Strikes & Protests: Everything, Everywhere, All At Once To Block The IMF

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Not a Strange Host

This country of ours isn’t a strange host for trade union strikes and for mass protests. The last significant trade union action had been in 1952, which succeeded in  bringing down the benevolent Prime Minister of the UNP government, Dudley Senanayake. Dudley is still one of the most beloved of persons to have held that top position, which was then the CEO spot in our island Sri Lanka.

Dudley

Dudley Senanayake had good ideas but a bad reception by stupid people who followed wicked politicians and trade union tailwags. Soon after he fell from his position, “the Prince”- as JR called him – fell from his life.

A very just man who wouldn’t hurt a fly, Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake, successfully planned and executed an import substitution scheme. He grew potatoes and the Leftist Red Shirts coined the slogan, “Dudley ge bade Masaala Wade.” As you could infer from that slogan, racism was taking hold at that time and hundreds of “jaathyalaya” racists were festering in the landscape.

JR in power introduced the UNP affiliated trade unions that manned every public undertaking. It was known as the Jathika Sevake Sangamaya or JSS. Other union types like Bala Tampoe growled at the JSS like Rotweelers but real worker- power gravitated to the JSS.

That was a good tactical move looking at it from the persecutive of stabilising government.

Mahinda Rajapaksa was a different breed. He used counter gangs that marched into strikers and protestors, with cinnamon sticks. Mahinda also wore the patriotic tag and that had been effective defence, then.

The war came in and the trade union focus took a back seat.

Jaathyalaya” invaded the minds of unthinking people – a stock never in short supply in Sri Lanka.

A corruption era was set loose with everyone including politicians, officials, professionals, clergy etc. making hay while the sun shines.

That corruption process eventually evolved into our recent bankruptcy. However, post bankruptcy Lanka could not be the same again. Government MPs had to go hiding to save their lives from the wrath of people who suddenly awoke from their sleep to hear announcements that island paradise was broke. Not a cent for basic necessities-all manner of queues for petrol, for kerosene, for gas, for diesel and so on. Everything, everywhere drying up. Selling points had downed tools and there were reported incidents of persons dying on gas cylinders or of cylinders bursting in homes.

Gota’s Wise Managerial Move

At  this apoplectic moment, departing Gota took the wisest decision he had ever taken in management: To get Ranil Wickremesinghe to take over the job. Previous to Ranil, Gota attempted a faint-hearted offer to the Leader of the Opposition. Sajith was out of depth to develop the courage to take it over. JVP wasn’t attracted by anything but the prospect of negative screaming. Fonseka? Was he jittery? This was not like the war!

To Ranil Wickremesinghe the decision was clear. Ranil has the capacity level, the experience and maturity and international relations to give a go. That self confidence he had. Even in defeated situations there is also an air of public confidence that can emerges from Ranil’s image. It seems clear that Ranil has won Pohottuwa confidence except that of Dullas Alahapperuma.

Ranil Wickremesinghe

Day by day, Ranil is achieving what he had promised. Any second thoughts of voters will veer toward this existential real experience.

Ranil Wickemesinghe is a rare man among our political leaders. He is brilliant. Nobody knows how his mind is moving. He has the toughness of mind and the political sagacity to work in the right direction

True, trade unions and protestors are all over, everyday. But Ranil possesses two keys to unlock their hold: first, managerial capacity. second a rare quality of emotional management. Machiavelli in his classic “Prince” stated that a ruler must have a Lion’s heart and a Foxy cunningness. This man has it.

However, Machiavellian analysis missed something crucial: a leader must have an inspiring vision for great future moves. I regard Ranil Wickremesinghe as a modernizer. Given a free arm this man will take Sri Lanka along progressive social paths. He is geared for system change as no other living political leader is.

The IMF Light

There is a social media post going around -like this:

“They said the IMF will not come

Now they say the IMF has flaws…”

The IMF will come in as the heralding platform for an island people  who don’t deserve the label of a bankrupt state.

Nice poetry Uncle, I hope you are advising the Australians too.

Heard we are going to have a bigger problem ! As we were getting the IMF billions and becoming a rich country, disaster again !

President Biden has summoned Wickramasinghe and His chief staff Ratnayake immediately to Washington to get guidance on the Banking crisis they are facing in the US !

These two have asked to bring their A team- Old Codger ( English aspects and bigotry ) , Leela (European expert and funny ideas) Jayasinghe ( Aussie philosopher lost in the outback ) with their all purpose lackey Native Vedda to make tea and for the occasional hurrah !

      D.S,
Biden has also asked that a trans-person should be in the delegation.
Preferably one with big jugs. I have suggested your name, of course.

I say old codger you have this insulting way of referring to female attributes.

We can understand your anger about females.

Must you follow RW even in these things ?

          D.S,
“you have this insulting way of referring to female attributes.”
Didn’t you say yourself that you were a little boy once, and your parents told you to keep away from gays? So you can hardly be female now.
When you stop insulting people because of their sexual inclinations, I may stop insulting you.
Don’t forget I am better at it than you.

With your kind of background and parental influence insulting must be second nature to you !

Shenali and Gunadasa Amarasekera are the most saddest persons in the entire world.

I can’t comment on her beauty or lack of it. nimal fernando has already accused me of being a male chauvinist pig, not in so many words but called me a misogynist. I believe both are the same.

        Dear old codger,
        .
You have built up such a lot of respect from a guy like me that it won’t be easy for you to forfeit it all; but it does look like happening. I find this comment quite shocking.
        .
I have little idea who “deepthi silva” is; some commenters whom I respect have, in the past been critical of what she’s said. That much I remember. However, with so many anonymous commenters around it is difficult for me to fix a personality to each commenter.
        .
“leelagemalli” I used to respect, but now that it is clear that he has a deep-seated hatred for all brown Lankans, my attitude has changed. nimal fernando I now respect. If people are honest, I can live with their anonymity. “deepthi silva” is now saying the right things. I’m not now going to go searching for all her previous comments to ascertain all her attitudes.

I only give as good as I get.
Just because “deepthi silva” is “now saying the right things.” in your opinion doesn’t change the fact that she is racist and homophobic.

            Dear oc,
            .
There are so many unnecessary things being said on CT, that unless you give me a link to what you say “deepthi silva” has said on other occasions, I cannot comment on what she what said to you. I try to forget personal nastiness; it tends to snowball. If you link me to the article below which the comments by deepthi appear, I will check, and perhaps get back to you.
            .
Whenever something has been said, I think that it is necessary to know the context.
            .
I value comments that appear here for the understanding that they bring about; not for the grief they sometimes engender.

              .
There are too many pseudo interllectuals like Panini in our society. A person affected by chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behaviour. The video below will help you realize the NATURE of SINHALA_MAN. His is pathological no doubt about that.

Exposing someone’s personal information can hurt them or speed up the killing process. This is true. If you look again on the web, you will surely find the numbers.
It is an open secret that we know that the Rajapaksa are born murderers. They have got their henchmen working for crimes similar to Sri Lankan underworld activities.
They are in Rome, Berlin, Frankfurt, London and any capital city in Europe. The Sri Lankan media is still hand in hand with the biased media mafia who have polished their image instead of revealing it.
I have been anti-Rajapaksa for the last two decades. It is obvious to people today that I am right or so.
This moron named sinhla_man never stood up against Rajapaksa crimes but stuck to his own gossip and hate mail.

And everyone survivied in 89 are very clear that JVP are famous champions with extra judicial killing tactics (please look back to 1989-1992). No future JVP-led NPP, but NPP-led JVP; That is what I believe.

Why can’t a former teacher (I don’t know if he is actually one) think twice? Why so many anonymous in CT? The answer is imaginable to sensible people but not to vindictive lowlives.

His toxic behavior is becoming clearer to many today than ever before, how can a decent person relate to such reptiles? He was always talking about others and hero worship as usual (any sane person would see that if the city ever made sense) and boasted about his rich relatives but he himself was very mean. This is the truth. I kindly asked him to use his knowledge to teach UVA-Youth, and the answer was simply precedents. This man or others are doing nothing but spreading hatred in the society. That’s clear.

So what more stories are needed to assess our Sri Lankan society?. The shameless man is now trying to compare me to Hitler, his ferocious attempt to convert me to the murderous JVP ideology has ended up in vain. Although they yearn for genuine democratic systems, sentiments are more prevalent in the South Asian region than anywhere else. In order to eliminate these trends in our society, we need to develop their subtle thinking. Then it will gradually bring us closer to “real changes”.

Sri Lanka Television (three decades ago) aired a Sinhala tele-drama called “Kopi Kade”. A gossipy female character in the sinhala teledrama “Kopikade Dayavati”. .

He repeatedly abused my email address and my kindness to continue his blackmailing. He attacked Hanchopancha because he thought that Panini would not come near him. .
Simon’s “KADAMANDIYA people” are much nicer than the likes of SM. But since this man is a senior citizen of this country, I think he should think twice before leap.

Dan is a genuinely generous person. I certainly didn’t go cadging gifts from him, and he knows it.
            .
He was trying to force things like laptops and tablets on me. I refused all offers.
            .
I may have obliged when he asked for my postal address. When the courier brought me a parcel, what was I to do? And how did you get to know all that? I acknowledged his generosity.
            .
He insults all Lankans all the time; it’s likely that he does so without realising it. I try to give details so that we all understand, without hurling insults.
            .
I intend adding a good deal more on the current NPP; that’ll include acknowledging weaknesses.

However, I’d like to make the point that Dan Silva’s claims from Germany, that Dr Harini Amarasuriya’s is in competition with AKD, is not borne out at all by that she has said just yesterday:
        .
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07U8R8Nl5L4
        .
That it is all in Sinhala is fitting for the country as a whole, where, the truth must be told, more than 60% are monolingual Sinhalese. Like me, Harini is more fluent in English than in Sinhalese, but it is the latter language that must be used by her, since it is the Sinhalese electorate that ultimately decides for the country. Of course, this should not be so! Please search for other statements in English, by the NPP or other Parties.

          Panini Edirisinghe!!!!!!

It’s high time you were banned from CT!
How dare you parade here private/personal info about contributors who write under pseudonyms — as you yourself once did.

In your case I doubt that the revelation of yr real name would be a cause for concern, worry, let alone fear. But not everyone’s life is the same as yours, and adopting a pseudonym by some is for very serious reasons.

I have long regretted allowing my email to be shared with you but I dont think I have shared any confidential matters. And, as you know, I am so fed up with your assailing certain people who participate in CT that I have stopped responding to the harangue you email me. You even accused me on this site of being haughty & some other things because you couldnt persuade me via email to “collaborate” with u in some way.

You seem to be obsessed with finding out personal details of people who contribute on CT. Not only pseudonymous ones but others, too. I know you approached a very old friend of mine, in Australia, for info about me.
            Bloody cheek!

You have been threatening and threatening one pseudonymous contributor for well over a year now. Today you have finally lashed out & done the unforgivable.

Why, why, Why, did CT let you get away with it?
Is it because you are a longtime regular (apparently having little else to fill your aging hours with), who helps to keep the wheels turning?

            Go to HELL, Sinhala Man!
Or is there a special place reserved for you — up THERE — that u can count on wotever you do?

                Dear SJ,
                .
Thanks; you have not excused or white-washed the faults that some see in me.

My appeal to all readers is to look round you and see the sad state of our society, and of out country. There are some who act in such a way as to make matters worse. When I see that happening. I shall continue to warn our society of what is going on behind our backs.
                .
It’s unfortunate that Manel Fonseka comes up with these occasional outbursts, when nothing has been said by me against her. She is a person with the highest standards of integrity, and very sophisticated in her thinking.
                .
However, it is my view that her judgement on certain maters is poor. It is possible that my view is mistaken, but I will continue act as I see best.
                .
The first thing that I did when I saw Manel’s outburst, was to write an email to her; a cordial email.

You’re probably correct, SJ, but does Panini have yr email? Is he in touch with you? Have you shared private/confidential things with him which he now threatens to expose?

I am sure he has many virtues that arent shared by some of the contributors to CT & I respect his adoption of the name ‘Sinhala Man’ while taking positive and principled stands. But there are acceptable ways of challenging annoying viewpoints that may be expressed here without endangering (& I mean that) the subject.

Dear Manel Fonseka. It is high time that CT put in place some corrective action/measures to stop him(the nasty Sinhala_Man) and his attempts to blackmail unassuming innocent contributors to this forum. He approaches hapless individuals as if he is full of sympathy and understanding wanting to know the nitty-gritty of the problem in order to help. Like a snake he turns back on you to blackmail when he finds out that he cannot lead you by the nose to align with his warped thinking by using the information he inveiglingly obtained .

I agree that I shouldn’t be playing with the lives of others. That was not my intention. But having spoken with me in Sinhala, LM had no business to castigate me for not knowing the language. He has done so repeatedly.

Manel, I have immense respect for you; why should you get involved? Well, I can’t prevent you.

LM must be fair in his criticisms of the current JVP. He mustn’t write about a country where he hates almost every inhabitant. There must be some objectivity.

      Simon MahathMaya,

this is why I am in firm belief that NPP ought open their doors wider so that all other thoughts bearers can join hand with them. I think NPPrs are not uncompromising, but JVP.
We should finally lock up medamulana dogs forever as an act of our onw comfort which can then the real catatlyst for the boom in this country.
But it should be done after raising the head from the current “no-go” situation. I am agreeing with NPP if they would be able to hang Rajapakshe and other criminals after their power grab. However there are still enough “buts” in my thoughts.

My Dear LM: Thanks. I appreciate your understanding of NPP even though with “Doubts”. I too had my concerns when NPP was in the formative stages. But, as the process began and developed, I had reasons to TRUST this new outfit NPP. One reason among many others was their identity as the ONLY political party that would bring the “Rajapakse & C0.” and its “Coharts” to “Account” and made “Responsible” for the “LOOT” of our National Wealth thus bringing the country to “Bankruptcy” level. I was more than convinced that none of the UNP; SLPP and SJB would dare do that, but would “PROTECT” and “NAURTURE” that draconian regime of Rajapakses. Am I not correct in that assessment of these three parties?

I am more than convinced that it would be done by NPP backed by JVP.

          Dear Simon,’
          .
          The motivation of Dan Silva,
originally of Galle, is hatred of all brown Sinhalese. When he thought that he had found an exception in me, because I did not approve of the racism directed at Tamils and Muslims, I think that he imagined that he had found a soul-mate in me. He may have been confused by my being steeped in Western culture to an extent unusual for a person in my situation in life.
          .
His hatreds are deep-seated and held with a sincerity of sorts. Remember that Hitler was a vegetarian, and not exactly dissolute. So, in the same way, Dan, isn’t conscious of what he’s doing. However, he is contributing to the ruin of Lanka, but I feel that by now nobody pays heed to him.
          .
I feel sorry for a guy as mixed up as Dan.
          .
When he praises the NPP, it is because he hopes, thereby, to ruin the JVP.

My Dear S-M: I don’t think it is fair to get agitated and exceed our patience in reading through the comments that are made on this page. Take for example: When I make a comment and no sooner it is approved and appeared, there is
ALWAYS a “1” thumb down and I see it all the time. Do I or should I get worried? No, not at all. I move on.

In the same way, I would not expect anyone to pass on personal attacks, but confine to the “Subject” matter and open dialogue in a respectful manner.

Anyway, that is my way. Thanks for your understanding.

              Dear Simon,
you have some thoughts that I don’t respect, however, I do respect you and you respect me a lot. Your point is very valid. Thanks for articulating it here. You have lived in other countries and that may be a reason to show such tolerance.
              .
What if some so-called intellectuals behaved like PUNDITs wondering how to deal with a society full of dissidents?

              1) They should be humble enough to see their failure again to correct it in time.

              2) In Europe, some East Asian countries like South Korea, Japan, their senior citizens go to universities because they strongly believe that they don’t have specific knowledge.

Now we know why our peoples are so behind in our own development in this country. Isn’t it?

If you ask yourself what our retired teachers did in their retirement – you would become surprised, many have killed their time. If they really believe in their contribution to rebuilding society, they can do more.

LM, you have said this: “hang Rajapakshe and other criminals after their power grab”.
        .
May I know if you approve the death sentence? Yes/ No
        .
You have not yet asked me that question, so I will not give you my views on it.
        .
Secondly, don’t you think that there should be some sort of judicial process before you punish people? There has to be proof of guilt. I know that what I have said above sounds pretty weak and abstract. In practice, however, I’ll be very glad to the Rajapaksas punished, but I stop short of advocating it.
        .
There’s something else that I want to tell you. I feel that very few, even of the limited number of persons who look at the valuable articles that appear on CT, read our comments any more. I shall therefore respond to very few of your comments – unless it looks as though they will cause damage if ignored.

“Jayasinghe have you not read about Dudley involvement in the failed military coup in 1960s?”

I heard it was a Christian coup against a Sinhala/Buddhist government.
Are you sure Dudley was a Christian just like S W R D Pandaranayakam?

    • 5

      ds
Oliver G’s involvement was suggested at the time. Dudley S, was rather subdued at the time, after his pandering to SB sentiments failed to deliver in July 1960.
All but one plotter were non-Buddhists, and predominantly Protestant Christians.
That the coup followed the nationalisation of oil companies raised suspicions, but nothing could be proven.

  • 4

Although almost all the plotters were Christian, I think the attempted coup was more of a class thing. Westernised English speaking versus Sinhala Buddhist, rather than Christian v Buddhist.

        2

        SJ,
The Westernised English speakers were mostly Christians anyway. They had most to lose. I think they had already lost their schools.

        • 4
          0

          OC
The ones that objected most to the loss of the schools were the Catholic missionaries.
The take over of schools allowed school managements the option of running the schools as private bodies. A few picked it up.
The take over did not tamper with the religious designation of the school. The Christian elite came mostly from the likes of Royal (already a state school), St Thomas’ and Trinity (both private).
Also the government gave the assurance that the school could reserve a substantial part of the admission to children of their faith, and that is still honoured.
The fear of swabasha I agree was an issue, although it was already in place.
I do not contest the prospect of some anger about the take over, but real reasons are probably more serious.

Trouble is, our Sinhalese are hung-up about caste within their own race, and other races within the island. Each group goes hopping around, hooting over the others, and worrying about things like e.g. coconut-oil vs. gingelly-oil. You see, they are scared if they eat anything different, their genes will change (and chromosomes are very changeable) and they will show up as not Sinhalese. (See that infant left in the train? It was most probably a caste issue). So, they fail to see the bigger picture : That they are being screwed left, right, and center in economic terms by leaders and other wealth amassing elite who use these very concepts for power building. They pay no heed to it, till they are suddenly hit badly in the gut by it. Sinhalese should have been more vigilant about this screwing from the time of Independence. Leftist Red-shirts knew what it was all about, but they were always too small in number and easily tortured and killed off. I bet you, Dudley Senanayake growing potatoes was some kind of corporate venture that local Sinhalese couldn’t afford, and their mouths watered when they smelled the ala-tel-dahala.

No decent leader will protect grand criminals from prosecution. No great leader will summon state officials of “independent” commissions like the elections commission and force them to submit to his will. No great leader will spurn the will of the people. No great leader will prevent the legitimate franchise of the people from being exercised by stalling elections to suit the parasitic co-habiting rascals in parliament who will only vote for themselves. No great leader will offer personal benefits to the parasitic mob in parliament in exchange for enabling his own power, rather than allow the owners of the land to choose leaders and governments of their liking., as is their constitutional right. International relations my foot!
