The Naga Saga

By Grusha Andrews

Although there is a method to his madness, the editor of the Colombo Telegraph has a distinct “mad talent” for offering miscalculated visibility to people, elevating them to public personalities, or giving public personalities unwarranted political magnification.

His insinuation of Kumar Sangakkara as next presidential hopeful one year ago and his fun speculation of a Ranil-Patali President-PM mix via his Facebook account have both caused more than a political buzz in the Colombo circles. His personal comments on the importance of ending the Mahinda Rajapaksa era with two constitutional terms inspired an entire stinker chapter in a recent publication by Milinda Rajapaksha, the media spokesman for Presidential hopeful Gotabaya Rajapaksa. However the elevation of Nagananda Kodituwakku to his present state of dubious celebrity via Colombo Telegraph remains the mother of all cakes where the Colombo Telegraph editor’s editorial ‘aathal’ (Sinhala slang for ‘fun’) is concerned.

In an anti-climactic proclamation, Nagananda Kodituwakku has stated the following: “henceforth, consider Nagananda a mere activist who stands against the day light robberies of your public properties and sovereignties and not as a presidential candidate”. The reasons stated by Kodituwakku for this detour is as follows:

1. Before taking the shameless politicians to task, I must heal the blind public who do not see this world.

2. Out of that mentally blind public 60-70% will vote to elect the President of our country.

3. The political criminals understand this clearly and hence they have no respect for the rule of law

4. Therefore, I must make the stupid public realize this first and foremost.

The tragi-comedy of political and good governance activism which is literally hilarious in Sri Lanka is not genuinely funny. It is symptomatic of the caliber of the persons who are elevated by media ‘for fun’ taking the public for a ride.

Ascend Of Nagananda As A Public Figure

Kodituwakku surfaced, pretty much from nowhere as a voracious and a vociferous commentator in Colombo Telegraph articles appearing in his own name, spewing anti-corruption sentiments, tinged at times with extreme overtones. He displayed little elegance in vocabulary or measured restrain. It was actually a classic case of cyber “me-me-me”.  One of the distinct features of Nagananda’s presence in the social media is referring to himself in third person. He displayed a  disturbing tendency to refer to himself, not as “I” or “me” but as Nagananda. This trait called habitual illeism in psychiatry is a borderline psychological tendency. Historically and in present day a colorful plethora of personalities are habitual illeists. The readers would be entertained to take a glimpse: Julius Caesar’s Commentarii de Bello Gallico, Henry Adams, Charles de Gaulle, Bob Dole, Herman Cain, Narendra Modi, Mikhail Gorbachev, General Douglas MacArthur, Richard Nixon and Donald Trump.

Yes. Nagananda Kodituwakku should have set off some alarm bells a while ago.

Kodituwakku is the quintessential example of modern cyber media creating a force that even the force itself cannot fathom or handle.  He went on to author a number of Colombo Telegraph articles and became a lone protestor at the parliament square in London and endorsing the banning of the infamous book “Budunge Rasthiyaduwa” – mounting a racist high horse. Quite frankly, these symptoms  pointed towards a soft brand of affective and unstable demeanor characterized by berating the public, harsh wordings, calling the public stupid – all disturbing traits for a Presidential hopeful. His flight of thoughts and deed assumed a narcissistic and delusional life of its own and he escalated himself in to his own political climax of declaring Presidential hopes. Note: initially, there were very few citizens rallying around him in spite of some of the very valid points about justice he was raising. To the eternal credit of the editor of Colombo Telegraph he stopped profiling Kodituwakku in Colombo Telegraph following the declaration Presidential candidate dreams. One must be grateful for life’s small mercies.

Was It All Talk And No Intention?

No. Nagananda Kodituwakku probably has his heart in the right place initially. He had the courage to challenge the quasi- Chief Justice of the Rajapaksa regime Mohan Pieris. He challenged National list abuse and MPs duty free vehicle permit abuse.

However the error of this narrative is not so much the issues he was challenging. The error was in fact in his misguided and arrogant belief that the public was stupid and blind. Recently Kodituwakku came back to lime light piggy backing on Sugandhika Fernando, the controversial lawyer who, in a hall mark speech exposed the ugly underbelly of the judiciary. The video of the speech went viral and it fed the moral imagination of the “so-called- stupid” public escalating Kodituwakku’s political trajectory. This was perhaps a significant time in which the “stupid public” really felt in synch with Kodituwakku’s political and moral stance. But rather than addressing the opponents in a rational and just manner, both Kodituwakku and Fernando resorted to losing it in public reminiscent of President Sirisena losing his cashews. Sugandhika Fernando is no longer heard of.

Divorcing The Public

Can politicians, activists, lobbyists divorce the public – their ‘clients’ on the basis of their purported blindness or stupidity? The writer came across a hilarious short video by “Jana and Priya” where the patient presents with an arm pain. Upon hearing the presenting complaint, the doctor unilaterally describes all the intricate symptoms to the patients and say, “I will prescribe you some medicine”. The surprised patient asks “doctor how did you narrate all my symptoms one by one” The doctor says “Son, I have the same pain for ten years. No medicine works – wait, I will prescribe you some medicine”.

The crucial truth that Nagananda Kodituwakku and the self-righteous “activists” forget is that they are a sample from the population they sanctimoniously insult. The people and their leaders are as they both are. The second important thing that they have not learnt is that if doctors divorced their patients because the patients don’t heed advice, modern medicine will perish. If the teachers divorced the students because the students don’t heed their advice, education will perish. Like the doctor in the video clip, what is ailing the patient is also ailing the doctor. But the doctor will continue to prescribe treatment (ironic as it sounds). Emotional tenacity, emotional management and grit are probably the most predictive qualities of political (or any) success. Kodituwakku has self-immolated his haphazard and ego centric performance because he missed some crucial point about politics and the people. He should now dismount his high horse.

    Dear Grusha,
    .
We need somebody other than a member of the Rajapaksa family and Ranil Wickremasinghe as the next President, to be elected in 2020. Time is running out, to find a suitable guy.
    .
Nagananda would be an improvement on those mentioned above. You did Kumar Sangakkara a favour by holding the mirror up, so he could see himself. Actually you did that very effectively, and thanks for having it in Sinhalese as well. A Sangakkara who has heeded the warning, and has resolved to give up that second career of his, would also be better than the old codgers named above.
    .
Unless you suggest a possible candidate, what you are doing is meaningless.

My dear Sinhala_Man, Our time is running out. But that is insignificant when compared to the time left for our dear land. We have let China set one foot on our soil. That has infuriated India. (Subramanian Swamy’s visit to MR was a camouflage of RAW.)
      .
Unless we wake up and wake up soon, we are in for a rude shock.
      .
We need a new hand; a new outlook. But, we need a face versed in politics. The Office is not for someone to learn on the job.
      .
Sri Lanka missed the bus in 2009. MR was too egocentric not to have grasped it.
      .
The litmus test for a suitable candidate would be his/her perception of the national wound.
      .
Let us not just keep saying that we are all Sri Lankans. Let us make a genuine effort for each and everyone of us to feel that we are all sons of the soil.
      .
I have a few simple suggestions that WOULD do the trick. Any takers?

        Dear old codger,
        .
I was indeed conscious of my good friend who goes by the same name when I typed that, but you were not meant to be one of those doing so much damage to our society.

          Dear SM,
No offence taken. You know I take a dig when an opportunity appears.
However, I do have reservations about this Naga, honest though he may be (or not?). He seems a bit one-dimensional. We don’t know what he thinks about , for example, what do do with outfits such as Sri Lankan Airlines. What are his ideas on economics/ Is he a statist dinosaur? Subsidies? What did he say about SAITM? Does he think women should not drink?

            Thanks, dear old codger,
            .
I’ve just sen your comment after posting something myself at the bottom of the page. I agree that he is rather one dimensional; months ago I said myself that he doesn’t appear to have charisma, and may not have a sense of humour.
            .
None of that would matter, unless there are streaks of vindictiveness, and an inability to laugh at himself. I’m pretty sure that he will be overly serious. Provided he is sensitive to what the World now demands in terms of liberalism and doesn’t set about persecuting those whose outlook is different from his, I don’t think that we will have a major problem on our hands.
            .
He’s been living in England for some time now. No, I think that he will understand that he cannot impose Puritanism on all citizens. I’d expect him to continue being pretty austere in his own ways. Not such a bad thing, is it?

              Dear Nimal,
              .
Yes, you’ve got point. If we don’t get replies now we won’t get them when he’s President. On the other hand, this sort of thing happens all the time.
              .
Ego could be the problem. Whose ego? Yours or his?
In exactly a week we will know the results of the Maldives Presidential Elections. Exactly three weeks ago, I had a very brief chat with the sole opposition candidate, Soli. In Mt Lavinia. He’s a common candidate, but he’s not the guy who matters. The important guy is the former President, Anni Nasheed. I had a much longer chat with HIM. The present tyrant hasn’t allowed him to contest.
              .
Anni acknowledged the messages that I had sent him told me that they were very useful. I’ve sent him more stuff. No responses from him.
              .
His email address is not available but messages have to be sent via his website. My details have to be entered, then a catchpa.
              .
Why? Yameen can send him a million messages via a robot. End of email address.
              .
I don’t mind not hearing from him. I, personally am nothing: “They also serve who only stand and wait.”

I wanted to quote only these lines:
          .
“The old order changeth yielding place to new And God fulfills himself in many ways Lest one good custom should corrupt the world.”
          .

what about patali champika ramanayaka? He seems to be a honest bloke.Ranil might put him as the candidate if he finds through polling he will end up in a humiliating defeat.By putting up people other than himself ranil can hold on to the leadership.

        Dear Shankar,
        .
Patali Champika Ramanayaka is a clever man – no doubt about that. He’s a pretty good engineer, so he had the makings of a good Minister. There has been a good deal of sleaze about his private life, but that is his business.
        .
I don’t know these people, so I cannot really say what sort of President he will be. However, isn’t it true that most of his party politics has been with the Sinhala movement that doesn’t want to extend full Civil Rights to Tamil speakers.
        .
For me, any leader that I’d like to see must be one who recognises the Rights of of all Sri Lankans. So, I’m not very enthusiastic about him.

          Dear S.M.
“Patali Champika Ramanayaka is a clever man – no doubt about that. He’s a pretty good engineer, so he had the makings of a good Minister. “
About as far from the truth as one can get. He is clever at seizing opportunities. That explains his political trajectory, JVP / Sihala Urumaya/ UPFA and now UNP. On the way he managed to unseat that Thomian co-founder of the SU (forget his name now) on the grounds that he was a Christian.
His “engineering” ability is limited to big talk only. You probably remember the scam he pulled during the 2010 election, purportedly producing petrol from polythene. No self-respecting engineer would carry out such a charade.
A political charlatan in every respect.

From what I know, and what Nagananda wants to do is to “Expose” and “Inform” the public that the present system of “Decision Making” by the voters .i.e. divided and affiliated with political parties, without being conscious of what needs to be done in an election, that need to be meaningful and healthy to the country. He at times says: “If I become President, I will introduce “Benches” in Parliament instead of those “Comfortable Chairs”. That is and should not be an statement to be interpreted as his “Candidacy Claim” for the Presidency. We too have done that, in our school days, when asked to write an essay titled: “If I become the Prime Minister”. We need people of this caliber, who could even challenge the Judiciary, when that is going wrong . He makes it a “FORUM” to infuse, educate and create awareness among the voting population, who hitherto have become “SLAVES” of politicians and political parties. A “POLITICIAN” will dare do and say that; but it is a FACT and the TRUTH that has to be told by an “ACTIVIST”. So promoting such a person and giving space to such persons is in actual fact a SOCIAL NEED. For that no blame should be laid at the door step of the CT or any other media outlet ; but need the commendations and support of the general public. In that perspective, this writer has MISSED to note the MISSION of Nagananda and CT.

By the way you are yet to define your ideas of Integration, “ONE COUNTRY”, “ONE NATION”, “STATE”, “GOVERNMENT”, ………………….. If you can’t explain the above now, you can come back some other time when you yourself have satisfied with your understanding of the above.

Why are you scared of confronting ideas with ideas or causing clashes of ideas?

Nagananda K, understands and interprets the law correctly and has faulted the judiciary and the present bunch of politicians.
His exposure of the corrupt behaviour of politicians is shocking to many of them.
    He is sincere and uncorrupted.
He will make a good president.

What a boring article by Grusha Andrews, full of envy and hatred – didn’t bother reading the full drivel. This is the reason why good men do no stand up for Sri Lanka. There will always be a Grusha Andrews to pull you by your leg and criticize you. Sri Lanka is full of Grusha Andrews, just little men full of hate and envy!

Nagananda K did his duty as a citizen to raise his views against exponentially growing organised corruption by the ruling political class as well as State institutions like the Customs Dept – his former employer. He went one step more – and for that the public must thank him – he sued many, clearly at his personal cost, whom he charged as patently guilty. He was very much on track here. But these are inadequate features for one to be popularly elected as
a leader of a supreme order for a nation of over 22 million going through a giant socio-economic crisis bordering on national dis-integration. Similarly so that talented Cricketer Kumar Sangakkara whose claim to fame is only wielding the willow albeit with grace and aplomb to universal applause. I have heard it mentioned here the Lankan voter may well be fed on a regular diet of Punnakku in the choice of whom they chose as their leaders – notably in recent years. It is a shame, among our high political leaders in recent times we have had drug and human traffickers – widely approved by our Buddhist hierarchy, including Mahanayakas, as those suitable to lead the country. What a shame!! Sadly there seems to be hardly any supervisory mechanism preventing such dregs from manipulating themselves into high office.
Nagananda probably made his “big money” in the Customs Department – a haven for high corruption where few are innocent. The days of glorious Customs men like Max Caspersz and V.P. Vittachi – honourable men of reverent honesty – is long past. It was said a recent holder of the top job had a black income of Rs.3 million PER DAY. And he batted on, with blessings from the political leadership, for many years.
To make a long thing short, Nagananda is best as a one to raise his voice against public thievery.

      Dear Mr A.D.J. Perera,
      .
Nagananda Kodituwakku is firmly anti-corruption. On what basis are you imputing that he is the very opposite of that? Your logic seems to be that the Customs Department is “a haven for high corruption”. Nagananda was in Customs. Therefore he made “big money.” That syllogism is all wrong. Oh, dear, I’ll have to study my Aristotle again!
      .
You’ve been honest enough to use two words: “probably” and “few”. Then you do grant that “a few” are honest. Please, I’ve put in enough years of drudgery teaching the difference between “few” and “a few”. Why can’t Nagananda be one of the “few”? We seem to be getting back to the kindergarten.
      .
Everything I told you a couple of weeks ago was true. However, much as I would like to claim that I produced brilliant scholars of English in Maha Vidyalayas that would be stretching the truth a lot. There are explanations for most things, including my passable English, but you’ve not really probed.
      .
Please let’s stop living in the past; in worlds of make-believe. There are many things that I have revealed that must have surprised you. Why not probe? I’ll give honest answers.
      .
However, please don’t assume that Nagananda is a rogue just because his name is not “Caspersz”.
      .
Incidentally, since accuracy seems to important, before Ranil spent his mandatory six months in “Law College” he was in the “Law Faculty of Colombo University.” That is what he would boast about – being an advocate, and not a mere “proctor”. I’m not sure about this, but G.L. Peiris may already have been Professor.
      .
      I’d like your response, please.

I’m sorry if it looks as though I’m doing the very thing that I just said, in another comment, that we shouldn’t be doing: bickering among ourselves.
        .
What perturbed me was that you seemed to be saying something negative about Nagananda when there is no reason to suppose such speculation to have any basis. However, I appreciate the fact that you are backing him.

SL needs a Macron, a political novice with an education & integrity. So far, to my knowledge, such a person has not stepped forward but if Mr Kodithuwakku comes forward, in my opinion, he is the closest to a Macron. He has proved to be a tireless campaigner against injustice & corruption in the country & though his integrity is yet to be proven, he has my vote. In this case, I would go for the unknown angal than the known devil.

There is no reason why we can’t set about learning about Nagananda, so that we know enough about him to call him either a “known angel” or a “known devil” by the time Presidential elections come round. I have posed questions on this very subject here:

      .
      https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/will-sajiths-move-to-colombo-trigger-new-conflict-in-unp/
      .
where the same Mr A.D.J. Perera, as above, has told me this: “I am glad to hear you were a Maha Vidyalaya teacher. I have great respect for these schools, who have produced thousands of brilliant students – in English as well.”
      .
Very enlightened of Mr Perera who is a Colombian most impressed with “Ranil’s background”. I was expecting to get a personal message from him. This is the problem; we just don’t follow up. I feel that if you do follow up, you may find that I have said many things which add up to saying that the fault really lies with us smug speakers of English, as much as with the village yokel who knows little of the language.
      .
Mr Perera, Education is a shambles almost everywhere in the country. This article was written in my own name:
      .

I had given the link in one of those places, but nobody followed it up. I have even more to tell – if you indicate that you want to know.

        My friend, the Sinhala_Man

I am travelling for some weeks now and am unable to answer
somewhat fully. You come out to me as one of those Lankans from
a decent learned background wishing everyone well – and ready to do much to regain our earlier racial-social harmony.

I have nothing personal against Nagananda. But reading him and his efforts he prevents me from having too high an opinion of him and his legal acumen. Remember he paid Rs.100,000 to help Ravaya – a very high amount for a man dependent on his meagre wage.
He is better advised to polish his language, prose and diction to gain a reputation as a competent lawyer – a platform from which he can rise in the legal fraternity. If Wijedasa R can do it why not our well-meaning friend Nagananda.

I must agree with you “education is a shambles” – the cause for this, to a large measure, is pseudo-nationalism of the post-1950 era that replaced an English-centered education system with the vernacular and now both, to use your phrase, “in shambles”

Now even The Family (the Rajapakses that is) are trying to improve the quality of English and education – in general. While the sons of Mahinda R can converse fluently in English hundreds of thousands of students in the Hambantota District are poor in the language – the Kaduwa. Why?

Gurusha, it will be wise for you to get some reasonable input on your own writings, wordings and criticism. I totally agree with Nagananda in stating that majority Lankans are not only stupid they are selfish and jealous too.Now I may not be standing in elections but then again it does not stop me from saying so. You may be right about diplomacy where Hilary was scorched because of her uttering that “majority republicans are deplorable ” for which she later apologized(too late). But I will try putting your own facts in a different way.In Asian countries the doctors never give the bad news to the patient. If at all they may tell the family member but not the patient. But ethically (in western world) the patient has the right to know the diagnosis and it can be shared ONLY with their consent and not otherwise.. The bottom line is The public is in DENIAL( not the crooked politicians) and when confronted turns to anger. At the end not telling the diagnosis may be beneficial to others(family/doctor/hospital) but not to patient

Grusha, sorry to spell your name wrong the first time.

    Dear Grusha,

I respect you as a journalist with integrity and candour and voraciously read your articles.

However, in this piece, your critique of Nagananda seems like an attempt to “throw the baby out with the bathwater”. Instead, what you should have done is support the mission of Nagananda to educate punnakku eating masses that take part in savage monkey parades like “Janabalaya Kolambata” leading up to re-electing moronic politicians of Rajapakse-Ranil, M3 cult.

An after thought by me: I’ve also been saying some things here about this subject of needing to find a credible candidate:

    .
We really must stop finding fault with every suggestion that is made. Rohan Pallewatte is another name that has come up. I think that I first learnt of the existence of such a man form an article written by the tireless Dr W.A.Wijewardena, who keeps educating us about the Economy.
    .
Grusha, it was good that you exposed the unethical advertising that Kumar Sangakkara has been indulging in, but don’t you think that he could be our saviour if he does some serious re-thinking of what really matters in life? The potential is certainly there, he is known, and he’s the right age – about the same as Macron.
    .
What is so necessary is that we make our little contribution without expecting that our suggestion is the one that is finally seen as crucial. Ego is something that all of us humans appear to possess in great measure, however hard we try to camouflage it! At least I know that I’d like to feel that I’ve been clever – but it is a weakness we must strive to overcome.
    .
By the way, try to find out what’s happening in the Maldives: potentially rigged Presidential Elections ten days from now. The best man for the job, only 51 years old yet, is languishing in Colombo, not allowed to contest.
    .
Raj, the parallels may be more telling since we’re at similar stages of development.

    Dear Kossa,
    .
You have made this sweeping statement: “Nagananda is a fool, his knowledge is limited.”
    .
Is there anybody whose knowledge in not limited? Mind, I think that I know what you mean. His platform is limited to straight-forward “law and order”. I listened to what he said; you could look at the comments that I then made. He may not be at home in fashionable salons, discussing avant-garde art, or abstruse philosophy, or the latest theories regarding the origins of the cosmos. One of Grusha’s complaints is “He displayed little elegance in vocabulary or measured [restraint – typo there?].” But is that what we need, right now?
    .
We are faced with the twin evils of corruption and racism. There seems to be general agreement that Nagananda means business when it comes to corruption. I have heard no hint of racism in what he has been saying. It is not so very difficult to steer clear of racism if you have decided that you are not going to be coming out with dishonest statements to rouse the rabble.
    .
How much sophistication or subtlety do our politicians display in any case? How many would even understand the question? Am I not being rather crude in posing such questions myself? I have to because those opposing him appear to be pretty smug about their own superiority. Let me see what Kossa has to say before saying anything unnecessarily nasty myself.

GRusha Andreews: What is most important is not what you say. the safety and protection of the Indo-pacific OCean Reigion. So, base your rhetoric on that. See what Malinda has written.

GRUSHA: You do not have to worry about Nagananda. SOc alled sinhala buddhist politicians are for Greed. both Maithripala sirisena and Rajapakses would sell anything in Sri lanka if they can come to power and stay in power. Only thing protestants have to do it give them some political donations. they divide the Sinhala buddhist vote and as it happened it during 2015 arab Spring, tey wioll fight out protestants can have their way. See how Ranil (Anglican), Ravi (Catholic/Evangelistt), Mahendran (anglican), MAlikS, KAbir. PAskaralingam group emptied the banks and stalled the cpuntry. So, have a strategy for the next five years. I think certain things are already in place.

Naga seems to attract more people for his postings on Facebook now than few months ago. Which shows he is finally getting his message to a certain extent. But Facebook likes or postings are not going win you votes to win the presidential election. So if some one can’t win the presidential election , though he is the most deserving candidate , he or she will not be able to change the system. So the aim should be to become the president. For that the presidential hopeful should be more tactful n be ready to accept other peoples follies till he becomes the President. Once he has power, yes he can start to change system from top. Without legitimate power , that person can’t do anything though he really wants to change the system for good. But the way naga’s single minded focus on attacking corruption it is doubted whether he can win votes in this country where majority can be bought over a packet of biriyani n bottle of arrack. Though I believe Naga will make a difference for good if he becomes the President, my concern is how he could win the votes.

Nagananda resembles a modaya in a village where the moda villagers consider intellectual but the actual intellectuals belittle him (for stupidity)

Is it true Nagananda was a customs officer until recently in Sri Lanka and he had problems there? Can someone enlighten us?

If Gotabaya can contest after renouncing his US citizenship for that matter any American should be able to do that. In every sense of the word Gotabaya is an aliean. Therefore let us open this to foreigners as well. There are enough retired experianced politicians world over to select from Barak Obama , Nicolos Zarkozy of france and Malcolm Turnbull of Australiya are some of them.

He said he will contest at the Presidential election as a candidate now says he won’t. What a loser!
