The OHCHR report on Sri Lanka released mid-last week had dropped all names of alleged persons, due to President Maithripala Sirisena’s name being one of the 20 odd names that were held to be responsible for alleged war crimes.
The Colombo Telegraph reliably learns that over 20 odd names of persons in commanding positions including that of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and acting Defense Minister Maithripala Sirisena’s name were mentioned in the report.
Sirisena was acting Defence Minister during the last few days of the war during which many of the crimes alleged to have happened had taken place.
The removal of names from the report was a compromise reached by both sides to prevent backlash locally and to ensure that Sirisena’s name is not included, Colombo Telegraph learns.
Meanwhile President Maithripala Sirisena contradicted the UNHRC boss Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein‘s version of withholding the names of War Crime perpetrators and Human Rights abusers when he spoke to media heads and editors at the President’s house last Friday.
President Sirisena said that his government managed to prevent publishing the names of alleged war criminals in the report of the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Promoting Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka.”If Rasjapaksa were in power, names of perpetrators would have been made public” he said.
This is contradicting to what Hussein said when he released the report. He said on Wednesday; “We have not cited names because we were looking at broader patterns of organisation and planning which breach the threshold of … war crimes and crimes against humanity … It was apparent that organisation and planning [took place] in the commission of many of these crimes”.

That was the end of war and terrorists fought to the last one to save themselves. SLG was fighting with the most ruthless terrorist organization in the world. A terrorist organization that recruited children, mastered suicide bombs, and always took human shields. LTTE’s modus operandi when faced with a difficult military situation is to take a human shield and create a humanitarian disaster. Even the coward Pulidevan had stated in an interview that if they can create a humanitarian disaster the intl community would intervene and stop SL war. That was their aim.
Proper investigation reports put the number of deaths around 7000-8000. That is together with civilians and LTTE cadres. And SLA has done the offensive in extreme difficult conditions facing the bullets from LTTE and suicide bombs while managing international pressure.

i know you want the rest of the world to forget. But the reality must be stated. It was the final encounter between the most ruthless terrorist organisation, LTTE and SL army in a war of 30 years. The ruthless terrorists’ took a human shield, positioned their guns among people, and stole the rice sacks the government had been sending for civilians. Even in this situation the number of deaths did not exceed than 7000. And SL gover managed the refugee case without bothering anyother and made them returned within 2-3 years. SLG did demining, provided the people with what is needed and even rehabilitated the soft core LTTE cadres numbering 13000. This is the truth you try to conceal.
Actually this is a job well done by SLG especially given how the syrian crisis has given a large refugee crisis to the world

1. Yes the country was unfairly targeted and a process of whitewashing the LTTE began and continues. In other words when GOSL was working towards peace the LTTE remnants continued the war.
2. Armed forces were angels when compared with the ruthless but cowardly LTTE. When you need to tackle a ruthless terrorist, you have to tackle it accordingly and I have no issue with it. I hope and pray the terrorist leaders were killed inhumanely. The armed forces is not established to pet terrorists, it is formed to kill terrorists and any threat the country is facing. So the end of war was a military encounter of these ruthless terrorists and a legitimate army of this country to defend the country.
3. do you think you can ignore valid points by acting stupid? Armed forces will destroy and fight any threat the country is facing, It was Pulidevan himself said that if LTTE could create a humanitarian disaster the international community can intervene and will save LTTE. Your claims on 1971 is hilarious and irrelevant.
4. where did the armed forces use a human shield? Give a single example. So you accept that LTTE used a human shield and shot at fleeing civilians. And you realize when LTTE use a human shield that means civilians can die which is totally out of control of the SLn army.
5. The government had supplied enough food to the people according the statistics they have. Not only that the government had been providing food and medical supplies for tamils in LTTE held areas for 30 years knowing that LTTE itself is using it. There are media records of LTTE having used food supplies sent to civilians to build bunkers.
6. Demand any sane person would never make. It was a war situation and asking how, how much and when is hilarious. That is because you have nothing left to say. The most sensible report make an estimate of that range. And the number of injured also supports that estimate. How did they die? Ask the LTTE fellows who held a human shield.
7. The rehabilitation camps were closed and people were returned within two and three years. That is even before the PC elections were done. It is a simple google search to find about rehabilitation camps. Also operation manik farm a book written by a SLn muslim shows how the government tackled the refugee crisis. The very reason there is no any media report on tamils needing resettlement is enough evidence that the issue has been solved. The western world can learn a lot of things from SLG on how to manage a refugee situation.
8. Foreign countries funded at times but SL government handled and funded it. If not for SL government no one can do demining.
9. It is in public that SLG released 13000 LTTE cadres after rehabilitation. There are media reports. There are BBC documentaries done on LTTE cadres who were given education by the SLG in Hindu College Colombo at gover expense and helping them.

I’ve looked at the comments below as well. I think that your comments are fair, and your point of view is one from which we can move on to reconcilliation. We should not start inquiring in to what really happened after taking up a priori stands.
As you say, the denouement of a 30 year war was necessarily going to be bloody. The Tigers were indeed greatly to blame for what happened. Individual government soldiers may have acted out of pure hatred, some out of perverted lust. The Rajapaksas exploited racist tendencies among us, the Sinhalese. That was clearly to be seen during the recent Parliamentary Election campaign. We heard Gota talking. He projected little of the “milk of human-kindness” when he spoke. Massacres may have been ordered in the belief that the government could terrorise the entire country into subjugation. There is no more Tiger threat to Sri Lanka, yet they want to stoke such fears among a people sick of violence.
I appeal to our Tamil brethren: “Do not put forward simplistic views when the reality was so complex”. Also, to move forward, forgiveness and generous, deliberate forgetting may be necessary. Many of us, Sinhalese, never supported the war, and we now say to you that we are sorry that so much suffering was inflicted on you.
