The Sri Lankan Government has received all round endorsements from the United States following the passing of the controversial legislation to establish the Office of the Missing Persons.

High ranking US officials congratulated the Sri Lankan Government for passing the Bill, terming it as an important step towards achieving reconciliation and justice for all.
Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Biswal in a Tweet said that the passing of the Bill was a ‘huge stride towards advancing truth and reconciliation in Sri Lanka,’ while Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Tom Malinowski said that the Bill was a ‘historic step in Sri Lanka’s pursuit of justice, reconciliation and accountability for all.’
US Ambassador in Sri Lanka, Atul Keshap said that the Office of Missing Persons law is an historic milestone in the path towards meaningful national reconciliation for all in Sri Lanka.
The Bill was passed without a vote yesterday amidst much opposition from the MPs of the Joint Opposition who said that the Bill contained dangerous provisions and can be a risk to the country’s national security and its unity.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that every Member of Parliament who supports the Bill will be held responsible for ‘betraying the country and the armed forces.’
