Sri Lanka Will Continue To Pay A Hefty Price Unless It Ends Its Irrational Intransigence: GTF

It is ten years since the civil war ended in Sri Lanka. The final phase of the war is one of the most brutal in recent history and mass atrocity crimes were systematically committed against the Tamil people. The shelling of civilian areas and hospitals, and the blockade of essential goods including food and medicine, killed an estimated 40,000 to 70,000 Tamil civilians in the final months. And thousands of civilians and combatants disappeared as they surrendered to the Sri Lankan armed forces, even days after the end of war.

Memorialization ritual performed by mothers of disappeared

During the thirty-year armed conflict, among the nearly 4 million Tamils some 200,000 died violently, around 60,000 remain missing, an estimated 90,000 widowed and more than 8,000 children orphaned; more than a million left the country; up to a million were internally displaced; and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of property destroyed. The legacies of the war are many – complete destruction of infrastructure, long-term impact to education and health, separation of families across oceans and continents, and non-existence of employment and economic development in the North-East, not to mention the pain and suffering still endured by the victims and their families, especially those searching for answers on the fate of their disappeared relatives.

The armed rebellion itself was an outcome of systematic discrimination, marginalization and violence the Tamil community was subjected to since independence from the British in 1948. The denial of Tamils aspiration for equality with constitutionally recognized self-governance in their traditional homeland, and the resultant fear of losing their just rights and ethnic identity in the country were the root causes of the 70-year-old political conflict.

Lasting peace and reconciliation for all peoples of Sri Lanka, and achievement of their full human and economic potential, will only be possible when the root causes of the war and its tragic after-effects are wholly and candidly addressed.

Opportunity squandered

The end of the war in May 2009 provided a unique opportunity to do so, however, to date the country has very much squandered it. For the first five years, the all-conquering government was opportunistic in its authoritarian consolidation of power, further weakening the Tamil community with no regards for their trauma or human rights. The next five years of the ‘coalition government’ although lessened the fear of the citizens and partially delivered on strengthening key institutions, it too majorly failed in addressing the fundamental grievances of the Tamil community and the much anticipated Constitutional Reform.

It is an indisputable fact that ten years after the end of war, transitional justice remains highly politicized with little or no impact on victims and their families. Not a single family affected by enforced disappearance has ascertained the truth or received justice, let alone reparation. On asserting criminal culpability, no court has been set-up, no indictment served, and no one brought to justice. And those credibly accused of being responsible for the dastardly crimes remain free – some continue to occupy high government positions, while some others with ambition for higher offices.

The attempt at drafting a new constitution that will secure the consent of the Tamil people, on matters of regional power-sharing, has become hostage to the Sinhala nationalistic politics and practically stalled. In educational achievements and economic development, the once successful Northern and Eastern Provinces now appear to have sunk to unacceptably low levels.

Regardless of these political and economic debacles, the legacy of the decades-long armed conflict for justice, equality and self-determination remains deeply entrenched in the Tamil community. The resolve for asserting their political rights and re-establishing the community’s pride of place in the country through political representations, as well as the continuous agitations for land release and information on the fate of the disappeared is quite inspirational. The internationalization of the Tamil Struggle for justice and the notable role Tamil Diaspora play in this respect are two important upshots of the long, drawn-out conflict.

Irrational intransigence

An undeniable truth of the post-war Sri Lanka is its inability to embrace real change. The fundamental building blocks for transformation, viz., open and transparent national dialogue on accountability and truth seeking, ending of impunity, and legitimizing Tamil political aspirations by way of an inclusive constitutional framework have been completely lacking. Besides, there was never a strong national leadership from any of the major political parties advocating for such fundamentals of peace and reconciliation.

Essentially this reflects the inability of the Sinhala-Buddhist majoritarian nationalists to come to terms with the idea of a truly pluralist state that recognizes equality and political power-sharing with other ethnicities. Such irrational intransigence on the part of the majority community and their politico-religious leadership had remained the foremost impediment to the minority communities being accepted as equals into the fold.

Moreover, the recent Easter Sunday attacks, though complex and multi-faceted in its origins and impact, undoubtedly shows that a society where segments of population remain marginalized, rejected and disempowered is a fertile ground for extremist elements to exploit. And the need for transformative change in Sri Lanka is now more urgent than ever.

Role of the international community

The geopolitics of the region and the international community’s interest in preventing the recurrence of deadly conflicts have ensured Sri Lanka remained firmly on the international agenda. The initiatives at the UNHRC, and the multilateral diplomatic pressure and economic assistance provided by several countries to make Sri Lanka adhere to the international norms are of great significance. The targeted assistance provided by a few countries to the most affected regions are also noteworthy.

However, Sri Lanka has repudiated its commitments to the international community through half-truths and half-measures without suffering any real consequences. The key countries’ unreadiness to take the next logical step such as exercising universal jurisdiction, enforcing country specific Magnitsky laws, adopting alternate UN processes or withdrawing trade concessions, which could directly impact the country and the individuals who are implicated in past atrocities, is of grave disappointment to say the least.

Sri Lankan leaders and its people who ultimately decide the future of the country need to be cognizant of the fact that their irrational intransigence to inclusiveness and meaningful socio-political change will continue to cost the Sri Lankan society hugely – a point emphasized by the international community as well.

Our commitment

While remembering those who perished and suffered in innumerable ways during the decades-long struggle for equality and justice, we solemnly commit to continue to do all that is possible, however long it takes, to ensure that the Tamil people in Sri Lanka will one day constitute a confident and empowered community that will have opportunities to lead a peaceful, prosperous and fulfilling life. Hoooooooooo Look at the first para. The terrorists are talking about themselves!!!
The human shield Prabhakaran planned to blast should be comprised of about 40,000 to 70,000.
Thanks to Sri Lanka Army his plan went awry and the lives were saved.

“When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.” – Socrates.
        …………………………………………
Sri Lanka should RESUME celebrating Victory Day under a new President.
What’s wrong with celebrating the Day we regained Right to Life?
No other country in the world could eliminate terrorism. We are the first. We are the only.
I love to see the Military Parade which gives us a sense of pride.
We could have eliminated LTTE terrorism long time ago, had there been a strong leadership like Mahinda Rajapaksa’s.
        Victory Parade should be resumed!
Our Army paid a heavy price to eradicate LTTE.
Around 28,708 servicemen were sacrificed their lives while 40,107 were wounded.
There is no way we should let anyone forget THAT.
We must demand the Western World to STOP fostering and funding terrorist organizations.
With limited resources, if Sri Lanka could perish the world’s most ruthless terrorist organization at the time, which even had land, air and naval power, why can’t other countries with enormous military power can get together and see to the end of terrorism in the world?
In order to save civilian lives, Sri lanka Army used “Foot Soldiers” instead of heavy weapons in the last phase of war against LTTE terrorists.
That is the reason, about 29,000 soldiers were disabled during the last phase of war, itself.
It was the sheer determination and the love of country that made our boys to penetrate enemy territory, knowing fully well that the ground was full of landmines and the enemy had sophisticated weapons, heavy weapons and suicide cadre.
In addition to resuming Victory Parade, one more thing should be done on May 18, next year. Something different.
This day should be solely dedicated to the disabled soldiers and the families of deceased servicemen.

Champa you refer to Muslim terrorists and tamil terrorists.

How come you don’t refer to sinhala terrorists?

As a sinhalelse let me tell you they all had grievances and resorting to terror was the last available option.

Champa, if you define terrorism, worst terrorists are the agents of Srilanka government. They have committed more murders and atrocities than any of the other terrorist organisation. There is no Tamil terrorism after may 2019, but State terrorism on Tamils by Sinhalese terrorists is going on unabated. Now Muslim terrorism has openly come out. Formation of Muslim home guards in 1985, was the origin of Muslim terrorism. Some of these home guards decamped with their guns after a few years, and after war ended weapons issued to them were not taken back. During Mahinda’s regime defense ministry funded Muslim terrorists like NTJ to harass Tamils and Buddhist terrorists like BBS to attack Muslims. Though present government did not fund Muslim terrorism, they turned a blind eye on the atrocities, even after several complaints were made as the victims were Tamils and the government wanted Tamils to be suppressed. Now when it has affected Sinhalese they are acting on it. Top politicians in both government and opposition knew about the impending attack, but chose not to do anything because it was told to them that bombing and killing will be confined to churches and tourist resorts in eastern province. But Muslim terrorists had other ideas and brought the carnage to Colombo. (Contd)

                • 5
                  3

(Contd) Sinhala terrorism began way back in 1956, when Tamil satyagrahis were assaulted in Galle Face followed by a mini riot in Colombo Pettah and Amparai town area where ethnic cleansing of Tamils took place. Since then several acts of Sinhala terrorism on Tamils were unleashed condoned by the state culminating in the 1983 pogrom, which was organised and executed by the government. Since 1983 security forces had been carrying out terrorism on Tamils such as indiscriminate bombing and shelling, arbitrarily firing into crowd, arresting Tamils and executing them in public, arresting Tamils killing them and burying in mass graves and willful destruction of property of Tamils. Sinhala terrorism did not spare even Tamil Nadu fishermen, killing over 500 of them. These are all recorded and published and only a bigot like you would deny. So far none of the Sinhala terrorists have been brought to justice. Do you know that top Sinhala politicians in both government and opposition have received money from Muslim politicians and businessmen connected with Muslim terrorists, who say that only a few misguided Muslims have committed it and want it swept under the carpet. Now Tamils are being subjected to terrorism from both Sinhalese state players as well as Muslim organisations.

                  Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam
I stand by what I said.
Terrorism means a systematic use of terror by killing innocent civilians to create a fear psychosis amongst the population to achieve something unlawful.
There were no Sinhala terrorists or State terrorists.
Sinhalese have never blown themselves like Tamil and Muslim terrorists killing a large number of innocent civilians for no reason.

                    1

Champa, you cannot stand to reason because of your bigoted racist mind. In 1958 after letting loose the riots, SWRD said that this was because of demand for rights by Tamils. Is this not a systematic use of terror by killing innocent civilians to create a fear psychosis among Tamils to drop their demands. In 1977 after successful referendum for self determination, riots was let loose on Tamils, and in the aftermath JR said “If you want war let us have war and if you have peace let us have peace”. Is this not a systematic use of terror by killing innocent civilians to create a fear psychosis among Tamils to make them drop their demands. In 1983 after organizing and actively executing the riots on Tamils, JR and some of his cabinet ministers justified the attacks. Is this not a systematic use of terror by killing innocent civilians to create fear psychosis among Tamils to make them drop their demands. Sinhalese need not blow themselves up to kill large number of Tamils. They can just take a gun and fire into a crowd or drop a bomb from above into buildings killing a large number of Tamils and get away unscathed. This is exactly what the armed forces were doing, and are these not deliberate murders. In Kumudini boat murder 36 Tamils were killed by the navy. In Valvettithurai community center 40 Tamils were killed by the army. In bombing of navali church and Chencholai orphanage several people were killed. Are these not acts systematic use of of terror on innocent Tamils to cow down them.

Tamil change the stories time to time, it depends what they are told to tell the world; When western countries have had bad time, or mostly their interest is not addressed by Sri lanka, Western countries issue a threat to Sri lanka through Tamil. This will continues until Sri lankan make a move legally challenge Western countries regarding Sri lanka.

And good part of such a move will help Sri lanka finally have a government independent from foreign intervention.. As I said before, without inquiry or a court hearing in US and Europe, It will not go away.
This is best solution to not only last week bombing, but for all bombing for last 30 years .

Since these Champas had strong backbones to stay straight and confront terrorists and their supporter’s false propaganda still we have a country to say SriLanka – many Champas who gave their lives in the war front will never be forgotten – Unfortunately pig headed political leaders we have selected to govern us are just doing the opposite – Phoo !! Phoo!! small brain keyboard heroes of CT who were dead scared to move freely on countries roads, before the complete elimination of LTTE goons are now trying to be papadum heroes –

One more thing – keyboard hero said 40 to 70 thousand perish during last stages of war – I just want ask them – Did they had operative on the battle field to count each and every innocent Tamil dead and report back on hourly basis – Please contact Loard Nesby – he knows better – he was referring the verified reports from UN sources – many of these innocent tamils in his records perished because LTTE goons used them as cannon fodder

What is the different between those men instigated by Rajaaksahes attacking muslims srilankens and those nothern terrorists ?
      .
I see the difference is … those who fulfill it for Rajakashes racists are the sinhalese, even so called sinhala buddhists, while those heard from NOthern areas are tamils… that have been suppressed for decades. Even today, SOME video brought that some people are not provided with the basics (proper shelters in nothern areas). They are entitled to have them as SRILANKENS as you guys coming from SOUTHERN or other areas right ?

Rajapaksas attacking Muslims? It is Muslims mostly, who destroyed their own properties under the guise of race riots and the others were government goons plus another group.
Sinhalese were suppressed for decades in Northern and Eastern Provinces. It has to be rectified.
If there is no proper shelters in Northern area, it is entirely the failure of your own Tamil politicians. How many TNA MPs do you have? 16!!!! How many UNP Tamil MPs/Ministers/Deputy Ministers do you have?

      Champa (May 18, 2019):

Sri Lanka’s military strategy was incredibly stupid; that’s why people ended up as human shields.
Sri Lanka’s defence had no strategy other than to use up all the forces and all the foreign donated military equipment to kill everyone one in sight until they had destroyed LTTE. Keep in mind the limited size of the geography of the region.

A successful war strategy does not result in deaths of tens of thousands of civilians while LTTE itself was reportedly under 10,000 in number.

What about father Francis. What offence did he commit to be murdered other than to accompany those surrendering. He was killed because he would have been a credible witness acceptable to the international community on war crimes.

They had several months to surrender. As soon as SLA captured the East, everyone knew the war will be over. LTTE chose to fight, why show them mercy at the last moment?

I was born as a Sinhalese before I became a Sri Lankan.
              I am a Sinhalese Buddhist.
              That is my identity.
My race has a glorious, phenomenal history.
My culture has distinctive features and values.
My religion has a Unique Teacher.
There is no way I change my identity to a Sri Lankan and become a nobody.
You can be a Sri Lankan. I have no objection.
Every Sri Lankan has no equal rights. The majority rights are suppressed in Sri Lanka.
Sinhalese are suppressed in North and East while Tamils and Muslims are not suppressed anywhere in the country.
Sinhalese have no equal right to live in North and East.
Sinhalese have no freedom to erect Buddha statues in North.
Sinhalese Policemen have no freedom to speak in Sinhala in North. Hoole blasted a Policeman for speaking in Sinhala.
Muslims can install Mosques anywhere in no time. There is no limit. 300 new Mosques have been built within 3 years, as the Muslim, Muslim Minister says. But Buddhists have to get prior approval from the government to even conduct a Dhamma School in a temple.
Buddhists have no freedom to engage in meritorious deeds as and when they want. If they want to offer food to others by way of a Dansala, they have to register with the government in advance. Even on the Vesak Day, I can’t have meritorious thoughts, as I need prior approval from the government. No other religion is restricted like this.
Even the law is not equal. It is bias towards minority terrorists. Two LTTE Air Tigers who killed 14 and destroyed 10 aircraft in the Anuradhapura Air Force Base received only 5-year jail term while a soldier who killed one sergeant for not granting leave received death sentence, from the same judge.

Some reasons being lack of alms being received by monks regularly and the unavailability of water and sanitation facilities, 17 Buddhist Temples in the Anuradhapura District and 14 temples in the Moneragala District are a few among them. Loss of trillions of Rupees, human life, living without peace, lifetime full of misery, begging and begging as if it is a profession, all because of Sinhala Buddhist chauvinism. Inherited ancient civilization has not taught how well people can live peacefully, if politics is made secular. Destroying properties of minority only strengthens the minority. The majority are begging on the streets and buses. Think for once and give up chauvinism. Only way to conquer peace is by empathy and love.

The many years long slaughter is done and finished – not mentioning those of 1971 and of 1988/89.
Let us forget the past, which cannot be erased.
Now it is time for us to move on, to elect leaders who will deliver justice to all citizens of all races, abolish corruption & legally punish those earlier guilty of it, and start with a clean slate – for the future of our children, of all of us belonging to different racial & religious groups.

For this to happen we have to elect leaders who have a clean past – in politics, governance & society. Throw the old ones into the dustbin of history.
But, will such citizens contest elections?

“During the thirty-year armed conflict, among the nearly 4 million Tamils some 200,000 died violently, around 60,000 remain missing, an estimated 90,000 widowed and more than 8,000 children orphaned; more than a million left the country; up to a million were internally displaced; and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of property destroyed.”

Whose fault and who should be blamed?
In 1983, JRJ has told ‘If Demalu want peace, I will give them peace. If Demalu want war I will give them war”. Demalu decided to go for war with the Sri Lankan Government. So Demalu should take the responsibility for its consequences.
Prabhakaran was given several chances to come to a political settlement, short of a separate State but that dumbo rejected those offers and continued to fight to get his dreamland ‘Thamil Eelam’ in Sri Lanka. So do not come out with this bloody nonsense to blame Sri Lankan Government, Sri Lankan Armed Forces or Sinhalayo for the stupidity of your Sun God.

28 years of imprisonment for Nelson Mandela. A British qualified lawyer spent his life as half nude Packiri, with Indian peasants. Lincoln threw his life in line. But they all yielded a fruit for loses their suffering. They were the winner. Liberty, Fraternity, Freedom was their achievement. But more than 200,000 Tamils and leader Pirapaharan and many others entire family has been sacrificed in liberating Ceylon Tamils, but no avail. Losses are not unusual. But the emptiness in Tamils life in the past 10 years is regrettable achievement.
For this failure, it is not very efficient Sinhala leaders diplomatic maneuvering, but the local politicians like TNA, TPNF and diasporas like GTF, TGTE……TNA and TPNF are in full swing in nasty politics of to have settled who is going to be the ruling party and the who is the opposition party for the mirage Tamil Eelam. It has now become to light that none of those eels have any heart to serve Tamil, but only to their Sinhala Masters. The same situation exists with GTF, TGTE like organization. Their leaders dream is when they can walk in to the Tamil Eelam and claim political share. Their leaders’ hope is having the ministers approved their return to Lankawe and restart their politics wherever they stopped before the war before they ran out of the country. There was never any guidance delivered by these local groups or Diaspora groups to the Eelamist where to start when the war ended and how proceed on diplomatic path. This is quite contrary to SJV, Leader Pirapaharan, or Gandhi or Nelson. All these groups are purposely staying out of educating their activist. They openly talk about that educating can turn against their wellbeing. Very few of the activist of any of these groups would be able to spell out what is the plan for to tomorrow by their leaders. Basically no one in Tamils are able to understand where is the International Investigation is at this time.

    2

For 70 years of local struggle, nothing was achieved. There is only one and only one way left, if Tamils wants to regain their rights back in Ceylon. That is the International Investigation of the Genocide. Unless IC accepts of what happened to Tamils in Ceylon, there no redemption to Tamils. It is so unbelievable to notice that some Tamil political parties in contact with Chinese agents in secret while preaching about winning Tamil Eelam. It is only China and its colleagues undertook the contract from Yahapalanaya Aanduwa, to block any progress in UNHRC or UN against Tamils.
If GTF is willing know something of winning freedom, shedding few drops of tears on anniversaries is not a strategy to win the Tamils rights. While protecting Ranil on his PM seat and chest beating time to time would only further deteriorate Tamils situation. Ranil is a person openly worked with ISIS to convince the IC that dealing Tamils problem though UNHRC can be dangerous & disastrous. Ranil is the one defeated Chandrika when she wanted to sign with ICC. Ranil is the person went to Temple Tree House and promised to Old King of full protection for his family from international investigation. Ranil and Mangala are the people protected Old Royals family on their theft of $18B. The criminal law is, if you accept any theft property from a criminal then that is also crime. Sampanthar, Father Emmanuel’s and others friendship with Ranil itself is crime.
GTF is pretending here as it had got the bliss on the 10th anniversary of Mullivaaikkaal mayhem. This bliss is also will go gloomy unless the Tamil leaders join together and educate Tamils on Diplomatic agitation, take them on the path of International investigation and establish to the world the criminal, Genocidal intention of the Sinhala Politicians when they killed Tamils. Otherwise, there are all chances the international governments believe Lankawe and support it on its all efforts.
RIP for those sacrificed their life on the dream of Tamil Eelam.

‘Koti Diaspora’ and several NGOs have requested UN to send soldiers to Sri Lanka saying that minorities are not safe.

I wonder whether there is a connection between these organizations and anti-Muslim riots occurred 21 days after the terrorist attack. Plan A, an immediate backlash against Muslims did not take place thanks to Catholic and Buddhist religious leaders. May be they thought let us go for Plan B and attack few shops to tell the world that Sinhala Buddhists are massacring Muslims and intervention is necessary under R2P which will enable the Government to postpone elections indefinitely.

There was no excuse to spend money on defense spending and loads of commission on arms purchases.
They had to come up with innovative ideas, for instance build the same bridge several times, repair newly built power station several times costing millions of dollars, harbour several times, ……

LTTE could have come out with white flags and surrendered, without putting the lives of thousands of civilians in danger. They hid behind civilians to delay the advance of the SLA. They thought they could create some kind of humanitarian crisis so that the IC puts pressure on SLG for a ceasefire. Mahinda called LTTE’s bluff very well. You don’t stop when you have a military advantage.

This article is a one sided story. It does not talk about the number of innocent sinhalese killed over countless bombings that happened in the middle of the major cities. It does not talk about the fear we sinhalese people experienced. There was a period that the mother and father used to go in separate transport so that there will be at least 1 parent remaining if the other died. It does not talk about the fear our parents had when sending us to schools, or when we had to take public transport.

I know the minorities are thinking that they are disadvantaged, but that is because they are the minority. But lets face the truth. I don’t see any ordinary person in Sri Lanka regardless of their race or religion get a fair share of law and order or consideration when it comes to day to day living. It is the politicians and their henchmen who are advantaged, and that is politicians of all races and religions. The law and order applies very well to the innocent while the politicians and their henchmen go scot free.

I’m a sinhalese buddhist, coming from Sinhalese buddhist parents and married to a sinhalese buddhist. I have friends from all races and religions and we continue our friendship the same way. However, I dont live in Sri Lanka anymore just like a lot of other people who left the country, mainly due to the situation in the country as a result of the politicians. Had we sinhalese buddhist got a fair share of everything or an advantage, I would be in Sri Lanka right now, instead of writing this.

Forget about foolish dreams like Eelam. Wake up to reality. This is a quote from the US Marines website.
Sri Lanka represents a “gap” in security cooperation, in the most positive sense. It is providing us an “open door” to amphibious force development in the Indian Ocean. The Sri Lanka Navy has just formed a Marine Corps, and it wants our help with doctrine and training. Its Sailors and Marines are professional, battle-hardened, and want to emulate the U.S. Marine Corps. U.S. Sea Services also can learn from the Sri Lankans, especially from their experience in opposed, amphibious landings against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Developing this relationship represents a win-win for both the United States and Sri Lanka and provides Marine expeditionary units and amphibious ready groups (MEUs/ARGs) access and training areas in Trincomalee, the “finest natural harbor in the Indian Ocean.”

You see? The world is not interested in Tamil claims or even Tamil lives. It is realpolitik that matters.

Taraki believes in order to undermine Tamils/Minorities Sinhalese should be ready and willing to provide all kind of services to the powers that are supposed to help this island by stationing their troops which normally look for comfort.
