Go fight the US imperialism wherever you find them. I assure you I will be right behind you.

In “Revelations In Britain: Lord Naseby Undermines The Received ‘Wisdom’” Michael Roberts reveals his intellectual shallowness and further exposes his questionable integrity.
Lord Naseby is about the only British MP swimming against the tide. Surely he could not and did not do anything when the then British PM David Cameron took
the then SL regime to the cleaners at the 2013CHOGM. Even today Lord Naseby is not taken seriously by his colleagues.
So Michael wants us to believe that the Lankan armed services never set out to kill civilians. There is evidence of a twelve year old captive in a bunker in May 2009, eating some tidbits given by a kind soldier. Few minutes later he was shot dead point blank. Lord Naseby may come up with some sloppy excuses which his colleagues will dismiss. But Michael will agree because he wants to.
The rest of the number-juggling is a version of “Nero fiddles while Rome burns”.
UNHRC is not doing enough over the genocide of Rohingyas. UN has not learned from SL. Lord Naseby (and Michael) may ask “Who or what is a Rohingya?”
Michael concludes with something to the effect “Lord Naseby will lead us towards the truth”.
    Truth my bloody foot.

Pillai yes your bloody foot is in your bloody mouth. You are suffering from foot in mouth disease.lord Naseby is one of the few
BRITISH MPs not bought over with LTTE drug money. We are talking here of SRI Lanka not a bunch of terrorists called Rohingyas who are getting what they deserve.

Get your facts straight. Naseby is a member of House of Lords and not an MP. yes he was not bought over by LTTE drug money, but bought over by Srilanka filthy lucre. You are a bigoted sycophant who is unable to face constructive criticism. In UK you cannot bribe MPS with money but with perks like fully paid holidays which people like Naseby have been enjoying which makes him a biased person. Remember what happened to Liam fox, when as minister he accepted perks from Srilanka government and did not disclose it. Do not compare UK with your standards.

According to high level sources Chineese government supposed to admitted to have given a chemical and that was used to literally vaporize 20,000 bodies put in containers

      Raja,

Why stop at 20,000? Why not quote the 150,000 that was floated by Rayappu Joseph? Even Tamilnet quoted figures of approximately 7,800 after the war. Look it up.

        Rajiv

According to you it was 7700 which changed to 7800 within matter of hours. Make up your mind.
How did Gota dispose the bodies?
Did his Commission agent brother buy him enough over priced drums of acid to drown the bodies?
        Did he use large incinerators?
Could you let the kith and kin of the victims have the details about 7700 or 7800 or more if you happen to change your mind.

This was a war behind closed doors. UN, HRW, ICRC and the International / local media were asked to leave before the commencement of the May 2009 war. Why? The intent and purpose was clear – genocide to kill and destroy the Tamils.

Counting the death and buried is the hidden graves and torturing in hidden camps are easy, but what about the arches that has been incinerated immediately after the war, is this what PM Ranil, saying, please accept those missing are death?

This is why the Tamils and the UN HRC, co-sponsored by 36 other governments are demanding an international independent investigation, with international judges, lawyers and prosecutors, to know exactly by whom, where, how and why thousands were killed. We will wait.

Why does the GoSL fearing to clear the mess they are in, and the Karma that is coming along, before they are ostracised further as a failed and a rogue state?

Truth, Justice and accountability before settlement of accounts, for peace on mind and closure for the victims, please.

Bugger could not make it to a professorship. He was associate professor. No need to dignify him as professor. One of the many academic pretenders like GL Pieris, the plagiariest.

Not as much as the LTTE rump is paying for SCUM such as Yasmin Sooka and the MOB.
No where in the world the TERRORISTs were crushed in recent history like Sri Lanka did, which World is taking stock.

    Kumar Dassenaieke

Do you know exactly how much has the LTTE rump paid Yasmin Sooka and the MOB in total and their monthly obligation? In return what does Sooka and the MOB oblige to do?

There have been several examples of TERRORISTS being crushed, for example Hindians allowed all those Khalistanies inside the Golden Temple and did a massacre of the entire circle of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s friends.

Let see if the 30 odd countries didn’t help especially the Hindians the war would be still fought and by now clan would have bought half the Manhattan.

Bye the way, the valiant armed forces needed VP’s baby brigade to fight the Hindian IPKF while the armed forces were hiding behind his bum.

What is all the excitement about?
If the number of war victims is as modest as 7000 or so and a good part of it comprises victims of LTTE attacks, the government can boldly agree to an impartial inquiry.
