Taking Responsibility

By Farweez Imamudeen

Farweez Imamudeen

On the 21st of Sunday a few men bearing Muslim names strolled into churches and hotels carrying heavy backpacks. While men, women and children were celebrating the resurrection of the Christ, immersed in prayer and divine contemplation, the suicide bombers shattered their peace and bodies with a savage blast; while unsuspecting guests walked in with their families and friends into the hotel cafeteria for breakfast the suicide bombers served them with a deadly scoop of death. To describe this horrendous act as barbaric is an understatement, for human beings cannot comprehend such acts of insane cruelty. The butchers did all this under the guise of Islam.

The world now asks me to take responsibility as a fellow Muslim for the horrible attacks.

But here’s why I can’t take responsibility as a Muslim.

1. The terrorist follows the religion of terrorism. Thus he belongs to the community of terrorists. If anyone needs to apologize for this inhumane onslaught it is the terrorist.

2. The bloody barbaric assault was not only on my Christian brethren or my other fellow brethren in humanity, but on the whole mankind. Therefore, I shall not indulge the terrorist and exclude myself from humanity and stay beyond the dividing line of race, religion and nationalism, apologizing as an outsider. But I shall stand within the circle of humanity, in solidarity with the victims and their loved ones and grieve, feel and mourn together with them; and I shall fight too, together with them to kill this ruthless monster of terrorism.

3. Radical fundamentalism is not a religion; it is a mindset. A radical fundamentalist views the world through a binary lens where the righteous are they and everyone else is misguided. Radical fundamentalists are intolerant ignoramuses who believe in a pre-defined truth and refuse to question it. As a result they do not believe in democratic means like freedom of thought; freedom of choice; and freedom of expression but oppressive means like imposition, coercion and violence.

I’m neither a terrorist nor a radical fundamentalist; therefore I cannot take responsibility as a Muslim.

Here’s why I take responsibility as a Muslim

1. The terrorist exploits the mass ignorance about Islam and history, and uses populist and simplistic means to persuade the world of his Muslimness. Hence he grows a beard, or adorns a turban, or wears a pathan or jubba suit, or shouts Arabic slogans from the Qur’an like ‘Allahu Akbar’ and ‘Jihad’, or bears an Arabic name, or merely calls himself a Muslim; the world too now calls him a Muslim based on what is visible on the surface. The burden therefore, is on me to unveil the truth hidden beyond the surface.

2. The terrorist claims to follow the teachings of my religion, while blatantly refuting them in practice; but since the world is prone to judge an entire society by the actions of a few individuals the terrorists win the day. But please let me show you what you might not know:

The terrorist attacks and demolishes a church, yet the Qur’an denounces this violence:

“And were it not that God checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of God is much mentioned.” (Sura Hajj – 22: 40)

The terrorist kills more than 300 unarmed and unsuspecting innocent men, women and children, yet the Qur’an calls this a crime against humanity:

“Whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind.” (Sura Maida – 5:32)

“Kill not the life which God hath made sacred, except by legal right” (Sura Al-An’am 6:151)

The terrorist wants to annihilate the disbelievers while the Qur’an lays out the principle of universal brotherhood and human interaction:

“O mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of God, is the best in conduct” (Sura Al-Hujurat- 49:13)

The terrorist resorts to barbarism and violence while the Qur’an promotes freedom of choice:

“There is absolutely no compulsion in religion” (Sura Baqara 2:256)

I believe in love, mercy and compassion; I believe in diversity, equality and humanity; I believe in brotherhood, democracy and freedom; I believe in Islam.

I take responsibility for letting the terrorist twist the truth and delude the world.

But I take responsibility as a human too.

While I was debating about who would win the IPL finals, what would happen in the next Avengers movie, and how fabulous Priyanka Chopra looked in her wedding dress; the terrorist was grooming.

While I was determined to be the first to get my hands on the next i phone, to have a bigger and more glamorous wedding than my friend’s, to spend my next salary on upscaling my expensive car; the terrorist was growing.

While I remained ignorant about what’s happening around me; while I was racing to reach the pinnacle first, intoxicated by the passion for wealth and prestige; while I sat back and relaxed, trusting the white attired men to look after my country; the terrorist destroyed our world.

The author’s photograph and his article are a total mismatch. Is he happy?

Most of them are happy but in fear of reprisal will come here and post they are sad , disgusted and are victims too. If there is no fear of reprisal for their extremism , like in the east that is protected by the Sinhalese state and armed forces too. They are happy , deny that it is happening and will aggressively abuse you , will play victimhood . They can never be trusted. A people who deny their actual origin , heritage, language and culture and claim to be something else, that they really aren’t for perceived political and economic advantage and have been brainwashed to worship this something else and hate their own actual origin , can never be trusted. The silly creature did not have the brain to change is photo but showing his true feelings but posting something else.

        Rohan,
        .
“Most of them are happy” – Any person with an iota of empathetic & sympathetic attitude towards humanity would condemn this attack on innocent lives.
        .
What I see in the case of most of the Tamils here, is that they try to shed crocodile tears on country’s security while trying to fish in the troubled waters to take revenge on entire Muslim community for the feud that Muslims never supported their home-land struggle & stood by the Sinhalese side since independence.
        .
It is the Tamils who mock at or talk negatively whenever SL is in the world news for positive events. I still remember how the Tamils felt jealousy, belittled & made it a joke when SL won a tourist destination award recently.
        .
Be honest, we know how many Tamils are internally delighted and celebrated this attack that made SL look ugly in the world’s eyes, not the Muslims who still work with the govt to crack all those extremist gangs among them. How many Tamils did the same when LTTE massacred thousands of innocents in the name of home-struggle? You, Tamils fought for LTTE, gave your children to fight for LTTE, Offered your women used as bombs for LTTE, at the minimum sent money to support LTTE. Even now, living far away, you fight against govt in whatever way possible to tarnish, degrade, diminish this country.
        .
A Muslim extremist is not born as extremist but converted by the terrorist groups. But in Tamils’ case, your children are born with separatism ideology, then you raise them with that ideology – How many of you people teach to call it “Eelam” and avoid calling “Sri Lanka”?
        .
Now tuck your tails between the legs and just watch the Muslims work with govt to get out of this dirty Islamic extremism.

Yes you will work hard to get rid of Muslim extremists down south, as you are afraid of the Sinhalese state and armed forces and mobs, who have already give a taste of what will happen to you fake Arab low caste converted immigrant backstabbers from South India, however in the Tamil north and east , especially in the east , you will give all the support to the Islamic extremists and Salafists to terrorise the native Eelam Tamil population and steal their lands and create a Wahhabi Caliphate, as a base to steal the rest of the island for Wahhabism. Sillysena has already paved the way for this by appointing a well known Salafist and a Hindu temple land robber as the governor of the east , to teach the Tamils a lesson. Only thing this idiot does not realise , once the eastern Tamils are taught a good lesson his native Polonaruwa will be their next target. You are just a bunch of cunning selfish opportunists, who fawn and say peace to the Sinhalese due to their might and power but show the opposite to the Tamils , as you feel that you can get away with. Now go and hide back into the hole that you dared to venture Salafist.

That is all due to sinhala politicians. They some how wanted to deny tamil home land. Uncles created sinhala colonization in north east which created war for 30 years and ripped the country apart. Now nephews given the power to muslims to suppress Tamils. They are not lions dirty foxes. Fox is not fit be the king and it is curse for the jungle! Muslim should have supported the crushed tamils but not even a single Muslim politician is ready for that. Now the time to learn the lesson!

Rohan, we don’t call ourselves the tigers while in reality the dirty rats that run around all corners of the world infesting, and looking for leftovers.
            .
We are not proud calling ourselves Arabs, it is you who are proud faking yourselves as the indigenous people of this country when the heavy lot were brought in from among the low caste TN trash by Dutch to work as slaves in northern tobacco farms.

          Idroos Fahmy,
Playing double game is an art all should learn from people like you. This attack is well planned and executed by Srilankan Muslims with the support Muslims. You always supported the government and got ministerial posts. The attckers are wealthy muslims, relatives or friends of Muslim Ministers and also had very close relationship with Buddhist Fundamentalists. The attack was mainly against Tamil Christians, not against Sinhala Buddhists. So far there is no Buudhist Sinhala repraisals against Muslims in any part of the country. That is unusual to this nation. According to intelligence information, original plan to attack in Tamil Nadu, India. USA and NEw Zealand denied giving Srilanka any intelligence. All indicates that it is another political coup by few Muslims associated with Power motivated Sinhala Buddhists.

The target was Christians.. The majority of the victims are Sinhalese. I agree that the radicals had close relationships specially with the Muslim polititions, it was maily for financial reasons & of cause family connections.

This attack was based on religious & Western hatred. Radical Muslim’s globaly hated religion is Christianity so they attacked Christian churches. Their hatred for westerners were paid back by attacking tourist hotels with westerners..

There is no Buddhist radical connection here… Just because you hate Sinhala Buddhists, doesn’t mean that everything is connected to them

Racist comment. So in your twisted opinion, ALL Sinhala Buddhist were happy, and agreed, with the BBS terrorists going around spreading hate, attacking Mosques, businesses, and homes, and when Muslims were killed in Aluthgama.
Get real. The majority of Muslim in this country are peace loving and
        are disgusted by violence.
Stop judging an entire religion for what some extremists do. There are over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, and the majority live in peace and are not terrorists.

Are you that stupid to think the photo was taken when this disaster happened or just after that?

      • 6
        11

Does not matter stupid. He should have changed the photo to another to suit the occasion , instead of posting one that looks very joyful, whilst he is posting something the opposite. You do not go to a funeral and take photos of you smiling and giggling and looking very joyful. When you are posting something about being regretful of something awful that a member of your community/family has done , you do not post it with a photo of you looking joyful, as if you are entering paradise. Use your common-sense.

      SL Kolla,

Go by the contents of the article, not the photo. Most people smile when photos are taken.

He says, while he is very sad about the carnage of the innocents, by the terrorists who claim to be Muslims, there is no need to apologize for the terrorist acts committed by the terrorists, that is contrary to his religion, Islam. Why should he apologize for the terrorists. He is sympathizing with the victims, we all are.

There have been many Sri Lankan Muslims, pointing out the Satanic activities of Tauheed Jamat, who are offshoots of the Wahhabi-Salafis who follow the Devil, Satan, Iblis, per prescient Hadith of Najd. Just Google.

In fact, the Satanic Tauheed started attacking the peaceful Sufi Muslims over 20 years ago, and the state did not provide protection. Many Moderate Muslims contacted the authorities, and they did nothing.

Fast forward to Easter Sunday, despite warnings thrown at their face, the authorities did nothing.

Who should apologize? The authorities, the President, the Prime Minister, the Defense Minister and the IGP.

They should apologize to the victims, the Catholics, the tourists and the Sri Lankans, Buddhists, Muslims, Tamils, Hindus, Christians, Agnostics and Atheists for their gross failure.

Exactly! As usual Rtd. Lt. Reginald Shamal Perera has come out with the right answer. Do not confuse Muslim with the other religious extremists and don’t confuse Muslims with the followers of other religions. Doing so would be like confusing Hydrocyanic Acid with Vinegar. Both are acids, but one can never compare Vinegar with HCN.
        .
They may say many things as this guy does. But in their hearts they all consider us as as Infidels. And what is the prescribed treatment for Infidels. Th Quran itself says it is to kill them. There are no ambiguities. That is what the Quran says. And that is what ISIS doing. and what other Muslims would be doing one day.
        .
The rewards are too greta to be ignored. 72 virgins and rivers of wine.

Niro the Pakistani refugees belong to Ahamediya sect who are a peaceful lot. They are being persecuted in Muslim countries mainly by Sunnis. They fled Pakistan for fear of their lives. Now they have been caught in this crossfire and have been moved out from Negombo to Kandy to protect them. Only Shia country that is committing terrorism is Iran, while the rest of the terrorist states are Sunni.

Whatever is said the Muslims have a different psychology…they cannot be trusted.. They have the herd or Tribal mentality siding with Muslims anywhere in the world…. Classic example: the recent terror attack on Military in Kashmir… Thousands who commented in Social Media in Sri Lanka all sided Imran Khan.. and hate comments on MODI… Now why is that…? These guys living in Sri Lanka.. Citizens.. what Pakistan or India has done to them..? when they are not citizens of those Countries why hate Modi and support Imran Khan..? Then the Christchurch incident.. Hate speech again on Australian.. calling white supremacy.. . Then Sinhalese boys marrying Muslim Girls is taboo..they would hunt :& kill either the Sinhalese boys or Girls…or both. . But Muslim men are encouraged to get married to Sinhalese women ..however the woman should convert to Islam… Some men maintain a mix due to the freedom to get married 4.times…WHY? These are nothing but religious fanaticism… These extremisms are not practiced in other religious faiths… As such Muslims are a very dangerous community… They Pray 5 times a day. They do not understand that people born to this World are not for Religion but Religion is for them ..unfortunately unlike the rest of the world faiths the Muslims have chosen the former..

If you want to test the authenticity of Sri Lankan Muslims, wait until June 7th when Sri Lanka plays against Pakistan at the 2019 Cricket World cup.

Wear a skull cap and walk around Dematagoda or Kosgas Handiya and watch the Muslim watching the Cricket matches and cheering for Pakistan.

If these things have not taught us a lesson, I don’t know what would. But the worse is, I think the Sinhalese Lion is already dead. We are just awaiting for the last rites and the burial to be performed. The last as always has been is the Army. The glorious Army is the only thing that can stand in the way. If at all it happens.

We had a bombardment that we’ve never seen before and look at the meek response. The Muslims know this very well. They know they have already won.

    Farweez Imamudeen,

Your Religion Islam from the time your so called Prophet Mohamed took control to spread Islam he has killed many a person, who did not believe him with the sword. Now this is a FACT in History. They were called Holy Wars. These wars were so bad many a men got killed. Thereafter due to the lack of men for the women to marry, each man was permitted to keep seven wives. The Ulemas have taken the responsibility to punish individuals of your faith interpreting the Quran to their fancy. If their is any truth in your non existent God Allah, then why should Ulemas take the responsibility. Let God Allah punish the Offenders just like how Allah is to offer Virgins to Martyrs. Where are these Virgins kept? In Mars? Muslims are forced to pray five times a day, must be for the villainy they commit. Who are the biggest Drug peddlers and Smugglers in any society?

Do you know that if the Muslims do not stop their Terrorism, they are highly vulnerable in the future for over 80% of their male population to be exterminated, if a simultaneous attack is launched on noon prayers on a Friday in every Mosque. Thereafter your community will have to permit a man to marry not only seven but twenty one. Leave your Muslims to practice Islam according to their wishes without forcing them. I know there are many Muslim friends of mine do not believe all the crap in the Quran but are frightened to question even for the fear of reprisals and possible death to the individual. If not for humanity Salman Rushdie, Nsrath Nasarin, Nasrin Shoudet would have been killed by your ignorant Mullahs. Don’t you think if Allah was powerful he would not have dealt with them? On the contrary they are happily living because there is no God as Allah in existence.

I am one who will stand with the author on what he has declared in this article. He had the courage to speak as a fellow human being and that is what is lacking in many of us. If one thinks the Sinhala people are better, they have forgotten contemporary history of Sri Lanka, where commuters were greeted in the morning with chopped off heads lining roundabouts, scores of bodies floating in the rivers, people burnt with flaming motor-vehicle tyres around their necks, mass graves of one description or other, during events in 1971 and the period 1989-91. It would be the height of stupidity to alienate and marginalise a minority group for the acts of a few. A 27 year war should have taught us something. But has it?

Well, the Christian extremist in NZ was motivated thinking Islam promotes violent Jihad. The Moslem extremist in SL was also motivated thinking Islam promotes violent Jihad.

This is the common ground you need to find solutions. Both extremists think the same thing. Fix this and you fix similar issues.

This is the result of the age old crusades hitting our shores.. We can really do without Crusades arriving here.

Click on “Jambu” above and see how Buddha was born in SL. Embracing this will save all these problems for all.

    2

I agree with the writer that the problem is not one of the teachings of one religion as against those of another. A millennium ago the Islamic world was the treasure house of the world’s culture and learning, and produced scholars who were remarkably secular in outlook. As for violence, the Crusades were terrorism on the part of Western Christendom that that helped to destroy the advanced Christian civilization of Byzantium.

Where I disagree with the writer is in drawing a sharp dividing line between ourselves and the terrorists. There is empathy with terrorism lurking in all of us – whether state terrorism or the kind of terrorism by other groups which this country has widely witnessed since the outbreak of communal violence in the 1950s. What is our initial reaction to attacks on symbols of power we feel injured by? What was our reaction to the attack on the Twin Towers, a symbol of power that sustains Israel and humiliates the Arabs?

Terrorism is ultimately most injurious to the community whose cause it claims to uphold. That is why intellectually, at least, it is intolerable.

As David Shulman, the Israeli scholar who visited this country recently has pointed out, it is peaceful legal methods by Palestinians to win back their rights that has got the Israeli authorities thoroughly upset.

A number of Sinhalese leaders, notably Jayewardene, thought that they could humble the minorities by strategic acts of limited terror. Some of Rajapaksa’s supporters extended this approach to the Muslims. We are living with the consequences today. That is something for all of us to think about – Sri Lanka’s 70 years of stagnation.

    • 2
      1

Terrorism by virtue of what it can cause is an effective tool to sustain power whether it is political or economical. No matter what form it takes – religion, state, nationalism, ethno-nationalism, racial – in essence it remains the same; it is a destructive force and it is used as a tool to sustain political and economical power. Once it is unleashed it shrouds the whole society with fear; a man may be deprived of food and drink but when his life is threatened he wants nothing but to survive. His attention is now diverted from those who are withholding his food and drink to those who are threatening his existence. Once people are scared and vulnerable the institutions that use terrorism as a diversion tool to preserve and safeguard their own interests run their agendas quite freely with no force to resist them.

Hence terrorism is evil and destructive. You should either be utterly ignorant, insane or an extremist to side with it. It dehumanizes the other. Killing the other is therefore justified on the basis that the other is a menace to the world terrorism aspires to create. Terrorism thus argues that only by weeding out the menace it can create a utopian world with only good people as defined by the ideology of the terrorist.

So is it fair to say that there is empathy with terrorism lurking inside all of us? Isn’t this a dangerous proposition? Doesn’t this mean that no one can be good even if they wish to? If what you say is true are we not compelled to live in constant suspicion of the other? Can I never suppress the inclination to choose terrorism to achieve my goals and stand outside terrorism, with humanity?

Even if no one has been harmed by Sinhala Buddhists but just for raising the voice against forceful conversions and insults to Sinhala Buddhist culture, so-called pundits of civil society organizations and media outlets were so quickly named that there are extremist Sinhala Buddhist ideologists who harm other minority faiths.

But even if we eyewitness the horrendous and despicable crimes by extremist Islamic terrorists, the same pundits say that there are no Islamic Extremists whose main weapon is the terrorism. What these pundits say is that these terrorists are not Muslims but followers of the faith of terrorism. But no one can deny that all these terrorists are inspired by some sort of fundamentals within Muslim faith that lead to extremist ideology and finally terrorism.

If Muslims want to address these issues, intellectual and peace-loving Muslims should hold a world-wide convention and they should remove anything in their fundamental ideologies that may lead their community to extremism and terrorism. That is the way forward to update their faith to suit the modern world values. If the writer says there are so and so statements in Muslim faith that helps to peaceful cohabitation with different faiths, any other contradictory statements should be removed even if they are written in a different context. Then only we can accept that Muslims are genuine in denouncing terrorism and extremism.

All Tamil speaking people must unite irrespective of their religion, caste or the date of arrival.

    Taking Responsibility

    Farweez Imamudeen

On the 21st of Sunday a few men bearing Muslim names strolled into churches and hotels carrying heavy backpacks. While men, women and children were celebrating the resurrection of the Christ, immersed in prayer and divine contemplation, the suicide bombers shattered their peace and bodies with a savage blast; while unsuspecting guests walked in with their families and friends into the hotel cafeteria for breakfast the suicide bombers served them with a deadly scoop of death.

*** You are trying to dissociate yourself from this terrible attack but sadly no body will buy it . This is nothing new and Islam has a history such attackes . . The biggest statute of Bhudda was blown up by Taliban in Kabul for no reason other than religious hate. You cant call them terrorist.

But for the loss of innocent lives I put the blame on the “Majority” . Every action has a reaction and through their brutality over 70 years they Created LTTE and now ISS has filled the vaccum with dire consequences. I am afraid we havent seen nothing yet . No getting away from this unless the majority show remorse and change. Sri Lanka has now internationalised the war thnaks to MR Gotha and BBS.

I am yet to see a single Muslim country condemn the attacks in Sri Lanka or any attacks anywhere in the world. What does that say about Muslims? Of course Sri Lanka muslims will say whatever because they are now scared.

[“All Tamil speaking people must unite irrespective of their religion, caste or the date of arrival.”]

Native who ruined this concept? It is the Muslims. They exploited their Tamilness to ruin the Tamils and finally the tamil speaking people of SL. They have gone to the extent of calling themselves an an entirely different people, different origin and religion. If SL has to be saved this concept has to change. There need to be a new order. By this we will safeguard the rational Muslims and I am sure that will be the majority. Religious freedom has to be there provided that religion do not undermine others values and safety and even existence.
