The Fate Of The Tamil Community, Seven Years Later

By Raj Subramaniam

Raj Subramaniam

Seven years have passed since the Tamil community in Sri Lanka lost everything in their fight to unchain 500 years of slavery under the command of foreigners who ruled over the Tamils and enforced their alien laws upon them. It was only after several non-violent efforts that Tamil turned to a campaign of armed resistance for self-defense.

Today, society has awoken to the atrocities carried out by ISIS in the Middle East. If only they had opened their eyes to the crimes of Sri Lanka against the Tamils while they transpired. The cause of the conflict in Sri Lanka was primarily Buddhist chauvinism. Whatever crimes ISIS has perpetrated against the innocent citizenry of Iraq and Syria runs parallel to the terrible actions on the island of the religious extremists against the Tamils.

As I do every year, I wanted to take this opportunity to write this article, to assess the state of the community and further empower our future generations to strive for better. Criticism against one’s own state is integral to moving forward and developing ourselves in the eyes of others.

The Eelam Tamil community can only empower itself through our own realization of the fact that we lost the war. My recent visit to the island taught me an important lesson. The people are self-deprecating, living with the mindset that they “lost” and their situation will never ameliorate. Meanwhile, the Government brags that it was and remains victorious. Sadly, this atmosphere had led the Tamils to coalesce behind the government, who allows them access to illicit alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs being imported from Kerala. While the Navy often busies itself with causing trouble for helpless fishermen, trying to find fish to feed their families on the shores, they turn a blind-eye to the smugglers operating between Kerala and Jaffna.

Rather than carry out another genocide against the Tamils, the government has orchestrated a plan to punish those who survived by reviving backwards social issues and playing our leaders like pawns on a chessboard. They have revived casteism and regionalism to the point where they have become daily issues in the island’s cities and towns. The plague of casteism has prevented the citizenry from doing their daily work, not wanting to be seen by their peers of the aristocracy. Innovation and the drive for excellence have run out of fuel, living the bulk of the community idle. These social evils have manifested themselves not only in Sri Lanka but amongst members of the Tamil diaspora as well.A resettled Tamil IDP sits next to his house, which was damaged from the war between Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the government, in Vavuniya

When Eelam was under Tamil control, we stood shoulder-to-shoulder, united for a common cause. I may agree to some extend that the armed resistance ultimately failed to eradicate these societal evils in their entirety. While they were temporarily suppressed by arms, they have since remerged as a significant threat to our community as a whole. Temporary solutions are never the answer, as proved by the aforementioned and the reserved quota system that continues to prevail in India. As Tamils, there should be a sense that we each belong to one nation, perhaps it is only wishful thinking.

I wish to use this article as a platform to discuss some issues that I have found to be of importance. Their resolution will eventually guide us down a path towards greater success. For the reader, this is written with the Tamil community as its intended audience. My apologies to those who may be irked by criticism expressed and to those non-Tamil readers who may find certain ideas confusing or inapplicable.

Mental slavery/Inferior complexity

Tamils have developed an inferiority complex thanks to over 500 years of persecution and ongoing slavery at the hands of foreigners. Our oppressors treated us cruelly, guided only by their machinations and the ideas of what would be best for themselves. We were taught that anyone who was dark-sinned was inherently evil and would be bring about nothing but malice for society. This became abundantly clear after the last battle of the resistance campaign in May 2009.

While our people were slaughtered by the majority Singhalese, the international community turned a blind eye to the suffering of the Tamils. Perhaps there is some truth to the notion that the Singhalese carried out their atrocities as proxies of certain global superpowers. The NGOs which are currently running to the aid of Syrian refugees could not have cared less about our plight. We were crammed onto freight ships or herded into jails, rather than receive the humanitarian aid that we craved.

As a result we were faced with the same psychological after-effects as the Black Africans and Jews, who had faced similar sufferings and hardships after their wars.

A prime example of arose recently in a conversation between two friends of mine. One of these friends happened to be enduring a medical condition from which some spots of his skin turned white. The other friend remarked that he would now finally be recognized and trusted by his fellow Tamils. This is clearly indicative of an inferior complex held by members of our community. Today, Tamil stores are even selling special creams that are advertised to help whiten ones skin. Unfortunately, it is a sure sign that we are living with very low-levels of self-esteem.

Furthermore, when we hear a white man speak Tamil, we find it as unfathomable as a man on Mars. We don’t see them as our equals but rather as our colonial masters. As long as we continue to live with this mindset, we will never be able to rise as a mainstream community.

I have always dreamed that one day our leaders would carry themselves like those of the Jewish people and the State of Israel – leading with a dream and vision. While our Jewish friends have suffered the Holocaust and endured hundreds of years of hardship, they have persevered to become among the most successful people in the world. The difference lies in how our respective communities have approached the task of working with the grassroots. As Jews have formed a tight-knit community, reliant on strong relationships and trust, the Tamils have divided themselves for millions of pointless reasons. We gather in November to pay tribute to those fallen during the war, yet we feel uncomfortable in the company of our fellow community members. Our minds have been poisoned to the extent that rather than set out to improve the lives of our fellow Tamils, we are bent on destroying other and ruining their success. We were brought together artificially for a period of time that has since expired! We never matured to the point where we could grow and uplift each other on our own. Although continued mourning is necessary, we must move forward and rebuild ourselves.

Diaspora community and Tamil organizations

There is a traditional Tibetan saying that goes “Tragedy should be utilized a source of strength”. The tragedy suffered by the Tamil people of Sri Lanka in May 2009 has done very little to help coerce our ego-centric leaders into coming out of their shells and working together. Even in the diaspora, the leaders of various organizations continue to fight over petty personal issues, thus weakening both the unity that is supposed to hold our community together. Rather than stand behind each other to encourage strength, our community has only become more factionalized. The blunders of these foolish “leaders” only helped the Sri Lankan regime get away with their campaign of genocide. It is reasonable to assume that the events of May 2009 would have helped us find a common platform, unfortunately, I believe that it did the reverse.

There has been a lack of efforts by our leaders in nurturing democracy, transparency and accountability in the Tamil organizations of the diaspora. Rather than bring about real change, they choose to play politics behind closed doors. They make decisions based on their own self-interest and proceed without any form of public consultation. The desire for wealth and influence has corrupted these individuals. The future generations should be able to look at these folks as mentors and role-models, not crooks and egotists.

If leaders continue to occupy their current positions and keep the status quo, absolutely nothing will change. They say that the real leaders are born from vacuum. When we continue to hoodwink Tamils with incompetent leadership, we are effectively barring a new line of thinkers from taking over and guiding our community towards a brighter future. The backroom leaders and old-school dinosaurs of the main Tamil organizations must take a que and honour those fallen by stepping down and opening the doors for our new people to pursue leadership roles that will help them make a real impact in the lives of other Tamilians.

Tamils and mainstream politics

While it is good to see Tamil community involved in mainstream politics, we must be reminded that the Canadian electoral system must not be used for our community to advocate the issues of back home. We should educate our politicians about our cause and concern, but contribute to the discussion on issues of domestic importance. We must work with our elected officials to improve our ridings and the lives of our fellow constituents.

Our diaspora and community organizations must endorse candidates based on their values. We must follow a specific criteria for evaluating all candidates. We must not endorse someone because of their pandering to different factions of the community, but instead look at their genuine concern for their community and the issues affecting those who call it their home.

When it comes to members of community choosing to stand for elections, I sometimes see through their façades that it is only because of selfish reasons that they are choosing to do so. Our candidates must embrace professionalism and ethics! On the other hand, some old-timers are actively discouraging the youngsters from getting involved in the political arena. It is disheartening to those who profess their support for democracy and freedom to block the ideas of our most valuable assets – the youth. We need to raise our voices and end this kind of intimidation politics in all political parties. We need to win the hearts and minds of our representatives by showing them one bad seed is not the true portrait of our entire community. We must reengage on the terms of transparency and trust. We serve better when we work together!

International community and Tamils

Tamils are becoming more adaptive, seldom seeking to alter the essential fabric of their adopted homes. They live liberally and mostly adjust to suit the systems that are in place. As a Tamil, I am proud if this and consider it one of our strongest traits. We are born-capitalists with progressive conservative values and never seek to harm the land where we have found asylum.

The international community needs to ensure that our struggle included the same armed resistance as those undertaken by countries such as South Africa, Israel, Kosovo, and East Timor. The African National Congress’ struggle is the same as that of the Tamils. The international community should consider allowing people to continue advocating for control of their own destiny, albeit peacefully. We can now longer allow international pressure to perpetuate 500 years of enslaving our hearts and souls. We have endured so much pain and suffering that now is the time to unchain ourselves from its bondage.

Conclusion

Tamil people must come out of their shells of individualism and integrate themselves in the broader community.

Are we only going to gather at one place on May 18 and November 27th to cry for those lost or are we going to find other ways to uplift and empower each other? Continued morning isn’t the answer.

I want my community to start building plans, roadmaps and start working towards our cause together. It is time that we get to the ground of Eelam and understand what is exactly needed. Today, economically weaken society yet they lack of political leadership who can lead them from front. It is time we use our efforts to mobilize the people on the ground to rebuild their lives through economically, then physically and politically. Unless we interfere into their economic empowerment, we have no moral obligation to interfering into deciding their political destiny. Foremost is to get them under one umbrella maybe by newly created organization, Tamil People’s council.

This is where TPC can play greater role by centralizing the efforts of diaspora groups and the people on the ground. If they able to provide list of people needed help and diaspora team can send support via one channel. While, doing the rebuilding our people can start thinking about political destiny their lives and the lost freedom. It is how we can get them think and allow them grow bigger and become part of one family again.

We must with diaspora efforts invest in rebuilding our education system in Eelam. Rebuilding our universities is of utmost importance. Therefore, let us fund the establishment of a university in the East of Eelam as soon as possible. Education will be the tool to raise a generation that can carry our voices and speak for us on the world stage.

Let us all support maternal health and provide the care necessary to helping all Mothers raise healthy, happy children. A centre in the North and East provide services related to nutrition support will help these women in carrying out their duties. After all, it takes a village to raise a child!

A scholarship system supported by the diaspora will allow the poor to continue their educations. TPC ought to have a financial wing to help guide the applicants in these obtaining scholarships.

We must engage our youth in the North and East through physical activities and organized sports – Cricket, Field Hockey, Soccer, etc. We must reestablish their physical and mental strength by providing them platforms to embrace their own talent. Training together will help foist unity and brotherhood.

Human rights must be monitored on a constant basis to support the people who continue to live in Eelam. Vigilance is of the utmost importance!

My desire is to build a support system where all Tamilians can seek help and raise their self-esteem. It is the result of living under the shadow of slavery for so long that we have lost our will to rise again. Let us invest in a Tamil Support System (TSS) to help shed our complexities and divisions that plagues us. We must teach our youngsters to respect all jobs and careers whatever their own might be – we all depend on each other and idleness is not an option if we wish to become economically sustainable.

Once all these systems start to run their gears, we will have the right morale to coalesce under one banner and express our political aspiration, peacefully.

The unity must start today. When you meet a fellow Tamil, I urge you to greet them. Do not think that their sole purpose is to threaten your own existence. Let us leave behind our differences and approach them with a fresh mind. If possible, hug them and greet them with “we shall meet again in Tamil Eelam”

TAMILS HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO FIND A SOLUTION

Sri Lankan Tamils’ problem was sorted long time ago, but the Tamil leaders weren’t smart enough to accept it. Tamil leaders always end up in wrong side, and look for ways to create disasters not solutions. When G G Ponnambalam was the leader Sinhalese generously agreed for 40:60 solution even though Tamils’ population wasn’t 40% at that time. But Tamil leaders rejected it. Later on decided to take arms from New Delhi to kill their fellow countrymen. Then the second opportunity came through Indo-Lanka agreement. Again Tamil leaders rejected the good offer, but decided to listen to the West, and turned their guns towards their fellow Tamils, Muslims, Sinhalese and Indians.

If Tamil leaders have little brain, little love for their motherland and people they would have found a solution long time ago. Tamil leaders are the least when it comes to honoring smart people. Tamils don’t know the value of unity, the foreign powers can do wonders among Tamils because of their divisions. Jealousy is eating Tamils. Tamils would do anything to undermine their fellow Tamils, even if they have to join with foreign powers. I have been living in Jaffna since last August. I have been to many public events. Indian High Commission and the Westerners are the VIPs for those events, but not smart Tamils or Sinhalese. Therefore, sharing power with Tamils is sharing power with foreign powers; this will lead to disaster. Literally the government has to be on its knees to please the foreign powers; if it shares power with Tamil leaders.

    DANGEROUS CREATURES OF ASIA

Tamil leaders talk a lot about democracy and human rights, but they hardly value democracy or human rights. Where were those Tamil leaders, including the diaspora leaders, the Western leaders, especially the UN leaders when the Tamil armed groups were mercilessly gunned down each other group members; and assassinating political leaders and intellectuals far more than any other terrorist groups in the world? Tamil leaders do not act as they live among the 21st century humanity. Last forty years Tamils have avoided smart Tamils and gone backward. Generally speaking, Tamils can’t handle smart Tamils. This is why they have ended up in this sad status even though Tamils are five times in population in the world than Sinhalese. I have found that changing Tamil leaders’ useless ideology is like straightening a dog’s tail.

Sri Lankan Tamils are the most dangerous creatures in Asia. They are the least when it comes to valuing democracy, human rights or unity. Tamil leaders just blindly support foreign powers for their own benefits. They do dirty politics for their own perks and benefits. That is why Tamils have nothing after thirty years of brutal war. Therefore, I have urged the Sinhalese leaders and the other Asian leaders to watch diaspora and Sri Lankan Tamil leaders’ moves carefully; because, Tamil leaders have the ability to destroy Sri Lanka and South Asia, as they have done for the last three decades. The West has an intention to use Sri Lankan Tamils to dominate Indian Ocean and South Asia; as it has been using the Jews to dominate the Middle East.

    TAMIL LEADERS PROTECT FOREIGN LEADERS

Tamil leaders are for foreign leaders, but not for their own intellectuals. Tamils for Obama and the other Tamil leaders have done nothing when I had alerted that they are in the wrong path. My articles and comments never published in the diaspora’s media or in the mainstream Tamil media. Tamil leaders have done nothing to me when I suffered for exposing the hardships of Australian and Canadian Aboriginal people. Nobody raised their voices when the Australian government deleted my citizenship due to my writings about the struggles of Australian aboriginal people. They never said a word when the Canadian government put me in a prison under false accusation when I exposed the First Nations’ hardships. Not a single leader felt sorry for me when Nazi Germans stopped me from attending my mother’s funeral in Sri Lanka due to my writings.

Germany was bombed and destroyed by the Five Eyes twice; but Germany stopped me from attending my mother’s funeral because I exposed the Five Eyes’ double standards. This is call evolution, even Nazis know the power of unity. They know that they have to stick together to undermine the billions of Asians. However, Sri Lankan Tamils don’t understand the value of unity even after their long suffering for more than three decades due to the Asia’s longest brutal civil war. This is really sad news, not only for Tamils, but for Sinhalese and South Asians. Therefore, I believe that Tamils need to be educated the value of unity from primary school children to political leaders before thinking about devolution of power. If the government shares power now, it will be like giving bunch of flowers to monkeys.

WHY DO I OPPOSE DEVOLUTION OF POWER FOR TAMIL

    EVOLUTION WILL LEAD TO DEVOLUTION

Do you see evolution in Tamils who conducted the Asia’s longest brutal civil war for more than three decades? Do you see evolution in Tamils who assassinated far more leaders and intellectuals than any other terrorist organization in the world? The answer is no; therefore, forget about devolution of power for Tamils. Don’t even think about federalism. Tamils are still under the firm grip of foreign powers which transformed young Tamils as ruthless terrorists in the world. Tamils are still faithful to foreign powers. Therefore, giving power to Tamils is giving power to foreign powers. If we give power to Tamils surely we will lose our trump card as a country located in the strategic Indian Ocean.

The Tamil leaders are not smart enough to find a solution. Therefore, Tamils won’t find a solution. It doesn’t matter whether Tamils cry to Indians or the Westerners; there won’t be a solution. You will get zero answer; if you multiply anything by zero. Likewise, Tamils will get zero results, if they continue to multiply their votes to elect foolish leaders. Tamils won’t go anywhere by avoiding smart Tamils; they will continue to go backward. Tamils have achieved nothing by conducting the Asia’s longest brutal civil war for three decades with the help of the foreign powers. Tamil leaders don’t learn, but blindly follow the foreign powers. Therefore, Tamil leaders need to be watched and guided carefully; instead of sharing power.

      Antany Peter,
You appear to have been ‘banished’ from Australia, Canada and Germany
for criticising those governments which gave you ‘asylum’.
This can happen in any country.

      Now you criticise/insult Tamil Leaders.
      You wont fit in anywhere.

Stand for an elective office and see how many will support you.

Anthony has spoken the truth. Not only Tamil Leaders but even some Sinhala leaders like Sattlite, Ranil etc. are pupets of the Western mafia. They will do anything as long as their positions in power are safeguarded by this mafia. Once people like Anthony live in these countries their eyes get opened to the double standards of politicians.

You seems to have some psychological problem. Lets see you have been imprisoned and expelled from Germany, Canada, Australia, Italy, france and UK. You must have done something terrible to be expelled from this many countries. Have you been to China or Russia, May be that is where you should go and they will accommodate you. Their prisons are more suitable to you. One advice try to reduce the drug intake.
      Good luck mate.

When you say proud man, is it implies as a proud terrorist?

I wasn’t expelled from Australia, Canada or Germany. Get your facts right, but I exposed Australia’s and Canada’s double standards, because of that I faced hardships. Australia and Canada were invaded on genocide. I am well aware of Nazi Germans. You must be bloody fool to talk highly about those countries. No wonder why you have nothing after three decades of brutal war. Worse of all, Tamils are five times in population in the world than Sinhalese. Still you lost it badly, because too many fools like you are leading Tamils.

For your note, Chinese and Russians live in their own country but Australians, Canadians, Kiwis and Americans invaded others homelands on genocide. You are not smart enough to understand this reality otherwise you would not have ended up in this sad status. Carry on your stupidity, keep insult and disrespect smart Tamils like me, but listen to Indians and the Westerners and destroy yourselves. Let me assure one thing, you won’t see devolution of power in your lifetime. Keep dreaming for devolution of power as you have dreamed for Eelam for the last three to four decades. Eventually you will die without Eelam or devolution of power. This is the beauty of trusting foreign powers.

          Antany,
Whites settled in America 400 years back, it is said that they killed lot of locals (genocide).. According to Sinhalese history, our forfathers settled in Lanka 2500 years back, and they had killed almost all the locals at that time. According to your theory, SL should be belongs to Sinhalese and Tamils who settled thousands years back.. But whites who settled 400 years back in USA, can NOT called it is their country. 400 years agaist 2500 years. 2500 Or 4000 (Chinese) are magic numbers .. 400 is what?? . And You think you are genius and call others stupid.. I pity you..

      Dear Antany Peter,
“The west has intention to use Srilankan Tamils to dominate Indian ocean and South Asia” – You are spot on.
People were not wrong when they said that history repeats itself.
Prior to the advent of European colonialists to this area, Tamils were the super powers of the Indian ocean, not Chinese or Aryans.
Therefore it is natural that west wants to retrace the past.
Unfortunately China also has that same intention.
China has entrenched in Srilanka not for the benefit of Sinhalese but to destabilise India, and they hope to do it using Tamils.
I hope Tamils will not fall for that, because once China achieves it’s objective, it will let Tamils down.
Kuveni’s curse will never allow Sinhalese to have peace.

I said that the West has an intention to use Tamils, but I never said that the West will succeed with Tamils. Smart Tamils couldn’t work with you, Sinhalese tried their best with you since the independence, and Indians got cheated by you when you rejected the Indo-Lanka agreement and turned against the IPKF. Do you think that the West will succeed with you? You are fooling yourselves. I am calling you ‘The dangerous creatures of Asia’ for a reason.

“Prior to the advent of European colonialists to this area, Tamils were the super powers of the Indian ocean, not Chinese or Aryans.”

        Could you cite your evidence.

Chola navy was powerful only for about 200 years. Then the Arabs through their international trade slowly and steadily established their foothold in Maldives and South East Asia.

The Chinese Admiral Zheng He commanded Ming dynasty’s fleet. His ships were so large it could store all the ships of Columbus and da Gama combined, in one deck. He visited this island, captured the King of Kotte, Vira Alahakonara (Tamil/Malayali descendant) in 1411 and dragged him all the way to China.

Since the Tamil kings of Tamil Nadu were too busy fighting among themselves they failed to rule their Kingdoms.

          Native Vedhdha,
Cholas and after that Pallavas, ruled Java, Sumatra, Malacca, Kedah and Cambodia, where evidence exists still. The Capital of Pallava empire in South East Asia was Palambang in Sumatra. Angor Watt in Cambodia and Borobudhur were constructed by Pallavas. The Present Sultans of Brunei, Kedah and other Malay states are all Pallava descendants. The bell of Cholas recovered from Kedah is in Australian museum. Though Cholas (Tamil) and Pallavas (mix of Tamil and Telegu) were cousins, they fought amongs themselves resulting in the downfall of both. Upto that time, the sea trade in Indian Ocean was dominated by Cholas and Pallavas. It is only after they disintegrated, Arabs started coming into these areas for trade, especially spices from Kerala and Srilanka. They spread Islam to Maldives, Malaysia and Indonesia. Still Bali remains as a Hindu Kingdom. The first King to be converted was Parameshwara of Malacca, who after coversion took the name of Ishkander Shah. The preponderace of Sanskrit and Tamil words in Malay is due to the influence of Pallavas and Cholas. Arabs never ruled any part of South or South east Asia. Even the Chinese started coming into Indian Ocean only after the fall of Tamil domination in the sea. When Europeans came into these areas, the Arab trade fell and Chinese were not allowed access.

A lot of the Tamils are confused about cultural influences (soft power) as opposed to military control (hard power) over a kingdom. Of course Tamil Nadu was a trading nation for more than 2000 years, and carriers of culture and religion.

The only tme Cholas invaded and controlled were pockets of areas, Cholas never the rulers of a large foreign empire.

              NV,

You are absolutely right. Tamilaham-especially the Chola Nadu, in South India was a great trading nation and left its impact in many countries around the world. With regard to Lanka of old, both Lanka and South India were in reality at best a sphere of influence for both the Kings of South India and Lanka. We intervened on behalf Kings there and they did in support of our own. We imported brides and royalty from their ranks. King Gajabahu visited Kerala to attend the crowning of a Chera King. I also think in the distant past, Lanka was very much integrated with India in terms of culture, language, religion, migrations, trade and political intrigue. This led to the Cholas in particular ruling parts of Lanka for long periods. We, however, also loved to hate India, because, we both Sinhalese and Tamils, wanted to be distinct people’s , not desirous of being overwhelmed by South India. Thus, we played our little games- we were always good at that- to exploit and benefit from the Chola- Pandya rivalry.

The same love-hate relationship continues to this day. India was the first country to provide flood relief, in the on-going tragedy in Sri Lanka!

I mean….Jaffna Tamils, are all about studying. It’s a way to get out of their caste structures. So, they study like hell to show their worth. They study unnecessarily, out of context, and then go mad when in spite of the study, job creation doesn’t match up.

They are like the Wahhabis with procreation, with nothing in between on earth to give meaning to the procreation. And the procreated are meant to be tortured on earth for the after-life phenomenon.

All Tamils had to do was to learn a bit of Sinhalese so they could have gotten jobs in the South. But, No! They felt too superior for that, and closed themselves in within their own niches, thus infuriating struggling and suffering Sinhalese masses.

            Hexar,

Tamil was/is also official language. But logistics proved that Sinhala was imperative for the traditional Sinhala south. Tamils should have thus learned Sinhalese. If Sinhalese went to the North, they would have learned Tamil. What reason would e.g. the capital city, Colombo, have needed to administer services to the masses in Tamil, when the south was mostly Sinhalese? Was it to bring more and more Tamils from the North to occupy Sinhala places. Now isn’t that a singularly selfish ideology?

Caste structure is a key issue in understanding the Jaffna society, and their need to burst forth from Jaffna without integration and assimilation with others. Hardly a stereotype, but the obvious reality of Northern society.

              Ramona,

Tamil is an official language because India pressured the government to do so, NOT because of the generosity of GoSL. Although Tamil is implemented well in some areas, it is horribly implemented in the public area (I wonder how many Sinhalese government workers speak Tamil. I’ve heard finding a Tamil speaking officer in the wellawatte area is near impossible). This is despite being an official language for over 30 years! And I don’t know what you’re talking about, many, many Tamils in the south speak Sinhalese. How else would they survive? And btw, I’ve heard clueless Sinhalese visit the south and say “why don’t they speak more Sinhalese here?”.

This is why we are in this mess.

The Tamils will push for a federal solution where the Tamil language is the medium of administration. This reality you need to come to terms with whether you like it or not. This is because you Sinhala arrogantly and myopically destroyed the possibility of building a just unitary state!

In Tamil Nadu the Tamils refused to learn Hindi the Indian National language while every other state in India promote Hindi as the common language. Get your facts right. Hindi is not the national language of India. India has more than 26 national languages and Hindi as well as Tamil Bengali Telugu, Punjabi ETC are all national languages of India.
India has two official languages Hindi and English and most non Hindi speaking states use English as the official language and not Hindi. However each state has its own official language and conducts its business in this language and only use either Hindi or English when dealing with the centre.
It is only people in the north and central parts of India are fluent in Hindi as their languages are very similar to Hindi. However in the South not only in Tamil Nadu but also in Kerala and most of Karnataka or Andhra ( other than Bangalore and Hyderabad) people do not understand Hindi. Even in many parts of rural non Hindi speaking North India many people do not understand Hindi.
What you call Hindi or Hindustani is in reality a mixture of many dialects and languages. Standard Hindi is the Khariboli the vernacular of Delhi area and only around 258 million people speak this language as their mother tongue now. Most speak various dialects like Bhojpuri Mathili, Awadhi, Hariyanavi Etc that are in reality languages in their own right but now classified as dialects of Hindi.
It was not only in Tamil Nadu but there was also wide spread resistance to Hindi as an official language from Andhra Pradesh , Maharashtra West Bengal Karnataka.
The southern parts of India and western Maharashtra are now the most developed due to English and not Hindi. The so called Hindi speaking belt and states in the central and northern plains are the most backward caste ridden parts of India, where the standard of life is far below sub Saharan Africa

“All Tamils had to do was to learn a bit of Sinhalese”

When we live in other countries we should learn to speak their languages but when we live in our traditional Tamil homeland in the NE of Sri Lanka why should we learn to speak a foreign (Sinhala) language which does not add any value to us?

English is an important universal/International language spoken/understood in most parts of the world. Today everybody need English. Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims strive hard to learn English because they also consider it as a prestige to speak in English. If you look at the number of International schools popping up in Sri Lanka, more than 90% of the students are locals, WHY? Every Sri Lankan will learn English if he/she can afford.

Tamil language, the lingua franco of the Tamils, is not only a classical language but also one of the five oldest living languages of the world. Tamil is also a language spoken in several parts of the world from West to East (India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, as well as in smaller communities in the Middle-East, South Africa, Europe and North America) by around 80 million people.

Sinhala is ONLY spoken in some parts of Sri Lanka (not the whole country) by 70% of the Sri Lankan population (Sinhalese). In Sri Lanka, the Majority language in the South, West and Central is Sinhala but in the world, Sinhala is a minority language not known to many (somewhat similar to a tribal language).

When SWRD tried to replace the English language with ‘Sinhala Only’ to gather some cheap Sinhala votes, he did not realize that there was another superior language (Tamil) spoken in one third part of the country (North & East). The Tamils refused to learn Sinhala because it was forced on to them. Otherwise they would have learned and mastered the Sinhala language, like Sir Mutthukumaraswamy who translated and saved so many centuries’ old Sinhala literatures. How will the Tamils accept a good for nothing language (only spoken in some parts of Sri Lanka) as their official language?

For the people in the North and East (Tamils & Muslims), Sinhala is an alien language, never spoken in their areas and not a requirement at all unless otherwise they need to go to the South for employment. Why should the people in the Tamil speaking North & East learn Sinhala? What is the advantage of learning a language that is good for nothing?

      • 5
        15

Oh no….we only ask the Tamils to learn Sinhalese when they come to the South. And it’s purportless to push a separatist agenda – too many of your people are living in prosperity in the South at this time. If it was such a bad situation, the Tamils would have gone to Tamil Nadu. Face it: The Sinhalese treat you better than the Tamil Naduians.

The fact that Tamil is an ancient language,is that it didn’t evolve much though the millennia, did it? Other languages are progressive.

this is singapore LKY : None were Brahmin but Vellala.
Former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew once said:
In terms of numbers, the Ceylonese, like the Eurasians, are among the smallest of our various communities. Yet in terms of achievements and contributions to the growth and development of the modern Singapore and Malaysia they have done more than warranted by their numbers. In the early days of Malaysia’s and Singapore’s history the civil service and the professions were manned by a good number of Ceylonese. Even today the Ceylonese community continues to play a prominent role in these and other fields of civil life.
For example in Singapore, today, the Speaker of Parliament is a Ceylonese. So is our High Commissioner in Great Britain. So is our Foreign Minister. In the Judiciary, in the civil service, in the university, in the medical Service and in the professions they continue to make substantial contributions out of all proportion to their numbers. They are there not because they are members of a minority community but on the basis of merit.
The point is that the Ceylonese are holding their own in open competition with communities far larger than them. They have asked for no special favour or consideration as a minority. What they have asked for – and quite rightly – is that they should be judged on their merits and that they be allowed to compete with all other citizens fairly and without discrimination. This, as far as the Singapore government is concerned, is what is best for all of us. I believe that the future belongs to that society which acknowledges and rewards ability, drive and high performance without regard to race, language or religion.

                take_that :

Oh no said in dismay)…….it’s not about what 1 out of 100,000 do, but how a whole society relates to each other. Sinhalese do not place their people in caste structures (if they do to some extent, it is what they learned from their Hindu neighbours…..and it is of trade leagues in geographical areas, amongst the Sinhalese, and not the enslavement of humans in one village as with the Hindus.

For every one of your Khrishnan billionaires, are 100,000 Dalits estate workers in places like Malaysia, sweeping the streets like crows. What a sorrowful thing it is to see that of other human beings. 12 million Dalits in Tamil Nadu itself, is something to look and cross ourselves with the sign of the cross, at the sight of the obvious evil inflicted upon others (nowadays I say Buddha’s Vandanna in sorrow for those souls).

Even at this point are you speaking about castist racism, and getting a high on it. It is something you Tamils find impossible to contain.

btw, Krishnan’s wife is Thai Buddhist…hence the son being a Theravada monk.

Krishnan himself is a Buddhist and his 2nd wife is French perhaps mahayana buddhist like most french.

I do not believe in the existence of God but I follow certain philosophies that suit me. It does not trouble anybody but i dislike god people because they are crooks or they are poor and try to find recourse via religion – generally school teachers who are good at crowd control- that is what you are trying.

The son of the business tycoon has eliminated the materialistic pleasures and went on to lead a life with very basic needs. He did his schooling in UK and can speak 8 different languages. He has two sisters. Growing up in UK made him open to new and different cultures and that is how he was drawn to Buddhism.

My foot!!! The greatest joke of the day, did you eat a lot of Kavum today???

From when was that??? Was it after 1948 February???

Did your grandmother tell you this as a bed time story to put you to sleep?
What else did she tell you?

          Didn’t she tell you that:

Once upon a time in India, some convicted criminals were exiled out of the country.

Due to a heavy Strom in the Bay of Bengal, their boat drifted for days and finally by chance, it landed in an Island where people (Tamils) were already living.

These kallathoni criminals led by their chief known as Vijay landed without any permission from those people, attacked and killed those people, took their princess and their whole country.

Even today they are continuing to attack them and forcefully occupying their native lands.

The fate of the Tamil Community after (07) years remains pathetic after Prabakaran/LTTE and the Catholic church had sacrificed the Tamil youth and children in a senseless war in order to promote their hidden agenda.

Finally ended empty handed & Tamil lives destroyed and the tamil society in total disarray.
Tamils funded tamils to get their future generations destroyed.
This is how sad it is today.

/It is time that we get to the ground of Eelam and understand what is exactly needed. Today, economically weaken society yet they lack of political leadership who can lead them from front. It is time we use our efforts to mobilize the people on the ground to rebuild their lives through economically, then physically and politically. /

I wonder why the government is even allowing this man to enter SL?

        what a stupid statement!
How come these pro terrorists all say about Tamil genocide, ethnic cleansing etc. while they are all living to post fake war crimes. Wouldn’t you ask how come they escaped such atrocities? From their replies I can see these are all fake accusations. And most are diaspora who were not even living in SL!
By the way, how did you escape Tamil slaughter, genocide and ethnic cleansing?

          Eusense,
          “what a stupid statement!”
You are getting jittery and stupid with the phases of the moon.
How do you hold a moonbeam??

“How come these pro terrorists all say about Tamil genocide, ethnic cleansing etc. while they are all living to post fake war crimes.”

There is no fake war crimes. We are aware of Fallujah and some who did it are committing suicide (NGO’s had no answer so they rammed it).
Fallujah it was clean compared to you being the beast of beast in a no fire zone. To be answerable is called `forces of government` and if not answerable the government is `nucleus of evil`.
We will get at this evil at the appropriate time is the vision.Geopolitics dictates it like 9/11 you had it. Now good friday is nearing you stupid Essence. Samsara come closer!!

” Wouldn’t you ask how come they escaped such atrocities?”

most tamils from Colombo left with language issue back in 68. Some left in 83 via colombo- the burning of homes looting and burning humans alive- I witnessed it in full view- but what I can not digest is JT’s took the opportunity to flee same as sinha-le is upto – italy to germany because Uk is full.

“By the way, how did you escape Tamil slaughter, genocide and ethnic cleansing? “

i never escaped from anywhere I am a nomad and do not change how others live because it is them not i while you are not and are afraid of taking a stroll in a californian park for fear of being shot like a stupid wog!
