Sri Lanka & The Middle-East War

By S. I. Keethaponcalan

Dr. S. I. Keethaponcalan

In relation to the ongoing American-Israeli and Iran war, the best option available for a small and weak state like Sri Lanka is to stay neutral. On 28 February 2026, the United States, in partnership with Israel, bombed Iran, starting a new phase of the Middle East war (Iran War, in short). Two main factors influenced the decision to attack Iran.

First, Israel under Prime Minister Netanyahu targeted Iran for a relatively long time, as Iran and especially its nuclear program were viewed as an existential threat. In the backdrop of many Middle Eastern Islamic states, such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, turning pro-West, Iran remained a formidable threat to Israel. As many military analysts have pointed out, Netanyahu had been trying to get the U.S. to attack Iran, but this approach did not work with previous presidents, including Barack Obama and Joe Biden. President Donald Trump is impressionable, and Netanyahu’s manoeuvring worked on him.

Second, Trump has militaristic tendencies and has been trying to promote a strong man image of himself. Hence, the idea of an attack on Iran was attractive to Trump. The impressive success in Venezuela could have influenced him to believe that Iran job would be easy. It goes without saying that Trump is an overconfident man. Trump also believes that he has more power in his second term as president. What does this mean? In 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that the president enjoys absolute immunity for official actions. Therefore, he is legally fully protected. Moreover, he does not have to face voters again. Therefore, there are no personal political consequences for his decisions. It seems he also overestimated the Iranian domestic resistance to the regime. Therefore, the decision to attack Iran in February 2026 was not cumbersome.

Some commentators in the U.S. link the attack to the Epstein controversy or crisis. The argument is that Trump decided to strike Iran to turn the attention from the loads of Epstein files released by the U.S. State Department under legal compulsion. Trump’s name appears in the files thousands of times. I am not convinced of this argument because Trump’s support among Republicans remains solid, and he has already declared “total exoneration” and moved on.  Therefore, in my view, the decision to attack Iran is hardly connected to the Epstein issue.

Sri Lankan Entanglement

The conventional wisdom is that Sri Lanka is only remotely connected to conflicts in the Middle East. Therefore, few would have expected that Sri Lanka would become part of the Iran War. Sri Lanka was drawn into this global crisis unexpectedly and suddenly. On 4 March, a U.S. submarine torpedoed and sank the Iranian warship, Iris Dena, killing 84 sailors. When attacked, Iris Dena was returning from the International Fleet Review, a multinational naval exercise in Visakhapatnam, India, and was about 20 nautical miles off the coast of Galle, a Southern Sri Lankan town. Sri Lanka rescued 32 sailors from the sinking vessel and celebrated the move as a humanitarian success.

There was also the second ship. The Irins Bushehr was off the Sri Lankan coast at the same time the U.S. sank the Iris Dena. The vessel requested permission to dock in Sri Lankan waters due to engine failure.  It is possible that the ship feared a U.S. attack. Sri Lanka evacuated 208 sailors from the ship and granted permission to dock at Trincomalee port. Sri Lanka justified the decision citing international law. Meanwhile, the U.S. urged Sri Lanka not to allow Iran to use rescued crew members for propaganda against the U.S.

On 21 March, reports indicated that Iran had fired two missiles at the Diego Garcia base. Diego Garcia lies about 1,100 miles southwest of Sri Lanka and hosts a joint United Kingdom–U.S. military base. As such, it could become a target or serve as a launch point for U.S. operations against Iran. If the conflict expands to the Indian Ocean, with Diego Garcia as a focal point, Sri Lanka could be drawn more deeply into the war.

Sri Lanka Neutrality

It was against this backdrop that President Dissanayake proudly declared Sri Lanka’s neutrality in relation to the Iran War. Addressing the parliament on 20 March, Dissanayake declared, “our unwavering stance on this matter (the Iran War) is one of neutrality. We can maintain the dignity of our nation, guarantee justice and achieve international acknowledgement solely by safeguarding our neutrality. Consequently, under no circumstances, no matter the pressures we encounter, will we permit this neutrality to be undermined” (Emphasis mine). He offered an example of how the state policy of neutrality was demonstrated. According to the President, the U.S. has requested permission to land two military aircraft at the Mattala International Airport in the first week of March. Meanwhile, Iran has sought permission to send three of its naval ships to Sri Lanka for strengthening friendship and cooperation. The government had rejected both requests.

In a way, it is not surprising that Sri Lanka decided to stay neutral in a fight between two friends of Sri Lanka. Iran is an important trade partner. Sri Lanka buys oil from Iran while maintaining it as one of the country’s primary markets for tea exports. In 2024, Sri Lanka’s tea exports to Iran were worth about US$62 million. Iran also helps Sri Lanka in other sectors. For example, it assisted the Uma Oya hydropower and irrigation project.

The U.S., on the other hand, is crucial politically, economically and militarily. For example, the U.S. considerably assisted the Sri Lankan government in ending the civil war by militarily defeating the LTTE. It started to build and strengthen the Sri Lankan military, especially after the commencement of the Norway-facilitated peace negotiations in 2002. Former U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Lunstead claimed, “In sum, the US military relations with Sri Lanka increased substantially from a fairly low base after the start of the peace process.” The close military collaboration between Sri Lanka and the U.S. continued even after the end of the civil war. For example, in November 2025, Sri Lanka signed a defence pact (Memorandum of Understanding) formalizing a defence partnership between Sri Lanka’s armed forces and the Montana National Guard. Interestingly, this agreement was signed by the NPP government. Economically, also, the U.S. is crucial, as, for example, about 40 per cent of Sri Lanka’s apparel exports go to the U.S. America is the largest single-country market for Sri Lanka’s garment exports.

Therefore, Sri Lanka has benefited greatly from both the U.S. and Iran. The irony, of course, is that it will help neither party when it matters, that is, the other side of the neutrality coin.

The Risk

Despite the irony, neutrality is a good policy.  Nevertheless, I hope that the government fully understands the risks involved in such a policy in this scenario. In the context of the war on terror, in 2001, George W. Bush famously declared that ‘either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.’ Donald Trump is likely to apply a similarly binary logic more forcefully, potentially retaliating harshly against Sri Lanka for maintaining neutrality.

Retaliation may take different forms. A significant issue is U.S. tariffs on Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is currently negotiating with the Trump administration regarding the U.S. tariffs. It is well known that Trump has weaponized tariffs against various countries. What would happen if Trump substantially increased the tariffs on Sri Lanka? One can only hope that the government is ready for the challenges caused by the current non-aligned policy.  I do not believe that absolute neutrality is feasible in the Trump era. Sri Lanka will require a degree of flexibility. Quiet neutrality—adopting a neutral stance without publicly announcing it—would have given the government space to manoeuvre.

” Sri Lanka & The Middle East War” – This is not a ‘Middle East War’. It is a ‘War’ imposed upon a ‘Free State’ of Iran by two partners from the North and the ‘Midwest’ i.e the USA and Israel. Of course, it got spread into wherever Iran decided that the USA is stationed, and provided logistics to attack. The net result was that conflict had spread its tentacles to all other countries across the globe, economically, politically, and socially. That is how this ‘War’ has to be conceived, and all nations must strategically plan preparations to face its consequences.
This ‘Mayhem’ and the ‘Upheaval’ and torpeadoning the world order was started by none other than the so-called ‘ World’s Mighty Policeman’, Donald Trump, the President of the USA. He started with the declaration of his intent to make Canada, the closest ally for decades, the ’51st State’ and name its PM, the ‘Governor’. Next, it declared its intention to ‘BUY’ Greenland, which Donald Trump termed a ‘Piece of Ice’. Next, Donald Trump showed what he meant by the ‘Acquisition’ of the sovereign country Venezuela. In another move, Trump issued an order to isolate Cuba by threatening the countries that supply it with oil and food with increased tariffs.

Please listen to Marco Rubio and his vision perhaps Trump’s too arguing for reconstruction or the recreation of old Colonialism, including slavery. When he finished telling his fascist ideology the audience clapped. See the audience to whom he was addressing:

Forget free state democracy, Buddhism, Hinduism, ……. Tamil, Sinhala, ….. Liberal Democracy, ….

Warn and prepare the Saffronistas to fight the dooms day.
Saffronistas believe they fought the colonial masters and freed the country.

        NV: Thanks.

This guy’s only target is to be the next ‘Governor’ of Cuba under President Donald Trump. Exiled ‘Cubans’ (Batista remnants) were looking for a ‘Lunatic’ to spearhead their ‘Thirst’ for a ‘Come Back’ to capture power in Cuba. They got the ‘Priced’ gift – Donald Trump.

His speech is not new, in that every ‘Hypocrit’ and ‘Crook’ uses the sharp and lethal tool of ‘Democracy’ to win over the audience.

Iran is not a “free State” it is one of the Islamic Fundamentalist Nation which is ruled by violent Islamic principles where people are not free to give their opinion. Of course, this war of Donald Trump and Israel may have wrong decision without proper planning without the support of neighbouring Canada or European countries. China and Russia are two left countries who do not ruled by any religion like middle east with Islam and Srilanka with buddhism and India with hinduism. Those countries ruled by religion always have problems.

continued II – I have identified ‘ONE’ country, Canada, that faced the ‘Threat’ and ‘Bullying’ from its longest and closest ‘Friend’, the USA, worked in ‘Silence’ to direct a shocking knock on Donald Trump. Canada has set the ‘BAR’ strategically, and that would be a ‘Spring Board’ to all other nations and countries. Watch:

    https://youtu.be/M8-xjxlzwdk?si=l_9ZT8vbWm-LhYjw

This allows all other countries to weigh ‘ Strengths’, ‘Capacities’, to determine the ‘Freedom’ and ‘Sovereignty,’ and face the onslaught of outside interferences that cripples the struggle for survival and prosperity.

As I said many times, this ‘War’ must be the ‘END’ of ‘NOW’ and the ‘BEGINNING ‘ of a ‘NEW’ world.

      Douglas,

Good thing MR eliminated terrorism from Sri Lanka. The USA would find an excuse to intervene.

OC: “Good thing MR eliminated terrorism.” Really?

MR replaced ‘Terrorism” with a different kind. That was “Financial Terrorism” and ruined the country.

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka said it.

Freedom of expression is not a slogan to me; it is shaped by personal history, mental struggle, and lived experience. I have endured difficult periods in my life, including walking away (late 80ties) from my Pera- hostel years under traumatic circumstances and losing friendships (best friends) along the way. Such experiences leave marks that inform how one speaks and thinks. It is easy to project certainty from a distance; it is harder to speak with humility and self-awareness.

      Readers,
By the time MaRa became the country’s leader in 2005, he appeared to be an ordinary person living in an apartment in Colombo, but by the time (January, 2025) he was hanging from the “Medamulana-Window,” he was an untouchable wealthy individual. In a country where auditor generals behave like Amazonian sloths, it is up to you to expose the truth!

The Rajapakshes were not elites, but they appeared to be elite by kicking Wickramasinghes and Bandaranayakas. MaRa’s sons have never worked for a salary. I don’t know if Namal Baby’s law degree is valid or not, but I do have a question concerning Rohitha Rajapakshe and how he became a PhD holder as soon as Gota’s government took office in 2020. There is a lot of information mixed with shady ideas, and professionals continue to keep their mouths shut on such controversial issues.

The term Middle East is very Eurocentric and smacks of European colonialism, especially British and Americal Colonialism. International media in the region still commonly use “Middle East” to refer to Western Asia. While “West Asia” or “Southwest Asia” is increasingly preferred in academic, professional, and some regional circles to reflect accurate geography, “Middle East” remains dominant in colloquial and political discourse. The Middle East was established by British and American strategists in the early 1900s, serving as a Eurocentric reference point rather than a “centred within Asia” label. As they wanted to largely isolate this part of Asia from the rest, as if it were some sort of different continent and region, as they were eyeing its huge oil resources, as well as most of the western civilisation, including Christianity and many of the anceint ancestors of modern Europeans, largely arrived from this part of Asia ( Anatolian or ancient European farmers ) Geographical Context: Western Asia/West Asia is arguably more accurate geographically, as it places the area within its actual continental context rather than defined by its distance from Europe.

He he Yes, I am a mutt, but a very good looking mutt, like a designer puppy, that many want, especially the naughty ones, many times lust especially to play, pamper, frolick and be naughty with, if I allow them to, even now at 40 years of age, but not confused or a wannabe. Now, even in India and many other nations, the term Western Asia is being increasingly used; it’s largely in the west the the term Middle East that was coined during the European colonial era, is deliberately being used as it suits their agenda, to isolate this part of Asia from the rest.

Do not be fooled by the online noise — the Rajapakshe brand is being repackaged for public consumption, but history is not so easily rewritten. After being crushed to just three seats in Parliament following the July 2022 uprising, they are back, not with new ideas, but with gaslighting avatars (Lester, The Truth, Deepthi – 3/multi in one) and talking points designed to make you forget the chaos they caused.

Wearing a Rajapakshe badge or parroting their slogans isn’t harmless nostalgia — it’s waving a red flag at the nation, tempting disaster all over again. Meanwhile, the current government struggles, yes, but the real danger is giving power back to a family whose only agenda has ever been personal gain. Philosophical chatter or clever rhetoric on forums cannot shield us from repeating the mistakes that nearly broke the country.

Wake up: Sri Lanka cannot afford to be manipulated by dynastic ambition dressed up as leadership.

      God/all power bless SRILAKNA !

While the EU and most Arab nations criticize the Iranians for retaliating to a war they did NOT start.
It is so obvious that NONE of these countries are condemning those who really started this, while Iran was in the middle of negotiating with American officials (two real estate developers who are clueless about diplomacy, and no idea about nuclear weaponry – Kushner and Witkoff). Iran did warn everyone they will target American bases and interests in the region, so no one should be surprised. The Arab nations that are now outraged, should have warned their buddies Trump and BB to NOT attack Iran and start the chaos and violence we now see happening in the region. Instead reports say they urged Trump to attack the Shiite nation, and now want the job “finished”. You could say they are getting what they asked for. Sometimes a $400 million airplane, and some billions of dollar for Kushner, have benefits.

It is strange that the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, are not condemning or protesting the ONE neighbor who is presently bombing 5 of their neighbors, bombing bridges, annexing lands pretending it is a “buffer zone”, starving civilians who have nothing to do with any war, allowing their settler terrorists to attack, destroy, burn and displace thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank, and who has killed 70,000 of their own people.
Iran has done NONE of the above, so why the discrepancy?

Arising from this ‘Middle East” crisis, there has arisen a huge and concerted campaign by the Opposition and allied forces to attack the present Government with a view to disrupting the efforts made to ease, at least to some extent, the difficulties of the people. Watch how those forces are in action to dope the minds of the innocent people.
