The Executive Committee of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has said that they do not recognize Dr. Wiswa Warnapala as the Acting General Secretary of the UPFA.
A senior UPFA politician today also questioned why Dissanayake was sending such a letter instead of Warnapala who is supposed to be the acting General Secretary of the UPFA.
Meanwhile a group of UPFA Lawyers had met the Elections Commissioner to voice their protest over the sacking of the General Secretary, today.
A Lawyer said that the group had argived that the removal of a General Secretary of a contesting political party after announcing an election is illegal. However, he refused to comment on the response of the Commissioner in this regards.
This senior Lawyer went on to say that in accordance with the MoU signed by political parties in the UPFA, the removal of the General Secretary is not possible without the consent of the EC.
Also this Lawyer said that according to the UPFA MoU the general Secretary cannot be sacked without filing a charge sheet and also giving adequate time for him to reply to the charges.
He said that the UPFA Lawyers were confident that the Courts would annul the new appointment as soon as it hears a case filed against the removal of Premajayanth.
On Friday, three days ahead of the Parliamentary polls slated for Monday (17 August) the court gave an order removing the general secretaries of the opposition United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and its main constituent Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
Colombo District Court issued enjoining orders preventing UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayanth and SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa from holding their current posts in the respective parties.
Former UPFA MPs Duminda Dissanayake and Dr. Wiswa Warnapala were appointed to function as acting general secretaries of the SLFP and the UPFA respectively.
Colombo District Court issued the orders following two complaints filed by Duminda Dissanayake and Wiswa Warnapala. The enjoining order is valid until August 24.
Meanwhile sources say that the charges against the two secretaries are, engaging in activities which could harm the reputation, wellbeing and progression of the SLFP, engaging in acts which could be harmful to party policies and the leader and conspire with those acting against party policies.
