Sri Lanka Is In The Hands Of A Single Family: Rathana Thera

The country is being run according to the whims and fancies of a single family, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) MP Athuraliye Rathana thera has stated.

Athuraliye Rathana thera

Athuraliye Rathana thera

Speaking at the launch of the proposal for the 19th Constitutional amendment prepared by Pivithuru Hetak (A better tomorrow) movement led by him, the monk whose party is a member of the UPFA coalition has accused the Rajapaksa-regime of running the country according to the whims and fancies of a handful of officials in the government service.

“Every single state-level decision is made by a dictatorial hand; the country is in the hands of a single family and a few government officials whom this family heeds to,” Rathana thera had stated.

During his speech at the event he had gone on to criticize the decision made by President Rajapaksa to hold the Presidential election in a few months, describing it as an ‘arbitrary, stubborn and unwise action’.

“Today, the necessity for a Presidential election has been decided by the planetary movements and astrologers. We would like to remind the President that the need for a Presidential election should be decided by the law and the people’s mandate not your horoscope,” he has said.

Meanwhile, Rathana thera had also commended the stance taken by the leftist parties and its leaders in writing to the President, urging him to hold the election and instead implement the much needed Constitutional amendments to preserve democracy.

Is it the right time for the rats to jump ships?

Dr Jackyll and Mr Hide has already begun the process why not Athuraliye Rathana?

What I understand is all these are part of the plan to divert public attention from the real issues. If the Athuraliye Rathana and Hela Urumaya are genuine why can’t they leave the Government? Why they are trying to promote the same person with different cloths? 2 times he promised that he will abolish the executive Presidency. The same person who promised 2 times to abolish the executive Presidency is asking his 3rd term also. Can Rathana or anyone else trust this person? I am sure this time also he will promise that he will abolish EP as he don’t feel shame to say it again. All these are to white wash the destroyer of the Nation?

        Native,

        Agree.

However, rats only jump ships when they see another ship to board in the horizon. Not otherwise.

Have they seen a new ship to board? Which one? Where?

Please consult your elders and enlighten us stupid citizens.

        Cheers!

“However, rats only jump ships when they see another ship to board in the horizon. Not otherwise.”

Remember these are Sri Lankan rats.

“Have they seen a new ship to board? Which one? Where? “

Something similar to the one VP was desperately awaiting to board. If they tone down anti Muslim rhetoric they might get couple of Ships of the Desert.

These people were at the epi-centre of the political network that fished all the villagers for the feast of the president’s family. This cheating machinery always woke up with great concepts to rally people just before elections. Gullible people always fell prey, and this time too, they will be trapped. Once the fishing spree is over after the elections, these people will just leave the catch on the doorsteps of the presidential palace and go to sleep again. Then, wake up again just before the next election.

Just ask yourself. Did they have this energy when the 18th amendment was passed? Did they have this energy when CJ was impeached with unconstitutional means? Just think.

His sudden uprsing is highly suspicious.

Neverthelss welcome. Given endless bickering of schoolyard kids of the opposition.

But, we must watch our steps here.

Let me make a prediction. Rathana thera will lead the fight for a 19th amendment. People will be left in darkness about what it should achieve, but make it appear to be a fight worth fighting. MR will let it gather momentum unifying a lot of opposition forces. At the right time, he will agree to a 19th amendment, and Rathana thera will invite MR to pledge before “Dalada Maligawa”. MR will, as a great Sinhala-Buddhist, but postpone the passing of the 19th amendment to be done after the presidential election. Rathana Thera will then leave the catch at the doorsteps of the presidential palace. A 19th amendment maybe passed to strengthen 18th amendment.

I can be wrong, but dare to make this prediction.

            Thrishantha ,

My reading on this “Rathan Thero” is some what mixed , True it could be a trap but for me it’s more likely a genuine effort , if you go through the JH activities , Patali Champika & Rathana thero are more like in the same wave length as oppose to Udaya G , Patali C is not in MR’s good books since the inception of the wholly marriage , remember Patali was the only one who didn’t vote for 18A ,openly refused to sign the Sampoor deal , wasn’t even happy with the terms and conditions of infamous “Norrochale” power plant deal which was put forwarded by the Chinese, as a direct result of these unwanted hassle from Patali , MR was kind enough to strip his powerful ministry portfolio from him , he was utterly disappointed and disillusioned , now with Rathana thero , he was spearheading the awareness campaign of the Kidney disease in Rajarata area and up in arms against the regime for it’s lukewarm response , Rathana Thero was dead against the casino , drug Mafia and ethanol scandals ,but MR didn’t care two hoots about his concerns , carried away as usual , perhaps these continuous step motherly treatments might have triggered to fire a salvo against MR , if you carefully listen to him , he urged MR not to go ahead with the anticipated PE prior to 19A , and the same time he had the nerve to publicly confess ” I was wrong voting for 18A” and willing to do every thing possible to defeat MR , Rathana Thero and Patali are not like Mervin silva type politicians , MR’s selfish agendas might have attracted their down right racist ideology , but now they seem to understand that they were taken for a ride. this is how i read the whole drama , i may be wrong !

                vish ,

we need to look at things objectively , every body keep asking why doesn’t he resign , yes that could be another way of displaying your dissatisfaction , but it’s not the one and only way , remaining within the coalition has its merits though , say if he reign tomorrow , he will be another disappointed EX-government MP, and he ‘ll be treated as one (with host of special treatments ), but if you remain , your voice is heard and acceptable to many opposed to an opposition MP’s constant bickering , at least this will create some sort of awakening call among the coalition members within , Dew,Vasu, T.Vitharana, Rajiv W,Patali et al have already started and it’s a well come move .

moving forward ,as for MR , he must need parliament 2/3 majority to overcome his lopsided 18A , can he get his previous 2/3 now ? MR has only one way out ,that is seeking supreme court assistance ! but according to Former CJ SNS , MR can’t seek assistance as an individual , where would this take us ?

Your prediction may well come true. Do not be surprised.

The incumbant ruler was elected to dismantle the Executive Presidency. A very clear mandate. A promise to the people any decent man would have worked hard to honour.

Instead the guy brought in the 18th amendment. Hastned through the backdoor. To do exactly the opposite. Well supported by corrupt UPFA monkeys in the Parliament. The rest is history.

Now he walks around as nothing has happened. Wearing a silly “Kurakkan” Shawl. With a trademark, yet shameless smile on his face.

Idiotic electorate in SL has of course forgotten. This historic treachery against the people.

The dumb electorate is wondering how to give the “great saviour of the Sinhala Biddhism” a 3rd term.

Sri Lankans will get what they deserve!

            Cheers!

Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) MP Athuraliye Rathana thera,

Angulimala Thera, Athuraliye Rathana who was with Mara, maRa all this time.,see some light at the end of the tunnel and now wants to listen to Buddha, before he end up at the Apaya, Buddhist Hell.

Yes, even Angulimala Monks can be rehabilitated by Buddha.

Angulimala A Murderer’s Road to Sainthood

      http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/hecker/wheel312.html

      Angulimala

Angulimala, the robber and murderer, is one of the best known figures of the Buddhist scriptures, because of his dramatic life story. His conversion to monkhood and later to sainthood was exceptional as he seems to have been the only former criminal to be accepted into the Buddhist monastic order. The Buddha had often warned not to judge people from appearances and their external behavior. In Angulimala’s case, the Buddha had seen his hidden potential to win freedom, not only from his present low moral status and from rebirth in the lowest worlds of painful existence, but that Angulimala would also be able to gain the highest freedom from all suffering in this very life.

In Christianity, too, we find some instances of radical changes in the moral character of people: there is the “thief on the cross” at Golgatha who was promised by Jesus that he would be with him in paradise the next day; and the chief of a gang of robbers who was converted by Francis of Assisi and became a monk. Cases like these have always moved the hearts of the religious-minded and have raised the question how such changes could be possible. Angulimala’s story might give an answer to these questions.

At the Buddha’s time, at the court of King Pasenadi of Kosala, there was a learned brahman called Bhaggava Gagga who held the office of a Royal Chaplain and was thus one of the kingdom’s highest dignitaries. One night his wife, Mantani, gave birth to a son. Soon afterwards, the father cast the boy’s horoscope and to his consternation found that his son was born under the “robber-constellation” of the planets. This indicated that the boy would have within him a tendency to commit robbery. One can well imagine what the father must have felt when confronted with that shocking and unexpected revelation. On the day of the child’s birth, there was another disquieting event: all weapons and armory in the city of Savatthi had suddenly begun to sparkle.

In the morning, the brahman went to the palace as usual, and asked the king how he had slept. “How could I have slept well?” replied the king. “I woke up in the night and saw that my auspicious weapons lying at the end of my bed were in bright sparkle, so I was afraid and perturbed. Should this mean danger to the kingdom or my life?”

The brahman said: “Do not have any fear, O King! The same strange thing happened in the entire city, and it does not concern you. Last night my wife bore me a son, and unfortunately his horoscope had the robber-constellation. This must have caused the weapons to sparkle.”

“Will he be a lone robber or the chief of a gang?” — “He will do it alone, your Majesty. What if we were to kill him now and prevent future misdeeds?”

“As he would be a loner, O Teacher, let him be raised and properly educated. Then, perhaps, he may lose his evil propensities.”

To further this aim, the boy was called Ahimsaka, which means “Harmless.” When he grew up, he was quite well behaved, and unusually strong in body. But he was also studious and intelligent. So his parents had good reason to think that any evil dispositions in their son had been removed by a good education, and by the religious atmosphere of the home. This made them, of course, very happy.

        Amarasiri,

This Angulimala Damanaya is the biggest FIB in Buddhism. Buddha had no power to ameliorate sins of others as he was no God or a Magician. He was just another mortal. How could he absolve a man who had killed 999 people?

Where the heck has Rathana Thero & JHU been all this time?

They have been blindly backing the worst dictator, his family clan, henchmen & cronies this country has ever seen.

Funny. King’s brother and advisor Basil is in the audience. Leading UPFA monkeys are there too. Is this a joke?

Is this a mutiny? Or is it a dead-rope to the opposition from the cunning Rajapassa Clan & Co?

Are they trying to deflate rise of Sobitha Thero or any other as a Common Candidate?

Are they truly concerned and are repenting sinners? In which case they should be welcome.

      Cheers!

What my understanding is Rathana Thero doesn’t say the Prez elections is illegal. He doesn’t ask the ‘Paksa’ to stop doing so. All he wants is some amendments to the 18A.

Interesting points from Ben Hurling, Srilal, Thrishantha and others – Thanks guys!

Personally I don’t trust JHU or the JVP (This doesn’t mean that I am against the JVP). They both would rather prefer a Mara regime than a UNP government.
I too maybe wrong but hope for the best.

Very interesting. Agree holding Presidential elections based on Geocentric astrology is flawed and nonsense. There is no relationship to the inhabitants of a stationary Earth and the positions of the Planets with go around the Sun.

However, a good fraction of the populace was sufficiently brainwashed, including President Rajapaksa, to believe in such nonsense, that was originally started in the Middle east.

What the people need to do is expose the Family dynasty and get rid of the family dynasty.

Is Rathana thera totally honest? It seems he is trying to show the citizens that he is leading a campaign against Rajapaksa and by doing so he tries to retard the momentum of the efforts taken by Sobhitha Thera with the support of opposition parties to bring in a common candidate at the presidential elections. Surely, closer to the elections Rathana will start canvassing for Rajapaksa leaving the opposition in a helpless situation. If Rathana is genuinely keen in removing Rajapaksa’s powers he should first resign as an MP. These Bikkhu politicians should not be trusted for a moment.

    Dear Banthe/MP,
    Excellent communicator.
Please do not take this comment as criticism. I am a practising ‘Buddhist’ and after weighing things up and contemplating on the teachings, I trust the following words of wisdom from the ‘enlightened one’ should be remembered.

“Shaving your head does not make you a renuociate, if you are still full of recklessness and deceit.
How could someone possessed by craving and lust be considered a renunciate?”# Dammapada Verse 264

In your speech, you mentioned of having Mahinda as the (Hon.) president by amending the constitution. I am a bit confused here. If you genuinely fell for him please make him ‘walk the path’, which is the only path toward freedom from the hell he is in.

    The ‘Aarya Ashtangika Maargaya’
“This is the only way; there is no other that leads to clear seeing.
Follow this way and ‘Mara’ becomes disoriented.” #Dammapada Verse 274

    Two birds with one stone?

Champika Ranawaka and the ones who went on as laundry men to Rajapakshe will become silent in the days to come since this monk has louded it as no other sofar about the highly abusive nature of Rajapakshe.

The days ahead of us will make it very clear that Rajapakshes popularity will fall down as icy avalanche. Looters of this kind we had enough towards Premadasa era but today we the poeple have learnt lessions from the past. We must not put the blame on UNP and JVP again and again. Joint opposition will defeat UPFA will be a reality. DJ and all other self proclamied pundits will cough supportively Rajapakshes, but nothign will change towards further rise of Raja this time.

Rathana thero was a very popular figure among the Sinhalese sometimes back. But, at present it is Rev. Gnanasara who leads the Sinhala Buddhist people and Rathana Thero is now an outdated model. These propaganda of the Thero is only to keep the remaining few followers of him from leaving him. The Thero will never ever leave Rajapakses. The reasons are: (1)If he leaves Rajapakses all his criminal activities carried out during his JVP period would be exposed and the Thero would be indicted in the High Court resulting in incarceration for life. (2) The Thero would loose all his comforts and he would have to go on Pindapatha for his daily existence because all the maintenance of the Thero is done by the Rajapakses. (3) UNP will never entertain this Thero because UNP never trusts Bhikkus who cross over from other parties (4) Actually Rajapakses do not need this Thero because there are more energetic Bhikkus who are faithful to them. Therefore Rathana Thero will never ever leave the Government unless the Rajapakses kick him off!

    I fully agree with Anonymous.
Furthermore, One must understand why a person takes to robes (become a Sangha). To my understanding of Buddhism, that is to shorten the “Sansara Gamana” (Cycle of birth) much quicker than a lay-person could do. So it is to strive to attain “Nibbana” as quickly as possible. If so, such person should devote his full-time in a path to reach that goal. So it is to follow the “Ariya Ata Maga” (Eight fold path).
So why worry about mundane matters like politics. Let the lay-people handle those matters. Why should a Bhikku (if such is a real Bhikku) be worried about whether “A” or “B” or “Z” should run the country. Why should Bhikkus wanting to go to the Parliament or to the Provicial Council or to the Pradeshiya Sabha? Why should the ignorant (so called Buddhists) vote for them to get elected?
I personally hate / dislike any of the Sangha getting involved in politics. How could it that they could attain “Nibbana” by getting involved in politics or any other materialistic/ mundane matters. Could a Buddhist (a Sangha or a layman)who knows the Dhamma well explain this to me? I could not find any clue to this fact that the “Enlightened One” has ever sanctioned it. I Would appreciate it very much if anyone could do it for the benefit everybody (Buddhists or non Buddhists) including me.
As I see it the greatest disservice done to the followers of the Pristine Dhamma is the formation of the JHU and now the BBS, These organizations are leading the “Ignorant Buddhists” down a garden path. I call these Buddhists ignorant as they do not understand that supporting / following them does not offer them any spiritual awakening but brings the quite the opposite results. They are moved away from the Sathara Brahma Viharana of “Metta”, “Karuna”, “Muditha” and “Upekkha.”
If a knowledgeable person would want to correct me by proving what is stated here is wrong (with sound reasons based on the teachings of the Buddha), I am willing accept my mistakes.

The man nourished by simmered water will have no better arguments than leaving JHU with intentions to build up an another hyprocratic SEELA PARTY. These men are the virulent parts of heterogenous UPFA. Once I happened to watch a video in which Gommanpila brought arguments to prevaricate his stage drama with GOTA – but the guy is welcome by many – TO THE very same manner Duminda is treated with all belssings today.

    Respected Sir
Where did you go all these days? Its strange that it had taken so many years to understand that the country is run by a Great family of thugs. Didn’t you realize this when you supported this family rule whenever it wanted to hoodwink the people? Dint you the one of many which gave these thugs more than 2/3 majority? and all the crimes associated with it. Now only you have realized the elections are fixed by the horoscope of an individual. Why did you tie the Pirith nool on this fellas hand as he never believed in Dhamma Pada. He believes in only the 2 golden talisman he holds in his hands. He shouldn’t be allowed to worship Buddha while he believes in these 2 things in his hand. Gnasara Over to you. Can you stop this for the sake of Ven. Athuruliye and for the sake of the Buddha Saasana?

This monk became a multimillionaire after selling his duty free vehicle permit which he was entitled to as a Parliamentarian. No one can challenge that fact as it was very much in the news at the time. These monks are religious symbols and thus, mixing religion with politics is a deadly cocktail. Its effects will soon be realized when another (in the form of BBS or its nominees) is due to join the fray. Winning at elections is everything for these monks as its consequences will reverberate down to grass-root levels amongst their followers. Therefore loosing is not an option. This alone is bound to create havoc and create more zealots at the hustings, where the monks will try to woe the public by battling it out amongst themselves, which would be fun to watch, whilst the real politicos will probably play second fiddle.

Ratana thera and his racist group have suddenly woken up because they see the prospect of Rajapaksa losing and thereby they themselves losing all influence when an opposition leader takes over the reins of government. These saffron clad opportunists are no better than the opportunistic Rajapaksas. I would stay away from such devious pseudo people lovers who are constantly looking for an opportunity to benefit themselves. Their electoral support has been negligible in the last few elections and they are obviously panicking and hence their sudden discovery of the Rajapaksa family’s corruption and excesses.

I think this is the only time i have seen the monks do something worth wile.Already more than 350 coffins have arrived from middle east, more than half from saudi. Many countries have stopped sending their people.

The bastard at that office deserves this publicity because he is well and truly bought by the employment agents and that is what the monks were doing bringing it up.In fact he was the one who was doing all the shouting like a rowdy, not the monks who seemed to be behaving in a dignified manner. Why are you calling them rowdies when they are fighting for our poor helpless villagers who are killed and being raped?

Running after the thief is dog’s job and not donkey’s.
Donkey’s are not expected to bark!It is awfully sad
that our people are sent to middle east to return in
coffins about one a day.Srilankans not only work hard
in the ME,some of them steal hard and engage in the
oldest profession there. Many are working for the
low class, less educated Saudis who can hardly pay
their maids. Our govt has taken it very serious and
built another International Airport to deal with
increasing number of coffins and if the family
members want to wait longer then sea freight through
the new Rajapakse sea port will help them!More
arrangements are already operating for quick burial
with a little more out of the pocket, save time
through the Katunayake and Southern Expressways!

The 350 coffins i mentioned are for this year only.Every one has apparently died from ‘heart attacks’.All are in their twenties ar early thirties and are getting heart attacks,a joke indeed.Dilan perera the minister does not look into it at all and does not even give the information out to the public. The 350 deaths have to be got at through other means.Just imagine what those who are still living there are going through daily being used as sex objects. The wives don’t mind because otherwise the man will bring in another wife and she will take a part of their assets. So they look the other way as the man keeps this poor lass and does whatever he pleases with her and many do not get even their wages and are beaten mercilessly by the man if they do not satisfy him and beaten again by the wives if they do not do the housework to their entire satisfaction.A common act done by these crude barbaric women is to pour boiling water on the head.

This type of treatment can be meted out because they know they can get away with it and these srilankans are powerless. They know that the government does not care and only wants the foreign exchange earnings.

A few months back another “turn-coat” came up with twelve (12) demands from the Government threatening to “abandon” the “Regime” if all of those are not granted. Did he get anything? NO. Did he go away? NO. Where can he go? NOWHERE. Now we have this Rev. Ratanasara of JHU, as some say it is “Jathika Hela Karumaya”. Now he talks, with BR & RW sitting in the front row at a media meeting, of changing the Constitution to do away with the “Presidency”. In as much as the Minister Weerasinghe demanded those twelve (1@) demands and still remaining in that camp, this Rev. will also not leave in hurry. The “Party” he represents is already at “war” with this action plan. All our so called “Opposition Leader” and some other prominent Ministers are trailing behind these “Trouble Makers” to gain some insight to assess their own situation of becoming or grabbing power by some means.

All the “Leaders” who rally to make a “Change” has so far “FAILED” or “PURPOSELY AVOIDED” to give the country a “comprehensive change plan” to the people. As I said in my earlier comments, for “GOOD or BAD” only the JVP has given us a “Plan of Action” “IF”(?) they come into power. At least that shows some considered and agreed upon solution offered to the people from that political party. Has any OTHER PARTY or ORGANIZATION at least made an attempt to come up with such a plan to be considered by the people? NO. What do they do? They talk and talk of one subject only : TO DO AWAY WITH THE PRESIDENCY.

This country is faced with a “Himalayan” task of cleaning up a MESS that has gone out of proportion and a virtual “DICTATORSHIP” of a Family has been established. How are these Opposition and other Organizations demanding a change to be brought about and what action plan to be put in place are all still quite “FOREIGN” to us. When are they going to do it? Are they waiting for the date of the NOMINATIONS are called? So far NO ONE excepting JVP has come up with such a comprehensive plan.

I have a question for them (JVP) too. This party has already issued a press statement challenging the “LEGALITY” of a Presidential Election and the Candidacy of the incumbent MR. IF, the Presidential Election is called before the EXPIRY of the “TERM” of six years and the incumbent MR put forward his NOMINATION, will JVP “CONTEST” and “NOMINATE” a candidate and go back on what is stated in that media statement? This party need to answer that?

The alternative should be ,all parties must get together and rotate the presidency and the vice president for the six year term. All racists parties and groups should be barred from contesting any elections. Then and only then will Srilanka be a peaceful country.
After all ,we are all Srilankans,If India can do it why cant we?

    Health,education,employment,transport,social services
    and justice,all neglected and deteriorating.Dying
cancer patients don’t get their medicines from
hospitals for months now!Public transport is harassment
to commuters in many ways now for decades.Schools have
become an agency for teachers to pick up candidates for
private lessons!Aged ones are now a nuisance to their
children rich and poor!Young unemployed are a nuisance
to their elderly parents! And these monks have enough
time only to talk racist issues and the govt
institutions rush to sort them out as if there’s a
Tsunami warning. If a man takes up the yellow robe, then
let him limit himself to the temple and let the general
public see that happen. At least one less problem!

It looks like a joint plot. These people were hellbent on defending MARA/GoTA atrocities at the every corner, at every news outlet. After seeing Champika Ranawaka, who justified the government sponsored Aluthgama attacks in France in such inhumane, horrid unbuddhistic ways, I am skeptical of the honesty coming from part of his coterie, including Rathana Thero. And then Sarath Silva who stopped as CJ MR’s money swnidling Case (Tsumnami Money for people)at the courts and paved way for MR’s election are so unholy union of trio. Ratana Thero applogising for the support of 18th ammendment, and Sarath Silva for not jailing this guys comes on the same stage with a smiling face is a shame. For Sarath Silva it is humorous, that his past sins.
If he is so patriotic, he is not talking about what they do to SF. Few months ago I read else where that MR was so furious about the united opposition and the Sobotha Thero’s movement and he decided as part of him strategy to high-jack the joint oppositions single issue, “Abolish executive presidency” in to amend the constitution and Sarath N Silva was assigned to do the draft Constitution by MR himself. I wouldn’t be surprised if our infamous Wimal Weerawansa starts to go on hunger strike demanding – amendments for the Executive presidency. So when these dishonest trio who are trusted by MR is doing this job I smell a rat. Then Mara’s plan was to accept it at the last moment, pass it with every party’s support.

But if he becomes president, not to sign the gazette announcement that would make it to law , but if someone else wins to tie the hands of him by signing it into a law. The fact they are trying to ram this new amendments in the parliament in such short time, with everyone’s approval is suspicious. People needs to be vigilant, journos should ask for this Ratana Thero to provide them with the draft so that the people of the country can see and debate about pros and cons. We’ll wait and see how this drama unfolds, I am hoping for the sake of people of SL that this will in the end turn out to be an oscar worthy performance by all three and the MARA/Basil/Gota combo.
