SLMC Has Become A Shameful Liability On The Community

By Latheef Farook

Latheef Farook

It was deliberate deception and calculated betrayal by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.

This is how most Muslims describe the SLMC decision to join the very United Peoples Front Alliance, UPFA, government which it severely criticised to win votes and deceive people during the recent eastern provincial council elections.

Muslims were suspicious of SLMC when it criticised the government, while being part of the it, in view of its past record of letting down the community. As a result most Muslims were indifferent to recent provincial council elections. They only voted in response to appeals by mosques in the hope that this time the SLMC will honour its promises.

However Muslims were once again deceived when the SLMC joined the government without seeking any assurance to solve some of the community’s burning issues. This is nothing but shamming by the SLMC to harvest votes.

Muslims are not against joining the government. As a minority community Muslims need to work hand in hand with the government in power. However, they wanted to do so ensuring their rights and dignity. Side-lined by the government, the Muslim community has been facing numerous serious issues.

To cite few examples more than 120,000 or so Muslims were driven out mercilessly within hours by the LTTE in October 1990. Most of them continue to languish in refugee camps in appalling conditions in and around Puttalam even to this day. They expected to return to their lands after the defeat of the LTTE. However, as even pointed out by Minister Rishard Badurdeen, the government remains indifferent to the pathetic plight of these victims. Declared as old IDP and ignored by all they were allowed to rot.

In the east Muslims claim that their lands were acquired under various pretexts and the latest being the acquisition of Karumalai village in Mutur after evicting 105 families without any notice as claimed by Muslims there. There is uncertainty in Colombo too following the forceful ejection of Muslims from Slave Island and the acquisition of commercial property in Fort.

Instead of relief there has been a steady rise of chauvinism and Sinhalisation since the defeat of LTTE in May 2009. This includes organised campaign, perhaps sponsored by external forces, demonising Muslims as plotting to turn this island into a Muslim country. The aim of this ridiculous and vicious campaign is to poison the minds of mainstream Sinhalese perhaps to create an anti-Muslim pogrom. As part of this campaign, in an extremely dangerous move, a handful of Buddhist monks who are supposed to preach Lord Buddha’s message of peace and harmony, have been used to attack Mosques inciting Sinhalese against Muslims. These activities intensified since the arrival of Israelis who remain sworn enemies of Islam and Muslims worldwide.

The question asked by Muslims in general is why didn’t the SLMC raise these issues before joining the government? Instead simply sold out the community in such demeaning manner that Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader R. Sampanthan accused the SLMC of betraying the Muslims for positions and selfish considerations by going against the mandate given.

“The SLMC was able to win so many seats because of its strong criticism of the government during the election campaign and the Muslims voted for it in the hope that the SLMC would maintain its independence. The SLMC neglected Muslim aspirations before and after the elections and talked a lot about its bargaining power during the election campaign. Now with its surrender to the government, what bargaining can the SLMC do? asked Sampanthan”.

Since the formation of the UPFA more than seven years ago SLMC parliamentarians struck deals and joined the government individually and collectively. The consensus is that in doing so they abandoned the interest of the community which will never forgive the SLMC for its support to the 18th amendment to the constitution.

The Muslim community was fed up for long with the SLMC in view of the repeated allegations of corruption, opportunism, greed for positions and power and factional fighting turning the community into laughing stock.

It was under such circumstances came the eastern provincial council elections. From the time the election was announced all what the SLMC spoke was about positions and not a word about Muslim issues.

Dealing with the circumstance which brought the SLMC into being it is worthy to note that in the mid-1980s Muslim community was side-lined and remained frustrated .It was around this time President J.R.Jayawardene arrogantly dismissed the Muslims stating that they could leave the government if they wished to when they opposed his move to bring in the Israelis here.

Thus the Political conditions were extremely conducive then to establish a separate party for Muslims.

However all five Muslim parliamentarians from the east, A.R.M.Mansoor,Fareed Uduma Lebbe, M.E.H Mahroof, M.A.Abdul Majeed and Dr Fareed Meera Lebbe- opposed tooth and nail the formation of SLMC stating that the interest of Muslims in the North and East differ from those of the Muslims in the rest of the country. They, together with almost every Muslim politician from the south, warned that such a party could divide communities and isolate the Muslims. These five parliamentarians refused to participate in the Indian imposed provincial council elections.

However, the then Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka D.N.Dixit, self-declared Indian viceroy in Colombo, wanted Muslim participation to hoodwink the world. Dixon who openly told A. R.M .Mansoor that “India is here to serve the Tamils and not the Muslims” brought pressure on the government and got the SLMC registered as a political party, although the Elections Commissioner initially refused to do so on the grounds that it was a religious based party. Dixit, according to many, also financed the SLMC which used the Indian Peace Keeping force, IPKF, office as its office during the first provincial council elections.

The SLMC, outcome of communal politics of the two major communities and opportunistic Muslim politics, came with the slogan of Islam, Sharia and unity. Islam and Sharia disappeared at birth. Today the party is split into more than half dozen factions. The enmity within those who came to bring unity is such that they attack even opponent’ Iftar functions. This is the type of unity which they claimed to achieve.

Within few years after its establishment, disillusioned people started distancing themselves from the party which they help establish as they were quick to realise that the party was a one man show to promote personal agendas far away from Islam and serving Muslims.

Today the SLMC has become a shameful liability on the community. The reality is that racist politics of mainstream parties and religion based politics of the so called SLMC has brought the country and the Muslim community where we are today.

Despite three decades of killings and destruction the inevitable reality is that the Muslims in the north and east had the Hobson ’choice of living with Tamils while the Muslims in the rest of the country had to live with others. Of course, racists, be they politicians or laymen, will remain active till the end of the world .However it is time that the Muslim community turn to mainstream parties to ensure a better future.

If Hakeem had any interest in the welfare of muslims he would have eagerly grasped the offer of the TNA to jointly form the governing coalition with itself and the UNP and also have the chief ministership. Alas! he chose to side with the Rajapaksa party without winning anything for the muslim people. When he supported the 18th amendment also he failed to consider the welfare of the Sri Lankan people for personal political benefits.

The Rajapaksa cabal has a good friend in Hakeem who will continue to fool the muslims and deliver the support the cabal needs to rape and pillage the country. Shame on the greedy politicians and shame on those who support them.

… that is why Idi Mahin had given specific instructions to Sajin Vaas to see to Hakeem’s “needs” while he is in the United States.

dinuk, you sounds a bum-sucker of Sajith! Can you tell us how many ancient dagabas, ancient treasure troves Sajith has plundered during his dictator father ruled the country? You seem to suffer from an incurable disease of not being able to understand the difference between strong and honest leadership and crooked dictatorship! It is people like you who have brought about the downfall and degradation of the politics of present day Sri Lanka by trying to promote gallery politics. Kick on the ass of any prostitute and dozens of political refugees like you will be thrown out from the petticoat!

It serves the muslim people right for voting for the lying and self serving hakeem and believing rishard bathurdeen who again has done nothing for them. The mosques should have let the people decide on who they think is the better suited to serve them without leading the people to more lies and betrayal. All of us are Sri Lankans even though from different race and religious backgrounds. Therefor we should look for candidates who are willing to help all Sri Lankans and not those of any one race or religion. A promise of Sharia and Islam was an outright lie that even a little child could see throuh.

IT IS “SRI LANKA MUNAFIQ’S(HYPOCRITES) CONGRESS
WE MUSLIMS WERE VERY MUCH BETTER OFF WHEN WE WERE IN THE
MAINSTREAM PARTIES LIKE THE UNP AND SLFP.I AM SURE AZATH WILL AGREE
THEN CAME ISLAMIC SOCIALIST FRONT, AND SLMC, WHICH IS NOW DIVIDED
    INTO SO MANY GROUPS.
PERSONALLY I AM OPPOSED TO COMMUNAL PARTIES AND POLITICS.
SLMC CANNOT PROMISE SHARIA AND ISLAM BECAUSE THEIR FOUNDER HIMSELF DID NOT KNOW SHARIAH OR ISLAM.SHARIAH CANNOT BE APPLIED IN A COUNTRY WHERE MUSLIMS ARE A MINORITY. THEY MAY BE ABLE TO FOOL THE MUSLIMS IN THE EAST BUT NOT IN THE NORTH.
IN THE NORTH MUSLIMS GOT ON WELL. THERE HAVE BEEN EVEN A MUSLIM MAYOR IN JAFFNA. MUSLIMS OF THE NORTH, GOT ON EVEN WITH PRABHA BY GIVING
“KAPPANG”. THE MOMENT ASHRAFF WANTWED HIS OWN KINGDOM IN THE EAST,
PRABHA ASKED THE MUSLIMS TO QUIT WITHIN A COUPLE OF HOURS. THIS IS HISTORY.MY ADVICE TO MUSLIMS IS TO VOTE FOR ANYONE OTHER THAN SLMC
    AND OF COURSE JHU!!!!!

SLMC is a strange contradiction. Ashraf sacrificed the future of generations of Muslims in the country by radicalising the EP Muslims into claiming a separate identity for them – different to the rest of the Muslims in the South. Now Hakeem of Kandyan origin, entirely from outside the EP, is the disputed leader to the chagrin of most leaders and people in the EP. He can only survive if the EP Muslims are divided and so they remain. It was tragic to hear him say during the Dambulla crisis “Only God can bring justice to the Muslims” The poor man forgot he was the Minister of Justice.

Muslims in the rest of the country now live in fear. They know the Ashraff type of Muslim politics of the 1980s has now made enemies of the Sinhalese. Both under the UNP and SLFP coalition parties Muslims were safer going with both sides. Now bringing the religious factor into the scene, Muslims are neither here or there. Such an eventuality was feared by senior Muslim leaders like ARM Mansoor who told me in the late 80s “Ashraf’s selfish politics will pose a danger to all Muslims in the coming decades” He was not wrong. Mr Mansoor is still with us and will confirm this.

What a shame to SLMC., Hakeem has joined Rajapaksha to safeguard his Justic Ministee Post & all facilities prvided to him including a Trip to USA. Hi Hakeem you need to pay for all these for betraying us

This bugger Hakeem cheated on his wife, Qudus’s daughter and was keeping Kumari. CBK got her catchers to film Hakeem in bed with Kumari and used the video to blackmail Hakeem. Mind you this is the President of a Country CBK blackmailing MP’s in Parliament. This resulted in Hakeem avoiding Kumari to prevent the matter going public. Hakeem avoiding Kumari, led Kumari to immolate herself outside Carnival Icecream joint at Colpetty, Hakeem’s father in law’s concern. So how can anyone rely or trust individuals of this calibre?

Hakeem must be held responsible for the death of his mistress Kumari.

Will there be an investigation into the cause of the self immolation of Kumari.

“..However it is time that the Muslim community turn to mainstream parties to ensure a better future…”

Whom to turn to? That is the million dollar worth of question! Historically SLFP and the many concoctions of it NEVER did anything for and on behalf of the progress and development of the country. What they have done is all the blunders and destructions one could ever imagine! From Banda’s Sinhala only through 71 JVP insurrection, Chandrika’s minus economy to Mahinda’s despotic regime the degradation and destruction is very obvious. But if one were to consider the historical performance and policies of the UNP one gets the right perspective and direction as to how to go about solving the problems in the country. Firstly, even the very name of the party is United National Party! There you begin with unity! UNP has saved this country from the beggar status experienced during the SLFP era of Banda and Sirima, introduced liberal economy, opened the closed doors of the country to the free world, adopted more and more democratic principles, established relations with the outside world, uplifted the living conditions of the masses and many more things of that sorts. UNP tried its best to achieve a decent and political solution to the ethnic problem, created a condition in the country where all the communities in the country could live peacefully with dignity and respect for each other without the frictions of racism. War was not a priority in its agenda. If one were to analyze their modes of governance and visionary policies this basic principle and equality could be observed.

If Muslims Tamils and other nationalities in this country ever want to live with dignity and peacefully in this country it is UNP and UNP only that they must rely on to do that. So next time there is an election, I hope there would be, go and vote for UNP!

Silva absolutely. The civic minded should establish a Govt. of the United People of the Country for the masses to be delivered. hence the UNP, the only Party that has brought some degree of real development in the post Independence era, whereas the others have brought havoc, division and mayhem. Once the UNP is elected every effort should be made to weed out buggars like Sajith whose father was responsible for ruining the UNP, with violence and hatred.
