Sri Lanka: How Pornography Will Destroy An Entire Young Generation

Pornography is now very much a celebration of the misguided sexuality that dominates nearly every aspect of youth culture and lies at the core of Sri Lanka’s “open” economy. Adult entertainment, as it is benignly called, glorifies the dehumanization of “sexy” (often white) women. It champions a section of the human community that is devoid of compassion, empathy and love.

Young Sri Lankans see on their mobile phones or laptops and tablets sex scenes, eroticized in their virile masculine power that carries out the violent abuse, public degradation, sexual humiliation and torture of women whose personalities of wife and mother or sister have been removed, whose only desire is to debase themselves in the service of unfettered male lust.

The predominantly male audiences seem to unquestioningly accept a predatory world where the physically weak and the sexually vulnerable are objects to exploit while the powerful and well-endowed men are narcissistic and violent deities.

Some of the more impressionable of them then physically experiment with these contrived episodes in real life, and either force random targets to their will, or expect highly erotic sex from their docile and bashful wives, both of which are either plainly illegal or border on domestic violence and statutory rape.

sexworkerPopular porn on the Web appears to earn far more than what general movies generate, where alluring women, drugs, alcohol and temporary consensual sex in rich exotic locations offer enticing departures from everyday reality of the mundane.

Audiences are invited to yearn to be rich, powerful and considered celebrities by how many women they can sexually gratify. That nearly all of us will never attain all these ambitions is emblematic of our collective self-delusion and the effectiveness of a culture awash in manipulation and lies with their origins at state level, and now on par with most other commercial marketing that has swamped Sri Lankan media.

Porn seeks to eroticize this cruelty of man on his fellow men. The women plead to be physically abused. Porn caters to degrading stereotypes where the women are meek and sexually submissive slaves. In porn, ordinary human imperfections do not exist.

The comforting smell of a loved one, their sweat, the familiar breath, heartbeats pounding against the beloved’s chest and intimate touch are erased along with caring tenderness. Women in porn are packaged commodities used as pleasure dolls and sexual puppets to be handled at will. They are stripped of true mixtures of human emotions such as love, sacrifice and generosity.

Porn is not about sex that humans learn naturally about, if one defines sex as a mutual act between two loving partners, but about lonely masturbation, a solitary auto-arousal devoid of intimacy and love.

The cult of the individual self with sharing starkly absent, is the essence of porn, and consistent with the core of corporate culture that has permeated our culture since the late 1970’s with increasingly harsh consequences for especially poor people. Porn, like global capitalism, is where human beings are sent to die a lonely death of their humanity.

Within a very conservative and gentle culture steeped in tradition, there are but a few people left in that voiceless wasteland, who grasp the immense danger of allowing pornography to replace intimacy, loving sex and compassionate love. Very few health or community welfare professionals speak out or reveal their knowledge in open forums.

Most mistakenly believe that viewing pornography is a personal matter, and different to the unacceptability of financially exploiting and physically abusing a young girl or boy on the road but acceptable to do so in artificial settings in Western countries on the set of a porn film.

Some feminists, who have betrayed the hard-fought basic fundamental rights of women, are reluctant to openly attack porn as a form of sexual exploitation, inhibiting assertiveness and self-empowerment of ordinary women. Feminism, for them, is no longer about the liberation of women who are oppressed; it is merely defined by a small group of women who are successful, English-literate, powerful and financially wealthy and therefore able to influence the elite powerbase.

It would seem that the Internet porn industry has hijacked the sexuality and human connectivity as intimate lovers, of an entire culture and is laying waste to a whole generation of boys, with average ages from young adolescents and by default, lay waste to a generation of girls who will be deprived of appropriate male attention and intimacy.

The largely American industry is financially in cahoots with the Internet media, banks and global distributing networks. With the absence of love, women are reduced to three orifices and two hands. Porn is therefore woven into the corporate destruction of intimacy and natural sexual tendencies and works to destabilise familial cohesion in vulnerable third-world nations like Sri Lanka.

The addictive nature of porn means that it takes more and more stimulus for arousal; so porn makers produce videos that are increasingly violent and debasing. Blunt and aggressive anal penetration triggers anal prolapse, a condition in which the inner walls of a person’s rectum collapse and protrude from the anus. Many actors require analgesics and often anal and vaginal reconstructive surgery. However, naïve young viewers do not see these realities, and often force their partners to sodomy.

The income of the global porn industry is estimated at hundreds of billion, with the United States market leading. There are estimated to be several hundred million Internet porn pages, several million porn Web sites, and several score million search engine requests for porn daily, with key search words like “sex” most shockingly entered in Sri Lanka.

Along with the rise of pornography there has been an explosion in sex-related violence, including domestic abuse, rape and daylight gang rape. It normalises rape and unilateral will for sex. Cheaper access via a mobile phone ensures delivery of porn to men and boys in highly concentrated neighbourhoods in the third world. So, unlike with laptops and desktops, they are assured of privacy.

The lure of porn targets adolescents when they are just beginning to construct their sexual identity. That way, they are addicted for life. If one begins by cruel, hard core, violent porn then one is not going to want intimacy and connection.

It naturally follows that teen boys will lose interest in sex with real young women. Sustaining erections with real women then becomes difficult as their imagined ideal is absent. Organizations that fight child porn associated with paedophilia and do not fight adult porn on mobile or “smart” devices are therefore allowing a whole generation to be destroyed.

That is the real tragedy of our times.

Yes. You do have an excellent point. This is a global “problem”.

It used to be that you people went to the Temple, the Kovil, the Church and the Mosque, infrequently or frequently, and were interested in sports and other activities that involved a lot of exercise. They were able to math and arithmetic without the aid of a calculator, was able to find the square root and cube root buy long land and used the log table or the s;ode rule. All these made them think.

Will religion and restrictions, avoid this mass media Adult Entertainment of youth, especially young men? They need challenges for example sports, business or in industry. On the other hand, in religiously restricted societies, like in the Middle East, Google Found the great number of porn site searches. According Alexia, Port Site Searches are among the top 100 sites.

    http://tribune.com.pk/story/823696/pakistan-tops-list-of-most-porn-searching-countries-google/

It further revealed that six of the top eight porn-searching countries were Muslim states. The country at number two in the list was Egypt, while Iran, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Turkey came in at numbers four, five, seven and eight, respectively.

The fact that porn trends within the region can even be tracked was impressive, given that the sale of pornographic material has been banned in nearly every Arab country except Lebanon and Turkey.

More recently, the Saudi Arabian government also announced that it had hacked and disabled about 9,000 Twitter accounts associated with the publication of pornography and arrested many of the handles’ owners. The move was organised by the Commission for the Promotion and Prevention of Vice, also known as Haia, the Saudi religious police.

Many Muslim states declare that cemented social morals should not be violated. The data out there, however, suggest their public may feel otherwise.

How true.Everything that the first “HIS EXCELLENCY” touched is a failure. The constitution, the culture, the education, etc etc. What had succeeded is the mobility of rogues, crooks in the parliament ( he was also a crook – remember the Rs 1 an acre land deal).

I am also told that a foul mouthed man in Yellow cloth suggested that Liquor, drugs and Porno be made available to the youth of the Tamil areas to destroy them.

I do not know whether his advise was accepted but the Jaffna youth seek a Benz car.

I never had a problem like that when i was a teenager.I start the day with an erection and most of the day with it and end the day with an erection. The biggest problem was how to get rid of it.

The author is not taking his mind back to his teenage days and unduly worried about teenagers.porn or no porn, erection starts early morn.

I’m surprised you’re aware that the hand can perform many functions rather than just type all day. Good for you!

“Sri Lanka: How Pornography Will Destroy An Entire Young Generation”, just trying to be helpful to save an Entire Young Sri Lankan Generation, in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

However, what is harder to save is the deteriting intelligence of the Modayas, Mootals and Foools, who have infected the Cabinet and the Parliament, and they keep voting for Mahinda Rajapaksa. They are better off watching pornorgraphy to get their brains fixed. May be multiple Common Sense Leaflets may help.

The system of governance democrazy economies are built on industries, such as deceptive media (Hollywood / Bollywood), Interest ‘riba’ banking, psychedelic drugs, gambling, prostitution, alcohol, pornography and weapons of mass destruction. It’s big; profitable business about promoting and retaining market share.

“A democracy is a volcano, which conceals the fiery materials of its own destruction. These will produce an eruption, and carry desolation in their way.”

Not to mention permitting men to keep as many women as they like, covering women from head to toe and degrade them in many more ways.

Author seems unduly worried about this issue when we have real problems in hand

I’m sure even the likes of Jim Softly and K A Sumanasekera will enjoy a bit of Sumana Gomez or Pamela Anderson hahaahahahah

Good topic of discussion although it is very general and bears little evidence to show its relevance to Sri Lankan youth. Then on the other hand you cannot expect much more from a person living overseas. What we would like to see is some solutions to the problem being suggested and show how to implement them.

      Here are a few suggestions:

No more separate boys & girls schools

Police / GovSL encouraging couples to meet in parks instead of forbidding this.

Proper sex education on school / via drama series on television

Instead of raiding brothels only after policemen are refused (free) access perhaps legitimize this activity as it is a great source to get rid of excessive hormones for those who are cursed with that?

      Just a few ideas …

Are you trying to boost your online profile to impress some prospective socially-conservative employers? Or are you planning to contest in the forthcoming elections?

Why are people so insensitive and cynical about what has been written? We all have mothers, sisters, wives, daughters and even grand-daughters. Can you imagine ANY of these precious people in a situation as depicted by this writer? We must find righteousness within US before we scream for righteous governments.

When your wife is not interested in sex and refuses to cooperate, then the most convenient way to vent your frustrations and relieve the tension is to watch some porn on the computer! It acts as a safety valve.

Were it not for porn on the Internet, many men would not have any sexual outlet or sex life to speak of, especially in view of the fact massage parlours are so expensive that few can afford to visit them twice a week.

Shouldn’t the answer to this be correct sex education and ensuring our youth know there’s a difference between porn and real life much like anything else that is part of the fictional entertainment world?

Should not our parents and teachers educate our children about the content in movies, video games and anything else that is detached from reality as being just that? Maybe the issue is our cultures attitude towards shying away of speaking about certain taboo subjects, because it makes us blush or feel it’s inappropriate to have such discussions with certain people… like our kids.

If you have that attitude then get ready for your children to learn what’s right and wrong on their own as they discover what’s out there. Stop blaming everyone else and trying to change the world (which is obviously futile) for what you should be responsible for as parents! If you’ve failed to do that, then you’ve failed at the most important thing and any amount of political nonsense you sprout is nothing more than a misguided affair of an ego that doesn’t want to look itself in the mirror.

The stand taken by the author is puritanical and is attempting to project his archaic and parochial values on others.

You cite Middle Eastern countries as a benchmark for moral behavior, the fact that Arab men are some of the most perverse sexual deviants alive is oblivious to you. Our migrant house maids are expected to perform sexual favors to fathers and sons of the same households perhaps because of the lack of a substitute.

I believe that if access is broadened to both Pornography and prostitution (legalize and regulate), there will be far less spousal abuse and rape.

Men must have options, if you take those options away, we will all become like a pack of wolves hunting for the closest piece of meat!!

I hope you are not imagining seeing things…. there is no mention of any Arab or Muslim connection here… perhaps you are confusing yourself with other forums you visit?

The Author is having huge problems. Maybe in SL this might be the case, but its not with the rest of the world.
Alchohol & hard drugs are much more dangerous on this Planet. Corruption in Sri Lanka is also dangerous to the youth.
One tends to forget that pornographic films are made with full consent of those women in it. There is no better way for many women who loack a proper education to earn so much of cash in such a short time.
And to my opinion I think that the whole thing about “Sex” is, that its just overrated. Women hold it to be something priceless.

Having porn in mobile phone is a serious and punishable offence in Sri Lanka but the privacy of an individual also violated.
Porn desensitizes sex therefore use of these devices for the underaged stand banned, due to practical problems hardly regulated. The age 18+ for using these modern devices depend on income, show of wealth.
‘No real love possible without costly mobile phone’, is the latest thinking of many a youth. At the first sight they demand mobile numbers and whoever calls they answer thus they befriend strangers, ignore neighbours! Status conscious they avoid their own classmates. The disparity in income affects sociability. No wonder, the youth turn to violent means to reach a level high in the social order and become criminals. The rate of suicide is also increased. Steps to eradicate porn is not only limited to Muslim nations. China is very strict on the production of these films and distribution, even google is blocked. In India village elders banned it effectively where only arranged marriages possible. Commentators be conscious of the difference between polygamy and promiscuity. Sex education is there with lot of reading materials available free. Why should teach in class rooms?

For Sri Lanka it would be good to have mixed schools so that youngsters learn that you can actually be yourself when meeting members of the opposite sex.

Girls are kept in-house until marriage. Meanwhile, boys use porn to let go of some hormonal steam so to speak. Boy thinks girl probably wants to do what they see in the porn (anal pounding, ejaculating preferably on her face)

Then boy accidentally miscalls and guess what: the number belongs to a girl! Boy is sooo delighted / excited that he just talked to a woman that he decided that from now on he will keep calling her until she starts to hate men. Day in day out.

And even the police beliefs that it is necessary to forbid those couples that actually like to meet, to sit on the walls of Galle Fort and other locations (parks in Colombo)
