Colombo Telegraph – Several Tamil families living at a village in Elpitiya, Galle have been assaulted and their houses robbed and set on fire following a dispute involving an Army soldier, Srilanka Mirror reports. According to ‘Ada Derana’ Tamil website, the soldier in question had become angry after a youth of the Dilithura village had refused to address him as ‘sir.’
The soldier, while on vacation, had gone to the village around 10.00 am on April 14 and assaulted the youth at his home and another Tamil youth who had tried to mediate.
Later, around 30 youths had gathered at the location, beaten up the two Tamil youths and set fire to seven houses, push cycles, motorcycles and three wheelers.
They had also got away with money and jewellery. The villagers, who suffered estimated damages of Rs. nine million, have complained to Embilipitiya police. A police team arrived at the scene and arrested two Tamil youths and are searching for several other suspects.
Dilithura is a village with a population of around 3,4000 belonging to 520 Tamil families.

But the problem is when the police arrived at the village and arrested the two Tamil youths, and failed to take any actions on those criminals who burnt the village and robbed the Tamils. There is something confusing here. The story begins with a village in Elpitiya in Galle District and ends up at Embiapitiya Police. Someone has mixed up.The name in the Elpitiya area is Divithura and not Dilithra.The population statics given of the village also seems to be exaggerated.
It is a plantatation area located about 3-4 miles away in the interior from my village. The Divithura jungles were leased to Mudaliyar Dias Abeysinghe by the Dutch for cultivating spices. he brought people as settlers. Later the British statrted big plantations there. Since then the conflict with villagers exist.The introduction of Immigrant labour added to unemployment among the local people.
Divithura Estate area saw some violence in 1983 July riots. I visited the IDP camp at St MAry’s School at Elpitiya at that time. Divithura is surrounded by a few villages which are generally known for violent disposition of people and was a recruiting ground for JVPin their two insurrections.
One can understand why the soldier asked a Tamil boy to address him as “Sir”.I can explain the reason but canot express it here for good reasons.

We should be careful that we do not stereotype. True, there are extremists in this country such as the perpetrators of this crime. Captain Azavedoo destroyed the temple and Constantine De Saa removed the material to build the Fort. Captain Pereira killed the last of the Ganninnanses and a Yakdessa (Kattandiya) who performed rituals there.No mention of any Brahamins or Hindu priests. So why question the appearance of a Buddhist symbol in this former Buddhist sacred spot?
