Sirisena Appoints Pujith Jayasundara As New IGP

Despite protests, President Maithripala Sirisena today appointed Pujith Jayasundara as the country’s 34th Inspector General of Police (IGP).

DIG Pujith Jayasundara

Jayasundara received his letter of appointment from Sirisena at the Presidential Secretariat.

The appointment comes amidst protests by certain groups, who pointed out that the Constitutional Council should not have allowed one of it’s members, Minister Champika Ranawaka to sit at the meeting to decide on the IGP, due to a conflict of interest as Ranawaka is currently under investigation for a hit and run accident.

Ranawaka was Sirisena’s nominee to the Council.
