“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.” — Sun Tzu
Sri Lanka is facing one of the most unprecedented disasters in its history. Cyclone Ditwah has left a trail of destruction so extensive that it has shaken the very foundations of the nation. Lives have been lost, homes destroyed, livelihoods wiped out, and essential infrastructure reduced to rubble. Administrative systems, already fragile from years of inefficiency, corruption, and political instability, have been almost entirely uprooted. Parents mourn their children, families have been displaced, farmers have lost their crops and herds, and the majority of businesses—especially small and medium enterprises that form the backbone of the economy—have collapsed.
When compared to past national crises—the 2004 Tsunami, the 2009 war, the 2016 floods, and the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic—Ditwah stands apart in its scale, depth, and human impact. The devastation is such that it is not the floodwaters alone that dominate the landscape; the country is awash in tears, despair, and uncertainty. Every corner of Sri Lanka bears the marks of this catastrophe, making it clear that the nation faces a challenge of historic proportions.
In times like these, the true measure of leadership is revealed. The real question is not merely the magnitude of the disaster, but how those in positions of power respond when their people are at their most vulnerable. It is in this context that the response of the Government of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) must be examined.
What the AKD Government Is Doing
Disasters arrive unannounced, indifferent to politics, social status, or geography. They shatter lives, destroy homes, and leave communities vulnerable for years. Yet, the test of leadership is not in avoiding disaster—it is in how a government mobilizes to protect its citizens and restore hope. From the very first hour of Cyclone Ditwah, the AKD government demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the people and the country.
Rescue operations were launched immediately, with military, police, health workers, and trained volunteers deployed to the hardest-hit areas. Emergency shelters were opened, and essential relief supplies—food, water, medicines, and temporary housing—were distributed without delay. Field hospitals were set up to cater to the injured and vulnerable, while rapid-response teams worked tirelessly to reopen critical transport routes.
Remarkably, all of this was achieved within the strict economic confines of the IMF framework and amidst the lingering effects of prior mismanagement and political turbulence. The AKD government did not use bureaucracy as an excuse; it acted decisively and transparently, prioritizing service over self-interest. Leadership, in this crisis, has been defined not by statements or gestures, but by tangible actions that save lives and protect communities.
From small villages to major urban centers, people have felt the presence of the government. Unlike previous administrations, which often responded with delayed action or politicized relief, the AKD government has been visible, approachable, and compassionate. It has demonstrated that governance, when rooted in integrity and purpose, is not about power—it is about responsibility. The citizens of Sri Lanka, for the first time in decades, feel that their government is truly with them, not distant from them.
International Response and Cooperation
No country, regardless of its size or resources, can face a disaster of this magnitude alone. Even the wealthiest nations rely on coordinated international aid to manage destruction of this scale. Recognizing the urgency, Sri Lanka reached out to the global community, and the response has been extraordinary.
Countries including India, the UAE, the USA, the UK, Japan, China, Russia, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, along with numerous international organizations, mobilized swiftly. Aid arrived via large aircraft operating around the clock and ships docking at major ports, carrying essential supplies, medical equipment, emergency shelters, and food. For the first time, Sri Lanka witnessed air-lifted bridges, heavy-duty helicopters, field hospitals, electricity generators, and specialized rescue teams arriving simultaneously from multiple nations.
Highly trained foreign personnel joined local teams on the ground, assisting in clearing operations, rebuilding infrastructure, and restoring vital services. Their expertise, combined with resources from donor countries, ensured that food, medicine, and essential services would reach the most affected communities.
The inflow of international aid has been historic in scale and meticulously organized. Yet, the mere provision of aid is insufficient. The effectiveness of foreign assistance hinges on its transparent and efficient management. Here, the AKD government’s governance stands out. By demonstrating accountability, integrity, and discipline, it ensures that every dollar, every supply package, and every unit of aid reaches those who need it most. The global community’s confidence reflects the government’s credibility: in a country once plagued by corruption, Sri Lanka is now recognized as a nation where aid is deployed honestly and efficiently.
Sri Lanka Is Small — But the AKD Government Stands Large
Sri Lanka may be geographically small, but under President AKD, its government commands enormous moral, ethical, and administrative stature. The AKD government’s integrity has earned unprecedented trust from the international community, distinguishing it from any prior administration.
Foreign aid is not just a matter of dollars; it represents the sweat, savings, and sacrifices of ordinary citizens in donor countries. Donor nations, recognizing the transparency and accountability of the AKD government, have committed generously, confident that resources will be used appropriately. This level of international trust is unprecedented in Sri Lankan history and underscores the moral credibility of the current leadership.
Unlike the 2004 Tsunami period, when political elites often siphoned aid, today every packet of medicine, every dollar of support, and every essential supply reaches its intended recipients. This integrity reassures citizens that they made the right choice in electing the AKD government and restores public trust in governance. Sri Lanka, though small, now enjoys a stature in the international arena that far exceeds its size—rooted not in military might or economic power, but in honesty, leadership, and responsible governance.
The Sri Lankan Diaspora and Global Support
The role of the Sri Lankan Diaspora has been extraordinary. Communities across the globe, particularly in New Zealand, have mobilized both resources and expertise to support relief efforts. Individual contributions and organized initiatives have flowed into the country in unprecedented amounts, demonstrating compassion, unity, and a deep sense of national responsibility.
Major international partners such as the UK, the USA, and the IMF have contributed millions of dollars in aid, reflecting confidence in Sri Lanka’s governance and resilience. Within the country, citizens, businesses, religious institutions, and NGOs have mobilized with remarkable speed and generosity, contributing essential materials, funding, and support. Together, these efforts form a massive, coordinated, and effective national and international response—an embodiment of unity in the face of catastrophe.
The Opposition Disaster Cyclone
Yet, amid this unity and coordinated action, a human-made disaster continues to unfold: the Opposition Disaster Cyclone. From the very first hour of the Dithwa crisis, opposition parties have displayed a callous disregard for national suffering. Rather than supporting relief and reconstruction, they have focused on criticism, obstruction, and political gain.
The opposition magnifies minor errors, spreads misinformation, and politicizes grief—all while people are drowning in floodwaters and facing unimaginable loss. Their allegiance is to party politics and personal ambition, not to the people of Sri Lanka. In stark contrast, the AKD government, the international community, and civic organizations tirelessly work to save lives and rebuild the country.
Every act of obstruction and politicization by the opposition is an hour wasted for the people in need. Yet, the nation sees clearly: leadership is measured by action, compassion, and accountability—not by political rhetoric. The opposition’s behavior is morally, ethically, and historically condemnable.
Cyclone Ditwah may pass, leaving physical destruction behind, but the Opposition Disaster Cyclone seeks to leave permanent scars on national morale, public trust, and the country’s progress. However, history and the people’s judgment are clear: the Opposition Disaster Cyclone will never succeed. It will never claim power again because the citizens will not forgive those who exploited suffering for political gain.
Conclusion
The lessons of Cyclone Ditwah are profound. Disasters expose not only the vulnerabilities of infrastructure but also the character of leadership. In this trial by flood and storm, the AKD government has proven its integrity, courage, and commitment. It has been demonstrated that governance rooted in transparency, discipline, and compassion can withstand the harshest crises.
Simultaneously, the opposition has revealed its true nature—a political cyclone of obstruction and opportunism, devoid of concern for human suffering. The contrast could not be starker: one force builds and protects, the other seeks to divide and exploit.
Sri Lanka may be small in size, but under President AKD, it stands large in integrity, resilience, and global respect. Cyclone Ditwah may return; natural disasters will always test us. But the lesson is eternal: genuine leadership, unity, and integrity will always prevail, while opportunism and obstruction are destined to fail. The people and the nation will remember the courage and steadfastness of the AKD government as a defining moment in Sri Lanka’s history.

It is good to hear about the opposition political parties from a opposition political party for the past 30 years and remaining 30 years as an opposition militant group with the history of nearly the age of independence. This is a group which produced Weerawanse and Gammanpila. We now praise India, pakistan, USA, japan, China, and many other countries providing help this island which was the enemies of the same militant group when they advised to give up racism and religious extremism. the Tamil speaking community did not ask for anything other than equality and share of power where they live for many centuries. If all the Sinhalese political leaders including JVP should become more open about their past racism and religious extremism and acknowledge that yes we were wrong and we are prepared to share the power with Tamil speaking people. People, whether it is Sinhalese speaking or Tamil speaking the religions should function to unite people and not to divide people.

Yes Ditwah and NPP government happened. What does it prove?
‘Ditwah’ is only a name assigned to one of myriads of cyclones.

You said “the religions should function to unite people and not to divide people”
Has such a thing ever happen in any context with several religions.

It is good to see that both get together to combined assessment of others because they are the only clever two out of all others. Their wise clever knowledge was used finally to bring bankruptcy. It is a great achievement of two self claimed intelligent, experienced heroes.

Since there has been much pre-election talk about recovery of “stolen assets” and figures up to trillions of $ being bandied about, I thought readers would be interested that the OECD has set up a mechanism for automatic exchange of information about individuals holding immovable properties abroad. Let’s see if our government accedes to this, so that we can finally see how much money is in Uganda, and whose it is.

“Sri Lanka is facing one of the most unprecedented disasters in its history……(and we shouldn’t talk about government bumbling because it is honest) ” is the message Professor Ass is trying to give us.
As for honesty, why did the NPP nominate as Speaker an individual with fake qualifications? To make matters worse, this individual tried to escape responsility for a drunken traffic accident yesterday by entering hospital in a wheelchair. Was he so drunk that he couldn’t walk?
The Opposition is only doing what the JVP did when it was in opposition. The last disaster we had was the bankruptcy. Didn’t AKD promise to revise the IMF agreement?
Didn’t AKD promise to “solve all major issues” in 6 months? Yesterday, Lalkantha was musing about ending the Tea industry. Remember the JVP’s Five Lessons?

You bring to mind the question for a guy (demented person) who is also suffering from blood hunger, as was the case with 89-92-JVP canibels.
Habaraduwa was one of the hotspots where an unknown number of undergraduates and teenagers were cruelly slain, with some of their meat and bones being fed to their own relatives and parents.
Do you believe Douglas or other AKDisized males will ever understand this?
Douglas and others have been completely indoctrinated, as have those who envisioned a law-bound society once Thabuththegama-pachaya is chosen as the head of state. Ask him why they were unable to take a breath test with RANWALA, who injured three people, including a baby, while driving intoxicated.
As of today, all of these dreams have been dashed, just like the catastrophic floods that devastated the country at the end of last month. This is why I was obliged to conclude that these men should be fed THANAKOLA around the clock in order to educate the facts from the fainting fairytales.

They simply forget everything for a thirsty trip. Almost every second, it becomes evident that Jeppos are nothing more than fools and WEDABARI tarzons, and their advocates, such as DOUGLAS, go to any length to save their bums in and out of the CT-forum, which is the reality of their daily agenda today…. aiyoooooooo.. what a hell, motherland turned to be … ????.

However, he eventually broke away and collaborated with Mr RW during the 26th month of the interior government. Unfortunately, amid today’s dilemma, the foreign minister’s position is not yet apparent. Either he is hiding in Pelwatta or he lacks the courage to convene an international gathering to rebuke the country following the flood and, more importantly, to collect a large sum of money for reconstruction. Experts put the damage at more than $8 billion USD.

Integrity, my foot! You say, “Sri Lanka may be small in size, but under President AKD, it stands large in integrity, resilience, and global respect.” Absolutely not! This is the evidence.
1. Even before Cyclone Ditwah, the JVP/NPP government’s integrity was in question. Your President AKD and his government were labelled as “Pacha Government” by the locals which means a government that rules on lies, deception and disinformation.
2. Your President AKD criminalized criticism. He blatantly used and still uses the “Emergency Law” which was in effect since November 29, 2025 to suppress criticism against his lack of preparedness for Cyclone Ditwah and data related to the high death toll and massive destruction all over the country. AKD, being a leader of a political party that criticized “Emergency Laws” declared by his predecessors and also crippled the public service for decades by staging workers’ strikes and university protests against previous governments, seems to have a lack of tolerance for criticism when he is in power.
3. Around 50 people have been arrested for “criticizing the President” in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. You should tell your President to remove the “Emergency Law” and face the truth like a real leader.

NV,
Experts and professionals feel that the way a leader of a country affected by a natural disaster or conflict responds might serve as a litmus test for a leader’s intelligence.
According to latest sources, even though the flood disaster affected millions of people two weeks ago, the current government has not yet held disaster management meetings, nor has its foreign minister been seen in public calling an international donor conference or similar meetings that should have been called immediately.
Nor do they appear to have influential people to assist them since they pose as though they had “know-all” qualities, despite the fact that they are clearly unable of handling even traffic accidents caused by their party men.

No arguments would be required from July 2022 to September 2024; Mr RW’s ability to control the economic crisis despite a lack of opposition backing should be commended by anybody with knowledge of global politics.

4. In the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, your President AKD promised to launch a multi-pronged action plan to address future flood control including implementing nature-based solutions.
i. Did he set a good example by abandoning his government’s decision to construct a new 8-kilometer road between Thangappuwa and Corbett’s Gap in the legally protected Knuckles Conservation Forest which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
ii. Was he even aware that the Knuckles Forest Range is highly susceptible to landslides and that its natural forest cover protects slopes as a buffer?
iii. Isn’t he aware that it is illegal to carry out any construction within the 100 meter radius around any Environmentally Protected Forests?
iv. Ironically, the proposed new road through the Knuckles Forest Range is to reach a small village called Meemure with a population around 400 people, which is in a region highly prone to landslides and flashfloods!!!!
v. Please tell your President to consult his government’s Minister-for-What and “environmental campaigner Samantha Vidyaratne” before razing down hundreds of thousands of trees in the Knuckles Forest Range to illegally construct a road. Please see the following link to read Samantha’s speech in 2021.

5.. According to the Secretary/Finance, as of December 10, Sri Lanka had received Rs. 1.8 billion in flood donations. As I said in my very first comment on Cyclone Ditwah, (under my original login name “Champa”, of course) this government has sufficient funds to START helping flood victims.
6.. In the 2026 Budget, the government has allocated Rs.12.5 BILLION for vehicles and machinery and an “unspecified amount” to import 1,775 double cabs for federal and local politicians for which the total cost will be over Rs. 60 BILLION!!!. If the Treasury transfers that amount to the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund”, the government now has approximately 61.8 BILLION of Rupees in hand. Even today, while flood victims are suffering in temporary shelters, the Cabinet has approved importing motorcycles, buses and trucks!!! Is the government’s “motor-vehicle mania” greater than the relief for Cyclone Ditwah victims?
7.. Your President AKD messed up disaster management by irrationally shifting core missions of government Ministries. For example, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau which was under the Ministry of Environment was transferred to a new Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurial Development.

8. New information is emerging that it is your President AKD’s public sector cronyism and parachute appointments that led to the government’s mishandling of Cyclone Ditwah causing a massive death toll. Your President AKD’s attempt to appoint an unqualified friend, colleague or an associate as the “Auditor General” is a prime example of his cronyism.
9. Two weeks passed after Cyclone Ditwah and still there is no formal government analysis or assessment on the fatalities and damages it caused to private and public properties, business establishments and infrastructure. What is your President AKD and his government waiting for?
10. Is your President aware that approximately 11 million people, out of the total population of 22 million, have been affected by Cyclone Ditwah?
11. How long will it take the government to start distributing compensation to flood victims?
12. The government’s first task should be paying compensation to the families with children and those who lost their daily livelihood. However, there is disturbing news that the government is planning to bypass the village level officials (Grama Niladhari) and entrust some politically affiliated committees to determine the beneficiaries of flood assistance, raising serious suspicions of fraudulence in another disaster relief fund.

They don’t seem like sensible thinkers to me. Although no Buddhist literature advocates such PINKAMA ceremonies, lankens have created them for entertaining purposes.

Do we deserve such a long diatribe from you to confirm something that has been pretty much obvious to us?
The man is obsessed with a stupid idea and will not let go,

“The man is obsessed with a stupid idea and will not let go,”

Isn’t it what individuals who lived under Idiamin’s tyranny in Uganda experienced decades ago?

He was driving Indians out of the nation just because he believed it was right. At the very least, he acted aggressively, although lying is the norm under AKD leadership and his completely inexperienced cabinet members.

I am fully against moves by both the govt and the onpppposition trying
to cash in the catastrophe the nature unleashed in such magnitude .
International help arrived not due to AKD govt’s integrity and
unprecedented trust as this writer trying to cough out for NPP , the
world has developed deeper trade , employment and other social
and cultural connections with our country with the Open market
economy introduced by JRJ that was wehemently opposed and
attacked by the same JVP that is in mask today as NPP. You can say if
you want to that the aid is being distributed in all fairness But , a Big
But , Never try to Twist the history .

Whywhy,
“International help arrived not due to AKD govt’s integrity and unprecedented trust as this writer trying to cough out for NPP “
The very first assistance came from the Indian ships in the Colombo port. Now, who invited them even before the cyclone hit? Surely you must credit AKD for that foresight? He knew about the cyclone even before the BBC………..
😅😅

OC, the total amount of international assistance received thus far is estimated to be roughly $20 million USD (0.25%) . However, they predict that more than 7-8 billion USD (7000-8000) will be required to reconstruct the country. Experts criticize that the longer they delay calling a donor conference, the more difficult it will be for individuals to recover from the calamity.I don’t think people like Douglas, who are completely dominated by the SADU-SADU effect, will ever perceive it correctly. What a nation?😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

Don’t be so unkind to the guy ! He didn’t surely know this

be a budget support . Don’t you think ? Please don’t you
ask me if the budget was a catastrophe !

“Never try to Twist the history”
You should know that the dominant history is as written by the winner– with a lot of twist.
/
whywhy / December 15, 2025
Too many on this forum I reckon , do read that the
existence of Jesus is questioned today , not by
Atheists , but by believers themselves . Just because
winners twist history , Truth is not buried . Twister ,
distorter , fabricator will be named and shamed .

Commenter Champa is an extreme Sinhala Buddhist, whereas DTG, who appears to have been carried away by recent floods, is a radical Christian who follows the Bible. However, Champa is relatively realistic about the present government, which was formed through a “spread of huge lies and exaggerations” and took advantage of the hatred that arose against abusive Rajapakshe-family politics. Poor RW and UNPrs had to blame Rajapkashes for the disaster he had caused, and they were surrounded for no apparent reason. The fact is that the UNP is the only party that claimed significantly more human casualties and depleted its leadership during the three-decade-long cruel conflict and conficts produced by southern and northern rebels (both of which are true terrorists).

The writer here is very conveniently disrespectful to Ranwala , the
Darling of NPP , why forget him ? . Who is he to AKD , Harini and Tylvin ?
Well , you have four more years , you are a government and the next
time we meet , a competition for The Best Liar Company !

WW,
Prof. Ass, as the name implies, was born to be devoted to the NPP. If they share Sri Lankan DNA, this is typical among many. No matter the facts.
To tell you the truth, some Germans and other Europeans are asking me why the government ignored prewarnings. I get really humiliated; how can I tell them that our LEADERSHIP is inexperienced?
–
We should show him greater respect because he is beyond 80. At his age, he could have imagined that the NPP would herald in a period in which he would be quite pleased. Unfortunately, the Premier and the President AKD are not performing well as leaders.
Our comparison is with former presidents and premiers; compared to them, the present batch is unfit to head a regional government. Harini A acts as if she was born after the election is won. Not a single minister in the present government is believed to be adept at their jobs.

L M ,
This man AKD is quite experienced in finding faults with
the system that was already in place . He used his Marxist
knowledge to do that with the prevailing system but then
cheated on applying it to solve problems because deepdown
he knew the consequences . People on the other hand , can
not blame him for that because he never promised anything
socialism to the public . So now , both the public and the
rulers are being roasted . More turmoil , more for the outsider .
