Rs 3 Million Compensation For 30 Meethotamulla Victims; Rs 600 Million For Environmental Minister’s Luxury Benz Cars

While the official website of the Ministry of Disaster Management has no information whatsoever regarding the recent tragedy at Meethotamulla where slippage of a massive garbage dump wreaked havoc on residents of the area, the Government has offered compensation of 100,000 rupees to the families of the victims.

As of today 30 bodies have been recovered and an equal number feared dead.

Meanwhile President Maithripala Sirisena who is also the Environmental Minister has imported two luxury Benz cars. The value of these vehicles are over  574 million rupees.

After a public outcry over the senseless spending on vehicles imported by MPs, Ministers and the President, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake declared that the TOTAL VALUE of the two vehicles imported for the President is 148 million rupees.

With irrefutable evidence made available to the Colombo Telegraph by our Customs sources, now we can declare that the tax exempted on these vehicle along is over 426 million rupees (cage 51 of the Customs Bill of Entry), which would have been charged if not for the tax waiver granted under the Customs Ordinance (under Section 19A of the Customs Ordinance).

Therefore, the actual market value of these vehicles is well over 574 million rupees and not 148 million rupees as suggested by Finance Minister.

      Why CT spreads lies ?

President and PM have made it clear the news spread on the sums being offered to the victims.

If the state confirms the truths, why the media men continue their mud slinging further ..

Was Sira was told his car was 148 million and another far more expensive one imported in his name, by Ravi K and UNP crooks to be later sold in the open market?

Is it Sira or Ravi. K. or whoever orders cars for the corrupt politicians in miracle of Modayas who is responsible for the difference in prices given and the lies that stink of corruption?

Why does not the JVP and Students of Universities protest against the hideous corruption and seek a ban on duty free cars for corrupt politicians instead of SAITM? This corruption of politicians is the bigger rot than SITEM

Why can’t Mahinda Rajapaksa and cronies “donate” from the billions they stole from the people?

Get Rs. 1 million from each MP who got a car permit.

What a mandate this government got on the 8th of Jan 2015?
What a Herculean task by the people to depose of a dictatorial . fearful and corrupt regime of the Rajapakse’s?
Is this the reward the people get in return. The collapse of good governance in less than 36 months since taking office ?

What a shame Sri Lanka!!!There is soon going to be revolution where people will take to the streets and politicians irrespective of the parties they represent will have to hide

Yeah, Maithrie nor Ranil has the control to stamp out corruption in their government. MR and his acolytes are still in charge and manipulating, through those jumping frogs that came over to the government side, and displaced the yahapalanaya crowd. Who in original YP now exists in the government? MS has been isolated, President by name only. RW as we know always protected MR and his practises, in fact adopted his corrupt methods, e.g Mahendran CB scam; he utters fake slogans to mislead the public and wears face masks in public as if he has landed from Mars.

One dead person in Meethotamulla equals 100,000 worthless Ruppees, whereas one wheel of MS and RW’s latest limousines are worth probably 25 millions each. This is one opportunity for MS and RW to show that they cared for the oppressed people; No! instead they prefer to squander, to grab the luxury that they could do without at this time of a catastrophe, realizing that they might not survive the next major election.

Whilst i can see the argument. I can also see the double sidedness of this in each and everyone of us who are good atbpoimtumg fi gers but not si good at looking internally. Here are some comparisons – we pay our housemaids and drivers a miniscule amount but spend much more than that on acohok to entertain our rich friends so we can impress them and expect favours. We rake papers and pens from.office for home use, we use offfice fone and office time to build our houses, during previous regime they spent millions on night races whilst disabled soldiers were paid meagre pensions. So where does the finger pointing end and relative comparison and self criticism begin.Sri Lankans are very good at giving opinions to others and how others shoyld behave whilst they have bigger shits themselves to sort out.

      Mr Kodituwakku,

SL politicians have thick hides & no shame. Govt. Officials & the judiciary have been bribed with duty concessionary/ duty free permits, so your campaign against duty free permits is not going anywhere, but that does not mean the fight should be abandoned.

In the early 70s, Ralph Nader, a professional lobbyist in the US, campaigned to make GM, the largest car company in the world at that time, to be accountable for certain design faults which made the Chevrolet Covair ‘unsafe’. His persistence irritated GM so much that it is rumored the GM management even considered hiring hitmen to bump him off but his tireless campaign paved the way for litigation against car manufacturers for unsafe vehicles. Since then, many car manufacturers have settled law suits out of court & in the recent past, Toyota paid out Billions in fines & compensation for a problem that caused the throttle to stick & now VW is also expected to pay Billions in fines, as well as, compensation, for misleading exhaust gas emissions in their diesel models.

Therefore, the more the public is aware of this injustice, the more pressure, at least on the President & PM, to lead the way by example in giving up this perk voluntarily, as there is no way it can be taken away officially, now that it is embedded in our culture. Unfortunately, the President’s extravagant purchase of 2 luxury Mercs at a cost very few of us earn in our life time, while the country is gripped with so many pressing problems due to lack of finances, such as, environmental & health issues caused by rubbish dumping, shows his callous disregard to the suffering of the masses.

We need a fair duty system that serves everybody, not only a privileged few, which is the first step to a fairer society.

Mr Kodithuwakku, how had this been after the riots in Aluthgama or the like man made disasters in the previous regime ?

I am not a fan of any of the govt, but why only to point fingers at the current men ?
I think from what we get to know now, even among the dead in Meethotamulla, some them had been part of the garbage business. Nobody is believed to be clean here. Those people that never heard the command of the authorities, are reported to have just ignored what authorities have asked them to do. Even last month, there had been efforts made on the issue, but none of them have heard but dwelled inthe same rotten holes where they have been.

This is common to other folks that live either sides of the kelaniy river banks- these men would never listen to rulers command.

Lanka is a country where people as born culprits would not allow responsible authorities to do the job even if the efforts are to uplift their lives.
The kind of changes being made to the livelyhood of people have been reported in many countries – with those countries introducing development projects.
We the lankens are not the only folks face the kind of problems.

      3 millions – 3 000 000 rupees.
Each get 1 lack of rupees.

200 fold more is invested to the vehicles of the minister of environment –

THIS WE SHOULD DISCUSS LOUDLY AS WE CAN:: NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT:

Can you Remember / check How much money Regee Ranthunga got , when he was the minister of rehabilitation under the Satellite’s administration
as compensation for his lost property about 2000000 Rs and Minuwangoda Co op materials stolen and stocked in his house and garage in 1978 election time.
      I think it is about 250 00 000 [ 250 millions of public money.]
and we withness the looting by UNPers at udugampola..
when Fousy was minister, he granted more money to His friends and relatives who lost nothing in the war in east.
But we lost OUR house and property in trincomalee worth about 1700000, but got nothing, only 0000000000.
no hate feelings, as we are not indebted to any body, but state is indebted to us.

SriLankan politicians always suck blood out of public..we have a failed judiciary…classic example is mohan pieris telling MY3 that he will deliver the judgments according to MY3 wishes if he is allowed to continue.
Our public service stinks…not one permanent Secretary of a ministry in charge of disaster management/public administration/provincial administration appeared to explain where things went wrong with this disaster. Instead I saw jokers like Fawzie visiting the place and hooted away by the public.

I would say not only blood, even dead body parts. Some have become like bonelicking wolves. That has deteriorated to the levels by today. Some do things wearing pirith nula anywhere they want to… calling themselves as real buddhists.
Remember the body parts of the murdered rugby player – an another young son of a mother with a high spirit- Thadjudeen. The boy is allegedly to have been murdered by the direct mediation of Rajapakshe offsprings for a love affair issue. Fromer Deputy polic high man – has been in remand for the last 10 months, he is tied his hands. so he cant say anything, but his silence will have to be broken in the days to come – then the Raja will have to face it. Anyways, by today, the records of vehicles in former prez secretariat have gone missing. Whatever was touched to collect the docs, had gone missing. How come, former so called wonderful leader s office to have lost their records even if his cesspit prevaricate any questions being posed on any of the allegations today.

There were so many cars without documentation during Premedasa’s time given to all and sundry. Not a single registration document could be found. What was the difference? No Colombo Telegraph to shout. Of course if anyone shouted they were murdered. Remember the journalist who shot a photo of Hema in skirt playing tennis? and what happened to Richard DeZoysa? At least the leader of the police unit who abducted him and was identified was blown up when Premedasa was blown up. Karma is a bitch.

          what matters are the numbers.

Those who got dissapeared, murdered and harm by all means are more in Rajapakshe days than any times in lanken history.

Else everyone s terms we can found all kind of failures.

But we perfectly know how Raja brothers performed. Just becasue his terms put the end to the relay race of the war – we must not let him rape us right ?

Even today, the guy prevaricate as no others, while his supporters protect him.

All shallow thinking peoples kindly note the price we have to pay Rs140 million is to protect the only leader we can have as president is worth at the moment. Many enemies are waiting to take him down. I am no MS fan, but we don’t have much option. Govt regulation applies to Govt servants and the leaders as per the constitution has rights for item such as this for the security of the nation. So Market value is null and void in this case for the Pres and PM and it should be. The Vehicle has Military grade Armour protection thru out.
So if you don’t like it contest the next election or just shutttttt upppppp.
    Thank you.

The president has been there for 2 years;a matter for permanent mission of PSD.

Setting up of presidential security is not a job for coming and going presidents. The game of allowing MPs and ministers to have duty free vehicle started only few months ago as matter for keeping Unitory Yahapalanaya together.

Is this the first one with those features for the president?

Why the customs is leaving 250% duty on a presidential security vehicles? Aren’t they the property of the government?

Maithri may have disappointed us somewhat but look below at what KussiAmma has said.

KussiAmma seems to imagine that she can mock Maithri for being a simple man. He is essentially a decent guy. As for this KussiAmma, cant we send her to Saudi Arabia to be raped by the oil sheikhs.

KussiAmma doesn’t seem to realise that it is HER lack of breeding that she exposes.

Now the debate is centered on the “price tag” of the two vehicles. The Minister of Finance “defending” and sort of “challenging” the “Price” publicized and the real cost. When it will dawn on the PEOPLE and the USER, in this case the President, the NEED to evaluate the “Necessity” of those two types of vehicles already imported to the country? As far as things stand today, both the PEOPLE and the EXECUTIVE are just not “BOTHERED” about the situation of the country; instead, both the sections are mainly concerned of and striving to “GET WHAT YOU CAN” while the sun shines. After two and a half years, this Government headed by the PM and the President has FAILED and the “RECOVERY” is far beyond even imagination. Both the PM and the President are LOST in the WOODS and they are WANDERERS and DRIFTERS. But in the meantime, making capital out of that situation, the rest of the “TEAM” (Ministers, MPs & Administrative members, goons, cohorts,Advisors etc) are busy at work to RECOUP whatever possible before it is too late. Many more DISASTERS are in the offing and when that situation arrives, the very Disaster Management Ministry will collapse along with its Minister, the President.

After 19th Amendment of Republic Constitution ,President/MS became second in command, The Primer -Minister is overall in-charge day to day management and administration the that Ruling Party of Sri lanka by under the UNP leadership.

In the reality President has no power to rule the our nation at all. The Primer is key Executive Power ongoing Republic Constitution ——Sri Lanka.

The key man is responsibility for Metotamullathat Man-Made disasters an accountability by Ranil Wick of UNP leader.
The Metotamulla is this type catapostorp ,the first kind of Garbage Tragedy of after an Independent Ceylon 1948.

The Maybach S600 is no ordinary car. It is not available in common Mercedes Dealerships. Cost of a standard(if we ignore bullet proofing, bomb proofing and other enhancements needed for Gamarala Nhot Phot and his son etc) is around From $191,300 to $200,000 in the US market BEFORE Tag, Tax and Title. So you can easily say even a base model will come to around $220,0000. This is where we should go Budu Ammo!!! That without Customs duty with LKR at 152 per USD comes to LKR 33,440,000(isn’t that 33 million LKR each). Add taxes say mildly at 50% that is an incredible amount of money and well worthy of the First Person of the nation. He came from humble beginnins with a bicycle as a Gramasevaka. He has sacrificed enormously to restore freedom and democracy. It is not a steep price for Nhot Phot and his son and daughter as well. I would estimate a upgraded car will cost at least $300,000 if you consider the enhancements.

Nosey Parker: Have you heard of the story of the two parrots brought up in two homes; one in a house of a criminal and the other in a house of a spiritual man. The one in the house of the criminal got accustomed to speak foul language, all the time following the master criminal. The other living in the spiritual man learned to speak in soothing words giving solace to the listener. That is what happened to those young UNPers you mentioned in your comment. They became a heard of cattle following the Master. What else to do and expect?

I repeatedly say that people (voters) too have to take the responsibility for the current mess we are in. We vote this bandits into power and make it possible for them to screw us. The voting is done on party or other political allegiances, cast or clan, religion or community, class or affinity but not on suitability. Not on suitability to hold positions an serve the country and the people.Once they are elected they select the known such as relations, friends, schoolmates and past associates on other intimacies etc;Ability or the love for the country are not criteria of selection. They import young and old who have robed the country or capable of robbing the county like the current PM continue to do. An archaic man who is in his 80s who robbed the country enough to acquire luxury properties in a fashionable part of London and continue to live there and another who robbed the country for billions of rupees from Singapore have appeared this time as on the past occasions. Religiously they appear when RW is in power and disappear when he is out of power. They are the members of the TOP Committee deciding on all economic and other important policy matters affecting all policies and programmes of the country. They are only robber barons not lovers of the country. There are enough capable, talented, experienced, committed people who are un-curruptable and who love this country to man this positions. Voters must seriously consider these and not repeat the same mistakes at another election.

Why did SAITM get more coverage compared to the Meethotamulla disaster? Hint: One is privileged class. Which one?

We are being prepared to accept a SAITM solution in which SAITM will be “nationalized” with billions paid to the owners.

Meeotamulla victims will be paid a few thousand. The victims will pull themselves up – most likely off the remittances of those slaving in the Mid-East.

Cars and compensation decreed by anyone will not take the pain of a man made disaster and the abuse of the rights of the people living near an area chosen for a dump.It is a right of a person to live with clean air and not have to wear a mask all the time , it is the right of the people to live with non toxic water that creep into their wells or water ways that they use for daily needs .It is the right of the people to be consulted before a land is used for a Dump by any authority private or public .The planners . those who passed the laws and the experts who gave the big tick should be brought to trial before allocating compensation .till then the state must provide alternatives for daily living ..Read that the PM has a policy on that and it need to be implemented ASAP ..issues of cars and comparison thereof is just sidetracking the big issue of grave injustice .
