The Buddhist Monk who was involved in a controversy created by state media regarding Dr Harsha de Silva resting his arm on the shoulder, was handed over to the police by Bodu Bala Sena, after being caught drunk in a office at Dematagoda with a friend.
The monk has been identified as Kirindiwela Piyaratana and was taken to the BBS headquarters by a group of people. After an interview with him we handed him over to the Kirulapona Police, Chief Executive Officer of the Bodu Bala Sena Dilanthe Withanage told Colombo Telegraph.
According to Withanage the monk was in the army and a few years ago he resigned from the army and became a monk. His father was killed by the JVP during the 1989 insurrection causing him to take up UNP politics.

Sri Lanka is a State in gradual decline. The fact that we have incompetent police who allow mobs to carry out vigilante justice and the BBS serving as a police force is danger signs for any investor or tourist hoping to visit. Stay away for your own good! This nation already resembles Mugabe’s Zimbabwe.

You should be comparing current state of Sri Lanka to oil rich Islamic states that had gone through the so-called Arab spring. You should compare mob justice Muslim Brotherhood is offering to Coptic Christians in Egypt now to all that BBS had done.
Mugabe’s Zimbabwe is a paradise when compared to Muslim Democracies of the Arab spring.

I am no Muslim AKA Lester,
To the puerile mind everything is connected to Muslims. To other decent human beings there is an emerging social problem. The rapid decline of values manifest in the visible breakdown of the discipline among the monks.
Now I wonder how you can address the issue by bashing Muslims? If the Muslim world is hell, and Mugabe’s Zimbabwe is better than the Muslim world, you would argue that we tolerate the moral decay?
Good for you. Your views will hasten the decay of Buddhism.

May be in Egypt they kill Christians, just like Israelis kill Palestinians, NATO kills Iraqis & Afghanis and Rakhine kill Rohingiya. Does that mean in Sri Lanka we have to kill each other too?
Sri Lanka is a democratic country whereas some middle eastern countries are not. So, you can’t compare both monarchy and democracy and tend to follow their set of rules. That’s shows your “brilliance”.
And, Sri Lanka is getting worse than any dictatorship countries in the world. Take the history and look through the countries those are/were under dictatorship. They have done pretty well to their own people. They are wealthy and well developed.
Concept of the Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka is “Apita Lamborghini, Umbalata Badagini”. In this democratic country where can you find justice against the power?
So, this incident also proves that Sri Lanka is loosing democracy.

I was unfortunate enough some time last year to unexpectedly meet a prominent BBS monk/organiser based in the Colombo South area. He waved Muslim census figures at me and told me very boldly that they were done with Christians and were targeting the Muslims next and all throughout his vicious and racist monologue he poured himself drinks from a bottle of alcohol and smoked cigarettes in addition to other illegal substances. After listening to his stories about the Christian churches he personally has led mobs to desecrate, I asked him if he doesn’t feel any fear when carrying out these activities. His response was shocking in the sense that his lack of fear and his impunity did not stem from the wise teachings of the enlightened one but from the “weapon” that he claims to carry around with him. Sigh. The blind shall continue to lead the blind.

Jordan Ebert,
“According to Withanage the monk was in the army and a few years ago he resigned from the army and became a monk. His father was killed by the JVP during the 1989 insurrection causing him to take up UNP politics.”
Thus particular monk needs counselling. Unfortunately, he is getting his counselling from the BBS monks, all of whom needs counselling to begin with.
So, we have a situation where the sick go to the sick for therapy- Sri Lanka Buddhist Style. Howevere, the real problem is with the state, refusing to maintain law and order wit these sick “Buddhist” monks.

I recall a prominent member (monk) of the BBS was convicted for drunken driving a few years ago.
I recently witnessed a buddhist(rather think he was not) monk giving the V sign to a female driver who refused to move her car from a legitimate parking maneuver all because he was in a hurry in a luxury SUV.

How callously have those fine Codes of Conduct by the
Prince of Peace from the Indian soil are prostituted in recent decades by a group of semi-literate ruffians in saffron – only
because they had the support of the ruling political party.
While we condemn in the strongest terms these scum from the
street wearing the robes of Buddhism nowadays, we must pay our
tribute to those pious Buddhists priests and teachers in the
earlier centuries who lived spartanly by the teachings of Gauthama, the Buddha. They won the admiration and respect of the people by the way they lived and went about their religious calling.

In Sri Lanka a drunken driver is breaking the law. Is a drunken monk guilty of breaking any law? If he is breaking the vinaya code the matter has to be handled by the Sangha Council not the Police.
BBS is headed by Gandasara who was charged with drunken driving. He broke the Vinaya Code plus the Law of the Land. He continues to be an unholy monk. BBS also claims to be the religous police to impose Buddhist law on the followers of other faiths. Waht a joke.

Monks should be monks….There here to show the public the correct pathway to live in!!! Not to participate in Political campaigns and get drunk!!! These monks are a disgrace to the Buddhism religion !!! Just look at him, looks so fake!!!

It is not only drink, the mans’s red lips and teeth show he has been consuming betel which is a mild intoxicant that dulls the mind and is forbidden.
Drunkenness is nothing new. There is a Jataka story about inebriated monks gathering outside Benares city gates and causing trouble.
Can you name the last monk who was disrobed? I can’t. Only the full registration and control of monks will end this sort of thing.

” A male in a drunken stupor is likely to make an ass out of himself in front of anyone around. Some activities he may participate in while in the stupor: starting fights, drunken boxing, drunk dialing, drunk texting, flirting, telling everybody he knows that he loves them, stumbling, staggering, stammering, slurring, drunken dancing, and anything else that is obnoxious and unreasonable.” (Urban Dictionary)
It looks like both Harsha and Kirindiwela Piyaratana were in a drunken stupor.So BBS has finally succeeded in sticking the label on the UNP also. Hope Sangahikaranaya of whatever the Nikaya would intervene.

HOW TO BE FREE FROM EGO (DON’T BE A SPIRITUAL DONKEY !)
========================
Idol of a goddess
Once a sculptor in a village made a beautiful idol of a goddess and thought of selling it at a good price in the city. So he loaded the idol on his donkey and started towards the city. When he was going through the village, the villagers bowed in front of the idol as it looked like a real goddess. Whichever street he crossed, a crowd would bow in front of the idol.
Thrilled with the newfound respect
But a strange thing happened. TheDonkey, which was carrying the idol, thought that he was special and that was the reason why people were bowing to him. He was thrilled with his newfound respect.
Angry people
Soon the sculptor returned after selling the idol. While he was crossing the village, the donkey stopped in the middle of the road, expecting a warm welcome. But nobody paid attention to him. The donkey felt insulted and started braying, so much so, that the villagers drove him away.
========================================
The same mistake, what the donkey did, is what most of us do. When we are on the divine path of self – realization, with God’s grace, a glow enters our demeanor and we stand out in the crowd. People respect such persons and often bow in respect. But we should realize that
people are bowing not to us but to that glimpse of God whom they realize resides within us. So the credit of this respect goes, solely to God, not to us. If we start taking the credit, we cross the thin line of demarcation and enter into an area of false ego, which God dislikes most.
The basic difference between material and devotional lifestyle is that, in material life the more we progress, the more ego we develop. In a devotional lifestyle, the more we progress, the more ego we shed.
=========================================
