What do Sri Lankans want? What are their aspirations? What is the capacity they possess to understand how they may realise their wishes and aspirations? Therein lies the sixty four million dollar question. Sri Lankans want all options open, at all times. It is with profound sadness I pen these lines.
Read a newspaper, watch news on television it becomes clear that Sri Lanka is floundering. All news and views are nothing but centred around the Central bank bond scam. The perpetrators and the politicians who benefited from the scam must be brought to book. Nevertheless, sections of the media (a large segment in fact) treat this scam akin to a dog with a bone. Social media too is equally guilty. Any debate descends to Rajapaksa vs Wickremesinghe or UNP vs Rajapaksas. Sinhala Buddhists vs Tamils and Muslims. That is the sum total of our capacity.
I read carefully and watch news of Cabinet decisions. There is plenty going on to develop the country. Clean water, Improvements to roads, improvements in Health care, structural changes to boost government revenue through better tax collections, freedom of expression and many more. The government does not know how to get their message across. There is no participation nor interest by the people or the media in any of these proposals. They get activated only when the spoils attached to such come in to question. Very often the whistle is blown by a business house that lost a tender even though they too were willing to part with bribes to politicians and government servants that matter to secure a win.
The current hot topic is whether Gotabaya Rajapaksa could run for President at the next election. Are we naive, foolish, suffering from amnesia or all of it? Have we forgotten the dictatorial and murderous record of the Mahinda Rajapaksa reign or do we remember only the roads that were paved by him?
To make it simple I would suggest that the people and the media collectively grab a long sheet of paper and draw a diagonal line in the middle. Now, on the left side start by recording all the ill deeds of the Rajapaksa regime such as, Helping Hambantota, Sri Lankan Airlines, Mihin Air, Sachin Vaas Goonewardene’s looting, Basil’s Maga Neguma and 10%, Daisy Aunties Gems, First lady’s Siriliya and ID card, Mattala, Hambantota Port and Airport, Sale of Army Headquarters to Shangri-La, Port City, hedging deal of CPC, Investing in dud Greek bonds,Mig deal of Gotabaya, Udayanga Weeratunge, Jaliya Wickramasuriya, Pumping and dumping of shares in the stock market, Namal and his brothers antics and amassing of untold wealth, lamborghini and Ferrari purchases, fake attempt at bidding for Commonwealth games, killings at Rathupaswela, Aluthgama,. Murders of Lasantha Wickrematunge, Thajudeen, abduction and disappearance of Ekneligoda, torture and abduction of Keith Noyahr, assault on Poddala Jayantha, assault on Upali Tennekoon,embracing Karuna, Pillaiyan and KP, Wimal Weerawansas, Mahindananda’s antics. These are but a few though the list is endless.
Now record on the right side column the ill deeds of the current mob. Bond scam, Arjun Mahendren, Arjun Aloysius, Ravi Karunanayake,Sujeewa Senesinghe, Dayasiri Jayasekera, Bond scam, Bond scam…….Bond scam……………….
This is not to deflect from the corruption of the present government. It must not be condoned. But as a nation are we so bereft of leadership to go back to the same vomit? Why rely on the USA to disqualify Gotabaya when the many criminal cases including murder can be brought about and the truth laid bare. Most of the aforementioned criminal activities were executed under Mahinda Rajapaksa’s watch. A majority of the people yet believe that Mahinda is the best brand in Sri Lanka.
No. Sri Lankans do not have the capacity to understand what is good for them nor their next generation.

Exactly right! Sri lankans may be literate , but it is clear that most of them can’t count, though many in this forum comment on the “scam”.
This alleged scam costs each citizen Rs.48 p.a. for the sake of argument, but not really, because this is a loan, not a write-off.
To put things in perspective,Sri Lankan Airlines costs us Rs.700 each. Hambantota port costs each citizen 1800+.
So why is nobody talking about these things.?
Probably because Sri Lankans cannot think independently. They have to be told what to think by the likes of Sirasa and the “pundits ” who perform for Killi Maharajah.

Sri Lankan’s are lethargic and indisciplined . We are not a result oriented culture. We are koheda yanne malle pol culture. The reason that sports are part of schooling system is to train the youth to make split second choices that lead to success. Of course most our are politicians and civil servants have never played a sport. Hence do no understand the concept of Victory and Defeat and are unable provide posotive leadership ( viz Ranil, Sirisena, Mangala )
This can be easily rectified by making a compulsory military service of about 3-9 Months. Three being the least and nine being the maximum. This happens in countries like Russia, Egypt, Iserial and South Korea. And it was common in Western countries till after the world War. In ancient times there were rituals that made boys into men. The modern compulsory military service is the modern version. The individual can choose the time of service between the ages of 18-28. This will not only discipline our lazy Sri Lankan men , but also instill the concept of serving the motherland for groups like Muslims and Colombo 7 types.
There was an article in CT about how low are productivity levels are. In the last 15 years Thailand has added over 200 new products in its export roster. While SL has added something like 6 or 7. This is the level of our creativity and innovation.

All students who studied science subjects in the early days (until some idiot changed the GCE (O) levels to GCSEs’) had to pick one art subject from Geography, Civics or Art and Buddhism & History were compulsory. Could you please tell me honestly, how much our Buddhist public have strayed away from our Buddhist 8 fold path with regards to their daily lives, in your honest opinion?
8 fold path defines and guides the life and conduct of a buddhist morally. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand that. We are all taught these basic precepts when we are growing up. It should be the basis of our rationality.
Don’t just blame the education system, we have to mend the entire moral fabric of our society, the moral fabric was completely destroyed by Mara and his goons. They perverted the huanity we Sinhalese had by various dirty means. They institutionalized corruption openly. They compromised the little decency what was left remaining after a 30 year war.
They continue to run their propaganda machine in full swing. The present government is not counter attacking to subdue these negative ideas and attitudes being perpetrated. Peoples stupidity doesn’t help. Too bad for a country with a so called 2,500 year civilization.

As I had mentioned else where Lankans have this extraordinary ability to see any issues in party/religion/language lines. What ever may be the issues whether economics,corruption,debt employment,development or infrastructure it all boils down to above said lines. When will be the time where people are willing to get out of this cocoon nest and are able to think and live in reality. Every country has had its moment of a turning point in their political history in which countries like South Africa, Germany (post unification) and eastern block of Europe (post cold war) has managed to turn the corner. Sadly in Lanka the opportunities were plenty but people are blind and deaf.The expected change never happened and there is no signs of it in future.

Having said so, this Yahapalana Government has come to power on a platform against corruption and did the day light robbery of CBSL within first 50 days of the governance and it has been proved by a Special Presidential Commission appointed by the President of Sri Lanka.
Now, you may say that two have been remanded and asked for the expedition of Arjun Mahendran. But, why no action for Minister in Charge during the day light robbery and the footnote gang involved in that?
Everyday, Yahapalana tries to sell government properties, they are very relaxed on people call for division of the country on racial lines, no action for commemoration of proscribed organisation – LTTE, Cost of living is sky rocketing, no semblance of relief to the ordinary people of Sri Lanka.
Yahapalana have come to power on a platform to get rid of all the wrong doings of the previous regime and therefore, they cannot say we are doing wrongs in lesser extent than the previous regime.
The previous regime whilst fighting the LTTE Terrorist effectively against all odds and against world opinion the nobody can militarily defeat LTTE Terrorists, they gone on a spree of development with a lot of relief measures to the ordinary masses of Sri Lanka as well. This achievement failed by all the previous regimes in Sri Lanka for the last 30 years. Since Mahinda Rajapakse led government achieved this with no uncertain terms, people naturally recognized their Managerial qualities that all the previous governments of Sri Lanka and most notably the present one, which has failed in all fronts hands down.

What you expect from a country where 90% of population are either educated or uneducated lethargic idiots? SL has high literacy rate and lowest IQ, which says our education system is focusing on memorizing the theories and passing the exams, there is no practical aspects involved. On the other hand, I doubt if Sri Lankans are biologically limited too. The reason I am saying this, I have had the opportunity to oversee some software developers from Russian, China, India and Sri Lanka. For efficiency, neatness and power of applying logics, Russian first, then Chinese while SL and Indians can’t come anywhere near. Indians are worse than Sri Lankans but they are hard workers than us.
