The Instrumentalization Of Islamophobia – Provoking Islamist Terrorism: Who Benefits?

By Dayan Jayatilleka –

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

The recent spate of attacks on Muslims is the latest manifestation of Islamophobia in Sri Lanka. Such violence cannot but have the effect of radicalizing Muslim youth and marginalizing Muslim moderates. We have come one step closer to the emergence of Islamist terrorism in Sri Lanka.

So far we have experienced a ghastly increase in Islamic religious fundamentalism within the Muslim community, especially but not exclusively in the East.  However, there is a vital difference between Islamic fundamentalism and Islamist terrorism.

Not all Muslims are religious fundamentalists. There is also a difference between Islamic radicalism (e.g. Hezbollah, Hamas) and Islamic fundamentalism (e.g. Wahhabis). The latter is far more regressive and dangerous than the former, which has an emancipatory content. Religious fundamentalism and religious radicalism are not armed and violent, except verbally so in some cases. Terrorism is. Terrorists are Islamist, not Islamic. Islamism is their ideology, not the religion they practice. All Islamist terrorists are Islamic fundamentalists but not all Islamic fundamentalists are Islamist terrorists. Religious fundamentalism harms only the Muslim community itself, but not other communities nor the State.

If and when Islamic religious fundamentalism spawns Islamist armed extremism it will hurt other communities and the state. Nothing is more likely to generate Islamist terrorism on this island than the news, the sight and the emotions of Sinhala mobs, sometimes with Buddhist monks in their ranks, attacking Muslims.

The Sinhala racists made the same mistake with the Tamils. Mob violence was visited upon the Tamils in 1956, 1958, 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1983. The Tamil Tigers were formed in 1976, with Prabhakaran taking over as Chairman in 1978. The vast expansion of Tamil terrorism, as distinct from the commencement of Tamil armed insurgency—not all insurgencies are terrorist– followed Black July 1983.

The Sinhala racists attacked the Tamils to “put them in their place” and because they could, with some degree of impunity, since they were the majority. The gamble failed. It is true that the Tamils, by resorting terrorism, lost the civil war and the South won, but the Tamil issue has been internationalized to a point that is irreversible. So the visiting of mob violence upon the Tamils in 1958, 1977 and 1983 did not have the desired result and indeed achieved its opposite.

The story is being repeated with the Muslims. Contrary to liberal myth, contemporary Islamophobia did not commence with the BBS in 2012. Contemporary Islamophobia was the twin of contemporary Christianophobia. It started with the phenomenon of Rev Soma Thero, his sermons on TV, the correct discontinuation of them by the ITN, the switch of Rev Soma to the TNL, and the Rev Soma versus MHM Ashraff debate on television. Among Mr. Ashraff’s transgressions in the eyes of Rev Soma was that he had penned a (very respectful and celebratory) poem on Lord Buddha.

The ideological and political weaponization of Ven. Soma’s message and legacy by Champika Ranawaka after the Thero’s sudden demise through medical misadventure, was the quantum leap in Islamophobia. It was in the second term of the Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga administration, and against that administration, that Sinhala Buddhist fundamentalism raised its head.

There was a spate of attacks on Christian churches, mainly but not only evangelical. X’mas 2003 had to be celebrated with armed police standing outside—and some sitting inside—churches, including mainline Catholic ones, such as the church which I visited.

Sinhala Buddhist fundamentalism developed a militant offshoot, called the National Movement against Terrorism, which expressed itself on issues other than that of terrorism. While that militant offshoot was not itself violent, there were other shadowy outfits with names like the Theraputthabhaya Balakaaya and the Mahasona Balakaaya (not to be confused with the anti-Tiger covert operations unit within the armed forces, which came later) and which used to send out death threats. The Shah Rukh Khan concert was denounced because it was scheduled on the same day as the first death anniversary of the demise of Rev Soma. A hand grenade was thrown and an innocent died, while the daughter of the highly efficient and respected OIC of the Kirilapone police station was seriously wounded. The killer was never caught. That was in 2004.

Champika Ranawaka pushed for the so-called Anti-Conversion Bill in 2005, well before the Presidential election.  At a discussion in the US Senate building in Autumn 2005 (on which occasion I was lucky enough to run into and speak with Sen. Edward Kennedy), I was informed by a top staffer to an important Senator, that there had been an overcrowded meeting of Senators from both the Republicans and the Democrats, the biggest ever on Sri Lanka, to call for action against Sri Lanka on the issue of the Anti-Conversion Bill. As usual, the Sinhala Buddhist chauvinists who had picked on the small Evangelical community in Sri Lanka because it as tiny and could be bullied, failed to understand its huge clout in the world’s strongest superpower!

It is none other than Mahinda Rajapaksa, shortly upon election as President, who vetoed the Anti-Conversion Bill, and put a stop, temporarily, to the anti-Christian surge and saved Sri Lanka from full-on American hostility when we were fighting the war.

It was in the immediate aftermath of the war that a fresh wave of Islamophobia commenced. That was over Digavapi and was driven by Champika Ranawaka. His new line in Government was that ‘the Sinhalese and Tamils fought each other but it was the Muslims who have gained ground and are the new threat.’

This new thrust of Islamophobia was further radicalized in 2012, not only with the emergence of the BBS but also with a more virulent manifestation calling itself “Dolahe Karalla” (the Revolt of 2012) , which had logos of swords and other deadly weapons. Soon, the social media was filled with hate speech directed against Muslims, especially women, even in offices. Threats of rape and killing were made, sometimes with the photographs of those making the threats.

When Dinesh Gunawardena and Wimal Weerawansa urged in Cabinet that the inaugural meeting of the BBS in Maharagama be banned, and President Rajapaksa was nodding in agreement, it was Champika Ranawaka who argued vehemently against it, warned that there would be a violent backlash, and threatened to walk out and join the rally. He prevailed. The BBS held its rally with bodyguards dressed in black, looking every bit like a para-military. Champika Ranawaka was a distinguished guest.

The same reversal happened after Aluthgama, when President Rajapaksa, on a flight from Japan, ordered the arrest of Rev Gnanasara. Champika lobbied the defense circles he had become acquainted with during the war years, and struck the same note that there would be a Sinhala Buddhist backlash were the BBS boss arrested. The idea was dropped.

During the Presidential election campaign of December 2014, a tape surfaced, with video and audio, which was aired on television and has never been denied by the person in it, namely Minister Rajitha Senaratne. He was in conversation, allegedly along with his son, in which he marvels at the Satanic duplicity of Champika Ranawaka: “First he blocked any post war reconciliation with the Tamils by opposing the implementation of the 13th amendment while in Cabinet, then he picked on the Muslims and drove them away, and having thus split the minorities from Mahinda, he then revolted against Mahinda and split some Sinhala Buddhist votes away. What a plan! Evidently this plan had been in operation since 2010 or 2011! What a guy! I didn’t know this stuff till recently!” he said, in Sinhala.

The next phenomenon was that of the “Sinha-LEY” (Sinhala Blood), a few years back. Then came the attack on the UN safe house of the Rohingya refugees last year.

Now comes the Ampara and Kandy attacks. The timing is amazing, as is the answer to the crucial question “Cui Bono?”, “Who benefits?” Mahinda Rajapaksa has just beaten both UNP and SLFP and pretty much swept the board at the local elections. He has won back some Muslim votes and his supporters have even won Beruwela which has a Muslim majority. He certainly does not benefit from attacks on Muslims.

Meanwhile the government has been defeated and is clinging to the hope that a solid bloc of minority votes can be counted up at future elections, most importantly, late next year. Ranil Wickremesinghe is on the ropes with an imminent ‘No Confidence’ motion. And “Hey presto!’ the violent Islamophobic attacks act as a giant eraser, switching the discourse, and making the political threat go away at least for the moment.

I would not be surprised if there are attacks on Catholics too, given that the Sinhala Catholics swung back to Mahinda at the recent election.

More attacks on Muslims could eventually trigger Islamist terrorism by youths armed, trained and tested in combat on foreign battlefields, returning home, and perfectly capable of  blowing themselves up in the hope of a fast-track to Heaven. This will certainly not benefit the Muslim community. Nor will it benefit the Sinhala majority because the almost inevitable Black July 83 type reaction would (a) drive the Muslims into the arms of the latently separatist Tamils, while (b) making us lose our old friends such as Pakistan and (c) generating an economic response (migrant labor markets) from within the billion strong global Islamic community.

Provoking the emergence of Islamist terrorism would however, help a Government that is in crisis to impose harshly authoritarian measures and push through a new Constitution by a referendum, sell off national assets to the Indians in the hope of securing their military umbrella for entrenchment in office, and even have a stab at postponing elections. Above all it will make way for a militarist strongman and his Sinhala Mephistopheles, the Godfather of Islamophobia, to seize power from within the Government, at first using the President as a human shield and then marginalizing him.

Whatever Dayan says, this is all created by the Rajapakshes. Even for the present situation, there is definitely a hidden Rajapakshe conspiracy. After winning the war against LTTE and after Mahinda Rajapakshe won the presidential election and the general election with a two third majority, it was Not Mahinda Rajapakshe but Gotabaya Rajapakshe, Basil Rajapakshe and Namal Rajapakshe who behaved like they were the sole owners of the country, these three took all the powers into their hands and Mahinda Rajapakshe became a victim and finally lost the election. More than Basil and Namal, it was Gotabaya who made Mahinda unpopular among the minorities. After the war ended, Gotabaya did not allow his brother Mahinda to solve the National problem, instead of taking a moderate path, he selected the option of following the path of a few Sinhala-Buddhist Ultra-Nationalist Racists and Pseudo-Patriots, thinking that by whipping up Ultra-Nationalism and Sinhala Patriotism among the majority Sinhala-Buddhists, and by threatening and further suppressing the Minorities (Tamils and Muslims) he can rule the country for ever as the hero of the Majority (Sinhala-Buddhists). He used the armed forces in the North to control the civilians (a military rule). He created the grease devils and then the BBS to threaten and suppress the Muslims (BBS is a creation of Gotabaya). He used white vans to abduct and disappear those who acted against the government. Even though Basil and Namal were also culprits, the main person who made Mahinda Rajapakshe lose the election (by losing the minorities) was none other than Gotabaya Rajapakshe. Most of the members in the joint opposition also know very well that Gotabaya is a dictator. Now, if he contest the next Presidential election, not a single minority (Tamils, Muslims & Christians) will vote for him and the Sinhala-Buddhists are divided. He can never win the election. It is only Dayan’s dream and his dream will never come true.

Dayan himself an Islamophobe is hurling too much accusations using terms inflammatory “fundamentalism” and “terrorism” against the Muslims. May be he doesn’t know how terrorism born in Sri-lanka…… the Govi rule has brought everything evil to this land. Including terrorism. Dayan’s so called accusation of Muslims being religious is peaceful compared to the violence of Sinhala Only propounded by the continuous Govigama rule for 70 years.

Dear Dayan, do not try to distort the situation in order to make damage control. One who will benefit from these is Mahinda Rajapakse and no one else. There is strong suspicion that a foreign hand which wants him to come to power is behind this. Please refer to two recent incidents. Firstly appointment of a new ambassador to SL by China, where the usual practice of a career diplomat was not adhered to, and a person from Chinese intelligence agency was sent. The first thing he did was to meet Mahinda and Gotabhaya. Secondly return to the country by Gotabbhaya from USA where he was supposed to seek legal opinion about relinquishing his US citizenship. Timing of these attacks after his arrival may have some connection..

I have not read the article but the title itself is amplifying that Dayan is attempting to soften the impact of the Sinhala Buddhist attack on the Muslims. I am using the term”Sinhala Buddhists” encapsulating all of the Sinhala Buddhists because we Tamils were branded as terrorists and separatists as a whole!

This low level fellow Dayan is an unprincipled imbecile computable to no other!

We all condemn the attacks on Muslims as much as we do on any other community.

But read the article.. Dayan is correct in his analysis.

And do NOT forget the 1983 riots when the UNP government turned a blind eye whilst our Tamil people were attacked. History is repeating itself. Clear as crystal

            Words,

I am a Tamil and know all about the effect of the Sinhala Buddhist brutality; please save your words.

Dayan cannot absolve himself from the burden of guilt that he too has been pandering to the very phenomenon that attacked the Muslims! He did this consciously in whipping up popularist sentiments in the hope to bring back MR! He knows the score that chauvinism of any shape cannot controlled once out of the bag so to speak.

It it was a Sinhala buddhist they understand how they have been cornered by Tamils, politicians, christians and muslims. Belive me the gang who robbed banks are mostly anglicans and DJ too.

Dayan, the beneficiaries of Sinhala violence have always been the Sinhalese. The cycle happens repeatedly. Sinhalese pogroms (with government support & impunity in the courts), followed by resistance and then the world flocks to the Sri Lankan government because it is a state actor. If Islamic radicalism rears its ugly head then Sri Lanka will be a bona fide partner in the war against terror, and benefit from more state-to-state cooperation. The genocide of non-sinhala nations or peoples in Sri Lanka is a result of state sponsored Sinhala violence and the international community continuously ‘engaging’ with the Sinhala state to crush any dissent by the non-sinhala peoples. Once again, the Sinhalese are burning shops and killing civilians with impunity and if radicalism takes hold the Sinhalese will be the winners. Something you understand very well.

  • 10

The Sinhalese have always been losers. That is the problem. And modayas as well. The voting public does not benefit from violence, it never has.

As usual Dayan has written and excellent article. I can believe what he says.

I agree with your prediction that this could escalate, and become yet another ethnic war, with extremism taking over both sides, which usually ends in death and violence, but you seem to give the Rajapaksa’s a free pass, blaming everyone else but the man who was president during the terrible event at Aluthgama. Why did his side kick brother open the BBS offices, if they were angry with those racists pretending to be good Buddhists? Why didn’t the Rajapaksas loudly condemn the anti Muslim campaign, the attack on Muslim shops, and arrest anyone attacking shops and Mosques? In fact they talked the owner of NoLimit out of filing charges against those scumbags who attacked their store.
Why did the Rajapaksas allow the saffron robed terrorist from Myanmar,
Wirathu, to step into our shores?

There are plenty of questions about the Rajapaksas being complicit in the anti Muslim campaign going on Dayan, but you ignore them conveniently.

What a load of rubbish this man is writing in here.
I was never a fan of Champika R and finds a racist.

But., it looks like CR had so much power in the MA-RA regime more than GO-RA to allow BBS have the Maharagama show ?

We all know that BBS got a few million new Headquarters and none other than killer Gota was the chief guest.

Gnanasara was going with military escorts with dozens of uniformed PSD as bodyguards and now tell Champika was the man to handle the PSD and Gota’s itinerary as well?

Wasnt that guy Gammanpila who was the deputy of Champika Ranawaka all these years until a week before the 2015 Prez Election did approve this racism?

Dayan., Please do not for this low level. seriously man…. you are the son of that illustrated scribe of yesteryear . Mervyn,.

The article only exposes Dayan Jayatillaka’s bigotry. He washes Champika’s linen but wears his dirty cloths.
Dayan is yet again selective. He tells us ~ “………..Mob violence was visited upon the Tamils in 1956, 1958, 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1983. The Tamil Tigers were formed in 1976, with Prabhakaran taking over as Chairman in 1978………….”.
Dayan never mentions that he was in EPRLF – another Tamil liberation movement. Why did he join and why did he leave and join the other side?
Dayan talks about Islamic Fundamentalism but not Buddhist?

    • 2
      1

He said freedom fighters are not terrorist. So EPRLF shooting other fighters is freedom fighting, other fighters shooting EPRLF is terrorism.(just because Thero was minister in EPRLF non-elected government of North-East)

The vast expansion of Tamil terrorism, as distinct from the commencement of Tamil armed insurgency—not all insurgencies are terrorist
(You may have to recognize that this a spin doctor job from a Slap Party activist after Slap Party has created and launched the Kandy communal violence successfully.)

Dayan Jayathilake is an anglican who very often self aggrandise him to say he is in the ELite Club in the colombo. As many politicians do, they all Bash sinhalza buddhists. That is Christian way. Now, Muslims also have started it. Dayan thilakae used this opportunity to promote his personal agenda. Champika Ranawaka wqs JHU. So, they take shots at JHU. Rajitha Senarathne says he is buddhist but he is bashing buddhists because it works for his political agenda,. Even this recetn wave of muslim attacks a Sinhala man died. Either the muslims or politicians do not admist that. What ever the name, that man never had stepped into a muslim mosque. HE had never mixed with muslims too. That may be the reason why he was killed.

Many are thinking that this is the desired result Old Royal wanted to achieve with their LG campaign. But now they feel the bad timing of it. UNP did planned of bring out Sinhala opposition to any democracy constitutional change to restore Tamils right, just during the UNHRC sitting. They dated the election to that. They let Slap Party go ahead with its flame-ry and poisonous campaign not countered hoping to get their object fulfilled. But they both are now worrying the excess its acolytes did here can cause damage at UNHRC and their nightmare of UN Electric Chair can become real.

Not always your enemies’ enemy is your friend. But there are actions of that third hand can help almost always. This time we need not to counter Thero’s abundant false statements appearing here, with our evidences, as we do usually here.

He is trying to convince, especially the UNHRC that Yahapalanaya is not sincere in the promises it gave to UNHRC. If he have not proved, still he have managed to convince UNHRC that all what UNP doing in the name of reconciliation is pinching the Child and rocking the cradle. In the past we too tried to bring the Sinhala Chauvinistic duplicity of Yahapalanaya to external forces working on reconciliation; it faced hard shielding to penetrate. This time Thero has managed to thaw the shields because this explanations Yahapalanaya duplicity coming from another Sinhala Chauvinist. Thero the accomplice May 2009 in UNHRC, now, is the crown witness.

Thero has not offered any prove that this riot is being conducted by UNP. But he is still success in peeling Yahapalanaya mask to exposing their motive. He question of “who benefiting” and the answer it is “UNP” will not be countered by normal sense persons. A timely Ramapanam, will certainly destroy UNP.

As we said, we are not going engage here on extensive countering. But the ISIS fearing mongering needs an explanation. He used to advocate that Tamil Nadu going invade Lankawe, free Tamils and then going to have freed it from India. It worked very well with the crowd their IQ is below 79. Now, he is pitching on ISIS. No counter talks from us on doubt of its success within the Sinhala community. But let us ask question why ISIS is success in terrorizing in Europe or North America but not in Burma, China or Russia. Democratic nations have to engage in costly war to deter the ISIS type terror. So Russia was very success in controlling Chechenia. In Myanmar ISIS is not even able to show its head. China has not completely eradicated by has it under control. Sri Lankawe use different ware fare that is nowhere available in world. It has three armies, Rapist Army the official one, Paramilitary supporting one and independent Mob Army. Mob Army needs no arrest warrant or search warrant from the court to take action on any suspects. As it wipe out an entire neighboring towns for just three rowdies, this is many million times effective at zero coast in fighting ISIS than expensive CIA or Raw or M16…. So Thero’s campaign about ISIS will not create any new damage within the opinion of Sinhala Mahajan because they are self-aware of they know how to fight ISIS. So Muslims need not start a new concern that Thero is fear mongering of ISIS.

Would like to make some observations regarding Ven Soma Thero since DJ has commented about the Ven Thero. I have met Ven Thero in my work within the nationalist circles though lost touch later on. I can say he never advocated violence against anyone. He had a very large following as could be seen from the mammoth public participation at his funeral. Yet he never tried to take advantage of them by rousing them to street protests etc. which he could have done very easily. He stood against Tamil separatist terrorism. Yet he was very compassionate about the plight of ordinary people of all persuasions. The best example was in July 1983. Soon after the riots Ven Thero established a relief center to assist people affected by the riots and ran that center for a whole year up to August 1984 mainly providing dry food rations. He would have distributed thousands of kgs of dry food during that year. I can remember Bradman Weerakoon giving a special commendation for that effort. He was particularly saddened and concerned when MHM Ashroff took Mulims away from mainstream political parties to a narrow & a darker ethno religious alley. The Thero correctly enhanced public awareness of the destruction of Sinhala and Buddhist historical sites in the East. Many try to link that work to Islamophobia though destroying a country’s history is a crime. The Thero foresaw the consequences the nation would face and we are gradually entering into that tunnel.

We Buddhists should know facts. They can go to internet and browse independent platforms like Wikipedia and find out facts themselves. Here are few which I think useful.

The popular belief that Islam was spread through sword is incorrect. It is logical that religion is about goodness. When people see goodness in a religion they embrace it. It is the case fore Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. Islam is the more modern religion so logically maybe it has rectified more errors than older religions.

I can give an example, this may or may not be happening now but happened in colonial times, but thinking about it is a good exercise for our minds. We Buddhist fawn at Catholic church, saying they convert to Christianity the Buddhists by helping the poor with money, giving education to the children or giving jobs. These are good things. So it is obvious people get converted. As Buddhists if we are against it, are we Buddhist as Buddha taught us, or Buddhist of something else. We are prioritising our fundamentals before the well being of the poor.

Dayan has spoken the truth, any idiot including the Tamils and some Muslims who are always against Rajapase would not agree, Rajapakse has won a land slide victory shocking Sirisena Ana Ranil, who in his correct mind would believe Rajapase wants Muslims attacked. It is the Gonernment that got buckled and were hiding without facing the public that wants some chaos to protect themselves by putting the blame on the winning party. They achieved lot , bringing emergency to control and send fear phychosis then banning social media that make the government and Sirisena the Laughing stock. People are not fools they will respond well at the next election. Passing the new constitution with all restrictions imposed would be the death knell to both to government and country.
