The Pinguttara Of Our Politics

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“Ranil Wickremesinghe, the UNF and civil society leaders, came together to put him aloft on a rising surf. An inbuilt, illfated pinguttara misfortune tossed him out of it.”

Tale of Pinguttara

There is an interesting piece in the LankaEnews today ( 13/12) that refers to President Mairtipala Sirisena as a ‘pinguttara.’ ‘Pinguttara,’ is a term that is ascribed to somebody unlucky and unable to enjoy even a goodluck that comes his way. Those of you who know the Ummnaga Jatakaaya will remember the story about how a Taxila Guru in Mithila, India, gave his beautiful daughter in marriage to his best pupil.  However, the lad was intensely unhappy and spurned  her at every turn. On the way to Mithilā, when his wife climbed up a fig tree in order to assuage her hunger, the newly wed lad put thorns round the tree and left her there-deserting the scene. King Videha of Mithilā saw this unfortunate incident and rescued the young woman, naming her Udumbarā. Some time later, Udumbara saw Pinguttara doing a menial job, mending a road. The lad looked helplessly at her and smiled at her good fortune.

This is the fate of pinguttaras: they do not realize and seize their own opportunities but are ready to associate with the fortunes of others. A similar comparison is found in Gutilla Kavya where the following verse is penned considering the misfortune that befell Devadatta who had been Buddha’s follower but who betrayed the Buddha. Something like Judas in the story of Christ:

 ඉඳ ඉඳ එක වෙහෙර

විඳ විඳ දහම් මනහර

සිඳ බිඳ දුක් සසර

අනේ දේව්දට් නොදුටු මොක් පුර

(Staying in the same abode [as the Noble One]

Listening to his alluring sermons

Unshakling samsarik dukka

Oh! How Devdat ne’er reached Moksha !)

The U-turn Act

Gamaralalage Maitripala Sirisena stole his way out of the house of Mahinda. Entered the abode of Ranil and his party. Had he stayed put with the UNF, he could have gone down to history as partnering the yahapalanaya movement designed to rescue the island from an appalling regime characterised by a singular disregard for the law, by public theft and by brutal murder. That was the promised revolution for which 6.25 million people voted him as President. After a mere 3 years, however, Sirisena felt like breaking away form his new abode of light, spurning Ranil Wickremesinghe, his Prime Minister, for no expressed reason, and showing total disregard for the islandwide UNPers that rallied round to vote for him and for good governance.

And alas! where does he go? Backward to Mahinda and the UPFA crew that had spat at him during election days. Mahinda Rajapksa, SB Dissanayake, Wimal Weerawansa, Susil Premjayanth  and others of that ilk did the spitting, ejecting venomous saliva. Videos are going all over social media showing that.  Sirisena’s own attacks on Mahinda are also circulating.

Mahinda’s Motive

It has always been clear to any but the undiscerning that Mahinda’s efforts, now doubled and trebled, is to save his family and others from court convictions that are impending.  Mahinda’s men offer no new program before  the people if they come to power. Nor have they apologised for their past disgraceful misdemeanours in public life. In short, President Sirisena has allied with the corrupt and the lawless; with those facing serious grave court action.  This is the diametrical opposite position to his yahapalanaya election oath. Like a pinguttara, Maitripala Sirisena  has, for no earthly or rational reason, done a 360 U-turn. It is just the fated misfortune of pinguttaras, which probably his astrological chart may reveal. Like the lad at Mithila, President Sirisena just had to do it. Like a character in Greek drama he began inexorably heading the way to the unfortunate point that he now stands on. The whole island is discarding him. World leaders are scorning him. When such an outcome comes out of one’s own act of volition and against all odds, that is simply being pinguttara.

Supreme Court Verdict

The Supreme Court verdict today delivered a historic verdict  that would have the effect of casting President Sirisena and his provocateur, Mahinda Rajapakse, into the politcal dustbin. To Mahinda, himself, it would be hard to get over the shame although dancing in the nude is not something these two haven’t done.

Our pinguttara man is confronting a dark era of personal shame. This has happened from the position of a phase in his life where he could have taken his fortune on the tide. Ranil Wickremesinghe, the UNF and civil society leaders came together to put him aloft on a rising surf. An inbuilt, illfated pinguttara misfortune tossed him out of it.

Comparison

What a crowd of politicos constitute Sirisena’s company now!  Readers know their profiles and don’t need reminders from me. In comparison, what a flank of leaders he faced for three years in the UNF: Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sajith Premadasa, Dr Harsha de Silva, Eran Wickramaratne, Jayampathi Wickremaratne, Mangala Samaraweera, Ravi Karunanayake, Thalatha Athukorale, Ajith P Perera- just to randomly name a few. These individuals are’rnt perfect models, to be sure. On the other hand, they are educated and mature, learned persons of good background who don’t carry any baggage of criminal charges on their heads. The Joint Opposition tried to demonise Ranil Wickremesinghe -a basically decent, learned and cultured persona- associating the latter with the so-called bond scam. The truth, however, is that the Commission investigating the incident did not find Ranil or any UNP Minister of bad dealing. The Ravi Karunanayake issue did not relate directly to the bond deal but to something else. This Bond incident is all that the JO can shout about overlooking their chronic record of serial misdemeanour. Besides, the money stated as “loss,” is not lost as it is frozen in bank accounts. This case hasn’t yet gone to court and it is only the court that can legally  apportion guilt. A  forensic financial investigation  will have to be completed  and, in terms of that, it is not necessary that the same conclusion that may be given.

Bizarre

Getting into a position of making one disastrous judgment after another in violation of the constitution and driving one’s country into anarchy and its people into despair, can, perhaps, be seen as symptomatic of President Maitripala’s plight. It had been so bizarre that someone has filed action to have the President checked for insanity. How well does that situation sit on Maitripala Sirisena’s conscience? The lad of Mithila faced such a turn in his  life  when he opted out of a life with beautiful lass and found comfort in being a highway labourer. The wife, later, married into the royal family and the lad of Mithula seemed to look in admiration at her opposite fortune.

The unfortunate possible end would be worse for Maitripala since the gang of political humbugs, cheats and knaves that contrived to get the President to turn his mind are going to abandon him. He will probably still have a leader of Ranil’s extraordinary calibre to shelve him  and clothe him with a modicum of decency.

Forgive

That is my own hope for President Maitripala Sirisena and it is a hope based on gratitude for his immeasurable role in ousting the old regime and ushering in a regime that is on the job of yahapalanaya. Buddhism teaches us all to extend our arms and hearts of  compassionate to all living beings. If one learns to think of the good deeds of men, then Maitripala Sirisena deserves that.

    Pinguththaraya!

People won’t accept such low description on the president.

If MS is pinguththaraya RW is also equally a pinguththaraya. & people like Shyamon Jayainghe are double pinguththarayas’

Probably MS hasn’t been perfect but there were reasons for him to act like that.

    Has RW ever been perfect?

Not only his way of coming to power but also ways of RW’s & UNPs coming to power are abnormal.

Had MS not been made common candidate, RW & the UNP wouldn’t have been in power.

Both MS & RW should resign without conditions & face elections.

People have had enough of both of you.

“Devadatta who had been Buddha’s follower but who betrayed the Buddha. “

Thanks for the write up The Pinguttara, Sirisena, has earned many Titles, on the way: Traitor, Quisling, Sevalaya, Mala-Perethaya, Patholaya, Pachaya, Pissa etc.

Sri Lanka can certainly do without this Pinguttara, Sirisena, and Pissa, the late Dr N M Perera presciently predicted in 1978 during the debate on the executive presidential constitution that became a reality in 2018.

The land needs to put this Pinguttara, Sirisena, and Pissa, aside, and move on Why should 21 million innocent souls pay a price for this Pinguttara, Sirisena, and Pissa?

      Fake Revolutionist,

“People have had enough of both of you.”
The ‘Medamookalana’ midnight hour revolutionist. It’s been proven more than 7 times within a six week period who the two most cunning, spineless, unpopular and ignorant people are. Are you referring to MS/MR combination?

      RR,
“People won’t accept such low description on the president.”
You are welcome to have your crush on this worst President in our history. And the worst Fake P.M. too.
But ,Decency, gratitude, sportsmanship are qualities which are inculcated in a person by education. Gamaralas from Polonnaruwa may have admirable qualities such as knowing the time to reap the paddy or milk the buffalo. But their ideas of administration depend much on Madu Waligayas and blunt swords, which is the sort of education they get in their paddy fields.
There is much wrong with the sort of education provided by Royal / S. Thomas’ / St Joseph’s etc , but their products are head and shoulders above the rest. Just ask Mahinda why his sons are Thomians if you want proof! Not that they have gained anything. Heredity counts, you know.

        You are in a hurry.
Hang on until Dayan completes the purchase of corroded Naval ship which our Navy doesn’t want and it is priced at $150 Million.
Don’t you think as a smart patriotic politician Hopper Sirisena has to have the deal?

        OC,

“Gamaralas from Polonnaruwa may have admirable qualities such as knowing the time to reap the paddy or milk the buffalo. But their ideas of administration depend much on Madu Waligayas and blunt swords, which is the sort of education they get in their paddy fields.”

In my childhood, during the paddy cultivation/harvesting times, I was encouraged (compelled at first :)) ) by my father to go and work with the farmers in the fields at least for a few days. There is much real-world wisdom I’ve gained from them ( I’m one of those rare of the rarest Lankans who can walk equally comfortably with the commonest of the common man and the “highly” erudite “academics” – like Dayan! :)) Now, how’s that for a brag? ) I don’t think Sirisena ever was a real farmer.

People uses whatever means possible to escape the conditions they are born into. Sirisena has used his cunning and taken up politics to escape his circumstances ……… but one’s cunning without knowledge/wisdom/smarts can only take one so far. Sirisena’s cunning has exceeded that point and his limitations are now exposed.

“There is much wrong with the sort of education provided by Royal / S. Thomas’ / St Joseph’s etc , but their products are head and shoulders above the rest. Just ask Mahinda why his sons are Thomians if you want proof!”

At every opportunity this should be exposed and people’s noses dragged in it. Everyone knows which side their bread is buttered ……… what education one’s offspring should receive if one has the means. This hypocrisy should be destroyed with nuclear-weapons; that’s one useful way of utilizing massive destructive force. They say, everything has its use. I wonder how Native Vadda will reconcile that with his pacifism? :))

“I wonder how Native Vadda will reconcile that with his pacifism?”

Well, threat of violence and mass destruction should not scare anyone into capitulation nor running away from such situation should not be considered as cowardice. However it can be considered as “live to fight another day”, in other words it is only self preservation.

“Never argue with violent people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with their rage.”

        continued

For the greater good of the country the other false-illusion that should be destroyed is “the myth of Mahinda.” Why would a 73-year old man walk around like a painted geisha? All that crap of the red-shawl, massive cut-outs ……. and the insane constant propaganda that he can do anything – even bring down the Dollar! – should be exposed for what it really is. Adolf/Benito mass-hysteria ……… whipping-up people’s foolishness/ignorance into a frenzy.

In my collage days I shared a house with some other students. One day in the height of winter I was walking out of the house and another boy was walking up the stairs with a knockout blonde girl; I couldn’t keep my eyes off her. Later when I returned two barefooted men were jostling outside in the snow. Later we discovered that the knockout blonde happened to be a man!

I feel there is something similar in painted-up Mahinda walking around ……… when Lankans come to their senses ……… the next painted up geisha will be waiting in line to take them on their next ride ……… What would the world be without illusions and make-believe?

        Ah! life’s a strange thang!

          Nimal F,
It is one of my life principles NOT to trust anyone who dyes his hair. Why would an honest man want to look younger than he is ?
What happened to that pic of Dorian Gray will eventually happen to MR. But then, he wouldn’t have read that story.

As a bona-fide citizen it’s reasonable for anybody to have a crush for any president as it’s a reflection of loyalty to the state.

Believe me, I didn’t vote for this person, taking into the consideration of his being unsophisticated but after people making him the president I give my due respect to the head of the state though I may criticize/ attack weak points as democracy provides me for that.

The question I raise is who wanted MS to be the common candidate?

It’s your much worshipped Royal/St. Thomas/ etc. products.

In politics you can’t discriminate people, whether rich/poor, educated/uneducated, rural/urban, men/women, young/old etc. all enjoy the same right.

You may have heredity in your mind but it doesn’t have a place in the constitution.

You blame MS for non-adherence to the constitution but where’s your adherence?

          RR,
“Believe me, I didn’t vote for this person, taking into the consideration of his being unsophisticated “
Believe me, I DID vote for this idiot. That’s why I don’t respect him now, having been taken for a ride.
“I give my due respect to the head of the state though I may criticize” I think you have found your “due respect ” only after he hooked up with Mahinda.
Yours is a very feudal view. The head of state is YOUR servant, not the other way around. Anybody is free to criticize him even on his personal habits.
“It’s your much worshipped Royal/St. Thomas/ etc. products.
In politics you can’t discriminate people, “
I am not worshiping anybody. It is plain fact that these places give better education than any place in Polonnaruwa. What the students do with it is another matter.

      Of course Real Revolustionist.

you guys would not. but over 50% would do.

Go back to our history since independence, we dont have any presidents that fell to the level of Ballige putha SIRISENA. Earlier I used to use the wording to attack RAJAKAHSE only, but today, I think KING ballige putha is no doubt Sirisena.

Just few days, SIRISENA the laughing stock of the nation, had the audcity to express that PM RW should be made accoutnable for all the delays of court investigations of dozens of high profile cases already filed against ballige putha Rajakshe and his bunch of thugs (Jonsten, Mahindanananda, and all other mirikudu cultured men in that vicioius and most rascal group).
But there ballige putha SIRISENA stayed as if he was fed with KIRIMATI – he the most abusive low life could timely react at the time, all these were suppposed to be burried, there he could well apply his executive powers since we all 6.2 millions appointed him for that purpose mainly.

It’s not Sirisena, the ballige putha

It’s those who made him CC & voted him, including you, are ballahs.

(not sons of the bitches please because I can’t blame those innocent mothers.)

    Dear Mr Jayasinghe,

Thanks very much for your painful words. BUt I dont think he is pinguththaaraya. Anyways, he proved himself that his knowledge on the constitutions and the amendements are far below those of an Ordinary level school going children. THe reason why I ve been adding so is connected with some questions being raised in some exam papers of them, there the marking scheme clearly mentioned, according to 19th Amendment to the 78 constitution, president has powers to dissolve parliament only after 4.5 years.

In the same time, entire world became clearer that 22-mio island nation albeit 92% literate by numbers, should have elected the most stupidiest person as their president.

I think it is better us to commit suicide today knowing the bitter truths.

Ballige putha Rajakshe has now making every racial remarks decorating his kind of extremist fair tales to rabblerouse that they would never build up a govt with TNA who accoding to them are at this moment seen as LTTE terrorists, albeit very same Rajakshe bought one MP from TNA to allow their mandate few weeks ago, being in the mind that nothign would have been wrong with that.

Since their doctored documents being produced by Laxaman Yapa Aberwardhana, defacto MINISTER of their newly elected JUNTA regime, they add them to the press as if Honorouable Ranil W to have made agreements with TNA. TNA has been disagreeing with them though.

All in all, Rajapakshe led sinhala extremist seem to spread any lie in order them to grab power.
No matter any of their docs have been made just to fulfil the purpose. These are illegal acts in accordance with prevailing laws.

Simply to describe Sirisena’s plight is nothing but his selfish greed for power and it’s perks got the best of him. That’s the reason that made him to do all these terrible things for himself and the country. Now, he got eggs on all over his face, that sent him and his new found buddy MR into the gutters. At least now, some sense should prevail in him and sinks into him, and he should act accordingly before he slips further into shity mess. Only ways is for him to swallow his pride, and restore the status quo, and regain some self respect which is by the minutes becoming very rare commodity for him.

It’s very much clear that m&s has been used by Mahinda.all this coup went out of hands and misfired on him.
    Now; stupidity become more clear.
    He made political suicides.
    His anger is dangerous
His temper put him down ..
Now; he lost his repscts .
    Poor man
    Ayyo Sirirsaena.
What a miss of fortunate ..

    Dear Shyamon,
Thank you for this factual article. You have very clearly pointed out about the true nature of the Bond scam. It is simply the former Central Bank governor giving information to his family relative about the share prices and a great loss to the country. There was an investigation and the company involved in the Bond scam is a Srilankan company and the owners of the company are arrested and all their assets are freezed. The whole world and all of us know well how many billions worth of money was robbed Mahinda family alone during their time and it is sad that so far none of them brought under justice. Ranil should understand that a soft hand on the political criminals is dangerous to the country and democracy and for him.
Even now after the end of war, for an ordinary rulal Sinhalese person, he only hear and see only about Bond scam and LTTE. These Sinhalese believe that Mahinda Family fought LTTE and won the war. They don’t now the truth and Ranil did not take any initiative to tell the truth to those ordinary village people. This is what needed. These people should know the truth. Unless these people understand about these truth, Mahinda will be a threat to this country.

MS is nothing but a self serving, hypocrite, pseudo patriotic , average Lankan political con artist who has now out of greed and lust for power turned criminal, uncivilized and a dangerous person .A crooked politician now run amok just like the previous ones, who want to stay in power at any cost. We are not discussing about Nelson Mandela here. To People who say we need to have unconstitutional elections right now because of so called “bond scam”, I will like to remind in that case we should have had elections every month or so during MR regime. There was hundreds of scams taking place on daily basis ,not alone involving Rajapaksa family, but all the rest of the criminals (like Duminda, Johnston) they brought in who were involved in scams, rapes, murders, kidnappings —–etc —–etc.

Pinguttara managed to get rid of ‘Wadaka Bhari’ by putting thorns round the tree. It looks like President might not be able to get rid of ‘Batalanda Wadhakaya’ who has become a ‘Wadhaka Bhari’ for him. President Sirisena, it is your fault that you did not go to a good astrologer and check ‘Porondam’. What has happened during the three and half year old marriage shows ‘Porondam’ do not match.

Jayasinghe , like all the other Colombo lumpens you don’t know what you are talking about.

You contributed nothing to develop Australia. You lived most your life in Sri Lanka and went to Australia to benefit from their riches and enjoy having a Australian Passport.May be getting a dole too thanks to Australian tax payer.

    Who is a pingutharaya ?

This judgement is nothing. Like the Working committee of the UNP which is handpicked by Ranil, the 19 amendment is also a creation of a UNP ( Jayampathy) MP and Ranil. True, the PA guys voted for it. That is because like you now shouting hoarse they also did not get the true picture three years ago. They should have realized nothing good will come from ranil ever.

The true picture is that the vast majority of the people will vote against Ranil. Wait for the election. That is true politic and true democracy.

Even if Ranil becomes PM via the Supreme court again for one year, do you think a man who has been an absolute failure for 40 years can do anything in one year ? The public service as well as the private sector do not want him.

But our supreme court has put the country in a big mess.

Please Shyamon Jayasinghe, do not forget that seventy years ago we were the luckiest in Asia. Our standard of living was the dream of the rest in Asia. Our schools were second to none. Law and Order was copied by others. We had the best flora and fauna. In short we had a Utopia.
We did have certain social backwardness but so did the rest of the world.
    .
Enter the political Pinguttararas preaching Democracy. They started accumulating wealth but they were getting more and more unhappy and selfish. Occasionally Goodluck strayed, but was quickly snatched.
    .
The lay-people were forced to be pinguttaras (No capital P). This is a human-creation. The silver-lining is the realisation that it is possible to break the bondage.

Mahinda will boot out Sira if Sira is back to square one. He is a selfish fellow to whom Sira is a condom. Both these chaps have shown their incompetence in handling this whole affair. Eva Wanasundera is the last straw for Mahinda. Let’s see. Do not know why the CJ couldn’t remove this woman. Mara gifted her son a Mercedes for the latter’s wedding
