The Art Of Lying – Ask Gammanpila

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Of course, Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila is the founder President of ‘Pivithuru Hela Urumaya.” (PHU). Mind you, it is simply ‘pivithuru,’ or pure. The party he was in before was The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU). He, it can be logically inferred, left the JHU to form the PHU because the JHU wasn’t the pure form of the Platonic Universal which lies somewhere in transcendent realty. In other words, the JHU was a poor shadow of the Sinhala Buddhist nationalism that exists as a universal somewhere in a reality beyond the reality that one can empirically feel and touch and see. On the other hand, in the case of Gammanpila he has been able to download the very Platonic Universal itself.

That is for a bit of philosophy. What we remember is how exactly Gammanpila left the JHU in the dark secret night having sworn to the hierarchy the evening before that he will never even think of deserting the party that had delivered a Parliamentary seat to him. And that wasn’t even after eating hoppers. Gammanpila simply swore without the hoppers. He retired home and announced the following day he is forming the pure thing. He is always pure-appearing in pure white clothes taken from a wardrobe full of pure whites.

When his former colleagues of the JHU including, his bosom pal Patali Champika Ranawaka, expressed shock at Gammanpila’s turnaround like a trapeze artist, our friend PHU didn’t bat an eye lid. He walked with his head high and shoulders erect as though nothing in the world had happened. Here is the key to Gammanpila’s deceitful conduct: An air of supreme confidence. The Chinese Philosopher G. Chan once said that an air of confidence helps a liar to get away with his lying. Gammanpila has mastered that art. You cannot catch him looking guilty.

gammanpilaPHU leader Gammanpila’s latest pivithuru act was at the Hambantota protest. I spotted him in video, that is now going around, crying in high octave:” This yahapalanaya government has sold our valuable land to the Chinese. Won’t be long before they sell the Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhi and the Dalada Maligawa. We must stop them on track now or never!”

Now, Gammanpila knows he was lying, again. This so-called sale of land to foreign investors was done prominently and sans immunity by the former regime in which he was Minister. Valuable blocks of land in Galle Face, Colombo Port and even in the jungles in the sacred Somawati precincts had been “sold,” like this by that government. Gammanpila said nothing in protest because he knew this is really not the sell-out that he talks of now. Governments giving blocks of land to foreign investors on a 99-year lease is a well-worn economic strategy. “99-year,”is a technical arrangement to entice the foreign investor to dump his investment with confidence. The Chinese Government would not take over a large block of land in Hambantota or anywhere for a short period. The “ninety nine years” has become a standard period for acceptance all over the world. Of course government can take back the lease before that on condition of paying compensation. Hence, this kind of arrangement isn’t anything like selling Sri Lanka. As a matter of fact, two years ago the Australian Federal Government gave a ninety-nine year lease of land in Darwin to a Chinese Company for investment.

If anybody were to protest over issues of this kind it certainly cannot be a Minister of the Rajapaksa Regime. To find Mahinda Rajapaksa hiding and planning the invasion of protestors isn’t surprising since Mahinda is a moral sceptic and Machiavellan. He at no stage ever appeared as a statesman. He cannot.

And what do you think of Gammanpila bringing out the image of the Dalada Maligawa and Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhiya? Sri Lankan politicians cannot get out of the rut of using religion in their power machinations. Persons in robes are huddled up and rushed in at will. I purposely refrain from naming them “monks,” because they very well may not be. Is this the work of the Pivituru types who are supposed to be there to save the Buddhist Sanga? When the MEP was formed in 1956 under the leadership of SWRD Bandaranaike who donned pivithuru clothes monks were heavily employed to get on to stage and shout that the nation is in danger. It was really and ironically SWRD who was in danger as he was shot and killed by a monk after he came to power. Monks who enter the political arena enter a political power game. Their power lever is the Buddhist robe. Being pivithuru, Gammanpila should distance himself from moves like this.

In the case of Hamabantota, the police had been prepared to allow shouting and protest behind legitimate barricades even though there was a court order prohibiting public protest for this special occasion. However, monks were pushed forward along with lay people to try and break barricades and invade the meeting area where foreign dignitaries were. This entitles them for a share of tear gas along with the rest of the mingling crowd. Tear gas is not life-threatening; it is merely temporarily disabling mischief makers. It is heartening relief to find that there were no deaths.

Yet, knowing all this, Gammanpila and his fellow MR-backers condemned the Yahapalanaya government as being dictatorial and undemocratic. Once again, anybody is entitled to criticise the government as being undemocratic; but in all honesty not the former Ministers of the Rajapaksa government. The list of undemocratic acts of that regime are so legion that it is tedious to list them.

Shimone, Appavithra Udaya may be a liar and fool, but so too is your hero, Ranil Wickramasinghe, whose economic team is massively STUPID and not versed in global economic trends and corrupt as are the Bond Scam foot note crew who have not heard of the word DEGLOBALIZATION – de leveraging of FDI, Trade and people flows and the reversal of globalization.

Please read up on De-globalization by Ruchir Sharma.
Sri Lanka needs to develop its own economic growth strategy and then fit in the Chinese, India, Japanese and American investors if they want to come. Sri Lanka’s National Development POLICY approach should the other way around. First identify the COMPARATIVE Advantage and then fit in the US, CHINA, India etc who are circling around, rather than panic and sell off lands because some US Govt. sponsored economist at Harvard wants Sri Lanka to roll over and let the Americans roll in!
Ruchir Sharma, of Head of Morgan Stanley has argued that 1) there is very little FDI going around because of huge DE-GLOBALIZATION. 2) growing at 5 percent excellent because globally growth is slow because of massive DEBT in the world economy, so Sri Lanka rolling over and giving away lands to the Chinese and the Americans in a desperate bid to bring FDI and more growth is useless.

99 year lease is essentially a sale of the property because Ranil and his team of economic hit men are living in the Dark Ages, still thinking that 7 percent growth is possible when as Sharma notes growing at 5 percent is very good since only 6 countries are growing at around 7 percent mainly because they are counties like Myanmar that are newly opened up and starting from a low base.

      Hambanthota port; What I’ve read,

Cost per annum Rs 60 billion.

      Income Rs 2 billion.

How do we find Rs 58 billion every year to upkeep this national treasure and pass it on to our children?

      Simple, isn’t it?

Can anyone suggest the much vaunted “other options/alternatives?” Please be specific; no platitudes. Thanks.

Only simple way of silencing (not balancing 58 billion cost with 2 billion income) Mahinda followers is to hand over the port to Him (MR).

Udaya Gonthadipila – can twist anything and everyhting in favours of his parties. That is how the man has been talented to. හැරැනු හැරැනු විදියට කතා කොරන්ඩ පුලුවන් මුඛයක් දෙවියා උදයට දිිලා තියෙන්නෙ- THESE MEN CAN ONLY HARM THIS NATION. There are enough evidences that the man abused almost everything sofar. Those who then donated 100 buck for his campaign were deceived as no others did before. Like virulent insects can spread creating epidemies, these political parasites do their job in terms of politics. No matter how the general public would feel. I think prevailing laws must get shaped to marginaize the kind of culprits of fine sort. They weare so called national dress but behave as all the high criminals.

DON STANLEY I have no heroes. My support for persons is only conditional upon delivery of good outcomes for the country. This government has, thus far, done a lot of good work. Ranil has some excellent economic plans but let’s wait patiently to see if they would work out. If this government fails, we must move on to a better one; not back to the corrupt and abusive regime of the Rajapkses.

    Don Stanley,

I don’t know whether you read Shyamon’s article. His article is about Gamanpila’s role in the Hambantota protest, not about the right or wrong about the Ranil – Maithiri Govt’s economic policies. It is good that you read about deglobalization and Ruchir Sharma’s contributions but the opinions and views on economic growth and globalization widely differs between economists.
The Nation wnet through the dark ages between 2005 and 2015. The war, the lies about the war, massacre of civilians, nation turning towards dictatorship, Chinese investment in unproductive projects, denial of people’s democratic rights, corruption to its highest level etc. The impact of those dark ages on economic growth is not over jet and still the same group is trying to bring back the dark ages with lies. There is an urgent need to eliminate this barrier in order to achieve positive economic growth.

The “Art Of Lying” is a MUST for all Politicians and Gammanpila is no exception. But the “Art Of Lying” will be staged in it’s real sense and form, when the case against him, of that “Sale of Shares” on a “Fraudulent Power of Attorney” comes up in Courts.

Our lying politicians come at the top of any global table. Across all parties…

In our national league, Gamma and Champa are fighting for the top slot.

They treat the whole country as theirs to sell, and they will, The thing is that they are hopeless at negotiating/obtaining value for money. As long as there is percentage for them (by hook or by crook) they will find a way. To hell with what’s good for the people!

Some of these pakaya’s will sell their own mother (for 10%, please) so what problem with selling Mother Lanka.

    Hi Shyamon!
You write: “Ranil has some excellent economic plans but let’s wait patiently to see if they would work out.”
‘Excellent economic plans’! Do you think CT readers are kindergarten kids who believe in Santa? Or do you think we are on April 01, 2017?
If this (neo-liberal economic plan) was right the Americans would not change their regime and vote for Trump! Brexit would not happen! China wouldn’t be a economic super power! Mahinda wouldn’t be the most popular politician even today in SL.
Advise your boss to hold a simple local election and prove me wrong, if you can!
First of all, why did your boss antagonize the Chinese government during the election campaign? You must still remember what he said about the Port City, and Hambantota Port? Your boss said he would cancel the Port city project completely. Who is the liar here?
Ravi K also started the same old game until he was warned to shut up by the Chinese ambassador. He said Ravi K was a ‘liar’. (He actually just certified openly what 58 million Sri Lankans had previously thought)!
You say “The list of undemocratic acts of that regime are so legion that it is tedious to list them.” You know it is the same or even greater about your boss’s rule. I don’t have to enumerate the list from the 100 day program in 2015 to the Volkswagon project in 2017. I am surprised why the German car maker has not sued the government of SL yet for defamation and this blatant lie/ misuse of the company logo. You are talking about Gammanpila here but you conveniently forget that you have hundreds of Gommanpillayas in this Yahapalana government who lie, and also support any lie your Yahapalana bosses utter.
Who is the liar here? Why the Central Bank bond scam was hidden behind a lethargic legal process? Don’t keep telling lies after lies to justify your argument. Just accept it like a gentleman and face the music.
Today who is suffering? Not you, because you are comfortably living in Australia! It is the average men, women, and children in Sri Lanka, who are undergoing a terrible day & night struggle while your boss is giving perks after perks and bonanzas including luxury cars to his supporters to keep his majority in Parliament.
If your boss were a smart politician he would have played all of these issues safe like a true democrat. That’s what we expected from him. Instead, he has proved time and again he is not clean and he is not trustworthy at all. Now, not only the 62 million fools who trusted your boss, but also everybody has been compelled to pay the price!
Well, you want us to wait patiently to see if your boss is right. We could have waited for Mahinda too if it were the case. Let me tell you this story!
There was a jackal that waited and waited for all his life near a river bank until the testicles of a stout deer fall off! You know those two mango shaped, mushy balls never fell and the deer eventually swam to the other side of the river.

The clan got the Chinese to build Norochcholai power plant. The repair cost exceeds its cost of construction.

The clan also got the Chinese to build Hambantota Harbour. The Chinese construction company forgot to remove a rock in the middle of the harbour and demanded another $150 million.

Hey “One of those.” You write like an offended Rajapakse cheer squad man who had gone in procession to H’tota. The Hambantota economic Zone is a great brain wave by the PM to save the whole country from sure seconomic disaster by having to pay off the unpayable loan that your hero, Mahinda, got from China on a dead project. Rajapakses got so many loans because that is how they looted the country. Now you people shout saying the country is being sold. As the writer has pointed out even the Australian government had given a huge acreage in the Port Of Darwin to Chinese investors. This is being done in Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan-not to speak of African countries. Your King did the same in his time when he leased out Colombo port section and some valuable lands in the country. Somawathie was leased to Chinese for a Banana plantation. But no bananas except the ones your King and sons and brother have.

SriLanka seems to be following the world trend in Politics..hopefully not .. .Political mavericks offering simplistic solutions to complex problems by creating an environment of the fear of the unknown and the liberator from such a drastic future and thereby win the the vote of the uneducated ..uneducated as to how the change has taken place and how far we should go . .Other Politicians offer solutions with epithets beyond the understanding of the average voter like the ancient Guru or over Lord and the voter is led to wait and see the outcome of this one small mind that has devised this magic plan of a ‘sincere leader ‘ who only knows how to deal with the immense number of conferences of those foreign delegates at the home front or outside .where all enjoy the perks and talk sweet nothing signing all those investment projects rushed to them by hopeful enterprising magnates …so we believe for we are people living with hope ….A court order to stop a protest for they know not how to control one is it a new innovation within the frame work of the law is it a world first no no it happened elsewhere and the World protested a PM cried too . .This issue of the Hambantota port and the acquisition of land for an industrial zone should have been brought before the people long before the dignataries were invited .Surely we do not want to tell the outsiders that our people are so ignorant that they do not understand why arable virgin land is precious should not be concreted and factories opened up owned by outsiders offering work to us like working in the in some industrial zone in the ME or Singapore or wherever not our own .. ..should not our Yaha Palanaya be less condescending and less patronizing ..

The following is a passage from Today’s CT article written by one of your colleagues:
“The bond scam and other excesses by government ministers equal or SURPASS the scandals that beset the Mr administration. The PM, RW hereto Mr. clean, has been tarred with allegations of complicity in the bond scam. His attempt to save his guru and former dip Charlie Mahendran son Arjuna Mahendran, the sacked Governor of the Cb along with his son in law Arjun Aloysius turned out to be the BIGGEST POLITICAL BLUNDER in the Pm’S political history. Where did the PROCEEDS of the bond scam go? Was it to finance the outstanding bills of Maithripala Sirisena’s January 2015 Presidential campaign or the UNPs August Campaign? The country needs to know. The PM’s brilliant Googly of sending it to the AG was the best way to divert attention and buy time to let the memory fade away from the peoples mind, but the ghosts would remain and will wake up at the appropriate time.”
The best part of this CT article is:”but the ghosts will wake up at the appropriate time.”
    To Ismail!
Can you smell it now? Or do you need further help to smell and smile?

Where is the scam in bonds? There was a massive scam under MR when Cabaraal bought Greek bonds and the petroleum fellow did hedging. This alone cost billions. Courts will decide if that was a scam or not under former CB chair. You or the COPE cannot . Cope is a political body. Even the Chiarman of Cope was appointed by the UNP government from the oppostion. This shows how above-board the PM and Sirisena are. MR’s time COPE chair was one of his cronies. Yet, the COPE reported 32 frauds but MR your King did nothing. He was himself looting so how can he pull up others?

During the political debate on ‘Derana Wadhapitiya’
this man Gembanpila shouted off Mujiburrahman at
one point , “this is not Maradana Mudukkuwa ” which
the UNPer just ignored or didn’t hear in the heat
of the exchange . What this Gembanpila forgot was
that he also represents the same MUDUKKUWA as the
MP from COLOMBO DISTRICT !People belonging to all
communities live in MARADANA MUDUKKU ! But those
Mudukku people are pretty much better than the
ONE RUPEE BEGGER MP WHO IS GEMBANPILA !!! TO BECOME
AN MP , GEMBANPILA COLLECTED ONE RUPEE FROM MUDUKKU
ALL OVER COLOMBO DISTRICT .He must know that
Unilever is in a Mudukku , Singer Srilanka is in a
Mudukku , Elphinstone is in Maradana Mudukku ,late
president Premadasa was from Mudukku , Sugathadasa
Stadium is in a Mudukku ,prestigious Ananda college
is in MARADANA MUDUKKU and one of the only two
capital’s railway station is in the MUDUKKU and
many more . It is very funny a man who is an MP for
Mudukku people and begged one rupee from them is now
insulting his voters calling them MUDUKKU !

Absolutely. This man Gonthadipila is beyond all bearing.

I have no doubt that Gonthadipila abused that australian business man as he claimed in his case. All these should fall on them to be away from lanken politics – is my bless.
I HAVE NO DOUBT THE GUY SHOULD HAVE BEEN BORN TO MUDUKKU :: WHOEVER WHATEVER BEINGN SAID AND DONE: bringing up of a person is very important. From UG s behaviour, we can consider him as average decent person.
Unfortunately, unlike in 70ties, we dont have exemplary politciains in the country today.
Senior politicians leave no examples to these young one to follow. That is a big vaccuum in lanken politics of the day.

To Ismail (from one of the 62 million voters)!
You can definitely have a temporary smile (a little chune, as some Sri Lankans say)! But, but, but,…..
As Mr. Hilmy Ahmed has clearly explained in his CT article the ‘Bond’ “ghosts will wake up at the appropriate time” at every election rally and devour the culprits who shamelessly swallowed (robbed) billions of tax payers money from the Central Bank, EPF etc.
I don’t think even you will be spared if you guys try to shamelessly cover them!

    To Native Veddalay Aththo!
You comment: “Chinese CC forgot to remove a rock in the middle of the harbour and demanded another $150 million.”
My question: Is it now removed?
When I was checking this ‘rock story’ I found an interesting voice cut by Ex-Prez MR. He entertained the audience by asking the same question:
“Ko ara gala” (Where is that rock?)
Eka kapala vennathi (It must have been cut).
    Kavuda kapuve (who cut it)?
    Ranil vennathi (Must be Ranil).
Huge applaud and laughter in the audience

DEBEAKARALANTHO. I watched this particular video you referred to about the Rock joke by MR. There wasn’t ANY notable laughs from the audience at all. Watch again. Former President, who has behaved all through his tenure and even after that in an appalling foul way, using foul language as a signature trademark, in this instance tried a vain attempt to dig at Ranil’s alleged [Edited out]. It was a poor and low level to which MR dropped. Hardly any noticed that the rock reference was applicable to Ranil in the way intended. The response was so poor that MR stopped and looked around waiting for one, which didn’t come. No take. He followed by saying,”Mama neweyi kiyanne oyagollo.”
Here is an extract from Lasantha’s story:Click it to read about the foul langugue of MR

    To Candapa,
You are wrong! MR entertained the audience with this ‘rock-cutting’ story very well. Probably you must have missed that part!

It is pretty low for LION and DEEBEKARALA to enjoy such a foul joke coming from a man who once held the highest position in the island. The Lasantha story referred to shows what a cad MR was. Very low- bred. These critics are also living in the 19th century. Homo sexuality is not regarded as an issue in modernised Western lands. Many leaders men and women proudly declare their homo sexuality and equality in marriage is now adopted in almost all modernised lands. I don’t know about Ranil’s alleged gay qualities. To me it is irrelevant. More pertinent is the point that he is the only leader SL can count on now. He has definite vision and utter honesty unlike the mutt we had before him who can only spray filth from his mouth and who got his siblings sons and paramours to loot the country

    Candapa

Here is a news item that appeared on BBC during the Hambantotta rock & roll farce.

Rock on seabed delays Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port
    By Charles Haviland
    BBC News, Colombo
    5 August 2011

    Excerpts:

The Sri Lankan government has admitted that there have been delays to the completion of a massive Chinese-funded port in the south of the island.

A huge rock on the seabed near the harbour entrance is impeding access to Hambantota, one of the government’s showpiece development projects.
Officials say the rock is being successfully blasted away.

But the opposition says it has severely hampered the operation of the port, which was officially opened last year

    ‘No restrictions’

    ….

Exactly how much the rock has delayed progress at Hambantota is under dispute.

An opposition parliamentarian, Harin Fernando, told the BBC that the government ignored feasibility studies which showed the port site to be ill-chosen because of the rock.

He said that at present only shallow vessels can enter Hambantota and alleged that the Chinese state bank financing the port suddenly demanded a large extra sum to blast the rock away.

But ports authority chairman Priyath Wickrama said the blasting was already under way and was safe and relatively cheap, and added there would be “no restrictions at all” on the size of ships able to refuel and bring cargo there.

    To Candappa,
You cannot impose limits or restrictions on jokers or their jokes; even premier cracks jokes in Parliament. While we enjoy his jokes we should be ready to enjoy jokes made by others as well. If you try to restrict them, please remember very well, you, yourself become a joke! That’s the nature of jokes!!
    Thanks.
