Secret Behind The Rajapaksa Myth; Is It Still Continuing?

By Vishwamithra1984

“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.” ~John F. Kennedy

The fabric of each civilized society is being woven with one common thread. That common thread is the rule of law. Any society that does not adhere to the fundamental principles of rule of law begins its decay from the first day of that departure from this noble human creation that has bound various human families together as nations, communities or tribes. In advanced human societies, as they exist today, the rule of law is not worshipped like thousands of deities, statues of religious leaders or any ancient artifacts and relics discovered thanks to archeological explorations. But the rule of law continues to safeguard the common man, woman and child against any invasive action by transgressors of the law; it also acts with ruthless efficiency and merciless prowess. Blinded by a mask that covers her eyes, the Lady of Justice looks over her children without emotion but with utter equanimity.

However, if the very mechanism which holds that law and its enforcers together is interfered with, if the cogs and wheels that make the whole machine possible are messed with, the entire process would, at the beginning come to a standstill. Then the decaying process starts with no noticeable symptoms; the stench of outside influence is not strong enough for any insider to smell and the cracks are too miniscule for any outsider to notice. Yet a discriminating traveller would undoubtedly decipher these microscopic cracks and faint smells and reach the inevitable conclusion that the country’s judiciary is at stake; its independent stature is being challenged; its operators, judges, attorneys and officials in the Ministry of Justice are being unfavorably advantaged as in the case of Rajapaksa cohorts and disadvantaged if they are anti-Rajapaksa. Whichever way it is spinning, what are really spinning are our justice system and the sacred notion of rule of law, and they are spinning the wrong way.

That was the secret of the Rajapaksa-myth. A myth that was interlaced over ten years from the Helping Hambantota days to the award of Colombo Port City to the Chinese contractors. When they had control over the judiciary system, they literally controlled the ultimate outcome of any legal, parliamentary or bureaucratic probe. The sudden disappearance from the country of Frederica Janz, former editor of Sunday Leader, after a stormy telephone conversation with a sibling who held a super high post under Mahinda Rajapaksa when an ostensibly independent judiciary is live and functional is evidence of that so-called ‘live, functional and independent’ judiciary. It was also among the whispering shadows that Frederica was absconding in a close-by Asian country on the  of the verdict deliverance of the infamous White Flag case in which General Sarath Fonseka was found guilty of. The Sunday Leader was the leading critic of the Rajapaksa clan’s conduct of public affairs. Then editor of the Sunday Leader simply did not trust the judiciary under the Rajapaksas. That indeed was a great tragedy.

The two most prominent abuses of power under the Rajapaksas were aimed at the two of the leading figures of the official machinery at the time. General Sarath Fonseka was taken into custody in the most gruesome manner, soon after the Presidential Elections in 2010 and. thereafter the alleged one-sided trial and incarceration in a most cold-blooded fashion, he being exposed to the public in his prison jumpsuit, are etched in the memories of patriotic Sri Lankans and the circus of abuse of the judiciary and the deafening silence of the part of some who occupied the benches of the highest courts were all part of this spectacle played out in the open.

Then came the most shamefully conduced impeachment process against the then Chief Justice, Shirani Bandaranayke. Within a matter of days she was accused, trialed and found guilty and impeached by a parliamentary select committee. Shaming of General Fonseka and Shirani Bandaranayake was two of the blackest deeds carried out by any government in Sri Lanka’s storied history, beginning from the Devanampiyatissa days to the present. The Rajapaksas understood the fine art of manipulating the machinery of political power within the constitutional framework. Appointing a now-defamed Attorney General and then promoting him to be the Chief Justice of the country sealed the deal, both for Sarath Fonseka and Shirani Bandaranayke.

This cruel manipulation of the system by the Rajapaksas paved the way for them to create an illusion of ‘permanent residency’ in the benches of power. What gave them this unkind license to think that theirs was power forever? What deluded them to be so complacent and contented? What drove them to this abyss that they created not only for themselves, but in the process the country too? They did not create this illusion in a vacuum. They did not depend solely on the judiciary manipulation. They possessed some unmatched talents that the present set of government-leaders do not enjoy at all. The Rajapaksas had a well-oiled propaganda machine that worked overtime. They either crated their own ear-catching slogans or their advertising experts created for them. Terms like ‘Uthuru Wasanthaya’ (Spring in the North), ‘Negenahira Navodaya’ (Rejuvenation of the East), ‘Maanushika Meheyuma’ (Human Operation), Mahinda’s recurrent reference to the notion that he was ready to go to the ‘electric chair’ on behalf of the patriotic sons and daughters of the country were all creations of this talented propaganda Goebelleses. They not only managed to create an illusory set of goals and purposes, they gave it a local, vernacular tinge.  In addition, they portrayed themselves as ‘strong’ men. Strength is a great characteristic in a leader. Ordinary people get easily attracted to raw power. In political propaganda, what matters is not the truth. Our American ‘hero’ Donald Trump is proving it time and time again. If a lie is repeated often enough, following the dark theory of Josef Goebbels, Hitler’s Propaganda Chief, the lie becomes the truth. That is precisely what the Rajapaksas shamelessly indulged in.

The war-victory gave them a badge of patriotism; they wore that badge while engaging in some of the most unpatriotic deeds; ransacking the country’s coffers, allowing some third-rate hooligans to control power at Pradesheeya Sabha level and looking the other way when these political ruffians openly challenged the rule of law were within the wherewithal of the Rajapaksa cabal. That brute strength which was ascribed to the Rajapaksa clan outlived the regime’s tenure. Today it’s continuing in the opposition as Joint Opposition. Both President and Prime Minister seem not to care but if they do so they would be doing that at their own peril. The Rajapaksas did not possess any strength outside their power cocoon. Their political infertility and avaricious character are being displayed in the open today. Yet the people seem to rally around them.

The United National Party and the Maithripala faction of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party must realize one cardinal truth. That is Maithripala Sirisena did not obtain a majority of the Sinhalese Buddhist votes. In a close analysis, this writer forecasted well before the Presidential Elections of 2015 that Sirisena would win but by a whisker. I also predicted that he would not get more than 51% of the total vote. He got 51.28%. Had Mahinda Rajapaksa managed to obtain more than 63% of the Singhalese Buddhist vote, Mahinda Would have won a third term. I have repeatedly stated that Sirisena owes his victory to the Tamils, Muslims and the UNPers. When an overwhelming majority of the minorities- in this case close to 80% of the voting Tamils and Muslims vote for one candidate- one needs only 37% of the Sinhalese Buddhist vote to win. Maithripala Sirisena managed to get that. Whether it could be repeated is entirely in the hands of the current coalition partners.

War drums have fallen silent; electric chairs and rejuvenation of a region have evaporated into dusty, smoggy air; slogans have lost their electricity; heroes have fallen from their horses and the caravan still seems to continue in a dumb and unpatriotic way. The onlookers have turned the other way for their daily chores are more important than the caravan; henchmen and cohorts are behind bars and some are shuttling between home and courts of law. The wheel of law is turning but excruciatingly slow and sometimes seem unwilling. Apathy, the omnipresent danger, is slowly setting in. Ordinary men, women and children get busy with earning their pay; an ominous air of gloom and despair are gradually replacing hope and enthusiasm. This is the ever-present danger to the very survival of democracy, a system of government, however much inadequate it may look, it’s the best among bad choices humankind faces today. Sri Lanka is no exception.

Rajapaksa’s strong point must be blunted; political carnivores should not be allowed to raise their greedy heads again; apathy on the part of political leaders and ordinary men and women cannot be forgiven under any circumstances.

Gotabaya Rajapakshe is a Sinhala-Buddhist Ultra-Nationalist Racist and a Pseudo-Patriot, if he becomes the next president, the Minorities will be kaput, he will be the hero of the Majority Sinhala-Buddhists. Not only the minorities, anybody who talks against his government will get a free white van ride and will vanish from earth. It will be like a military rule and BBS will be his personal advisers. Another Pol Pot in the making.

This is the right time for the present UNP government to get rid of the executive presidency which is a disaster for the country.

The reality behind the Rajapakshe myth came into being through biased local media. Derana and are believed to be private TV senders that were introduced by Rajapakshe men investing all the black money the state earned.
Auditor general can easily find the bit if he and his team would please closely study how the pvt senders made that much of money.
Drug and Mafia are behind this. That is the reason why former president visited while police ambush was made to the house of one of the Negombo DRUG kin pin -current deputy Minister Lanza. Here president did not even wait hours, but abused state helicopter to travel to the place. There are videos the manner former president betrayed entire nation on that day.
He talks about Drug problem, but never ever took any bold action to control drug import or the like business into the country. Asked why he did so, former president said, ” no matter those business men imported nacotics so long they are not selling within th ecountry”.

And the above media units together with state TV channels from dawn to dusk louded all high values of Rajakashes, these were politcally motivated since the very same nation was then made to believe what they heard as the facts. But journalists like Lasantha W who was alleged to have murdered by Rajakashes for reveal of high ´profile crime by them … through srilanekn sunday leader paper.. would have revealed them further, if the kind of journalists were there. WIth his murder dozens of journos left including his successor Ms Janz who then had a phone threat on her… directly by former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapakshe.
Rajapakshes behaved to the very same manner Zimbabwian dictator Mugabe does. Where ever they were about to visit, people were made ready for their welcome. Media units painted the picture then in favour of brutal men…. it was like the people of north korea were made ready to cry day long at the time their leader died few years ago.
This then was passed to next generation and it came into be the real stories to them.

There were no secrets but very same people were made fools by state and pvt media units.

Gobbels theory was applied to paint their magical powers. By today, it is becoming even more clear – those who were not allowed to become law makers were also made able to become law makers in this country, since Rajaakshes were beyond the prevailing law and order.

Media were sometimes useful in doing the wrong thing for the right purpose. Take CNN for example

      3

Not just the kind of posters only, but even people were made and abused to lick the posters on the streets to show the affinity of them to Rajapakshes. THese were almost like the propaganda of North korean leaders.

They the koreans hate the man , but if the culprits made everything to abuse people for moeny to do the job for their publicity, they would do it. That is the theory Rajaakshe applied.

And his cousin is still in lanken prison. They stay years in remand though the man was former so called ambassador to the US. IN THE high days of Rajaakshe.

Rajapakshe tactics proved the world, we the asians too can become Zimbabwian style Mugabes easily, MEDIA men would have worked like Prostitutes. Derana and Hiru are the number one media prostitutes in this country.

They always chose the most abusive tactics to fool the nation

      1) Astrology and Sorcery tricks were hyped up in the society, since Rajapakshe was reported to wear 40 or more talishments on his visible and invisible body parts before leaving home. Lately revealed that the man who made him even more stupid and supertitous was former Roya Astrologer who is proved to be an uneducated rural man from down south but he was coming from a sorcery background. His tricks came into live, that the person himself had recited predictions about Rajapakshe, but pretended that other gurus did them. All these came to surface lately.

The poverty dominated rural masses thought, if Rajapakshe s can go after ASTRO and SORCERY why not us. In that way they were made utter fools by today. THERE ARE ALMOST 60% of LOCAL FOLKS ARE after the tricks players.

Some believe, if swimming pools are filled with sand instead of Water, the man would become even more rich… ASP LIYANAGE- a confidiante of Rajaakshe and he even today does this… who is behind all these if not Rajakashe black money promoters. Even that palace bought by ASP liyanage is believed to be an asset of Rajapakshe but pretending furhte rit was of ASP liyanage

      2) Rajaakshes that joined to local politics are 6 or 7 …. so the people thought, that is a greater link.. that can keep everything intact but the other way around was the reality. No law and order was respected, thuggery was promoted. hundreds of videos are there as evidence material

      3) Hypocritical religious belief- that was painted by local media men – were abused to show that BUDDHIST clergy was on the side of Raja… but the reality, they the gentle buddhists were passive and lived their life as it is. But press men painted it in favours of Raja. The reality as it is, Rajaakshe rascal sons abused even Tooth relics premises of Kandy for their night car races, irrespective of the request made by Mahanayaka theros, who have beenhigly respected by BUddhists from that day on

4)Highly abusive buddhist movements such as BBS was made instrumental to paint the picture in favours of them…. minority muslims were attacked by abusing them and sent the picture across, that nothing can get passed in the country, so long extremists groups would stand against them.
That was the culture that Rajaakshe promoted. Like in islamic nations, also in SL, there are buddhist folks that can become even more abusive and violent if anyone would go against their religion:
That is what was instrumental by Rajaakshe to paint the picture to outside world, that nothing like achieving power devoluton woudl be possible inthis country, so long extremist fractions are in power.
Actually, he enriched the hands of extremism instead doing the other way around:

If auditor general is believed to be bringing good hints to allow proper investigations,
why cant he do the same to show all what Rajapakshes made was not from their pockets but abusing people s funds.

Sky high Rajaakshe potraits were filled every other meter in Colombo vicinity by end of 2014- it was horrible.

As if people were made to believe, that Rajapakshe is the only man to save the nation.

Besides, the govt collectively stood against terror, but it was not his magical powers eliminated the terror but the brave tasks of the Forces. But that alone was abused to mislead folks.

Like a cricket match winning by the minister of Sports – there had been no place given to army commander who led it to all victories.
They were talend at hoodwinking poor masses.

Mahinda Jarapassa family was rotten and we know it, but Ranil’s double dealing and protection of MR and the current culture of corruption and impunity and lack of accountability is more insidious and corrosive of democratic culture and institutions than MR’s blatant abuse of power – this is something that the Colombo liberals don’t seem to get!

Million dollar question is why is Bond Scam Ranil who has stacked the Judiciary and Commissions with his stooges PROTECTING Mahinda Jarapassa family?

Because they are all in the same dirty game of money politics.

I enjoyed reading the statistics of the last Presidential elections. Thank you for making the effort to make sense in the deafening din of confused voices. Sri Lanka is once again at the cusp of great things. Whether her people are prepared to take her there, is the Billion Yuan question!

In this day and age of instant communications and information flow, people can still be bought for a buth packet and bottle. Sad, but true.

Do vishvamithra say that Ranil wickramsinghe is different from the Mahinda Rajapakse govt ?

They are exactly the same ?. Only problem was Mahinda Rajapakse was obscessed with the wat machinary to be used LTTE and he used it in the civilian management.

You just bash Mahinda Rajapakse. Yet, Ranil is doing the same thing. Ranil has controlled even the media except boot lickers like you.

Vishwamithra’s mortal fear of a Rajapakse return is in full display……..(the parroting of “rule of law”, “democracy” are all BS to cover his naked hatred)

The solution is simple. Split the country as the minorities demand………they will vote not 80% but 100% to MS-RW-CBK junta again.

    Vishwamithra can sleep happily thereafter.

The myth came alive in those heady days after 19 May 2009. Driving south caressed by the warm breezes of euphoria, past huge outsize larger than life cut-outs, with grateful common people prostrating themselves and hailing their ‘King’, Well, it can go to a man’s head.

The downfall of the Great Liberator began when his attendant spittoon-carriers convinced him that he could walk on water. As he did, they squeezed the country dry with their evil deeds.

Even the minorities were seduced, their hearts beat faster, when he declared ‘there are no minorities now’ we are all Sri Lankan. In the end the minorities found out, sadly, that what he really meant was that all Sri Lankans are equal, but some Sri Lankans are more equal than others.

As you say, the end came when enough decent Buddhists decided that, Great Liberator he may be, but he was no role model protector of the Noble Message.

So, to the question: The Rajapaksa Myth; Is It Still Continuing?
Look at this way, the next election is for the Yahapalanaya government to lose, and standing in the wings is Renaiisance Man Gota, the man who put the colour back into Colombo. He has kept his nose clean, and not put a foot wrong. Myth or Miracle?

Mahinda Rajapakse is the strongest leader Sri Lanka had since independence. He promised to the nation that he will eradicate Tamil terrorism and he fulfilled his promise. Imagine the economic and social impact if Mahinda Rajapakse did not put a full stop to terrorism. He ruled the country on his own style. He did not promise a ‘Yahapalanaya’. The weakest leader Sri Lanka had was J.R. Jayawardena. It is because of his weakness Sri Lanka got in to the mess with Provincial Councils which in my view is the biggest ‘White Elephant’. ‘Para Suddas’ exerted immense pressure on Mahinda Rajapakse to stop the war against LTTE but he did not yield to that pressure whereas JRJ bowed down to pressure from Hindians. In the same way Mahinda Rajapakse told ‘Para Suddas’ to get lost, if JRJ had the guts to tell Rajiv to get lost and went ahead with the military offensive, probably LTTE terrorism would have come to an end long time ago.

Unfortunately, now Sri Lanka has two more weak leaders. MY3 talks but very little action. In case of Ranil, even his party members did not have faith on him as a person who can give leadership. He at least had this ‘Mr. Clean’ title to his credit but it is no more there. Although they came to power highlighting Mahinda Rajapakse’s corrupt regime and using the slogan ‘Eradicate Corruption’ according to what I gather from various sources corruption is going on in a big way. With respect to policies, Ranil is dancing according to the tune of ‘Suddas’ and MY3 is dancing according to the tune of Ranil and Chandrika because he has to pay his debts. The way things are going on reminds me a song of Nanda Malini:

“Bera ganna puluwannam Raja Daruwan hata otunna
Sudanam mahathuni un parei ekka nidiwadinna”

What a shame that the Great Liberator thought that by freeing us from ‘terrorism’ the reward was carte blanche permission for him and his hangers on to screw the country and act like some latter day god who could never do wrong. Remember the reprobates he gathered round the throne? Shitty Sajin Vass Gunawardena who with the New York slapping of Dr Nonis made Sri Lanka the laughing stock of diplomatic circles; and more. Who can forget the white vans, the murders (poor Thajudeen, Shaikh), the rapes, the list goes on and on. The embarrassment when a minister of MR’s government offered to marry a high UN dignitary. All that happened in the time of what you call a ‘strong leader’. Think again!

DS was probably our greatest leaders. Those who came after him just turned out to be devious, divisive self-servers always looking for the easy chance. A great leader could come but only after we have clear the shit and dross that now make up the majority of our political milieu.

So, was the Great Liberator myth? No. Legend? No. Maybe more like Leg End.

We are sick and tired of hearing about all the crimes committed by Rajapaksa clan. It is time for the M.S+R.W. Government to do the right things now–
1]Find the evidence for ‘stealing from the Government coffers
2]Find out who gave the instructions to murder the innocents–MPs,Journalists, Rugby player etc etc and punish them.[NOT the military that carried out the orders]
How did Mr Raviraj’s murderers got released –something wrong with the Judiciary?
3] Are crimes of similar nature being still perpetrated by the current government?
4] Getting two years of extension from the UNHCR is not going to help the affected Tamils unless the Security forces in North and East are greatly reduced and they prevented from running business
